BUTCHER ABC "Butchered at Birth Day" Cd

(Obliteration Records)
Release date:
2003
Running time: 13:15 (26:25 with bonus live tracks)

Review:
Here's the re-issue or "expanded version" if you will of Butcher ABC's 2003 Ep, "Butchered at Birth Day"... The cd is completed with 5 extra live tracks with slightly muddy but still listenable recording quality as well as a live movie (the complete 30 minute set from Obscene Fest 2004! Line up is strictly guitar/drums/vocals on these tracks but the band still delivers!). Regarding the original Ep itself, I'm still unclear wether this title is a tribute or a jab at Cannibal Corpse, either way I think it's all pretty funny and weird, the opening intro is clearly also a nod to "Meathook Sodomy", but the Cannibal Corpse really references stop there as Butcher ABC is a different thing altogether musically... This is heavy and energetic blood spattered death metal with bits of goregrind here and there, Dead, Necrony, General Surgery, Gruesome Stuff Relish and of course early Carcass (one of the riffs from the third track, "Morbider engel des todes" is straight from "Reek of Putrefaction") all spring to mind at one point or another... Cool memorable riffs, superb groove, perfectly balanced and composed songs, catchy midtempos, a mix of Carcass-type shrieking and growling... Butcher ABC is as removed as can be from Clotted Symmetric Sexual Organ (guitaritist/vocalist Naru's orginal band) musically, but this stuff is still delivered with the same kind of wild energy and insanity! Their debut full length cd is said not to be ready to be released before a long while but I for one am eagerly awaiting for it!

Tracks: 1)Hell awake 2)Dozen of dismembered torsos 3)Morbider engel des todes 4)Maximum rotting corpse 5)Butchered at birth day

CORPORAL RAID "Regressive Development " Cd

(Obliteration Records - ORCD 057)
Release date: 2005
Running time:
30:43

Review:
This album opens with a short crepitating, noisy intro and then bursts into full-on blasting and growling brutal death metal! I was expecting more of a goregrind sound from this italian band... And while Corporal Raid presents several characteristics of the genre such as relatively short songs and gurgling pitch shifted backing vocals, the largest bulk of the album has a definite brutal death metal vibe, of the Suffocation kind, complete with deep, guttural vocals, fast, thumping guitar riffs, even occasional pinched harmonics and stuff... Still, this band has a rawer, harsher and generally more grinding approach to the genre, a slightly schizophrenic mix of rigorous brutal death metal and more bestial goregrind which I think makes for a very interesting listen. The album degenerates into more straightforward grind at several points (like in the very last track) the band kind of manages to keep things fresh that way. Sound production is adequate, quite clear, sufficiently heavy and with enough distortion to give the whole album a nice crunch. Negligent Collateral Collapse or Dead Infection sometimes come to mind too. Distorted basslines, intense blastbeats and roaring vocal effects abound here and all in all this cd offers some pretty terrific, deranged, chaotic and aggressive moments with an actually pretty unique sound... The cd also ends one the the same note it starts: absolutely apocalyptic noise. Italy doesn't have that many bands to offer in the genre, but Corporal Raid is definitely one of the major one from there and are worth checking out.

CRYPTICUS "Dedicated to the Impure " Cd

(Razorback Records - RR34)
Release date: 2005
Running time:
28:44

Review:
Crypticus is a very apt name for a band with such a cryptic, obscure sound, really capturing a sort of gloomy sound that would come from beyond the grave... This is one of the strongest death metal albums I've heard in a long while: truly gripping songs that strain your brain with heavy and thick sound textures, deep, guttural and slightly liquid vocals (remiscent of Demilich), inspired guitar riffing worthy of Massacre or early Death... Song-writing is solid and often pretty mesmerizing, with beautiful and memorable guitar work that just flows perfectly wether it's dark and melodic or thrashing and destructive... This is at the same time fast, blasting, catchy but also with an awesome atmospheric horror vibe sometimes even enhanced by well-placed keyboard parts (really gives this an old school horror feel in the vein of Mario Bava's "Black Sunday" and stuff...) Unless I'm mistaken, I suspect the drumming to be programmed, but you probably won't notice it as it's all really seemless work, quite varied, dynamic and natural-sounding. On top of that, the cd layout is adorned with absolutely great lovecraftian tentacle artwork! An all around fantastic offering!

Tracks: 1)Death Toll (2:36) 2)Bonescraper (1:30) 3)Mortificus (2:18) 4)The Crypticult (1:21) 5)Cyclops Throne (2:16) 6)Splatterstorm (2:24) 7)Tales Of The Necrosopher (2:11) 8)Cadaverous Invaders (2:28) 9)Haunted Vomitorium (1:40) 10)Necroborg (2:01) 11)Cryptrap (3:44) 12)Echoes Of The Macabre (4:15)

FAECES ERUPTION/TUMOUR Split Cd

(Last House on the Right - HAUS 021)
Release date: 2005
Running time:
50:50

Review:
Split sewage goregrind carnage! Faeces Eruption is a dutch one-man act, and offers as many as 26 untitled tracks of highly energetic gurgling goregrind here... Filled to the brim with blastbeats, guitars and bass drowned in fuzz and distortion, inhuman gurgling growls... And even with mostly unrecognizable riffs, this stuff still manages to remain driving and catchy and all times, never falling into the noise category... The drums are pretty well programmed and diverse and a few short serial killer/gory intros to spice things a little... Just an awesome goregrind act doing a great job at walking in the steps of Last Days of Humanity!
Tumour from Netherland: perfect companion piece to Faeces Eruption! Another one-man act, with slightly muddier sound, drum machine blasts in your face, downtuned, thick, heavy and distorted guitars, watery, gurgling spewing vocals, just a whole lot of really fun and raw, splattery grind! Tons of intros too, I noticed one of them was actually used on Faces Eurption side as well!!! Two totally underground one-man goregrind bands released on one pro-done cd... Goregrind connaisseurs should dig this!

Tracks: Lots of them!
1 to 26: Faeces Eruption "No, Just Braindead"
27 to 62: Tumour "Another Head Taken"

OBSCENE EXTREME 2004 Dvd

(Obscene Productions- OBP 064)
Release date: 2005

Review:
New dvd for Obscene EXtreme 2004 here! A pretty colossal amount of bands and a gigantic festival... It seems to me the way the whole thing is filmed improved compared to last edition's dvd, it's shot from mostly two angles, either from a crowd point of view or from the stage, but you can clearly see what's going on... Sound is fair, sometimes harsh but listenable overall... There's a ton of material to go through these 2 Discs, so I'll just focus on what I personally consider being the highlights... Most of the brutal death metal bands on there weren't so familiar to me so it's hard for me to really get into them... Some of the bands that I got a kick on this dvd are:
A very reliable Birdflesh again giving a killer performance, well-spirited, good-humored, thrashing and grinding! Great fucking cover of SxOxB's "Vicious World" by the way!
Gronibard giving what is probably the dumbest and most hilarious performance here; band members are all in the nude, the singer wears a leopard jock at first but also ends up exhibitting his genitals at some point... Anyhow yeah, they also play their own brand of awesome and catchy porngrind! Perfectly at ease in a fest called Obscene! Their show is rounded off by a superb Gut "Cripple Bitch" cover! Great stuff...
Later German legend Blood gives a good but harsh performance... Then it's Extreme Noise Terror's turn, I don't think any original members are left in the band, but they seemed to play the older classic crust/grind material...
Pleasant stuff coming from Screaming Afterbirth, especially the opening Terrorizer cover which is a really cool touch I think...
As Extras you've got a whole bunch of stuff (check the contents details for more info) like an interview with Matt Harvey (Exhumed) about why they didn't play Obscene, I think... A really cool Macabre interview too, talking about serial killers, comparing the band to minstrels and stuff, haha!

The fun continues with more craziness on Disc 2, beginning like Warscars (which is basicly Gronibard with clothes on!!!), Antigama, Cliteater, Embalming Theatre, Gride, Rompeprop, Butcher ABC (apparently only a drum/guitar/vocalist line up here, raw but still pretty heavy), Uncurbed (killer crust-grind), Squash Bowels (with a rough sound drowned in distorted bass, but still pretty enjoyable)...
Although my favorite part of this whole dvd set has got to be General Surgery... With the guy from Birdflesh killing on drums... The band plays some of their new songs but also most of the songs from Necrology: always a total hit!!! Sound is raw-as-hell. The Necrology stuff is obviously the most recognizable and well... also the most enjoyable for me... Killer!
Great to see Le Scrawl on there too, a personal favorite band of mine for a long time... It's pretty awesome seeing them in live conditions... Without contest, the most "unusual" band present on the whole festival with their bland of ska and guttural, thrashing grind, the only band with a sax and keyboards too! hehe
That's about it; I'm forgetting tons of bands, but there's so much stuff to discover here, just see for yourself!

CRIPPLE BASTARDS "Desperately Insensitive" Cd

(Obscene Productions - OBP 064)
Release date: 2005

Running time: 54:44

Review:
Here's Obscene Productions re-release of this controversial italian band's latest full length album... The first differences compared to the original Necropolis release can be seen with the cd layout, which still presents itself as a huge unfolding poster but with pictures adjusted in different way... Some meaty extras can also be found in the end with tracks from a recording of the band's performance during Obscene Extreme 2003. The sound quality on these live tracks is excellent and the band is as raging as they've ever been... As for my review of the album itself, allow me to recycle the old write-up I had made about it... "Desperately Insensitive" sound like a new level for the band, and I also know the line-up has changed since the early years, but getting a little further into it, this is actually not that far away from the rest of Cripple Bastards discography. They still play the same, aggressive, furious grind/hardcore, but it all sounds tighter and more coherent than ever, with perhaps more arrangements and a refined sound production. If you don't know them, the Cripple Bastards play a schizophrenic mix of enraged hardcore and violent grindcore. Shouted vocals and typical hardcore/punk riffs are balanced with a speed-crazed approach and uncompromised musical brutality, growled and shrieked vocals, thrashing and grinding riffs... Nervous, turbulent songs with constant changes of pace but always a determined anger. I assume most of the material is new, though I also noticed a few new reprise of older/classic tunes like "Being ripped off" or "I hate her" (probably my 2 favorite Cripple Bastards songs ever)... The lyrics are quite opiniated, and with straightforward messages, but don't expect strictly politically correct topics, they often talk about touchy subject matter and the whole thing really reeks of nihilism and negativity! The album itself is a masterful excercise in unrestrained rage and violence all the same. It's a slicker presentation of Cripple Bastards but like I said, they're still totally faithful to their old self, this album is the most cohesive and well-defined release they ever did.

ISACAARUM "Shibari Kata And Other Practices" Cd

(Obscene Productions - OBP 065)
Release date: 2005

Running time: 33:03

Review:
Ok, so this is the weird czech band into S&M, whose pictures that always adorn Obscene Extreme flyers and dvd covers, etc... Musically I'd describe this as pounding Death Metal, with dual vocals (low roaring and screeching high shrieks, between Agathocles & Carcass), guitar riffage is very metal-oriented, somewhat close to late Kreator, but there's also an undeniable savage and grinding death metal flavor to it (kinda makes me think of Blood at times). Sound production is really crisp, clear but aggressive. Song-writing is fairly good, well-constructed and gripping stuff, fast-moving and highly listenable, only the drumming feels a little clunky on some of the "blast beat" parts... Otherwise, this is pretty fluid-sounding and diverse. The cd layout looks nice and clean, with band member pictures in silly S & M poses or something... The whole concept of the band and lyrics seems to be simply revolving around deviant porn and depravity, though most of this stuff is pretty unsexy, just not really my thing but it takes all kinds... All in all this is quality music but you really ought to be in a metal mood to get into this stuff, some of it even sounds kind of black metallish which really isn't my bag personally...

Tracks: 1)Spermivore (2:07) 2)Jizmasterpiss (2:40) 3)Buttsuck (2:17) 4)Hermaphrodite Anal Express (3:53) 5)Clitblaster (2:19) 6)Pussy Off-Road (3:02) 7)Homo Erected (2:31) 8)Shit Paintress (2:31) 9)Bukakke Bitchbombers (2:51) 10)Perineum Battlefield (3:12) 11)Blow Job Time Pt.2 (3:46) 12)Cummageddon Final Cuntdown (1:54)

THIRD DEGREE "Discomfort" Cd

(Selfmadegod Records - SMG 018)
Release date: 2005
Running time:
34:55

Review:
Third Degree is like the polish response to Nasum... Modern-style, slick, metallic grindcore with a truly heavy sound production. These songs are like very well-oiled machines, with really bold and thick riffage, a barrage of swift drumming/flawless blastbeats and enraged roaring vocals... This stuff's real tight, mostly blazing fast but often balanced with slower, heavier passages as well, even using cleaner vocals at times (I'm not so hot about these parts)... Lyrics are pretty run-of-the-mill, mildly political or social type of stuff, honestly not the band's strongest point... Other than that, the whole cd layout looks pretty nice and glossy. Personally I like my grindcore a little more crunchy and raw, but if you like cleaner grind in the vein of the more recent Napalm Death albums or even Groinchurn, chances are you'll dig Third Degree as well!

Tracks: 1)Let's Hail Satan (2:39) 2)Piggsy (2:40) 3)Everywhere And Nowhere (2:51) 4)Ojcze mój (3:03) 5)Pope Died Tonight (3:06) 6)Sick (1:26) 7)Why Are They Not Coming? HEWHOCORRUPTS "The Discographer " Cd

(Red Devil Records)
Release date: 2005
Running time:
64:56

Review:
Ultra-fast, technical and very metallic hardcore/grind, this band has pretty wild musical abilities, melding blistering, intricate guitar riffing, aggressive drumming (with tons of blastbeats), jazzy tapping basslines and high pitched snarly/screamy vocals... This made me think of a mixture of Yacopsae & Dillinger Escape Plan. This cd is actually a discography, gathering various recordings... This cd contains a few oddities; I must say I was pretty weirded out for instance when the band starts playing a Guns N' Roses "Welcome to the Jungle" cover version, I was expecting the band to break into a blastbeat session mid-song, but no, this is a straight-up, faithful rendering of the original!!! So yeah, these guys sure can play their instruments... And they're excellent at what they do, though I can't say I'm a huge fan of this particular type of metal, something about this stuff is really too screamy/oversaturated, too high frequency and it's bound to give me a headache. Still, people after something fast, raging and really technical at the same time, this cd delivers in this respect and Hewhocorrupts should satisfy your needs... And with 61 tracks in an hour, you should get your money's worth of power violence (or something to that effect).
