HUTT "Sessão Descarrego" Cd

(2+2=5 - 2+2=16)
Release date:
2004
Running time: 30:51

Review:
Hutt comes from Brazil and plays nifty grind with a violent and modern edge to it, it pretty much reminds me of Abstain or Nasum, totally fast-paced and blasting but not without its fair share of groove... Compositions are mostly based around blazing speed, with lots of breakdowns and a kind of restless, unrelenting, nervous vibe... Vocals really take the foremost place here with tons and tons of roaring dual raspy grunting/high shrieking assaults... Just angry shouting matches all over the place... Surging, grinding guitar riffs, furious drumming... This is very intense stuff for sure, it really kills... Sound production is quite nice and clear, but with a slightly abrasive penchant, in a treble-heavy way... Lyrics are in portugese so I can't really comment on those... But the cd booklet is filled with cool horror comic style graphics and the front cover is also quite lovely (featuring the unmistakable machete zombie from Dawn of the Dead!) Overall, I'd say this is a very well-crated cd and some mighty fine, highly energetic grindcore, definitely worthy of attention!

MAGGUT "Into the Gore" Cd

(Bloodbath Records - BIMI044)
Release date:
2004
Running time: 20:15

Review:
This is the spanking new debut cd of this first rate japanese goregrind band... It starts with a "Genital Grinder" style introductive part... yes you've guessed right: it's "Reek of Putrefaction" all over again! Maggut delivers exactly what you'd expect from them... Straightforward, basic, savage gory grind, 20 minutes of pure unadulterated fun. Mean, ironfisted grinding riffs, thick downtuned guitar sound and infamous pitch-shifted gurgling growls; That's what it's all about... Sound production is super clean and heavy, it sounds fucking awesome, vocals are perhaps a tad too loud in the mix but it's nothing too distracting, because this stuff rips! The main inspiration here is most definitely early Regurgitate, but songs are also tinted with quite a few bits and pieces of General Surgery, Gruesome Stuff Relish (& maybe even a slight touch of Gore Beyond Necropsy)... This cd is certainly not the most original, tightest or most perfect ever, but it's so freaking enjoyable... just a simple pleasure! Exciting, fresh goregrind bands like Maggut don't grow up on trees so get this cd and treasure it!

GARBAGE GUTS Cdr (Promo)

Release date: 2004

Review:
Garbage Guts comes from Australia and plays some damn fine Goregrind. I'm basing this review on unreleased demo recordings deemed too rough for a proper release... This stuff is indeed quite raw but nonetheless, it sounds amazing to me, quite simply some of the best splatter gore grind I've heard in recent years. Incredibly catchy, wild, nasty & uncompromising... The use of vocal effects is systematic here in a manner similar to Last Days of Humanity but in my opinion slightly more dynamic and textured (less blunt). Guitar riffing is thrashing and incisive, with a great, crunchy sound, bass also has one of those cool-as-hell distorted sound, drumming is tight, sharp and often reaching very high speeds... all the right elements are here, though what makes this band ahead of most others in the genre is their composing skills... Songs are all really neatly written and memorable, cutting straight to the essential, with captivating rhythms, dense riffing... The ultrafast blastings and thrashing midtempos remind me of early Brutal Truth ("Extreme Conditions...") but done in a much more basic and expeditive way, closer to mid 90's Regurgitate. Judging from this demo and some additional live material, clearly Garbage Guts has alot of potential... A better demo is in the works and an album is possibly in the plans... Everyone should definitely look out for this band!

Tracks: 1)Leprotic Foetal Frenzy 2)From the Groins of a Pained Humanity 3)Scrambled Remains 4)Addicted to Open Graves 5)Eat Shit! 6)Let It Mature (live) 7)Mining the Arsehole

FONDLECORPSE "Limbless" 7" Ep

(Oakking Records - OAK003)
Release date: 2004

Review:
First thing: superb cover art by Jake (Tales From Uranus)! Definitely one of his most striking art ever! So, what's to say about this Fondlecorpse full ep... 6 tracks, top notch, basic and fast old school death metal! Here's the run-down on this band: Guttural growling vocals which kind of reminds me of Massacre on "From Beyond" especially because of those effective dual growling/shrieking parts... A pretty seemless drum machine provides some very catchy rhythms and crushing blasts; Finally, you've got some nice, memorable riffs in a totally old school death metal vein... Thrashing, dynamic and straightforward, not without a slight melodic vibe, well-thought out riffing and even a few well-placed solo's... Sound production is clear and well-balanced, with a nice prominent bass sound. Lay out and packaging is terrific, filled with neat horror-related jokes and stuff... Included is a cool looking lyrics sheet too... Lyrics mostly deal with pretty nasty shit in the spirit of the cover art, except for the first track which is written in a much cheesier and adorable creature feature style (perhaps because Billy & Jill of Razorback co-wrote the lyrics on this one!) - Overall, definitely a very solid Ep, get it if you can!

Tracks: Side Globster: 1)Into the Boglin Marshes 2)Forced Paradental Degeneration 3)Fucked Stabbed and Eaten
Side Snish: 4)Impregnating the Comatose 5)Limbless 6)Dead Thru Feedingtube

LORD GORE "Resickened" Cd

(Razorback Records - RR31)
Release date: 2003

Running time: 51:10

Review:
"Resickened" is such of an utterly satisfying experience it almost brings tears to my eyes... Safe to say this one truly delivers the goods... Fresh, ingenious song-writing, outright vile musical vibe, crisp sound production, just about everything about this album gels perfectly. Guitar riffs are quite basic but inscribed inside some really inventive song structuring, well-thought out song progression... Songs are really juicy and often take unexpected turns, every now and then throwing in some incredibly twisted guitar solo's processed through weird filters and stuff... There's an obvious attempt at turning this record into sheer hysterical madness, slimy sonorous lunacy... Song-writing is simply solid, implacable thrashing, heavy riffs, a pinch of macabre melody... This stuff is intricate and rich enough to make for immensely enjoyable repeated listenings... For the rest, I love the distorted bass sound and the awesome, thick drum tone... Drumming-wise, this is really tight with some really effective, catchy rhythms, loads of doublebass pounding, pretty fast stuff overall, but also mid-paced when it's appropriate, never over-indulging in hyperspeed; And obviously, you've got Lord Gore's almost defining viscous, slick, liquid, nauseous vocals, giving the band's music a very large chunk of its depth; retching grunts and growls, slippery squeals and various other splattery vocal chord tortures... No vocal effects are used so it really gives this stuff a special organic feel... As usual, you can discern a huge amount of influences peaking through the songs, Lord Gore seems to have a very referential composing approach, quite similar to Engorged; it'd be really fastidious citing them all, but the ones that spring to mind the most are Pungent Stench (in general), Impetigo (neat song-writing), Terrorizer (grinding rage), Autopsy (doom side) & Gut (sickening vocals & slight G.G. Allin-type punk feel), a few riffs even made me think of Bolt Thrower... I'd say the greatest elements of "The Autophagous Orgy" are really expanded on with much more punch, a better sense of rhythm, structure, progression and a generally catchier musical environment... A clever and dynamic use of intro samples and some exquisitely mean-spirited lyrical themes manage to elevate the album even higher... Packaging-wise, this is also a masterpiece, magnificent artwork, slick layout and this time around the complete lyrics printed inside the booklet... What more can you ask? This is beautiful, beautiful work... This album simply feels like a giant gore/death metal orgasm! Get it!

ZOMBIE RITUAL "Night of the Zombie Party" Cd

(Razorback Records - RR30)
Release date: 2003

Running time: 41:00

Review:
This is one of the most addictive cd I've heard in a long long time. Basicly, Zombie Ritual is total old school death metal worship, inspired by early Grave in a major way, but with a refreshing sense of humor and some really wild, thrashing energy added... Of course, the japanese touch is there too, this stuff has some amazing intensity that totally reminds me of early SxOxB! Anyway, all the tunes here are really infectious, with insanely catchy rhythms, memorable riffs, heaviness from beyond the grave, gorgeous, basic guitar solo's, haunting vocals (guttural growling and cool backing raspy shrieking)... And I'd even say some of these songs are truly unforgettable hits! I can't get some of these tunes outta my head, everytime I think "Zombified! Zombified!" I have the urge to play this cd again! My 2 favorite tracks have to be "Zombified" & "Zombie Party": I love the part in the latter song where a little kiddie starts singing along with the chorus: "Zombie Party!"... Purely hilarious! Humor is definitely key here... I mean... Each track has the word "Zombie" in the title! But musically, it's also a very serious and accomplished death metal effort, musicianship is really brilliant, songs have a great flow and their fair share of flawless melodies... The album maybe lacks a little diversity after a while, but that's Grave-style death metal for you! I'll just say "Night of the Zombie Party" is simply a must-have to me... Sound production is splendid to my ears, cover layout is terrific, with some of "Tales from Uranus" Jake's best art yet... The pictures of the band members in Dawn of the Dead-style blue zombie postures is a real hoot too! All the lyrics are printed, most of it is in japanese except for a few lines of chorus in english (which also brought back to my mind SxOxB's first LP's)... I guess that's about it... I think I'm going to play this again right now.

Tracks: 1)Zombie Ritual (4:28) 2)Zombie Fire (2:41) 3)Zombiefied (4:30) 4) Zom-Beer (2:34) 5)Zombies Devour You Alive (4:07) 6)Brains For Zombies (1:37) 7)Zombie Axe Massacre (3:50) 8)Zombie Party (3:48) 9)Zombie Drive (3:27) 10)Zombie Legions Kill! Kill! (2:35) 11)Die Zombie Die (4:54) 12)Zombie Metal War (2:29)

MACHETAZO "The Maggot Sessions " Mcd

(Living Dead Society - LDS 001)
Release date: 2003

Running time: 14:41

Review:
This is the cd version of the same Machetazo Ep... This one doesn't contain any new song per se (with the exception of a Venom "Black Metal" cover), these are still very interesting, oh so good, raw versions of "Trono de Huesos" & "Carne de Cementerio" material; slightly differently arranged (added intros, etc...), and with a more prominent bass sound than usual... If you live in a hole and don't know Machetazo, they play a cross of old school death metal and old school grindcore, and they play it right too! Purely rough and uncompromising, with mean, thrashing guitar riffs, nasty abrasive vocals, punishing drumming, simply one of the finest bands around... This release also has some striking cover art by Dennis Dread mixing Iron Maiden "Number of the Beast", a maggoty Lucio Fulci face & the gasmask-wearing Machetazo members hanging by their own guts... The whole layout on this one is really killer... I guess it's more destined to Machetazo completists... But this is still genius spanish grind with an extra crunchy sound (killer sound!) and an extremely well-packaged cd... Definitely a worthwhile addition to any collection in my opinion! It's the first release of Living Dead Society from Spain which sounds like a very promising label! Watch out for them... http://www.livingdeadsociety.com

TOTAL FUCKING DESTRUCTION "In for the Kill " Cd

(Bones Brigade Records - BB 022)
Release date: 2003

Running time: 62:52

Review:
Here's a nice collection of everything by Total Fucking Destruction, the band of ex-Brutal Truth drummer Rich Hoak... This project of his sounds... well actually it sounds alot like late Brutal Truth, very much in the lines of "Kill Trend Suicide" and "Sounds of the Animal Kingdom" (especially in terms of drumming, obviously)... It might be slightly more minimalist but still in a similar vein: raw, slightly lofi vibe, guitars with loads of distortion, jazzy bass lines, out of whack vocals, energetic compositions, something weird and wild at the same time. Naked City and Exit 13 occasionally springs to mind too. I must say this stuff is a lot of fun to listen to, the incredible intensity of the whole thing and the almost upbeat thrashing riffs always get to me... Regarding vocals, we've got pissed off saturated midrange shouts and screams with a punk feel, mixed with lower grunts... Some very eccentric lyrics and imagery... I must say this is some of the most offbeat stuff I've heard in a while; so if you're looking for originality, definitely go for Total Fucking Destruction... This cd contains 3 demos and some live recordings, overall a very worthwhile collection cd!

INHUME "In for the Kill " Cd

(Osmose Productions)
Release date: 2003

Running time: 31:52

Review:
This actually came out more than a year ago, but better late than never... If you don't know them, Netherland's Inhume is the archetype of relentless grind/death brutality, fueled by a mix of Terrorizer and hyperspeed death metal influences, expelled with implacable force and a huge, fucking heavy sound production. This album just picks up where the last one left off; with its whirlwind of fierce, supertight blastbeats, doublebass pounding, bad-ass riffing and dual growling vocals... Overall this is a really intense, smooth ride of a grinding album... Actually it almost sounds like it's on autopilot at times... But heh, that's nitpicking, I absolutely adore this cd... If you want something truly effective, heavy and that will flawlessly blast your face off on each track, "In for the Kill" is the thing you need... I can't say I'm a fan of their new label, in fact this is the first Osmose release I ever reviewed in these pages, but this cd is more than worthwhile and obviously comes highly recommended!

Tracks: 1)Incineration Of The Body By Own Will (2:03) 2)Process To Decelerate (2:06) 3)Inhume (3:05) 4)Genetic Intervention (1:18) 5)Prelude To Human Confinement (0:42) 6)Scourging (1:57) 7)In For The Kill (2:11)8)Decimated Content (2:37) 9)Ignorance Of The Elevated (2:22) 10)Bitch Redecoration (1:39) 11)Bowel Movement (1:52) 12)Profound Presumption (0:28) 13)Fucked With Paranoia (1:45) 14)Blood Orgy At 7th Street (2:31) 15)Sodomizing Encounter (2:54) 16)Retreat From Morality (2:22)

OBSCENE EXTREME 2003 The Dvd - Double Dvd Set - Ntsc Zone 0

(Obscene Productions - OBP 058)
Release date: 2004
Running time:
219 Minutes/106 Songs

Review: Here's a really packed dvd divided in 2 discs, one for each day in the fest... Tons and tons of bands here; strictly grind, gore and brutal death metal too! In general, you've got 2 or 3 songs per band... Sound is pretty good, video looks fine too, it's quite well shot with only one camera I think... And well, this is just quite simply insane stuff... I've never seen anything like that on dvd before! I don't have the time to review all the bands so I'll just scan through some of my favorite performances in order of appearance; let's see... Malignant Tumour gives a very energic set in their own mince-crust style, Cerebral Turbulency deserves the price for the wackiest performance, crazy stuff! Denak is also one of the best bands on this dvd, fucking killer, undiluted grindcore, very intense performance! Dead Infection... Well they're always great! Real heavy and grinding shit! Some more bands I really liked here are Ingrowing, F.U.B.A.R., Negligent Collateral Collapse, Neuropathia (dressed as butchers!)... And the best for last... Inhumate of course giving one of the wildest performances here, complete with skull-crushing microphones, crazy stage diving and everything... Still, Cripple Bastards is in my opinion the band that has the most violent impact in the whole thing, great charisma, direct, in-your-face grind-hardcore, one hell of a great live band! Next comes Inhume, really tight show, terrific, bombastic, with dual vocalists and everything... And Macabre, definitely one of the finest bands here from a musical point of view... Well that's about it, there's alot of more excellent bands on here but I'd like to keep this short... Overall, a really superbly crafted dvd set, very highly recommended!
