POLAR GRINDER Swedish Grindcore compilation LP

(Putrid Fitlth Conspiracy/Manufactured)
Release date:
2002

Review:
This is a stellar line-up of bands it makes a pretty damn cool compilation. The point of this compilation is to be 100 % swedish and 100% grindcore... Now, you probably know this already, but Sweden is one of the most reliable country in terms of great, fluid grindcore... Swedish grind is very often crust-oriented, comes with a big heavy sound production and a pretty decent amount of grinding speed and rage and you'll find all of these things here... I can't really tell how much of the stuff here is unreleased material but this Lp was highly enjoyable all the same, and the bands all kick alot of butt where their turn is up...
Nasum: Nasum is their usual self... Infallible, blazing grind, fast, tight and furious. Maybe it's just me, but the band sounds alot better on vinyl! Or maybe the songs are just really good... this sounds like some of the best Nasum stuff I've heard in a long while.
Assel: Intense, heavy and raw grindcore. There's a pronounced crustcore side to it, as well as a dirty and raw touch... Plus majorly pissed off and rather screamy vocals, fast guitar riffs, etc...
Sewn Shut: One of the heaviest bands on this comp. They're into blazing, menacing grindcore, with loud guitar riffs, tight and violent as fuck drumming, and a mix of low guttural roars and high shrieks... Definitely one of my faves on this Lp.
Birdflesh: I'm pretty sure I already knew all of the songs here but this band's always a funride. A real roller-coaster of thrashing grind, catchy riffs, pounding, fast drums and wacky, angry vocals...
Arsedestroyer: Arsedestroyer delivers 2 tracks of intense, chaotic grind/noisecore, larsen-driven guitars, ear-piercing screams, blasting drums. Hands down the wildest band of the bunch here... It's all about blistering noisy raw grindcore... Love this stuff.
Sayyadina: This is high caliber Grindcore/Crust, with a clean and good heavy sound, flawlessly handled instruments, all insane, angry, powerful and tight very much like Nasum, incredibly catchy stuff and with lots of original and varied parts as well...
Asterisk: Alright, that's the only band I didn't know beforehand on this Lp: they're into grind like everybody else here, although their thrashing riffs and the extremely guttural vocals make them sound a little bit more metal perhaps, or I don't know they might be just grindcore... Anyway, they're pretty frantic and raw, in a good way. There's also an original and unusual thing about their songs, with a few pretty strange riffs and out there song structures and stuff... Overall, a very interesting and intense band.
Regurgitate: These guys need no introduction; here you've got 2 slabs of really tight, thrashing and fast grind-gore, screamy and gurgling vocals, speed-crazed bludgeoning drums and heavy as hell riffs... Your run-of-the-mill Rgte effort then!
Gadget: And for the big finish, that's some more extremely catchy, heavy grindcore/crust/metal... perhaps with more progressive song structures than the rest of the bands. It's kick-ass intense screamy and angry grind all the same but I'm starting to feel like I'm all out of words... So... This is all around great stuff for sure, killer layout, etc, etc... Two thumbs up!

Tracks: NASUM: 1)Flames of the truth 2)Sticks and Stones 3)Dead Mirror ASSEL: 3)Lättjans Prins 5)Hoppa pa Sparet 6)Spark i Skallen SEWN SHUT: 7)Night of the Long Knifes 8)Hung by the Balls 9)Bring Forth the Killers BIRDFLESH: 10)The Rolling Massgrave 11)Arabian Psycho 12)Anal Misery ARSEDESTROYER: 13)untitled 14)Untitled SAYYADINA: 15)Swallow 16)All this fear ASTERISK: 17)Lego hair 18)Janick top 19)Babylon-e REGURGITATE: 20)Heroes of Assissination 21)Choke that piggy GADGET: 22)New era 23)Autumn

MINDFLAIR "Green Bakery" Cd

(Bones Brigade )
Release date:
2002
Running time : 27:06

Review:
This kicks quite alot of ass... Grindcore with a pronounced crust/hardcore side to it (mincecore if you will...), a crossover between Agathocles at their best ("Razor Sharp Daggers") and late Brutal Truth. These guys put alot of energy into their stuff and have the grindy chemistry thing working pretty well. The sound is loud and clear, you've got well-rounded tracks, catchy basic grind & crust riffs, punchy, fast & skilful drumming, furious screams and shouts... Excellent stuff overall. Although the band sometimes lack focus and seem to try progressive things à la Brutal Truth, but it doesn't really work here and in my humble opinion, they should just stick to grind, which they're very good at by the way.
Now, most of the lyrics have some kind of polite heartfelt social messages and stuff... Some of it comes off as pretty simplistic, corny, weird pot-head kind of stuff, the rest is just plain dumb, pointless and unintentionally hilarious (the song about... parking tickets (!!!) springs to mind... there's even a song about erm... being spontaneous and partying...) In the middle of all this, there's also an anti-abortion song, blah! I hate anti-abortion songs. I'm all for socio-political lyrics, some bands like Agathocles or Dropdead can sometimes write thought provoking things or at least provocative things, but most of the lyrics here are just really weird and with no point whatsoever.
Anyhow, it's still a very good grind album to me, for the most part extremely catchy, tight, crushing, aggressive and with a more than decent sound production... Recommended then.

Tracks: 1)No ideas 2)Pampered grumbler 3)Garbage 4)Only for yourself 5)Conditioned life 6)Political self service 7)No reason, no fun 8)Puberty conditioned murder career 9)Green bakery 10)Ticket terror 11)Despite of existence 12)Blurred personality 13)Kuehle frische milch 14)Sparetime sheriffs 15)Fashion destitude

VAGINAL CARNAGE "Dildo Detention" Mcd

(No Escape Records)
Release date:
2002

Review:
Here we have a mixture of slick brutal death metal and stomach-turning grind/gore; Think of something kinda like Morbid Savouring with a touch of Mucupurulent (from "Sicko Babe"). They've got a really clear sound, neatly composed tracks, sharp musicianship, splattery gurgling & growling vocals, raspy throaty backing vocals, tranchant and thrashing guitar riffs, a nice sense of speed and aggression... Overall, songs have a pretty metallic structure but they keep things catchy, intense & fast... It has an effective impact and a really sleazy vibe. You've also got a bunch of nicely picked up intros, either perverse or humourous, sometimes both and songs written about filth, piss and shit mostly. Overall, this is a really engaging release, that delivers on almost every aspects and remains alot of fun after many repeated listenings. I say people should definitely check this one out...

Tracks: 1)Gang bang business man 2)Baby crusher 3)Chaps with flaps 4)On the brasko 5)Brutal sensation 6)My nuts are nuggets 7)Is this ya slut 8)Dildo detention 9)Slab of sluts 10)Mad mullet cunts 11)Shit in my mouth

CATASEXUAL URGE MOTIVATION "Nekronicle" Cd

(Razorback Records - RR15)
Release date:
2002
Running time: 70:36

Review:
Catasexual Urge Motivation is definitely one of the most remarkable and unique grind band of the 90's. Their style is truly singular, with a terrifying, cold and menacing feel mixing perfectly with their fascination for serial-killing (displayed in their lyrics and imagery, a lot). There's a whole raw, dirty feel that seems inspired most importantly by Impetigo and Autopsy, often with painfully slow, doomy parts leading to ultra-violent, ultra-fast grindcore climax. Their blast-beats have an industrial, dehumanized feel and often reach unnatural speeds, as well as occasionally experimenting with near-techno beats or catchy, unconventional rythms. Another C.U.M. trade-mark is the sickening vocals, the utterly repugnant spattery gurgles intertwined with the deep, guttural grunts and moans, again delivered in a intensely repulsive, perverse and gross sexual sexual manner. C.U.M. is truly a catalyst for violent sexual and bestial murderous impulses, transcribed into grindcore terms; it's catchy and effective but there's also an ever present disturbing, oppressive ambiance, definitely something unmatched in sickness. This collection of the almost complete C.U.M. discography is a great idea, from the amazing "Rape Trauma Syndrome" demo to the Split Tape w/ Goropsy and compilation material, everything here is must-hear material. Wether you've already got some of these CUM releases or not, getting to hear them on cd is a mind-blowing experience. Plus, you've got 2 previously unreleased bonus tracks and great liner notes by the band. The giallo-inspired artwork is excellent as are the neat serial-killer-style newspaper clippings (cool idea) and small original cover-art reproductions... In short, this is a must-have. Hope Vampric Motives will rise again.

FAST FORWARD/JET JAGUAR KR3 KILL SPREE Split 10" Lp (cool-looking violet vinyl)

(Lofi or Die Records - LOD002)
Release date:
2002

Fast Forward Review:
This side starts off with a pure noise track, nothing but noise, just a sea of noise. Electronic, brutish, pounding, blipping maelstrom of raw harshness. Following tracks mix the noise with strong elements of violent gabber/hardcore-techno. They do some pretty catchy things with abrupt techno beats. Speed, sound-saturation and various weird repetitive samples mingled together. Result is quite nightmarish, intense and brutally rythmic noise goodness.
Jet Jaguar KR3 Kill Spree Review: Jet Jaguar delves into even more extremely weird territories than Fast Forward. Sounds abrasive, distorted, almost non-sensical; "structured" around fast-paced and disarticulated, messy beats... The sound texture here is really bizarre; an assortment of strange disincarnated movie samples, ringing sounds, crude, absurd melodies forming a big unreal sonorous chaos. You've got some vocals too, saturated, manic and hysterical shrieks, that sound slightly faded in the background. Expect something pretty schizophrenic, truly non-conventional. Makes a very nice, headache-inducing Split Lp.

Fast Forward Tracks: 1)House Uv Noise (sweet home mix) 2)Unda Deztruxion 3)Slow Down (ralenti verzion) 4)Unsafe Haven 5)Death 2 Blakmetal

Jet Jaguar KR3 Kill Spree Tracks: 1)Sipping tea on a sunday morning 2)Angels kill christmas dead 3)King Koopa 4)By the time the larva was removed from Charlie'as arm it was nearly an inch long 5)Jacko and the gigantic jolly green dopamine machine 6)Avail the steamkiller 7)Bruce Wayne wears a wifebeater 8)Explosion in the meth lab 9)SCUMBUCKETRON 10)Musashi's Chaingun Opera

CAUSE FOR EFFECT "album" Cd

(Bucho Discos)
Release date:
2002

Review:
This is really good, basic Grind/Jazz. It keeps the expedicious energy of grind and mixes it with a little jazzy technicity and fluidity. The song structures are all about simplicity and effective conciseness, but the complex bass work & the intricate drumming give the songs some real depth. Like the cover design implies, their style is very mathemathical and retained, without truly wild grind effusions and such... Though the drumming is quite fast, tight, speedy and blasting, it's also very diversified, with countless changes of pace and rythm per song... but it always keeps a strict, calculated pattern. The bass line is also very swift and diversified and pretty technical. The guttural grunt-roaring vocals are perhaps the wildest part of all. This keeps a genuine grindcore simplicity and remains fresh unlike some technical hardcore/grind bands that compose loud, over-complex and over-technical songs and become indigest because of it. Cause For Effect style has much in common with another band called Scrawl; except CFE doesn't rely on instruments other than bass and drums and come off with more of a dry sound. If you're after different and original grindcore, flawlessly executed, this is great.

Tracks: 1)skulled 2)proto motor 3)absolute mute 4)nature future 5)the spirit of a new industrialism 6)speculation of mutilation 7)slow mind 8)sausage background 9)not local 10)mordorous flavor open 11)global 12)robot 13)saborator 14)pro - logic 15)custom gauge 16)edgar turbo 17)eco contact 18)pulver 19)a-ang 20)nullsoft disk writer plug-in 21)audio/2000 23)torsolike 24)max acceleration 25)stiff suspension 26)troubleshooting 27)pa-tu 28)every day is more pathological 29)of corpse 30)rallist 31)jaa-a 32)05:30 34)autobulb 35)c. noctus 36)timeless wisdom 37)promising material 38)control doctor 39)aktivator 40)fast fusion 41)acoustic rubicon 42)hermetic vision

NUNWHORE COMMANDO 666 "World Whore III" Mcd

(Stuhlgang Records)
Release date:
2002

Review:
As you may know, this is a project composed of, among others, Olli (Libido Airbag member & ex-Gut member). As usual, the imagery is obviously shocking and striking, mixing war & porn & violence & humour; the noise here is clearly cyber-grind in the vein of Libidio Airbag, only perhaps a bit more destructive, intense, industrial than Libido; as well as less funny and weird. Tracks are all tight, fast and grinding, straightforward with alot of pissed off war-oriented samples. This stuff's really insane and high quality cyber-grind stuff. Pounding, mid-tempo and occasionally speed-crazed, blasting electronic drum-machine, a great guitar and bass sound filled with gorgeous distortion, highly effective vocals coming as a mixture of sickening effect-ridden, watery, splattery gurgles, natural gurgles, high-pitched manic shrieks. This stuff is really catchy, with some very tight midtempos, alot of bizarre groove and raw grindy goodness, innovative industrial touches and some parts that are even pretty close to drum n' bass. Their sound is however highly depraved, twisted, sleazy and dirty; with a real raw mid-tempo grind edge. The stuff here is more than a few times highly reminiscent of Gut, especially on the reprise of "Consequence" (originally by Ulcerous Phlegm) That'll clearly bring back Gut fans alot of good memories. Overall, a very consistant band, in the same league as Libido Airbag, if not better.
This cd is composed of 8 tracks; the bonus tracks are the same ep, only in reverse mode!

Tracks: 1)Intro 2)My Werner Weights a Ton 3)Bibleburning Bukkake Blaster 4)666 Goatfuck Boomerang 5)World Whore III 6)Nailbomb Twister 7)Consequence 8)Unholy Atomic Whore Disaster

MENTAL FUNERAL Issue #4

Release date: 2002

Review:
A great new issue of one of the best zine out there. This issue seemed alot thicker than the past ones to me. The layout is hysterical; messy, all over the place, filled with old grindcore, gore & death/black metal flyers, sleazy comic books illustrations and gore movies stills... You've got tons of reviews of all sorts underground metal, grind, death, noise & black metal records and zines and stuff, the reviews always come with a brutally honest opinion... You've also got reviews of really obscure and weird horror flicks including one cool report of a Cannibal Holocaust screening (it doesn't focus on the movie, but more on the screening itself which is fun). The meat of the zine is the interviews though, with great discussions with County Medical Examiners, Black Army Jackets, Sickness, Mixomatosis (<<<one of the greatest 'what's the fuck?' interview I've ever read), Vomit Spawn, Tales From Uranus, The Earwigs and some more... Great, sleazy, chaotic zine filled with alot of fun facts to know and tell.

GRUESOME MALADY Promo Cdr

Release date: 2002

Review:
What we've got here is pounding gore-grind-death, with a bizarre edge, guitars are constantly thrashing with occasional creepy high-pitched notes, vocals are gurgled and processed through all sorts of weird-ass effects. It's pretty chaotic but coherent, strongly reminiscent of Carcass from "Reek of Putrefaction" and Exit 13 from "Don't Spare the Green Love". The songs are intersected with quite well-picked and disgusting movie samples and splattery sound effects. This stuff is definitely refreshing, their sound is raw and original. Not blazing fast, more like, pounding and catchy. A nice little repugnant band. They come from India, the band's formed by Conflicting Theories members and they already got a full length album planned on Bizarre Leprous. So watch out!
(If you're wondering, I did the Fulci-inspired cover art on the promo, I'm also doing the art for their upcoming album and maybe a t-shirt.)

Tracks: 1)Malodorous Ejaculation 2)Molesting the Disembowelled 3)Ingest the Excrement

GORELAND Cd

(Black Hole Productions - BHP 006)
Release date:
2002

Review:
This, is a compilation about gore-grind. First thing, amazing artwork! The whole cd cover is very neatly designed and filled with graphics by Jake (Tales from Uranus), it just looks killer. There's also a little text, kind of a explanatory bit about gore-grind! Pretty fun. This compilation showcases some of the most apalling bands in history but it's nonetheless tastefully layed out and presented! So, well there's a ton of bands here, all grinding in various ways, all pretty insane and stuff... you can't go wrong with this cd, I'm sure you'll discover a few things you didn't know and have fun with the whole thing. My own personal favorite has to be Noisecore Freak, it's the less gore-oriented thing on this cd but by far the most original one, in a extremely effective industrial noise-core vein - a cool discovery for me. Other favorites of mine are Lymphatic Phlegm, Microphallus, Butcher ABC, Luteous, Pigsty, Dysmenorrheic Hemorrhage... But yeah, there's more! The whole thing is a great listen from start to finish. You've also got big guns like The County Medical Examiners, Last Days of Humanity, Regurgitate, Rompeprop, Gruesome Stuff Relish Haemorrhage, Ghoul but they need no introduction I guess, they're always fun and clearly the ones with the better sound production. I'm not certain how much is unheard material, but I know for sure that at least my Blue Holocaust track is exclusive to this comp. So, here you go! One great compilation to boost, very representative of the actual gore scene, genius artwork, tons of bands & a great running time. What more can you ask for?

Tracks: 1)Lymphatic Phlegm "Chronic Necphrolithiasis Followed by Perinephritic Suppuration" 2)Decomposing Serenity "Bubbles of Blood" 3)Microphallus "Evelyn Corbin (Victim # 10) 4)The County Medical Examiners "Vitreous Humor" 5)Feculent Goretomb "Chronic Evacuation of Semi-Disgested Aliments" 6)Oxidised Razor "Anal Carnage" 7)Last Days of Humanity "Suppurated Sublimisation" 8)Autophagia "Syringa Necrose Your Cerebral with Psychopharmaka" 9)Blue Holocaust "The Fifth Cord" 10)Cativeiro "The Great Hidden Power of a Decaying Torso" 11)Regurgitate "Goregeous Epithelioma" 12)Disgorge (Mex) "Excremential Lust" 13)Rompeprop "Dislocated Purple Stoma" 14)Pigsty "Deviant in your Bath" 15)Gruesome Stuff Relish "El Duce Inn Massacre" 16)Reek of Shits "The Oversalted Menses" 17)Haemorrhage " Obnoxious (Surgeon of the Dead)" 18)Mincing Fury and Guttural Clamour of the Queer Decay "Confinement" 19)Butcher ABC "Dozen of Dismembered Torsos" 20)Ghoul "Ghoulhunter" 21)Grossmember "Mind Collapse System" 22)Luteous "Grinding Flesh" 23)Noisecore Freak "Harsh Bedwire" 24)Dysmenorrheic Hemorrhage "Delicate Punctured Organ" 25)Amoebic Dysentery "Masturbatory Mastication" 26)Gross "Bred by the Dead" 27)Spineless "Ode to Gore (Part 4)" 28)Meatknife "Fingered and Fistfucked" 29)Fuck the Facts "The Burning Side"
