THE COUNTY MEDICAL EXAMINERS "Forensic Fugues and Medicolegal Medleys" Cd

(Razorback Records - RR14)
Release date:
2002

Review:
For an album that's supposed to be a replica of Carcass' "Symphonies of Sickness", I found this to be incredibly refreshing and the band is definitely one of most skilful grind/death bands I've heard in a while. Along the years, many bands have tried to recapture Carcass' spirit. General Surgery, Pathologist, Necrony... but none managed to sound as close to the true Carcass essence like The County Medical Examiners managed to here (though they probably didn't try to as hard as them).
I'll admit originality is not the first thing I look for in a band, so I don't have any problem with the premise of TCME. Now, the band could have turned out sounding totally unnatural trying to imitate Carcass; but they're actually dead-on; these 2 guys and a gal have some great chemistry between them, they're tight and they seem to know exactly what they're doing.
The Carcass period re-captured here is clearly "Symphonies of Sickness". Back then, Jeff Walker's vocals weren't as leading as in the later days, they were more like back-throat spattery gurgles, and Bill Steer's low-pitched roars were alot more prominent, as well as the effective pitch-shifted gory growls backing them up. So, yes, early Carcass' vocals are faithfully reproduced here, in all their squeaky and grunty glory, and actually closer to something like Catasexual Urge Motivation than say, Exhumed.
Regarding the lyrics, I think
sadism and dark humour are a little less pronounced than they were in Carcass, the lyrics seem a little more technical and literal... I didn't notice any song about grave-robbing for one thing. All I can say is that the song titles and the lyrics are very pretty; full of neat medicolegal terms no one ever heard, and this stuff even seems to be pathologically accurate, something I doubt most "pathological" grind bands' lyrics are these days.
Anyway, this album is very easy on the ears; compositions can be restrained and complex, and then burst into savage grind. There's also an overall raw feel, as well as a very unique repugnant vibe. This stuff feels clear, limpid, it's fast-paced, complex, catchy and many more things... And I'm pretty certain it'll stay on my cd player for a quite long while.
Very sorry for the review being mostly a comparison between Carcass & The County Medical Examiners... But hey, the band took this clone thing pretty far... Some of their songs definitely sound like a new take on specific Carcass titles... A good example of this is the song "Algor Mortis", which is all so similar to a Carcass tune called "Ruptured in Purulence"... Also the cover collage seemed to be assembled in an almost identical way the Symphonies of Sickness cover art was... Here's a band that gives the word obsession a whole new meaning... I love it!

Tracks: 1)Autopsy suite - "Morbid efficient morgue design" 2)Medicocriminal entomology - "Necrophagous chitinous critters and the scientists who study them" 3)Vitreous humor - "From the eyeball to the forensic toxicologist, this oily fluid has secrets to reveal..." 4)Epicedium for epidermal slippage - "Slouching skin, draping, dermatological mess..." 5)NH2(CH2)4NH2 & C5H14N2 - (Putrescine & cadaverine) - "Tepid twin chemical cohorts of putridity..." 6)Organ harvest (The anatomical gift act) - "Gruesome benefactors and their glistening final bequeatments..." The PMI Trilogy: 7)Rigor mortis: posthumous muscular rigidity - "Stiffened corpses in the throes of postmortem rigor..." 8)Algor mortis: the linear rate of cadaveric cooling - "Icy cadavers conquered by death's freezing embrace..." 9)Livor mortis: gravitational blood pooling - "Lividity sodden carcasses, blanched and bruised maroon... 10)Pugilistic burn postures - "Heat induced muscle constriction found in carbonized stiffs..." 11)Y-shaped thoracoabdominal incision - "The introductory necropsy slice..." 12)Y=1285/X (Formula for progression of putrefaction)

ROT "Old Dirty Grindcores" Cd

(2+2=5 Records )
Release date:
2002

Review:
Definitely not the most loved grind band on earth, no idea why! Rot always kicked serious ass to me. I remember having listened to "Cruel Face of Life" alot back in the day, they were on my top grindcore list and they still are! One of the last few bands that keep their grindcore basic and pure, and have never strayed from their usual grindcore formula. Maybe for some punk songs here and there, but just a few. Anyway... Here, on this cd, is an impressive collection of some unreleased stuff and a complete set of old Rot Ep's and stuff released along the years... All studio material. It starts with recent unreleased material that has a sharp and clear sound; these are truly crushing compositions... simple, catchy, fast grindcore that blows everything away. As the cd progresses, the sound quality regresses and the band keeps getting rawer and more primal as we go back in time. The last songs have really crappy sound quality but you can hear the band in their most savage state. The growling vocals are some of the most grotesque and primal I've ever heard, the riffs are strictly grind-oriented like the drums alternating between pounding blasts and crust-core-type midtempos... The Agathocles and early Napalm Death ("Scum" period) influence is ever present in this band, although they definitely have their own sound, recognizable among many others. In my opinion this cd is brilliant, and highly recommended to true grindcore freaks!

LIFE IS A LIE Cd

(Läjä Rekords )
Release date:
2002

Review:
Life is a Lie is a band from Sao Paulo, Brazil, and this album has got a lot of rage going. I thought the sound quality was exceptionally good, very clear, allowing the band's grinding ability to shine. I'm not sure how to describe their style. It's very metal/hardcore sounding, but also extremely fast-paced. This band's got a lot of raw power and knows to compose catchy tunes, they're very consistent musically... Vocals are more of the screamy type, pretty high and hysterical and filled with anger. Great stuff overall, well-produced, very tight technically. It's got a thick, well-designed booklet with lyrics in portugese (plus a lyric sheet translated in english as well). Awesome album as a whole in my opinion!

Tracks: 1)O novo pagao 2)Gloria & Guerra 3)Pamela 4)Ossimorpmoc moc sanatas 5)Glasolina 6)Estrela 7)6 horas no inferno 8)Doença 9)A dança 10)We're Satan's generation 11)Festa num carro em altra velocidade 12)Pensamentos de um assassino serial, comendo 13)Deja-vu

REGURGITATE "Hatefilled Vengeance" Cd

(Relapse Records)
Release date:
2002

Review:
I already reviewed the Lp version of this here so I'll keep this short. This is the same thing re-released on cd by Relapse Records, with a different artwork (which looks great; not as great as the Lp though, in my opinion). Anyway, this is top notch grindcore/gore we have here... The first part are pretty faithful new versions of old Rgte songs, with the new, rawer Rgte sound... Pitch-shifted gurgles, good old grindy and crusty riffs and fast-as-hell drums... The rest is the brand new material, definitely kick-ass stuff in their usual fast and basic grind style, only they apparently dropped the vocal effects in favor of intense high pitched screaming. That's fine with me, the band's always kicking to me... Although I doubt all Rgte fans will be unanimously cheering that decision. Still, Rgte is always bad-ass grindcore to the bones to me! "Hatefilled Vengeance" rules!

Tracks: 1)Confluent Macular Drug Eruption 2)Vulva Fermentation 3)Complete Rectal Prolapse 4)Testicular Trauma 5)Cloudy, greyish vomitus 6)Fleshmangler 7)Bulging Vaginal Septum 8)Bleeding Peptic Ulcer 9)Deranged Menarche injection 10)Drastical Decapitation 11)Emethic Jizz Treatment 12)Destined to burn 13)Hatefilled Vengeance 14)666 Casualties 15)Deathlike Incest 16)Choke That Piggy 17)Devastation and Nuclear Apocalypse 18)Disciples of Obliteration

SWEDISH ASSAULT (Various Artists)

(Relapse Records)
Release date:
2002

Review:
In case the title of this cd isn't clear to you, all the bands involved in this release are from Sweden. For some reason, all swedish bands are tight and have a big heavy sound, no idea why, but... good for them! Like all Relapse "Assault" underground series cd's the stuff here might not be all brand new material. Personally, I only knew like, half the bands here, so that's cool.
Sayyadina: Metal/Grindcore... Actually original song writing and skilful musicianship, the band is also pretty violent. Very metal guitar riffs and a great sense of speed (blasting drums)... So, that's pretty killer grind with a few progressive elements to it and some atypical riffs as well.
Assel: Here we go into rawer, more violent territory... That's fast, straightforward grindcore/crust, very intense, complete with rage-filled vocals (rather high pitched), crusty riffs, tight and fast drums... Perhaps my fave band on this cd, with Birdflesh. Including a Protes Benct cover, now that's a sign of good taste!
Genocide Superstar: A mix of good old hardcore à la Discharge, big-sound metal (Motorhead) and rock n' roll. Totally heavy sound and aggressive riffs all around. Vocals are mostly low hardcore-type shouts with occasional manic screams. Think Entombed meets Nasum. Good, clean and sharp metal but not exactly my fave kind of stuff.
Gadget: Fucking loud grindcore/crust, not unlike... Nasum. A big sound, intense songs... It's heavy, perhaps too heavy at times... effective, catchy and straight to the point. Low growls and screams, big-ass riffs and bludgeoning blasting drums. Good stuff.
Birdflesh: Now here's the band I'm most familiar with on this cd... Insane grindcore with important metal influences. Fast-paced, catchy, pounding and grinding, thrashing and crushing, shouting and screaming... Plus their personal touch, which is wacky, absurd humour. I like listening to them on vinyl, but it's great to hear some more of their stuff on cd!
Disfear: Total Crustcore! Crusty riffs, crusty midtempo drums, crusty vocals... One word: Discharge. For the 2 first songs, the last one is a cover song that sounds pretty different, more like regular hardcore.
So, all in all, this compilation kicks ass, that's quality swedish grind, hardcore & metal. Aggressive bands with fucking loud sound productions...

Tracks: Sayyadina: 1)Retaliation 2)Civilization 3)Automation 4)Compulsion 5)Stagnation 6)Confrontation 7)Outrage
Assel: 8)Enkeirikted 9)Forlat 1-2-3 10)Hopplos (Protes Benct) 11)Mutual Friends 12)Spindlar I Natei

TODAY IS THE DAY Double Cd

(Relapse Records)
Release date:
2002

Review:
Now, this one is really hard to listen to... I've liked some of Today is the Day stuff in the past, but I definitely had trouble going through these 2 cd's one without feeling some sort of headache. Their stuff kinda gets on your nerves, I guess it's intentional, although some of it would be more effective with a slight effort of making things a tad more catchy. Anyway, this is a double cd... Some kind of collection of many old recordings... That's aggressive metal, kinda elaborate, a little experimental, many original ideas, there's a noticeable good work on weird sounds, saturated vocals, grating metal riffs... That's twisted, depressive, agressive and original metal, but I don't feel talking alot about it, I was not really enthused by this one.

Tracks: CD X: 1)Maggots and Riots 2)Criminal 3)Distortion Of Nature 4)Crooked 5)Butterflies 6)Unearthed 7)The Descent 8)Death Requiem 9)Christianized Magick 10)Voice Of Reason: Vicious Barker 11)Face After The Shot 12)The Ivory Of Self Hate 13)The Nailing 14)Mistake 15)Invincible 16)Aurora 17)Sadness Will Prevail

LYMPHATIC PHLEGM / AUTOPHAGIA / FECULENT GORETOMB / ULCERRHOEA Split Cd

(Deranged for Leftovers Productions/Rotten Foetus Productions)
Release date:
2002

Now that's a nice split release! Lymphatic Phlegm is first. Really neat, well-crafted goregrind. The songs are always pretty interesting, sometimes they're catchy as hell and sometimes not really, but I love the sound of it. Guitars with tons of reverb, pounding programmed drums and wacky pitch-shifted vocals... Unending, meaningless pathological song titles... I think the band sounds fresh and some of the tunes are just really catchy. Cool stuff.
Autophagia is more traditional grind/gore. It's got real drums for one thing; It's a bit like Exulceration, a bit like Dead Infection... The sound is pretty obscure, guitars have a rather high sound, and vocals are distorted and pitch shifted. It's direct and basic, very gory and effective. Interesting stuff.
Feculent Goretomb is some more cool as hell Grind/Gore/Death, their sound is pretty sharp but still raw, thrashing guitars, tight and fast drumming. Reminds me of Flesh Grinder and early Dead Infection.
Ulcerrhoea: This is kick-ass grindcore from Germany; Ulcerrhoea is actually a socio-political band with pretty direct and basic message songs à la Agathocles. Their stuff is fucking killer, my favorite on this split release. Great riffs, fast-paced and well-structured songs, a good, powerful but still raw sound, shouts and screams but also a neat use of pitch-shifting vocal effects. Mmmhh.. Ulcerrhoea kicks butt! That's all I had to say for this one. Awesome split release! The backcover with all the band logos and the open skull actually looks better than the front... They should have just used that for the front.

Lymphatic Phlegm Tracks: 1)Intro: Gruesomely Induced to regurgitate 2)Empysema cadaverosum (Fermented cadaveric dissolution) 3)Spontaneous and spasmodic contraction of the muscle membranous ligaments of the esophagus 4)Inflamatory pyoderma gangrenosum in acquired immuno-deficiency syndrome 5)Excavating the Iliac Fossa (Haemorrhage) 8)Congenital malformation of the heart involving pulmonic stenosis 7)Acute segmental mesenteric vascular occlusion 8)Active edema of the lieum-caecum vermiform appendix 9)Mephitic emanation of malignant omphalitis 10)Chronic recurrent exacerbation in peptic ulcerative pancreatitis 11)Nephrological problems by degenerative lesions of the renal tubules
Autophagia "Putrid Remains of Decomposition" Tracks: 12)Facial disgust into excrements 13)Visceral regurgitation... through stoma 14)Pathological homoamputation 15)Purulent pollution of exzema 16)Hospital necrobiosis 17)Horrible excruciation of the neck 18)Coprophagical Dysenteria 19)Syphilis 20)Cencerous tumour metastasis 21)An orgy of flying limbs and gore (General Surgery)
Feculent Goretomb Tracks: 22)An alive chyme 23)Traumatic rupture of the diaphragm / Acute staphylococcal enterocolitis 24)Ileal fistula opening to the surface and lower intestine 25)Pathologic metal 26)Serious complications in maxilary tubercity reduction 27)Fatal primary tuberculosis in the infancy 28)Hyperplasia of pulmonary smooth muscles 29)Conective tissues reactions in malignant desease 30)A heap of anatomical remains 31)Necrophagous crisis cesced by gastro-anatomical frustrations 32)Influence of chemical substances in secretion from the colon 33)Hyperparathryoidism showing the opacities of calculum deposited in medulary
Ulcerrhoea Tracks: 34)Righteous assholes 35)Human mass product 36)Amputated 37)Cicle of lunacy 38)Squeezed cephalous 39)Too dumb to shoot 40)Suspicious respect 41)Grinding commercial bastards 42)...And another system failed 44)Social casualties 45)Concrete world

FECULENT GORETOMB/DIE HUMAN RACE/DYSMENORRHEIC HEMORRHAGE 3 way Split Cd

(Vomitorium)
Release date:
2002

Review:
Feculent Goretomb: Tight and kick-ass patho Grind/Gore/Death as usual. I think this is either live or rehearsal material. The sound is quite clear nonetheless. This band has a raw power and quite good musical chemistry. Their stuff is fast-paced, catchy, unrelenting and very in-your-face. Aggressive gory gurgles and manic screams, thrashing riffs and tight speedy grinding drums. This stuff is really great, the band would kick ass with a nice and clearer studio recording though.
Die Human Race: Aggressive, raw and fucked up grind. Pretty fast, with blasting messy drumming, a bunch of pissed off growls, shouts and screams, noisy guitars. Lacks structure, but works best as noisecore maybe.
Dysmenorrheic Hemorrhage: Definitely the best thing on this split. That's perhaps the best D.H. recording I've heard. So... what can I say? That's total grindcore people! Great basic grindcore structures, a great bass-filled, fuzzy guitar sound, fucking catchy drum programming, it's got "the thing" that makes grindcore great... Maybe the crust influence? The simple and effective grind riffs? In any case DH kicks major ass! It's fucking intense and unrelenting. The vocals here are sickening gurgles as always, they don't blend in perfectly with the rest, but still they're really effective. If you miss the old Regurgitate, this should satisfy your needs... The D.H. side ends with Malignant Tumour, Napalm Death & Nyctophobic and wow! That stuff's just crushing.

FECULENT GORETOMB "Archives of advanced pathological states and hospital atrocities" Demo

Release date: 2000

Review:
...Excellent patho Grind/Gore/Death: very early Carcass of course and very Flesh Grinder without the boring parts. Their sound is raw but actually quite sharp and clear. Compositions are very fast-paced, the drummer handles himself very well, he is tight and pretty speedy; there are two vocal types here: pitch-shifted gory gurgles and Jeff Walker-like mid-high shrieks... Guitars are thrashy and intricate, and they have a raw and dirty feel to them. It's not perfect, but very well-composed and rich grind-gore. 6 really neat and warped grind-gore songs. catchy and never boring. Pathological grind-gore fans should eat this up!

Tracks: 1)Apical periodontal cyst 2)Gruesome infectious transfusion but a perfect metabolism with contaminated grumous sanguine tissue 3)Pathological metal 4)Obstructed menstrual activity 5)An alive human chyme 6)Uterine haemorrhage resultant from chronic vulvitis

INTUMESCENCE"Promo Tape '02"

Release date: 2002

Review:
Interesting Grind/Gore band from the Netherland. The first songs on the promo are from a demo, the sound is very blurry and rehearsal style. It's pretty cool grind but it's very hard to tell what's going on; the real good stuff was on side B where the sound quality is a bit clearer. The songs on the promo '02 are especially excellent, it's where the kick-ass "Intestinal Dead Meat regurgitator" Mp3 from Intumescence website (www.angelfire.com/band/intumescence) is taken from. That's savage Grind/Gore with a bass-ridden sound, guitars downtuned as hell, a pounding and heavy kind of drumming and sickening gurgling vocals. Kind of a cross-over Last Days of Humanity and old Malignant Tumour... A promising band, when they've got their good heavy sound production, they certainly kick ass.

SMOTHERED BROTHERS "Puppy Rocket" Cdr

Release date: 2002

Review:
So... Yeah! Top notch, groovy computerized Grind/Noise, not unlike Libido Airbag. That stuff's catchy, dirty and raw. Vocals are totally hysterical, screamy, saturated, gurgly gory at times too... Guitars sound extreme, thrashy and distorted and there's a cool bass sound on top of that too. The programmed drums sometimes are all over the place but overall they're very effective, especially effective on the groovy midtempo parts (the most Libido Airbag-incluenced parts). They make a great use of repetive samples (mostly porn) and they also throw in a few unconventional and bizarre total harsh noisecore parts. Smothered Brothers is like a more intense and raw version of Libido Airbag, they have their own chaotic sound. Downright sleazy and raw, the tracks are all fast-paced and catchy, really intense too... That stuff's just killer to me!

Tracks: 1)shortbus to sodom 2)two in the pink one in the stink 3)tamela's pissy pants 4)rectal croc 4000 6)throatclit

Release date:

Review:
That's crazy-ass grindcore/noisecore. Short, nervous and speedy, with blasting electronic drumming, loud and thrashing guitar riffs, pretty unusual samples (weird eletronic sounds, humorous samples and even drum n' bass stuff). Vocals are rage-filled shouts and screams. Overall, it very reminiscent of Sore Throat, Anal Cunt & Dismembered Fetus. Something hateful, pretty unconventional but straight to the point. Definitely worth checking out!

MEAT SHITS / CATATONIC EXISTENCE Split Cd

(Motel Hell Records?/Shipman Records)
Release date:
recorded in 96, released in 2002

Meatshits "Give Hate a Chance" Review: The stuff here dates back to 1996, but was only released recently. Anyway, so Meat Shits! There's both bad and really good crap here. The first part of the Meat Shits side is some kind of indus thrash-death metal Meat Shits material, with... cheesy keyboards and dull ultra-repetitive movie samples, sorry but I don't like this part. The rest of the tracks are top-notch grind/metal/noise, tight and kick-ass ultra short songs, direct and to the point. If the band was only composing stuff like that, I'd give this full marks but that's not the case. Anyway, then you've got the usual obsessive and dumb homophobia & sexism, sickening porn, and way too many movies samples. You know the deal.
Catatonic Existence "Elect me god and i'll kill you all" Review: That's a side-band by Meat Shits leader Robert Deathrage, and basicly it's like Meat Shits without the indus-death songs. Just killer grind/metal, low grunts, a bunch of blastbeats (programmed drumming I think), etc... It's great stuff. Still you've got the 1 minute intros for a few seconds worth of grind. It just lessens the impact in my mind, but well... It's still pretty good. That's about it. Not a masterpiece, but decent , obnoxious porn grind. (That cd's limited to 1000 copies...)

Meat Shits Tracks: 1)Forfeit your worthless Life 2)Forced to have sex 3)Selective inbreeding 4)Terror against gays 5)Worm-food 6)Burn the bitch (to a crisp) etc... (17 tracks)
Catatonic Existence Tracks: 1)Guy told me to 2)The last temptation etc... (7 tracks)

ANAL CUNT "Very rare Rehearsal from February 1989" Cd

(Shipman Records)
Release date:
2002

Review:
If you haven't guessed what this cd is all about from the very obscure title, let me help you out, it's a very rare Anal Cunt Rehearsal from February 1989. So, what you get here is grind-noise, wow! Good old Anal Cunt rehearsal style, "back when it was still fun" like Seth Putnam states in the liner notes of this cd. Intense, improvised grind-noise, really raw sound and people talking between the tracks. Sounds pretty fresh and noisy. This cd is a must-have for Anal Cunt fans, it goes without saying, and it's pretty good too.

GOREROTTED "Mutilated in Minutes" Cd

(Dead Again Records/Relapse Records)
Release date:
2002

Review:
I hadn't heard this in its original release... Now it has just been re-released by Dead Again & Relapse Records and given a brand new cover art and packaging by the great Tales from Uranus comic book artist... So, Gorerotted is from UK and they've been compared to Carcass alot, especially for that reason I think; Though personally, I found them to be closer musically to Cannibal Corpse, albeit from their finest period ("Tomb of the Mutilated")... It's fast-paced, gory and brutal death metal. The guitar work is solid and technical, the drumming is tight and catchy, there's a great sense of speed and intensity and their sound is sharp as well as heavy... Vocals are dual growls and manic mid-high screams (maybe the other thing that makes people compare them to Carcass). Lyrics are pretty gruesome and gory, again kinda like Cannibal Corpse. It's fine and exciting brutal death metal in my opinion... This release is just neat and enjoyable gory fun! Best death metal stuff in a long time too.

Tracks: 1)Hacksore 2)Bed 'em, Behead 'em 3)Stab me till I cum 4)Cut, gut, beaten, eaten 4)Corpse fucking art 6)Put your bits in a concrete mix 7)Mutilated in minutes, severed in seconds 8)Gagged, shagged, bodubagged 9)Severed, sawn and sold as porn
