MORTICIAN "Domain of Death"

(Relapse Records)
Release date: April 17 2001
Total running time: 38:00

Review:
Mortician detractors say all their albums sound alike, and... well, they're right. But, personally, that's why I love Mortician so much, coz they're never gonna change. Actually I prefer this full-length than the previous one ("Chainsaw Slaughter"). This time, "Domain of death" is a little closer to "Hacked up for barbecue" (my Mortician favourite), it sounds slightly more raw than heavy. Riffs have more of this eerie grind feeling. And you know, each time you play a Mortician record, it's like if a cursed wind of doom suddenly comes blowing in the room. Relentless intensity, barbaric heaviness, ultraviolent speed, riffs coming thrashing from every corner, guttural vocals from beyond the grave... It can be ultrafast raw grindcore one minute and totally heavy slow doom the next, so keep this in mind, though it's fast down-tuned grindcore oriented material for the major part. Another reason why I love Mortician, is that I'm an obsessed horror fan like them, and I just love their movie-inspired lyrics and referencial intros. This time around, their intros are very intense, I recognized David Cronenberg's The Brood (in song "Brood of Evil") & Scanners (in song "Telepathic Terror"), as well as Dario Argento's (my favourite director ever) Profondo Rosso a.k.a. Deep Red (also my favourite movie ever) (in song "The Hatchet Murders") and Tenebrae, another favourite of mine (in song "Tenebrae"). You also have a George Romero's Martin intro in song "Martin (The Vampire)", and a Sam Raimi's Evil Dead (Part 2 I think) intro in song "Necronomicon Exmortis". The only intros I didn't get were for "Domain of Death" (I think it was from "Mark of the Devil" though) and "Dr. Gore" (This one sounds like "Flesh for Frankenstein" but I'm not sure of it). Watch for the Pungent Stench and the Distrastrous Murmur cover versions too, they're really excellent. The cover artwork, once again, is brilliant (www.wesbenscoter.com) but the band pictures take a little too much space, I would have prefered more close-ups to this superb piece of artwork rather than those photos of Will & Roger, I know they're handsome but... well, OK. Anyway, I guess none of you really care about that, so to conclude I'll just say that Mortician is still a big hit with me. If you love adrenaline death-grind and creepy horror movies, "Domain of Death" will definitely satisfy your blood lust. For a little while. Personally, I already need more.

Tracks: 1)Brood of evil 2)Maimed and mutilated 3)Bonecrusher 4)The hatchet murders 5)Exctinction of mankind 6)Domain of death 7)Cannibalized 8)Pulsating protoplasma (Pungent Stench) 9)Martin (The vampire) 10)Telepathic terror 11)Mutilation of the human race 12)Wasteland of death 13)Dr. Gore 14)Extra uterine pregnancy (Disastrous murmur) 15)Tenebrae 16)Devastation 17)Necronomicon Exmortis

MORTICIAN "Chainsaw Dismemberment"

(Relapse Records)

Review: The Mortician new full-length album is finally out!!! I was really happy when I got it, but it didn't really hook me up at the first listening. Maybe I played it too loud to appreciate it, it was so loud I couldn't understand anything... I was maybe a little tired too... Anyway I listened to it a few more times now and I have a clearer opinion about this brand new piece of extreme brutality. It truly sounds like a straight follow-up to their "Hacked up for barbecue" album; first, the opening introduction is taken from "When a stranger calls up", like the opening intro from "Hacked up.."! This time, this is when police calls the babysitter to warn her that the killer is inside the house (hehe..). The introduction is perfect, it really sets the horrific mood. Musically, Mortician didn't really change either, they're still into frightening apocalyptic grind, energitized by insane drum machine blastbeatings, sometimes calmed down with the slower, doomy variations, and always supported by deep, raw vocals growled from beyond the grave, really sharp guitar riffs, and noisy bass. Compositions sound more in the vein of "House by the cemetary", with a clearer sound, of course, but not clear in the way of "Zombie apocalypse". Here, this is way far heavier, louder & suffocating. It can be a little confusing sometimes, as songs go on quite uncommon roads, structures are maybe less memorable than their old cult, songs like "Mortician", "Bloodcraving" or "Mortal massacre"... but they got quite more intense, heavier, and way more grindy! Really kick ass! As well, they reduced and shortened their introductions, after some fan's complaints... I think it's a loss of frightening sensations, probably a gain of continuity, but I'm quite disappointed by this new approach of intros! Anyway, they're always so influenced by horror movies, by the best movies, with intros from Fulci's "Zombie"(aka "Zombi 2", with the cult eye-skewering scene as intro on "Island of the dead"!), "Henry, portrait of a serial killer", "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2" or Dario Argento's "Inferno". They're also influenced by quite less interesting horror flicks like "Friday the 13th", "Silent Night, Bloody Night" or "I Drink You Blood and I Eat Your Skin" (which is funny though) and even "Scream" in "Stab". The artwork by mighty Wes Benscotter (again!) is wonderful, as you may guess, always inspired by Texas Chainsaw Massacre (like "Hacked up for barbecue")... Well, sometimes it seems to be like poor remake of their previous stuff, with parts two of songs like Slaughterhouse, Mortician... where they take the same song structures and remake it... this never really gets any better. But 95 % of the stuff is really brand new material. They stay honest to their style. And to me, this is the most important! Here we have 28 insane speed-crazed, heavy gore-grind-death tracks, one of the best sound production I ever heard for this kind of musick. Even though they kept the same direction, they now have something more straightforward in their style... Less intros, more musick! So, Let the chainsaw slaughter start again! It's never over! For those who don't know Mortician yet, this is really their most finished job I think, so try to have a listen to it the faster the better!

Tracks: 1)Stab 2)Fleshripper 3)Drowned In Your Blood 4)Mass Mutilation 5)Mauled Beyond Recognition 6)Rabid 7)Bloodshed 8)Decayed 9)Final Bloodbath 10)Island of The Dead 11)Brutalized 12)Slaughtered 13)The Crazies 14)Silent Night, Bloody Night 15)Chainsaw Dismemberment 16)Psychotic Rage 17)Funeral Feast 18)Wolfen 19)Dark Sanity 20)Camp Blood 21)Tormented 22)Slaughterhouse (pt.2) 23)Barbarian 24)Rats 25)Mater Tenebrum 26)Splattered 27)Obliteration 28)Lord of the Dead (Mortician pt. II)

MORTICIAN "Zombie Apocalypse"

(Relapse Records)
Release date: 1998
Total running time: 27:39

Review: Mortician is a different way among all the other death/grind bands. They're both close to death metal because of the extremely raw vocals coming from beyond the grave and the worked riffs as well as they're close to grindcore because of the very fast drumming + the short during of the songs; it's maybe due to different musical tastes in the band... But they created their unique sound. As well, the particularity of using a drum machine does not make their music sounding industrial or cyber; it just gives them a possibility to explore limits of the fastest blastbeats in the world; something nearly impossible to be performed by somewhat human. Now differences between this new mcd and Mortician's other releases are not really oblivious. These new compositions always keep the same structures as before: a heavy slow part which exlodes suddenly into insane grind. Or then, tracks entirely into grindcore vein and a few others with only slow parts. This mcd is also basicly released as a 5 tracks ep. The 5 other tracks are good studio bonus in which you can find two covers; one from canadians Slaughter called "F.O.D.(Fuck of Death)" and another from speed/death/grind legend Repulsion called "Horrified"(a classic song!). The sound quality of the five first songs is perfect and better than every Mortician past material; while bonus tracks sound is not as crystal clear. Then, you can realize that grind bands always waste alot of their power because of a poor production. Just compare "Incinerated" from this mcd and an old ass-kicking Mortician song from the shit-sounding "House by the cemetary"1993 mcd (for example "Barbaric cruelties")... and it just bump in your brain! "Barbaric cruelty" would be 10 times more catchy as it is actually with a clearer sound. Anyway, the only thing you can reproach to Mortician is to always deal with the same music style... unable to add more groovy or new fresh rythm. But for death/grind lovers(like me), brutality criterias are the only things to count on. This "Zombie Apocalypse" review would not be complete if the lyrics and the sound samples between tracks topics were not dealt; So, all I can say is that as before Mortician has not changed! Horror movies sound samples and lyrics about gore related themes didn't get lost somewhere else! And as I see you can't find from which movies they stole the intro, I will give you some clues: there are samples from "Eaten Alive"(aka "Death Trap") by Tobe Hooper, "Dawn of the Dead" by George Romero, "Slaughterhouse" and "Children of the Corn". Last word is a lyrical phrase from "Zombie Apocalypse": "Bodies stripped of flesh, Hell now walks the earth, Zombie plague of death". I love zombies! Get it, right now!

Tracks: 1)Devoured alive 2)Incinerated 3)Zombie apocalypse 4)Slaughterhouse 5)Hell on earth 6)F.O.D. 7)Horrified 8)Charred corpses 9)Dissected 10)Blood harvest

MORTICIAN "Hacked up for Barbecue"

(Relapse Records)
Release date: Halloween 1997
Total running time: 50:16

Review:
"Hacked up for barbecue" is the first real Mortician full-lenght album!!! with their personal key ingredients to create some of the most intense grind-death music ever heard: amazing and fast-as-light programmed drumming, extremely deep growls, razor sharp guitars and noisy bass. Some of the most catchy song structures. Only keeping the good things from both grindcore and death metal styles. The simple song structures, the straightforward, blazing fastness and the rawness are inspired by grindcore; the vocals, the varied guitar riffs and the slower thrashy parts are borrowed to death metal. Now, the thing that make different than any other band is their immense influence into their lyrics first. And the use of long movie sample as intros to songs, which is so far the best way to set a horrifying mood inside a good grind-death album, and in the same time organizing a cool game for horror freaks, where you have to recognize the movie sources! Always really entertaining... You'll find "When a stranger calls up", "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre", "Cannibal Ferrox"(aka "Make Them Die Slowly"), "Mortuary", "Suspiria", "Phantasm" among various others... 24 tracks for 50 minutes of pure fucking extreme brutality(with amazing sound production!), a milestone of horror-grind-death!

Tracks: 1)Bloodcraving 2)Embalmed Alive 3)Cremated 4)Three on a Meathook 5)Brutally Mutilated 6)Deranged Insanity 7)Cannibal Feast 8)Blown to Pieces 9)Fog of Death 10)Brutal Disfigurement 11)Apocalyptic Devastation 12)Inquisition 13)Hacked up for Barbecue 14)Abolition 15)Necrocannibal 16)Ripped in Half 17)Morbid Butchery 18)Decapitated 19)Drilling for Brains 20)Eaten Alive by Maggots 21)Witches' Coven 22)Worms 23)Annihilation 24)Mortician

MORTICIAN "House by the Cemetery"

(Relapse Records)
Release date: 1995
Total running time: 24:48

Review:
"House by the cemetery"... If you worship Lucio Fulci (Rest in peace) movies as I do, you must listen to this Mortician EP! This is probably the most atmospheric Mortician release. I do not mean atmospheric into their music, but inside their horrfying intros! This is their best work with intros, taken from Lucio Fulci's "The Beyond" & "House by the cemetery" as well as "Driller Killer", "Cannibal apocalypse"... And even ends by the cult and always so amazing final scene from Sam Raimi the Evil Dead! But well, the most important is the music! So here we have Mortician's rawest material! Brutal death/grind with gore-encrusted sound production, where the fast drum machine leads everything. It comes with "no speed limit" parts, moderate breaks & heavier doomy parts; but always with gory guttural vocals and the macabre low tuned guitars and noisy bass riffs... Check the Napalm death cover "Scum" and the Celtic frost cover "Procreation of the wicked", they fucking distort the originals!!! The sound is weak but raw violence is intact, as well the sensation, of FEAR! The darkest Mortician release without doubt!

Tracks: 1)Defiler of the dead 2)Barbaric Cruelties 3)World Damnation 4)Driller Killer 5)House by the cemetary 6)Procreation of the wicked 7)Scum 8)Flesh Eaters 9)Gateway to Beyond 10)Noturam Demondo
