BIRDFLESH "Night of the Ultimate Mosh" Cd

(Razorback Records)
Release date:
2002
Running time: 27:28

Review:
I give this full marks! Birdflesh delivers in all departments, it's great grindcore with amazing chemistry, mind-blowing grindcore song-writing, the exact right amount of thrashing metal influences, raging roars, wacky screams, a few excellent pitch-shifted backing growls, the adequate sound production (powerful and clear but avoiding to fall in the 'unbearably heavy' category). The band has a weird sense of humor that's not for everybody, but Birdflesh is about the only band that actually makes me laugh, many bands try to be funny but most of the time they're just not. Also, most bands with humor as a main theme are often into hard-to-listen noise-grind. Birdflesh might be weird and fun, but their grindcore is well-structured and it totally kicks ass. There's a bit of Macabre (without the boring technical aspect), a bit of Repulsion/old Napalm Death-kinda riffs, a bit of that good old crusty swedish sound and the same striking energy SxOxB used to have on "Leave Me Alone" & "What's the Truth?" (Personal favorites!). You have 22 tracks in 27 minutes of infallibly catchy and fast grindcore, hysterically funny lyrics, wonderful cheesy artwork and much much more... A masterpiece from start to finish. Some people are probably gonna be put off by the humor, but personally I'd rather listen to bands that don't take themselves so fucking seriously, and I think Birdflesh is just the best and freshest grindcore band around these days, end of the line.

Tracks: 1)Coffinfucker 2)Master of violence 3)Gore in Gore out 4)Arabian psycho 5)Night of the ultimate mosh 6)The rolling massgrave 7)Above, where are you? 8)Catmouth 9)Gut to kill 10)Bloodshed attack 11)Eternal emotions 12)Slaughter of flies 13)Bowelthrasher 14)Kid of the brown vomit 15)The evil pig 16)Everything is shit 17)Dance on the frozen desert 18)Crowes in the nose 19)Death and insanity 20)Carmolesting dead 21)Suicide maniac 22)Victim of the grind

LORD GORE "The Autophagous Orgy" Cd

(Razorback Records)
Release date:
2002

Review:
Lord Gore has been around for a few years I think, and well, here's their debut full length album. Their style is old school heavy death metal with a strong gorecore influence. Nothing blazing fast, just something truly sinister and dirty sounding in the vein of Autopsy and Impetigo. Of course, Lord Gore braces many other influences. The solid death metal guitar riffs resemble the ones of Massacre on "From Beyond" (with a bit of old Immolation/Cannibal Corpse in the mix as well), the goregasmic vocals extravaganza (proudly performed 'without effects') are very much in the vein of Gut and you can also add to all that the obnoxious attitude of the infamous Meatshits... The Hentai cover art is a peak of sadistic pornogore madness (what the hell are censors waiting to ban this?). You've got utterly repugnant movie samples (New York Ripper & stuff even worse etc...) and equally unnameable lyrics (I'm speaking about the few lines I could decypher among the gurgling growls, coz lyrics are unfortunately not included in the booklet... why?). The songs are all monuments of nauseous, gory filth and vileness, lengthy, heavy and entangled in gooey sound textures. The point of "The Autophagous Orgy" is not to be the fastest death metal ever, but to craft music in order to make people physically ill and repulsed, and guess what, it works! For that matter, Lord Gore rely on splattery vocals, and make an inventive use of watery, blood-gurgling, guttural vocals. I'm pretty sure this album succeeds in being one of the sickest ever in the gorecore genre, the band's music is a bit overblown sometimes but the album's all so delightfully abundant in blood and guts... Gorehounds will just love it!

Tracks: 1)Intro 2)Morguewhore 3)Krash Kourse in Psychopathology 4)Rape Camp 5)The Forgotten Flesh 6)Last Supper (The Autophagous) 7)Involuntary vaginal vermin slut 8)Post Coital Eruption 9)Nekro-Erotik Art 10)Zombie molestation (raped by the dead) 11)Lord Gore 12)Breakfast at the Manchester Morgue

LYMPHATIC PHLEGM/S.M.E.S. Split Cd

(Bizarre Leprous Productions)
Release date:
2002

Lymphatic Phlegm Review:
Well, Lymphatic Phlegm is pretty well-known among goregrind afficionados I think. The big appeal for this bresilian band is mostly because of their purely pathological concept, and a music style that goes back to the roots of the genre, there's not that many bands still playing it that way anymore... Their sound quality is always a bit rough around the edge, but if you compare it to their early stuff, it's actually a huge improvement. So, here we have typical goregrind, of the most basic kind, with guitar riffs à la Exulceration/old Agathocles, always a whole lot of reverb on the guitars, blasting and rolling programmed drums and one hundred percent pitch-shifted gory vocals! Lymphatic Phlegm is damn enjoyable. Just because Pathological Goregrind in such a pure form is really rare these days. Lymphatic Phlegm does a really neat craftsman job, it's truly fun to listen to. Those endless, nonsensical patho song titles also crack me up... And how cool is that cover?

S.M.E.S. Review: Now to S.M.E.S... Basicly, it's the dutch answer to Libido Airbag. Definitely one of the finest Cyber Gore/Grind acts around, perhaps the finest, with Microphallus... This stuff is totally computerised, with pounding and grinding programmed drums, some kind of dissonant electronic bass sound and sickening, distorted, pitch-shifted gurgling vocals. It's highly effective, fast, heavy and just kicking ass! Alot of songs have a humorous tone with a video game kind of sound and other weird stuff... It's grinding and speed-crazed, with a pretty tasteless sense of humor (check out the cover!). People into demented cyber-grind should just love it.

Tracks: LYMPHATIC PHLEGM: 1)Necrosis of a rather Extensive Part of the Jejunum-Ileum 2)Inhalation of Vomitus (Subsequent Pneumo-Interstitial Emphysema) 3)Happy Sickness of Life (Exulceration) 4)Congenital Tumour Constituted by Embryonic Tissues and Foetal Residues 5)Multiple Induced Foetal Abnormalities in Embryopathia 6)Estimation of Creatine-Phosphokinase as an additional Method For Identification of Seminal Stains 7)Intramyorcadial Platelet Embolus Evidence 8)Growth of the Mucous Mebrane III Vein Tissue and Stomach Subjecent Fiber Tissue Layer 9)Inorganic variety of Chronic Tuberculous Peritonitis 10)Malignant Tumour Resultant from epithelial cells Proliferation
S.M.E.S.: 11)Trinocle 12)Dunn 13)Intercoursenet 14)Afleiding 15)Junglefever 16)Ageties 17)Munch-Crunch 18)Cificare 19)Torturarse 20)Miracles 21)Licky Verf 22)Uloock Goregious 23)Topbutter 24)Milk vampire 25)fartlig 26)Screwsome 27)In Eggony!

GROSS "Raisins de la Mort" Cd

(Black Hole Productions)
Release date: 2002

Review: Cool new album by prolific one-man grind act Gross. It's named "Raisins de la Mort" after a movie by french horror director Jean Rollin, it scores 38 damn tracks with titles like "Piles of Poisoned People", "The Mutant Larva", "Vomica Drain and Bowel Contamination"... Gross makes extremely insane, hysterical grindcore in the vein of Decomposing Serenity, with heavy and dissonant guitars, psychotic shrieks, blasting and pounding fucked up electronic drums, just hyper-energic, lofi, violent and basic grindcore songs. It's really alot of grinding fun. Really rough grind, alot of sick humor, bizarre cover versions of Nuclear Death, Pathologist, Anal Cunt, Creamface & Demonic Orgy... And as usual you get Lee's brilliant macabre artwork to feast your eyes on... This time this gets a cool distribution by Black Hole Productions from Brazil, try to grab a copy!

DROWNING "Age Old Nemesis" Cd

(Bones Brigade)
Release date:
2002

Review: Excellent brutal death metal act from France. The album is pretty much flawless, from masterful composition work, impressive sound production to great musicianship and technic. The execution is just great. Thrashing guitar riffs, a few solis, powerful vocals, real tight drumming and worked, complicated song structures. Drowning's style is direct, striking and highly effective. Very energic like early Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse and maybe Incantation too. So, overall, it's a neat, consistent and noteworthy album. Bones Brigade gives it a great looking layout and the booklet contains the lyrics. The only drawback is that the style is a bit too routine-like and typically US style, but originality isn't really what diehard death metallers are looking for anyway, so... if you crave for higher quality catchy death metal, this will certainly satisfy you.

Tracks: 1)Frozen Inferno 2)The Enemy Within 3)The Lesser Breed 4)My Name is Retribution 5)Winter Descends 6)Rise and Conquer 7)All is Dust 8)Downfall 9)Arson 10)Days of Decline

RETALIATION "Violence Spreads Its Drape" 45 Rpm 12" Lp

(Putrid Filth Conspiracy)
Release date:
2002

Review:
This Lp is basicly 28 tracks of compulsive, ferocious and bleak grindcore rubbed in your face; no time-outs to catch your breath, no pauses, no slowing down, Retaliation (Sweden) grinds mercilessly until the point of ear-drum rupture. Your head's constantly compressed between percussive relentless blasts, desperately piercing shriekings, raging roars and a crushing wall of down-tuned guitar riffs. Retaliation's grindcore is carefully basic and raw, something between hysterical powerviolent crust à la DropDead & old school grind in early Napalm death vein. Certainly one of the most intense, blazing fast band in the current so called extreme underground scene. This is one of the few bands that truly have that special grindcore chemistry, not so many bands actually have it, but I really think Retaliation does. Song titles, reeking of obnoxious nihilism, are perfectly married to the resentful tone of Retaliation grind style, raging and destructive. This Lp is definitely one of this year's major grind events. Extra plus side is the stylish layout and the fact that it's out on vinyl. Not enough grind Lp's out these days! Out on the great swedish label Putrid Filth Conspiracy.

Tracks: SIDE A: 1)Second nature 2)Outrage 3)Things never change 4)En död mans dom 5)Fucked for life 6)All is lost 7)Now what? 8)Zero tollerance 9)Everything is wrong 10)No peace 11)Grinding black massacre 12)Witch burning 13)You never knew 14)Salt mine
SIDE B: 1)Worlds apart 2)Boredom and frustration 3)Collapsing lungs 4)The one who left you 5)Dedicated rape 6)A piece of this 7)Something different 8)Never laid to rest 9)Depressions encore 10)Kiss of steel 11)Ejaculated whore 12)One foot in the grave 13)Broken dreams 14)You're fucked

REGURGITATE "Hatefilled Vengeance" 45 Rpm 12" Lp

(Putrid Filth Conspiracy)
Release date:
2002

Review:
Regurgitate strikes harder than ever with this new Lp! Nice to hear the band so live and kicking! While Side B contains brand new Regurgitate material (I'll talk about that later), Side A revisits a handful of Rgte classics from "Effortless Regurgitation..." & "Concrete Human Torture". They make new with old. The songs are practically identical in their structure of course, but now the band has a new sound, they make their old material sound a bit different. The drums especially, it sounds sharper and more turbulent. The gurgling vocal effects are alot different as well. So, well... these new versions are definitely more powerful and energic, and the sound production is way better than before but I still have a thing for the older versions (heavier and more creepy-sounding)...
Now let's get to the meat of this new Lp... The exciting thing about "Hatefilled Vengeance" is obviously to hear the brand new stuff! And well, it's really great stuff. In the same vein as their "Carnivorous Erection" album, maybe even better structured. And some of the guitar riffs reminded me of the older Regurgitate feeling, so that's cool. Now, if you thought Regurgitate was starting to sound alot like Nasum on "Carnivorous Erection", well I thought this new material was still heading this way. Of course, Regurgitate delivers more straightforwardly violent songs, strictly gurgling pitch-shifted vocals and alot less slow moments than Nasum. But for this new material the pitch-shifting effects are rather downplayed and almost sound like backing vocals, while hysterical shriekings take a bigger place... It gives the band a more violent tone (à la Retaliation) but the trademark Regurgitate sickening gore side seems to be faded a bit. Still their grindcore is definitely one of the most effective and convincing I've ever heard. Regurgitate is definitely one of the most important grind bands in activity. There was a time not so long ago when the band was in some sort of coma, so let's celebrate the fact that they're playing now and putting out masterpieces like "Hatefilled Vengeance". Yay! This baby is out on Putrid Filth Consiracy (Sweden) and yeah, the artwork are layout kicks serious butt!

Tracks: SIDE ASSAULT: 1)Confluent Macular Drug Eruption 2)Vulva Fermentation 3)Complete Rectal Prolapse 4)Testicular Trauma 5)Cloudy, greyish vomitus 6)Fleshmangler 7)Bulging Vaginal Septum 8)Bleeding Peptic Ulcer 9)Deranged Menarche injection 10)Drastical Decapitation
SIDE BLOODSHED: 1)Emethic Jizz Treatment 2)Destined to burn 3)Hatefilled Vengeance 4)666 Casualties 5)Deathlike Incest 6)Choke That Piggy 7)Devastation and Nuclear Apocalypse 8)Disciples of Obliteration

BATHTUB SHITTER "Mark a Muck" 7" Ep

(Putrid Filth Conspiracy)
Release date:
2002

Review:
Japan's freshest grindcore band has this cool Ep out on Putrid Filth Conspiracy. As usual, this Bathtub Shitter ep is a barrage of enraged grindcore, overloaded with hysterical shrieks and vicious guttural growls, raw as hell guitar riffs, and an insane whirlpool of fast drumming. Their brutal grind style also has a fun side, with a few seconds short song, and some really wacky screams... The stuff on Side A is pure, violent grind that comes with an overwhelming sense of speed and heaviness. Side B is alot more calm, with a long, and rather slow song that although burst into something more grindy in the end. All in all, a great Ep. Anyone interested in fine grindcore Ep's, this is just really great and original stuff! Highly recommended.

Tracks: SIDE A: 1)Intro 2)Let's go to shit - Filth will be back - I am son of soil 3)For independence 4)Effortless Regurgitation of Bright Red Blood (Regurgitate)
SIDE B: 1)Mark a Muck

LENG TCH'E "Death by a Thousand Cuts " Cd

(The Spew Records)
Release date:
2002

Review:
Here we have one brand new, higher quality grinding death metal album released by the promising italian label, The Spew Records (apparently resuming where greatly missed Headfucker Records left off). Leng Tch'e is grindcore-flavored groovy brutal death metal and it most notably has Sven from Aborted as one of the members. If you know Aborted, well Leng Tch'e is in the same vein, with the same flawless powerful sound production, and only tighter, more straightforwardly grinding songs. So, you can naturally expect excellent musicianship and great song-writing, this is simply extremely competent death-grind... Songs are varied and almost never get boring, it constantly jumps from groove to blastbeats, from pure grind to big-ass metal... Musically, this album reminds me of Sanity's Dawn on "Mangled in the Meatgrinder" (without the gory vocal effects though!!), Groinchurn, Dead, Hemdale and of course Aborted. The vocals are a mix of predominant wacky screams (particularly reminiscent of the high-pitched Gut vocals!) and supportive sickening growls. The band's visual concept appears to be sado-masochism on the cover, but the lyrics are in fact a strange mix of social lyrics (à la Nasum) and downright weird lyrics (à la Blood Duster). Throughout all the influences, the band certainly has a feel of its own, and an obvious sense of humor (nice selection of fun intro samples)... In the end, it's a very good album, involving mucho musical violence, great powerful sound production and lush cd artwork/layout. Most people should love this one.

Tracks: 1)Initiate Murder Sequence 2)Strangled by Underwear 3)Hypocriscene 4)I know where you've shit last summer 5)FUCK Eddy De Dapper 6)Inferior Superiorism 7)Get Rid of the Rock in your Name 8)Cockporn 9)The Regular know-it-all 10)Chasms 11)Schizotrendic 12)The Scheme 13)Straight Outta Boerecote II 14)Mosh of the Clowns 15)Human Ignorance 16)Graveyard Shift 17)Delusions of Grandeur 18)T.P.

MUSCLEHEADS "Politicians Dead" Demo Tape

Release date: 2002

Review: Excellent Crust-Grindcore band, minimalistic in a very positive way, grinding and tight as hell. You've got the most basic crusty riffs, kick-ass drumming, brutal growls and screams. Something between Agathocles, Malignant Tumour, & old Extreme Noise Terror! For a rehearsal demo tape I thought the sound was more than great, the band is real tight, basic and very enjoyable. The sound on the extra live tracks is not so great though, but it's listenable too. This a band's from Greece and if you're into true underground grindcore, this is a band worth checking out!
Muscleheads should have a split with Human Error (Hun), a 3 way split tape with Confusion (Ita), Senseless on ZAS Autoproduzioni and a split Ep with Bloodsuckers.

VISCERAL BLEEDING "Remnants of Deprivation" Cd

(Retribute Records)
Release date:
2002

Review:
Good brutal death metal album out on UK label, Retribute Records (they notably released Soils of Fate album). What we have here is pretty traditional brutal death metal. It's intense, powerful, extremely fast-paced and tightly performed... Expert, sharp and thrashing guitar riffs, flawless crushing drumming and deep guttural growling is what you'll find here. It's nothing amazingly original, but for amateurs of quality brutal death metal, this album will most certainly be extremely satisfying. The most obvious influences are the ones of Suffocation, Cryptopsy and Dying Fetus... Intricate song structures, complex guitar work and highly technical solis are mixed with sheer brutality and overwhelming speed level. It's definitely brutal death metal of the fastest and most technical kind. And this Visceral Bleeding album is definitely effective, fast and will satisfy the most demanding death metal fan. Even though I must say I'm not such a big fan of technical music myself. (it has the tendency to get on my nerves).

Tracks: 1)Spreader of disease 2)Carved down to the bone 3)Gasping... 4)Remnants of Deprivation 5)State of Putrefaction 6)To Disgrace Condemned 7)Time to Retaliate 8)Butcher Knife Impalement 9)Explosive Surgery

SERRANDO CODOS "Desmembraciones" Demo Cdr

(Dis-organ-izing Records)
Release date:
2002

Review:
Straight out of Spain comes Serrandos Codos. It's an interesting, bleak one-man grind project. Fueled by blasting programmed drums over a wall of dissonant grind guitar riffs and distorted vocals. The sound is extremely harsh and raw, but the composition work is interesting and energic enough to keep you hooked up. It's a noteworthy project that emanates a lot of bad vibes and have a good grind chemistry. The horror-themed song titles written in spanish will remind you of Machetazo. The music itself is more reminiscent of Lymphatic Phlegm and Decomposing Serenity. Another talent from Spain to look for!

(Razorback Records)
Release date:
2002
Running time: 31:36

Review:
Razorback Records keeps treating us with the finest grindgore releases around and there's still alot to come... It feels like it's raining masterpieces all over the place, sorry to sound like I'm kissing ass but it's how I feel. I'm happy to say this new Machetazo doesn't disappoint, quite the contrary, it could be the best Razorback release (although you have to be rational, it'd be a tie between this, Engorged, Ghoul and Gruesome Stuff Relish debut albums... hard to pick a definite favorite really!). First there's something special about this brandnew cd, it's the black & white cd layout and cover artwork. It works really great for the band, it looks basic and it's simply one of the neatest layout/artwork among Razorback releases yet.
But anyway, let's just get to the meat of the review. "Trono de Huesos" is all about Machetazo at its raging, grinding best. Machetazo's tenacious rawness and fresh grindcore/old school death metal style imposed with "Carne de Cementerio" is still intact, except it's faster, more menacing, aggressive and grinding than ever. Movie samples have been reduced to a smaller portion and leave more space to the songs themselves, which have a truly enticing depth to them, that and infallible intensity. Their brilliant grind needs no artifacts. They get pretty close to Terrorizer, Assuck, Repulsion and early Carcass territory. I'm not gonna try to describe the band's sound more, it's just a grind band with unique chemistry, a band that kicks ass wih confidence and strength. It's definitely gonna rank as one of the best album for this damn year, so I strongly suggest you take a listen to this. Please note that the album features a fantastic Motorhead cover version! Brings back great memories, it's been an eternity I haven't listened to those old Motorhead records! Also note that "Trono de Huesos" will be released as a 12"LP by Throne Records (www.thronerecords.com)

Tracks: 1)Banquete Funerario 2)Garrote Dil 3)Enterradas en el Jardin 4)Un Vestido de Pellejo Humano 5)Purificación a través del Dolor 6)La Flema 7)Engendro 8)Trono de Huesos 9)Bolsas con Sangre 10)Yo Fui un Caníbal Adolescente 11)Lepra 12)Ataque Simio 13)Ace of Spades 14)Los Cuentos del Muñon Gangrenoso

KUTABARE Rehearsal demo Cdr

Release date: 2002
Running time: 28:24

Review:
I apologise for my slight case of ignorance when it comes to Undinism, I often heard about the band's great reputation, but I never actually heard anything from them, so I won't be able to effectively compare Undinism & Kutabare, sorry about that. Anyway, if you didn't know it yet, Kutabare is the new band formed by some Undinism & Corpse Molestation members. The lyrics are fairly humourous, creepy and bizarre, I think they are a primordial ingredient in Kutabare (just go to their site & read em), it's really alot of twisted fun. Musically, Kutabare's particularly interesting too, it's bass-driven, totally low-tuned grind/death, the kind of grind/death that's fresh and catchy (think Dead, Gut with a bit of Autopsy). Alot of it is midtempo, sometimes slow, there's quite alot of groove as well, and occasional kick-ass speed-crazed parts. Mostly it sounds downright heavy and dirty, with very low-pitched grunts and growls, really guttural and kinda gurgling. I'm not sure all the songs had vocals on this cd, since it's a rehearsal. But overall, the stuff sounds really really great, if the band ever gets to record studio material the result could be crushing! If you're lovesick about Dead, you should easily get into Kutabare. Undinism fans might naturally wanna check out this sick new band as well.

Tracks: 1)Religiously frustrated 2)Dildo of death 3)Maggot laced meal 4)Rime of the ancient marinated corpse 5)Siamese twins (ones a dead foeatus) 6)Assassin 7)Frotage the fromage 8)Our music is a transmission of alien intelligence 9)Guinea worm 10)Moistened cunt

RAGING RETARDS "The Candiru Complex" Cd

(Traumatogenic/Menace to Sobriety Records)
Release date:
2002
Running time: 44:44

Review: Here you have harsh and extreme cyber noisecore/grind, the whole thing is oversaturated on purpose and the result is totally apocalytpic. Most of it is devoid of vocals... Just expect sizzling industrial noisecore going through an impressive number of weird sound effects and filters, heavily computerised sonorities and downright bizarre distorted samples. Basicly, it's a complete mindfuck. It reminds me of Libido Airbag at times, only alot more fucked up, harsh and insane. If you're up for dehumanised, destructive, nihilistic mass chaos, well that should your kind of crap! Out on Traumatogenic...
