WARSCARS "Killing Rate: Complete" Mcd

(Bones Brigade)
Release date:
2003

Review:
This is a side-project by members of french band Gronibard, apparently an attempt at more serious grindcore... There is still some Gronibard stylings into Warscars, some of the screamy vocals are similar, as well as some catchy thrashing grind riffs... This is really solid stuff, very fast, pretty catchy and aggressive, but this is not pure grindcore according to me, the sound production is so damn crystal-clear and heavy as hell, this type of polished sound production inevitably make things sound a lot more metal and takes away essential raw grind energy, but this is only my personal taste. Songs seem to be about... war or something, I'm not sure, it doesn't sound like something extremely political, but they use the crust-core type "shocking war picture" type of imagery. Anyway, this is an excellent outing, if you like french grindcore/metal bands like Blockheads or Inhumate, I'm pretty sure you're gonna dig this as well... Top-notch sound production, strong song writing and execution, this Warscars band is definitely something worth checking out!

WARSORE "Re-Opened Wound" Cd

(Vomit Noise Productions - VNP002)
Release date: 2003
Running time: 43:14

Review:
This is a cd collection of early material by this pretty famous australian grindcore outfit, containing their "Open Wound" demo, rehearsal tapes and some live recordings; the sound can be pretty rough on some of the tracks but the band always gives a tight, intense performance. Warsore was into very fast, very violent, blasting grindcore with some crust/noise elements too. Very much like early Napalm Death, Agathocles, Fear of God, Unholy Grave... and with an additional touch of brutal crust and some genuine rawness to it. All the songs are bulging with energy, aggression, speed and distortion. Scorching growls, abrasive shrieks, blistering guitars, very prominent bass and some of the most amazing, insanely fast, grinding drumming... All the songs are real short, mostly around 30 seconds and rarely over 1 minute... just pure, undiluted grindcore. The tracks from the "Open Wound" demo are the ones with the better sound quality (still... demo tape quality), raw but heavy, the rest sounds alot cruder, but the band always remains intense and quite fascinating to listen to!

WRECKER "Humanicon" Cd

  Release date: 2001
Running time: 19:20

Review: Here's pretty good grinding death metal from France. Drums are programmed and some of the stuff have a somewhat Drogheda-like sound. Vocals are a mix of growls and piercing screams. Growls are very much like the vocals of Mr. Barney Greenwalt (Napalm Death). Songs are at times pretty grindy and hysterical, truly kick-ass, but a few times metal melodic riffs come in the way and I'm not sure I'm really into that stuff. Brutality is the major theme though and songs are always really fast, intense, blasting and basic. In the end, it's strongly reminscent of what Drogheda does, if you like them with a bit of Napalm Death, I think you'll dig what Wrecker does. One thing I didn't like very much is the last synthetiser song, I'm really not into that stuff, it's quite lame. But well the other 7 songs are really neat, powerful, catchy death-grind tunes.

Tracks: 1)Subhuman 2)Non human 3)Anti human 4)Suicide of a serial killer 5)Me 6)Alternative 7)Wrecker 8)Humanicon

WTN "Rotting in Pestilence"

(Razorback Records)
Release date:
2004

Review:
This singaporean band is relatively unknown to the scene, but they have been putting out split vinyl releases for a few years now, most notably with Squash Bowels, Morgue & Ulcerrhoea, all of which... I unfortunately haven't heard personally... Still, "Rotting in Pestilence" is already announced as their one and only album, ever... If that's the real case, then this is assuredly a superb, thrashing, grinding and gore-soaked swansong! The album opens with an instrumental introduction in the tradition of "Genital Grinder" (Carcass) & "Ominous Lamentation" (General Surgery)... Then musical slaughter ensues... If I had to compare WTN to another modern grind band, I'd say Machetazo because of their similarly gritty sound, heavy and raw at the same time. WTN definitely have their own distinctive style though of course; this is grind-gore delivered in a basic, effective way, but still with some real personality, edge and complexity to it; Most of the songs are purely infectious, churning grind with speed, gore-gurgling vocals, thrashing guitars, crushing drumming & blistering bass sound as main key elements; however WTN clearly tried to give their songs more layers and cooked up some very neat song arrangements too, often eerily/morbidly melodic... "Symphonies of Sickness" by Carcass often springs to mind in that respect... the album also retains the sheer simplicity and coolness of something like Impetigo's "Horror of the Zombies" too, especially for the directness of it all and the blend of horror movie samples and atmosphere with the music. Oh, and let this be the last reference, on many occasions, WTN's musical impact and stomach-turning abilities also reminded me of Haemorrhage on "Emetic Cult". More regarding the vocals: they are mostly very pronounced grunt-roar/growls underlined by fewer squeaky shrieks and hardly any vocal effects (at all?), lower, guttural, Bill Steer/Stevo(Horror of the Zombie) style vocals are my personal favorites so I think the vocal choice was very wise (an example to follow really). One of the many highpoints of this album is the cover version of Impetigo's hommage to Nekromantik "I Work for the Street Cleaner", a very entertaining rendition of one of the most accomplished Impetigo songs, and Impetigo guitarist Mark even plays guitar for it! This is packaged in gorgeous horror comic-book style artwork by Nor (Machetazo's "Trono de Huesos") and the booklet contains the lyrics too. This is not a perfect album but still some impressive and clearly passionate composition work that will surely fascinate many a grind-gore freak. My favorite songs are probably the great opening "Rotting in Pestilence" and the fantastic closing song "Into the light with blood", some really striking and memorable riffs in there. Simply unmissable!

Tracks: 1)Rotting in pestilence 2)Coroners macabre fleshfeast 3)Flesh ripping torment 4)Behind closed doors 5)Toetags and bodybags 6)Posthumous revulsions 7)House of necrophilia 8)Embryonic chronic mutations 9)Village of the damned 10)Eye for pathology 11)Excav-eaters in the graves 12)Laughter from the morgue 13)I work for the streetcleaner (Impetigo cover w/Mark on guitar!) 14)Into the light with blood
