NYCTOPHOBIC INTERVIEW
(september 10 1998)
Goregrind and Grindcore interview #8 with Tom from Nyctophobic(Germany)
Questions were asked by myself(Pierre) through email

Hi; How was summer? Did you play lots of gigs with Nyctophobic(this summer)? & is there still some upcoming Nycto. shows for soon or later on?
No we just played two Open Air festivals. We played on "Fuck The Commerce" in May with great bands as CANNIBAL CORPSE, KRABATHOR, AGATHOCLES or MORTICIAN just too mention a few. The other festival was called "Eternal Hate" and took place in the Czech Republic. So far we haven't planned any other gigs for this year because we want to concentrate on our new stuff.

What is the current line up? Did it often change from the beginning?
Yeah, you're right we had many line-up changes. We really had some stupid arsewholes in the band who left sooner than they joined the band. Luckily. The actual line-up is (no change since the CD): Zimbo - Vocals, Markus Bugert - Guitar, Martin Hub - Guitar, Markus Zorn - Bass and me, Tom Will playing the drums. I think this is the best and most creative line-up we ever had because it's based on friendship and understanding.

What releases are coming up soon or just had recently came out? How will be the next full length album?(when will it be released? Still on Morbid records?)
The next release will be a Split Ep with California based band EXHUMED. This Ep should have been out already but EXHUMED had some trouble with the artwork and layout. This time we're very happy with the sound. To me
this Ep will be the most intense and aggressive release of us. After that (or may be before???) a small Czech label will release a Split livetape with GARBAGE DISPOSAL. Our side was recorded at the above mentionend Festival in the Czech Republic.
I think the new album will be released thru MORBID RECORDS because we signed a deal for 2 CD's and we are very happy with MORBID. They have done a great job for us. We plan to record the new stuff in May or June 1998 so that it will be released by end of summer next year.

Do you think playing pure grindcore? Are Nycto. new songs different from those from the past? Your musical style did evolve or not really?
I don't know whether we play pure Grindcore or not. I think we have some Grindcore influences but also many other influences. Do you think we play pure Grindcore? I would call our music Political Incorrect-Crust-Grind-Hyper-Blast. Nice, eh? HAHAHA. I think that we changed our music a little bit thru the years but we tried to keep our style and not to wimp out like many bands before.

What is the very first Nyctophobic release?
The first release was the "Negligenced Respect" Ep that came out in 1993 on MMI Records. We're not content with it anymore. We hate the sound, the line-up (just Markus Z. and me left) and the songs. To say it in other words: We think this Ep is bullshit!

You're often described as a political grindcore band… do you really think that Nycto. lyrics contain political ideas? What do you think of voting?
I don't think that we're a political band and we DO NOT want to be called that way. We try to say something with our lyrics. The older lyrics were written by Markus Z. and me. We wrote songs about what we think or what we fear, etc.
Voting is an important thing. Shame on me because I didn't go voting on the last elections here in Germany. Don't follow me!

Can you say a few words about "Grind on Europe 2" tour?
The atmosphere was really great and we had a great time with EXHUMED & HEMDALE. Before the tour EXHUMED stayed a few days at my house and so when the tour started it was like going on tour with a very big family. We also had a great relation with HEMDALE. Ask them about what German we taught them. HAHAHA! The gigs were really great except the one in Rotterdam. I almost got into a fight with the (so-called) stage manager which pissed me really off. The gigs and girls in the Czech Republic were amazing. These freaks there are so enthusiastic and friendly. It's very difficult to explain when you haven't experienced it. I hope that we can do a small tour thru the Czech Republic next year. The only bad thing on tour was that all 3 mobile homes got damaged a little bit. That's life - but life on tour is great!

Are you vegetarian & vegan in the band?
Yes, Martin and Markus Bugert are vegetarians. The rest are meat-eaters.

You included very much intros inside "War criminal views" album… They mainly came from TV news and some movies… right? Don't you think that they are too numbrous? Do you think doing the same thing with the next album?    Yep, you're right we took them from ABC News New York and from some movies. We don't think that they're too numerous because our idea was to give the listener a clue what the lyrics deal with. We thought some might be interested then and read our lyrics. I don't think that each song will have a intro. May be a few.

What kind of movies do you like?
I like Gore Movies like Bad Taste, Braindead, etc. and also Science Fiction (ID4 rules).

Are there brand new (and great) bands coming from Germany that you can advise me? (In grind or other styles;)
My absolute favourite band is RESURRECTED. They play extreme Death Metal that reminds me of INCANTATION. They rule! We played with them in the Czech Republic in July. They kick ass live. In case that anybody is interested in them here's the Email address Resu666@aol.com Check 'em out! Their Debut CD is coming soon!!!!!!

Are there some parallel involvements from Nyctophobic members in other bands?
Me and our old guitarrist Chris played on the NAKED WHIPPER 12" EP "Moloch Acid Orgy" (available at my address). Back in 1994 we were looking for a new singer and Dominus A.S. joined NYCTO. He asked us if we could help him out with the recording of that Ep. We agreed. The music reminds me of IMPALED NAZARENE (they rule!!!).

And a last uninspired question: do you write lyrics or music first?
Always music because then Zimbo can creat the lyrics on the song.

Finally, did I missed to ask something important?
Yes, you forget to ask the most hated question "Tell us something about the history of the band?" Luckily you didn't ask! I hate this question because I have answered it so many times.
