Review: Naked City was a John Zorn
side-project; and as you can see; "Torture garden" contains 42 songs! The sound is totally clean, songs are very short (total running time is only about 30 minutes!), vocals are twisted, non-sensical, demented, high pitched, quite screamy; guitars have a fun poprock sound most of the time, but sometimes gets rawer and louder... Also, drums are very well-played, catchy, and can eventually get very fast or crazed! Finally it's the insane alto sax who give to the whole thing a free jazz feeling... This can be labelled as crazy jazz/grind, or non-sensical jazz/hardcore I don't know... They also include many fun parts as well as some metal parts. The whole album is so insane, fresh. I just love it! Something truly unique and original there... a very emotional and violent jazz feel, gripping the heart. Without being lame or melodic! The clever use of the sax & the keyboards helps alot. But it's definitely insane music, really hard stuff, not easy-listening crap at all! Well, it's up to you to try it or not... If you take a look at the song titles, you'll get that Naked City revolves around a S & M concept, lyrically and visually.
