WTN "Rotting in Pestilence"

(Razorback Records)
Release date:
2004

Review:
This singaporean band is relatively unknown to the scene, but they have been putting out split vinyl releases for a few years now, most notably with Squash Bowels, Morgue & Ulcerrhoea, all of which... I unfortunately haven't heard personally... Still, "Rotting in Pestilence" is already announced as their one and only album, ever... If that's the real case, then this is assuredly a superb, thrashing, grinding and gore-soaked swansong! The album opens with an instrumental introduction in the tradition of "Genital Grinder" (Carcass) & "Ominous Lamentation" (General Surgery)... Then musical slaughter ensues... If I had to compare WTN to another modern grind band, I'd say Machetazo because of their similarly gritty sound, heavy and raw at the same time. WTN definitely have their own distinctive style though of course; this is grind-gore delivered in a basic, effective way, but still with some real personality, edge and complexity to it; Most of the songs are purely infectious, churning grind with speed, gore-gurgling vocals, thrashing guitars, crushing drumming & blistering bass sound as main key elements; however WTN clearly tried to give their songs more layers and cooked up some very neat song arrangements too, often eerily/morbidly melodic... "Symphonies of Sickness" by Carcass often springs to mind in that respect... the album also retains the sheer simplicity and coolness of something like Impetigo's "Horror of the Zombies" too, especially for the directness of it all and the blend of horror movie samples and atmosphere with the music. Oh, and let this be the last reference, on many occasions, WTN's musical impact and stomach-turning abilities also reminded me of Haemorrhage on "Emetic Cult". More regarding the vocals: they are mostly very pronounced grunt-roar/growls underlined by fewer squeaky shrieks and hardly any vocal effects (at all?), lower, guttural, Bill Steer/Stevo(Horror of the Zombie) style vocals are my personal favorites so I think the vocal choice was very wise (an example to follow really). One of the many highpoints of this album is the cover version of Impetigo's hommage to Nekromantik "I Work for the Street Cleaner", a very entertaining rendition of one of the most accomplished Impetigo songs, and Impetigo guitarist Mark even plays guitar for it! This is packaged in gorgeous horror comic-book style artwork by Nor (Machetazo's "Trono de Huesos") and the booklet contains the lyrics too. This is not a perfect album but still some impressive and clearly passionate composition work that will surely fascinate many a grind-gore freak. My favorite songs are probably the great opening "Rotting in Pestilence" and the fantastic closing song "Into the light with blood", some really striking and memorable riffs in there. Simply unmissable!

Tracks: 1)Rotting in pestilence 2)Coroners macabre fleshfeast 3)Flesh ripping torment 4)Behind closed doors 5)Toetags and bodybags 6)Posthumous revulsions 7)House of necrophilia 8)Embryonic chronic mutations 9)Village of the damned 10)Eye for pathology 11)Excav-eaters in the graves 12)Laughter from the morgue 13)I work for the streetcleaner (Impetigo cover w/Mark on guitar!) 14)Into the light with blood

INKBLACK Versus FONDLECORPSE Split 7" Ep

(Oakking Records - OAK002)
Release date:
2003

Inkblack Review:
Inkblack plays some solid death metal; it's quite melodic with thrashing riffs, hard-hitting drumming... And a very pronounced heavy metal & thrash metal touch to it. Song are tightly structured, in a really clear-cut manner, they made me think of Massacre ("From Beyond") mixed with Kreator maybe. Vocals are also a mix of growls and of a slightly clearer thrash metal-type voice. Occasionally pounding, fast & at other times just catchy and very metal-sounding. All around good musicianship, nicely composed tracks, plus a nice and clean sound production make for a very fun listen!
Fondlecorpse Review: Starts off with an intro from "Henry, Portrait of a Serial Killer": always a great mood-setter! Fondlecorpse is all about pounding death-grind... It's got ripping riffs and a nice, salient bass sound. The drums appear to be programmed, however they always feel natural and consistent... good job there too. Vocals alternate between deep guttural growls and higher throaty shrieks... Sound quality is just fine in my opinion, clean but not too clean. Like Inkblack, they slightly remind me of Massacre with maybe a little more Repulsion characteristics thrown in this time. The horror-influenced lyrics are a hoot and the cover layout is awesome, with an amazing front artwork by Jake (Tales from Uranus), a complete lyrics sheet and a fun back cover designed like a dvd cover... This Split Ep is limited to 500, get it while you still can.

Tracks: SIDE A, INKBLACK: 1)Breaking down the walls 2)Bow to the masters
SIDE B: FONDLECORPSE: 1)Bits and pieces 2)Formaldehyde soaked corpse (Tales of the embalmer part 1) 3)Kingdom of rot

BRAINWASH - Promo Songs

Release date: 2002

Review:
This italian band plays roaring brutal death metal, but keep their songs short & basic, almost grindcore-like; dual vocals with extreme guttural growls and some rabid shrieking, constantly pounding/blasting drumming, some very pronounced bass lines, thumping and thrashing basic guitar riffs... This is agreeable brutality, although not very diversified, Brainwash just sounds quite nice and heavy and keep their stuff short and concise. For reference, I'd say they definitely remind me of Blood, maybe Fermento & Reinfection too, only in a much more simple and basic vein.

Tracks: 1)Visions from Tomorrow 2)Next Stop: Unknown 3)R U Playing with my Brain? 4)Tears of Suffering 5)I am Sick! 6)Bugs

BLOOD AND SICKNESS - TUMOUR/M.D.K./KADAVERFICKER/TOTAL PENURIA/VOMIT SEX/C.V.I. - 6 Way Split Cd

(Duende Maldito)
Release date:
2002
Running time: 46:20

Review:
Here's a 6-way split cd for harsh/lofi/grind/noise-tollerant people only, this is really more like 6 demos on a cd, so you can forget about good sound quality or musicianship obviously, although a few of these bands might be worth a listen...
Tumour: This is a one-man goregrind project from the Netherlands. The sound quality is fair, but don't expect anything truly heavy, this is DIY grind... Basic songs, ripping, muddy guitar riffs and distorted bass, blasting drum machine and effects-heavy vocals, some kind of really bubbling and watery-sounding gurgles... Some nice and fun sickening goregrind... A few short movie samples, I recognized at least one small dialogue line taken from Fulci's City of the Living Dead. Overall, I'd say this sounds alot like a crossover between Lymphatic Phlegm and Slough...
M.D.K: Sweet, chaotic brazilian grind, quite heavy and downtuned, with a very prominent distorted bass, noisy guitar riffs, infamous guttural growls... The sound quality and mixing isn't perfect but it all sounds nice and clear and is still maybe the best sound production on this split cd... The drumming is tight enough but not so driving on the blastbeat parts. This is still listenable bestial grind/death/noise that slightly reminds of Rot & Rotting Flesh, also from Brazil.
Kadaverficker: Aggressive and bizarre german grind/noise... blasting drums, chaotic guitars, growling and screaming vocals... The sound is totally low fi, rehearsal type stuff and they use alot of movie samples. This is alot like Dismembered Fetus/Ear Bleeding Disorder, with very bad sound and sloppier musicianship.
Total Penuria: Again quite bad sound quality, but this band is in my opinion the catchier/less sloppy band on this cd. Some nice ripping and thrashing guitar riffs, heavily distorted bass, lots of midtempo and really tight, kick-ass drumming. There's definitely a touch of old school grindcore and crust to their stuff, think Extreme Noise Terror, etc... The vocals are angry growls and some bizarre, manic screams. Pretty cool stuff, maybe one of my favorite on this split cd.
Vomit Sex: Disgusting porno/gore/grind with god-awful sound production, you can't hear the drums at all. Distorted guitar/bass, disgruntled, spewy gurgles and growls... Yes, this sounds exactly like early Gut (from their old demo's & ep's...) Really bad but somewhat fun.
C.V.I: Brazilian extreme noise/grind, really over-saturating sound production, really tough to listen type of grind, pitch-shifted growls, chaotic guitars, blasting programmed drums, and just no song structuring at all! Insane shit but just one of the most confusing, hardest noise/grind to listen to ever.

Tracks: TUMOUR: 1)Unrelenting plunder, death, sadism and reprehensible bloodletting 2)Thunderstorm of puke! 3)Frenzied stabbing & psychopathic strangulation 4)Crystallized spintered crotch 5)Tutored in wildly depraved & methods of murder
M.D.K: 6)Apoplexia fulminante 7)Cannibal holocausto 8)Derrame cerebral 9)Trauma 10)Consumido pelo odio 11)Embolia 12)Pestilencia 13)Mortalha 14)Viscera
VOMIT SEX: 29)Forcing feaces down your throat 30)Gurgling with vomit in your mouth 31)ramming an axe up your infested cunt 32)Nosehole-shitdick-fuckin 33)Oral shit-fuck meditation through non stop intervaginal ejaculation 34)Vomitting plague of bile zombie
C.V.I: 35)To cum in a grave (and come back to the church) 36)The rectum of cannibal priest 37)Your infected blood mixes with my cum 38)Jeovah's bitch (a bitch like that must be sodomized) 39)Slaughter in discoclub III - "Saturday night fear" 40)Postmortum penetration with vomit and shit

BATHTUB SHITTER "Angel Save Us" 7" Ep

(Necro Obscure Terror - N.O.T 001)
Release date:
2003

Review:
Yet another glorious Ep by these japanese grinders... Filthy thrashing grind is what you get! With some crust parts thrown in as well as some more derivative, whacked out parts... Bad-ass guitar riffs, pounding bass noise, out-of-hand crushing drumming... The vocals are harsh grunting, growling and also some weird shrill shrieking! This is raw-as-hell, pulsating filth grind at its finest - Perhaps close to Gore Beyond Necropsy, only less noisecore-oriented & much more straightforward. The band uses some fascinating imagery & artwork, the lyrics are interesting too, I'm not certain what they're about exactly, it seems revolve around shit, very intriguing anyway!

Tracks: 1)Intro 2)Reek and leak 3)Big hip pig 4)i evil 4)Over kill 5)Angels save us (ass) 6)Stand by shit

MURDEROUS GRIND ATTACK A Nippon America Compilation

(Six Two Five Thrashcore)

Review:
Us/Japan Grindcore compilation! A great idea and some mighty excellent bands here...
He who Corrupts: Spasmodic grindcore, razor-sharp drumming attacks, assaultive grind riffs, screaming vocals, slightly raw but clear sound. Great overall intensity, occasionally some sludgy parts. Very nice band overall.
Brob: Blasting, heavy grind, down-tuned and rather basic grinding riffs, killer bass sound, very tight and fast drumming. Dual growls and manic shrieks. Some thrashing parts and rather clear-cut and straightforward song structures, this highly enjoyable, catchy and driving grind of the best kind! Full and heavy sound production make this sound really great.
Cathether (Us): Fast intense grind, nice chaotic grind riffs, blasting fast drumming, alot of shouting and screaming vocals. A slight hardcore influence.
Unholy Grave: Japanese grindcore masters... fast and thrashing grindcore with a punk touch. Wacky delirious screaming, shrieking and growling vocals, incisive guitar riffs, wild drumming... Grind at its wildest and rawest state; Unholy Grave is always a fun ride.
More Noise for Life: Schizo grind with songs going in every direction, insane drumming, basic noisy riffs, mostly shouted vocals. This is classic grind with a touch of hardcore in the old school Siege/Lärm vein.
Kalibas: The most technical band so far, insanely fast drumming, and quite intricate/complicated guitar riffs, screamy vocals... This is quite death metal-oriented but still extremely intense, blasting and totally speed-crazed.
The Index: Heavy stuff, thrashing but also very bass-driven, with fast, pounding drumming, pretty unusual and twisted vocals, some sludgy parts and also a bit of groove. Maybe also slightly metal influenced, but it's catchy and often blasts hard and fast.
Renegade: Straightforward raw grind with a touch of crust between the assaultive blasting grindcore attack. It's pretty damn intense, with effective and bad-ass grind riffs, vocals are aggressive shouts and shrieks. This band strikes a chord with me, they obviously have some genuine grindcore power! One of my faves so far.
Vulgar Pigeons: Rather chaotic grind-death, thrashing riffs, fast, intense rythms, aggressive shrieks, guttural growls... Nice stuff, but a bit chaotic, reminds me of Dismembered Fetus slightly.
Insane'n the Brain: Wild grindcore, a bit unconventional, really driving and fast, but with an odd and personal touch, the vocals are angry shrieking but a special touch, guitar riffs are very grindcore-oriented but structured in a most bizarre fashion, the drumming is fast and chaotic and again with a special touch to it, slightly disordered and weird. Overall, a very effective and original band, they manage to inject a very disorienting feel to their stuff. Definitely one of my favorite on this compilation.
Pretty Little Flower: Some more very chaotic, trenchant grind performed quite tightly, quite short songs with a pretty hurried feel to them. Effective and catchy stuff.
Bathtub Shitter: Japanese grindcore! One of the heaviest band on this compilation, dirty and raw grind riffs, prominent bass sound, tight and nervous drumming, dual vocals (weird, wacked out and piercing shrieking versus filthy guttural growls). There's always a nasty feel through their stuff. The sound is always crackling and raw. One of the tracks is a Sore Throat cover version, NOT one of the shortest Sore Throat songs though... This is killer material as usual.
Reform Control: Perhaps the rawest sound production on this compilation. Intense old school speed/grindcore, fast, blazing fast, screaming vocals, ripping riffs, extreme drumming... Some pleasant stuff.
Parade of the Lifeless: Some weird directionless grindcore here with some kind of free-jazz type song structures, obviously inspired by Naked City. Non-sensical guitar riffs, chaotic drumming, absurd shrieking vocals... That type of unpredictable jazz/grind is always a breath of fresh air to me.
Rise Above: Starts with a pure harsh noise intro and turns into classic type of grindcore, down-tuned and thrashy riffs, nervous drumming, furious dual vocals and a pretty damn raw sound production... This is reminiscent of Unholy Grave... Overall nice and fresh grindcore.
Phobia: That's the well-known Us band. Fast Grindcore. This are live songs.
Godstomper: Raw, noisy and chaotic grind with only drum and bass, slapdash and expeditious kind of stuff.

Overall a very very nice compilation... I only knew a handful of these bands so some nice discoveries here!

HAEMORRHAGE "Visions from the Morgue" Dvd

(Morbid Records)
Release date:
2004

Review:
This dvd is finally out and it's really amazing. First up you get 3 videoclips. I was impressed because they actually look really good. The first "Mortuary Riot" seem to be the one with the most production value. Nicely shot performance of the band in a cool old factory kind of location, that's intersected with fun segments of the band dressed as surgeons armed with syringes and knives, cutting up a blood-soaked Lugubrious, reaching brains in jars, etc... The second videoclip "Virulent Mass Necropsy" is pretty damn good too, shots of the band playing (the location isn't as cool as in the first one though, looks more like a studio), intersected with really explicit autopsy footage and stills, probably the sickest of the 3 clips. The third videoclip "Unlock the Morgue" is more of a relaxed clip, shots of the band performing a live gig mixed with alot of fun backstage stuff. Nice stuff!
The dvd is also filled with live shows...

Live at WFF festival 2002: This first gig is definitely the one with the better quality, with multiple camera angles, overall good sound quality... The band plays before a huge crowd, it's great to watch this! Lugubrious is a great show man, he constantly moves around the scenes, blood-soaked, making mimics, contorting his face... Luisma dressed as a surgeon... Ramon looks like he's having a blast... Rojas, stunning drumming! And Ana, she's great to watch! Tracks from "Emetic Cult" & "Grume" are always so kick-ass!
Songs: Decrepit Dejection - Dissect, Ecxhume, Devour - Mortuary Riot - Oozing Molten Gristle - Excavating the Iliac Fossa

Live in Venlo (Holland) 04.27.2002: The quality is slightly inferior but still more than fair. And this video is a lot longer too! Great performance, great fun! A good of old Emetic Cult favorites too!
Songs: Enshrouded in Putrilage - Decrepit Dejection - Dissect, Ecxhume, Devour - Mortuary Riot - Oozing Molten Gristle - Excavating the Iliac Fossa - deranged for Loathsome - Putrescent Necromorphism - Pyosified - Obnoxious (Surgeon of the dead) - Treasures of Anatomy - Anatomized - Midnight Mortician - Exquisite Eschatology - Necrotic Garbage - Decomposers - Im' a Pathologist

Live at Silesia Festival (Czech Republic) 07.15.2000: Some more fun! Not great but fair quality and a cool different playlist.
Songs: Necrotic Garbage - Exquisite Eschatology - Dawn in the Rotting Paradise - Witness of Postmortem Violence

Treasures of Anatomy - Live in Halle (germany) 09.04.1999: Only one track, nice quality.

Decomposers - Live in Ostrava (czech Republic) 09.05.1996: Bad quality but really fun performance!

Uncontrollable Proliferation of Neoplasm - Live in Praha (Czech Rep.) 09.04.1996: Again older stuff with not so good quality. BUT this is a cult "Emetic Cult" song and it's incredibly fun to watch it performed live, that's the song that hooked me up on Haemorrhage!

I have to state in tiny flaw in the menus, there's no "Back" button in some of the menu, so it's hard to navigate if you watch it on tv... It's easier if you watch it on a computer though.

All in all, this a must-have Dvd!!! Incredibly fun to watch, just really excellent and very well-done! Every Haemorrhage fan should rejoice!!!

Here some screenshots, I'll post more on the Haemorrhage website soon:

KUTABARE "Finger Food Fetish for the Morbidly Abnormal" Mcd

(Razorback Records)
Release date:
2003

Review:
Way heavy, twisted death/grind from this great new australian band (formed by Bestial Warlust, Undinism, and Corpse Molestation ex-members)... This album is an instant classic in putrid metal, allying catchy midtempo, speed-fueled rythms, splattery guttural grunts/growls and the utmost down-tuned heaviness. The result is very effective and has an almost sickening, barf-inducing effect. It reminds me alot of Dead/Gut (Germany) mixed with Autopsy - plus an additional touch of gore & grind to tighten things up. Songs are all solid, pounding, dripping with gore and vomit, occasionally spiced with intros from flicks such as Peter Jackson's Bad Taste... The whole imagery is weird, sick and rather humorous, with bizarre artwork and even more bizarre song titles... A very satisfying cd if you crave for down-tuned, slimy, gurgling and grinding death metal...

Tracks: 1)Religiously Frustrated 2)Moisterened Cunt 3)Frotage the fromage 4)Siamese Twins 5)Rime of Ancient Marinated Corpse 6)Dildo of Death 7)Alien Intelligence 8)Maggot Laced Meal 9)Assassin 10)Guinea Worm

SPLATTERHOUSE/GRUESOME STUFF RELISH Split Mcd

(No Escape Records)
Release date:
2003

Splatterhouse Review: This side is the same as the demo cd I already reviewed here. Very effective death-grind with a touch of gore. Elaborate riffs, thrashing, occasionally melodic but very straightforward, tight drumming and dual growling/shrieking vocals... All very well-performed, definitely in the vein of Exhumed. The last song is a very nice Haemorrhage cover version. Very clean sound, powerful production and entertaining gory lyrics.
Gruesome Stuff Relish: This is unreleased (I think) material from GSR, as usual excellent grindgore, amazing, warping sound production, tight and basic song structures, simple and catchy heavy riffs, squeaky shrieks, pitch-shifted gory backing vocals, always in the vein of General Surgery/early Carcass/Necrony/Haemorrhage... Fascinating Italo-spanish horror influenced lyrics... Just 5 really excellent tracks by one of the finest grindgore bands around! With gorgeous artwork and packaging, this split mcd is a must-have for all gore fiends!

Splatterhouse Tracks: 1)Maggot sermon 2)Awash in gore 3)Splatterhouse 4)Decom-posers (Haemorrhage)
Gruesome Stuff Relish Tracks: 5)The last survivor 6)Curse of the Templar Knights 7)Don't feel shame 8)Zombie madness 9)Jungle of flesh-eatin' beings

MAUSOLEUM "Cadaveric Displays of Ghoulish Ghastliness" Cd

(Razorback Records)
Release date:
2003

Review:
Amazing album... The band is clearly making their impression of Autopsy: the result is really successful and the resemblance is just uncanny, the vocals sound just like Chris Riefert's, and the rest is equally Autopsy-like: doom-style down-tuned riffs, highlighted with morbid and screaming melodic guitar parts, prominent bass sound, churning drum beats... It's all very tightly and well-performed... They perfectly re-captured the spirit and suffocating atmosphere of it all, complete with a sound production intentionally muddied out... it's damn refreshing to hear in times where death metal always sound so clean. Mean and dirty old school death metal is what it is... This is almost like a lost Autopsy album that you could place between "Severed Survival" & "Mental Funeral"... The album ends logically with a Autopsy cover version ("Destined to Fester"). The lyrics are totally old school horror, a joy to read, some excellent horror comic book style artwork too. If you miss Autopsy and old school death metal, don't miss this one!

Tracks: 1)Fles Fiends 2)Entombed in the Womb 3)Absolution for the Living Dead 4)Cadaveric Displays of Ghoulish Ghastliness 5)Regurgitated Rebirth 6)Mortal Extinction 7)Horrifying World of Disembodied Souls 8)Tombs of the Blind Dead 9)Destined to Fester
