ENTROPIC DEGRADE BEHIND PHILOGENY/THANATOLOGIST Split Cd

(E.U. 91 Serbian League / E.U.019)
Release date: 2008
Running time: 31:19

Review:
This could be my new favorite italian band. The material here actually dates back to 2004. This cd opens with a moody, harsh industrial/noise intro. Although as soon as the first actual song kicks in, you can clearly hear this band is the definition of pure grindcore, according to me, at least. The band flirts with noisecore but songs feel really carefully crafted and put together; Sound-wise, they really nailed the cavernous sound that's especially dear to Gore Beyond Necropsy, something totally brute and harsh-sounding but still with a great deal of warmth and downtuned heaviness to it. Early Napalm Death style is also clearly infused through the raw guitar riffing and squealing solos as well as the beautiful crushing, drum blasts! A couple of vocal styles are used, mostly low, roaring gutturals as well as piercing shrieks at the other of the spectrum, mostly with a gritty, totally distorted and saturated quality to it all... Fear of God might be another point of reference, especially regarding the primitive vocals that sometimes get very loud in the mix... This is just simply awesome grindcore with a great noisecore feel. This split cd comes in one of the most beautiful digipack layout I've ever seen. Stylish art and presentation, and a booklet filled with pretty cryptic and obscure lyrics...
Thanatologist Review: Unreleased 1996 material from this long split-up band is completing this cd. Thanatologist shares the same vocalist as Entropic Degrade... And if Entropic Degrade represents the Napalm Death side of grind, Thanatologist is unambiguously the Carcass one... This is one of the most faithful Carcass emulations, with The County Medical Examiners perhaps... It has alot of the urgency of the early Carcass recordings, with a further cold and clinical execution actually fits this particular style perfectly. Vocal work is superb with all the vicious snarls, growls and putrid pitch-shifted eructations that make "Reek of Putrefaction" and "Symphonies of Sickness" so exciting. Of course more of the early flesh-ripping Carcass essence can be felt here through the dark, morbid and grinding riffs, eerie guitar leads, clever composition work and raging drumming. The cover is obviously a throwback to Reek of Putrefaction too, and the collage of dead babies and foetuses is actually also a perfect match to the similarly themed E.D.B.P. cover art. A terrific release and masterpiece in every aspect, highly recommended!

SAKATAT "Yolun Sonu" Cd

Release date: 2008
Running time: 6:53

Review:
This is unequivocally the best turkish band I've ever heard; I'm detecting alot of Unholy Grave, Agathocles & Rot influences in this one... 10 tracks and 7 minutes, short, straightforward, fast, furious songs. Excellent, raw and sharp sound, killer, flesh-ripping riffs, bombastic drumming, dual gruff growling and raspy shrieking vocals... Definitely not weak shit! The drumming has some crust/hardcore/d-beat leanings at times and is catchy as fuck... I haven't got a clue what this band's screaming about but these guys sure sound pissed off about something... This release is actually a "tour cd" that contains a bunch of material from several different Split 7" Ep's. Anyhows... This is top notch grindcore/"mincecore" that packs a serious punch, well worth checking out!

CATHETER/WOJCZECH Split 7" Ep

(Haunted Hotel Records)
Release date: 2008

Catheter Review:
Here we have Catheter's usual brand of pretty awesome grindcore/hardcore. This is a nice, effective blend of kick-ass fast grind and slower sludge. Some solid riffage, explosive drumming (pretty vigorous blastbeat work), pugnacious vocal delivery, some nasty growling and shrieking... I couldn't find a tracklist on the cover but I'm counting 2 or maybe 3 tracks here... Good stuffs.

Wojczech Review: This one is another proficient grind/hardcore band, this time from Germany. These guys are definitely tight... Drumming especially is pretty fucking insane, really impressive stuff. BUT the guitar riffing is absolutely not to my taste though, I don't know how to explain it, but chords sound too damn "open", it's not typical grind riffing I'll give you that; another thing that irks me is a little too much high pitched screaming... So simply not my bag, some nice, brutal grind parts but too much of an overall hardcore/metal direction for me to really get into the songs.

CATHETER/MASSGRAVE Split Cd

(Haunted Hotel Records)
Release date: 2008

Catheter Review:
Once again, Catheter puts out grindcore with a certain proclivity for hardcore, and something of an assuredly "north american" sound, I'm thinking of bands like Assück, Excruciating Terror or Disrupt... Mostly really fast tempos but things can get slower and sludgier on a couple of tracks too. Production is damn good, heavy and pretty clean, a thick guitar sound and some very punchy drumming. Definitely good shit.
Massgrave Review: Massgrave's side doesn't have as balanced and powerful a production as Catheter's but their stuff still benefits from a very intense performance and a darker, more obscure and dissonant vibe... The mix is very bassy with a enormously prominent bass distorted sound. Stuff can get pretty damn fast but songs are very diversified in the way of rhythm, with a lot of moderate parts as well. Definitely a split cd worth checking out, two kick-ass bands in my opinion...

Mp3: "Catheter - Who's my Savior?"
"Massgrave - Mentally Congested"

Catheter Tracks: 1)Who's My Savior? (1:18) 2)Wasted (1:05) 3)G.F.D.L. (0:43) 4. Massgrave - The Price (0:54) 5)Empty (1:08) 6) Left Hand Grind (3:09)
Massgrave Tracks: 7)Clouded Mind (1:20) 8) Wasted Life (3:03) 9)Future Uncertain (1:12) 10) Mentally Congested (2:04) 11)Fueling The Hate (2:21) 12. Massgrave - Silenced And Disposed (1:32) 13)Live Life (1:22) 14)Human Plague (0:40) 15)Death Trap (1:52)

AGATHOCLES/AVULSION Split 7" Ep

(Haunted Hotel Records - #25)
Release date: 2007

Agathocles Review:
Agathocles is fucking Agathocles, no big surprises here. Here you've got 6 tracks of their traditional, straightforward grindcore/mincecore. Remarkably, there's no crust/hardcore incursions to be found on this one though, just pretty much pure grind. Pounding blasts, spastic guitar riffs, buzzing bass sound, roaring and vociferating vocals as well as angry lyrics... This stuff is from 2007 so still with Tony (R.I.P.) on bass. Sound production is fair, pretty raw in the usual Agathocles way. Just a pretty good middle-ground AxGx release!

Avulsion Review: This one is pretty hard to describe, this is a very peculiar sounding grind/death band. Pretty blistering, fast guitar work, some cool bass licks, tons of jackhammer type blasts and virulent roaring vocals...This is pretty typical blasting grind/death for the most part but songs can go into pretty wild rhythmical/structural tangents at times too... If I had to throw a reference, I'd say maybe late Brutal Truth or Total Fucking Destruction, something in this more freestyle grind territory.

Agathocles Tracks: 1)Not a Bit 2)Big Flat Cages 3)Hear More 4)Bang Bang 5)Dishonest Honesty 6)Only Friction

Avulsion Tracks: 1)Casting stones 2)War Torn and Awaiting Judgement 3)Taking Back What Was Never Ours to Begin with

EMBALMING THEATRE/XXX MANIAK Split 7" Ep

(Haunted Hotel Records - Room 13)
Release date: 2006

Embalming Theatre Review:
Here's another one of these bands that seems to challenge Agathocles with their numbers of releases... This is one of these bands that doesn't vary greatly between releases. Pretty solid, straightforward Death/Grind with simple, heavy, thrashing fucking riffs, growling vocals, brutal drumming, the usual from Embalming Theatre. Actually, I seem to remember reading some of these lyrics before, so I'm not totally sure but the material here might even be recycled. Lyrically, this is as usual highly unpleasant subject matter inspired by real life cases (abuse, cannibalism...) Ok stuff, but all this band's releases kinda sound alike to me.

XXX Maniak Review: You probably know this one. This is basically Enemy Soil/Agoraphobic Nosebleed style drum machine stuff, with an added really obnoxious attitude. Similar fast thrashing guitar work, bludgeoning drum-machine blastbeats, ultra-short tracks, very hardcore-style shouting vocals... Not bad but this band tries so hard to be offensive and funny, it comes off bland. Alot of movie intros used (there's a bunch of samples from "Happiness" in this one) and porn imagery; And I don't know what the fuck is up but this side of the record seems to play in reverse by the way... Alright then.

Embalming Theatre Tracks: 1)Rotten Corpses Wherever I look Pt II 2)Sadisitic Mom 3)Come to Me and I Eat Your Horny Flesh

XXX Maniak Tracks: 1)Gay for Christopher Reeve 2)Raped in a Fire 3)I guess 4)Ape Mummy 5)3 Girls attempted Kidnapping 6)Gays Vs Blacks

I'M GOING APE Compilation/Split 7" Ep

(Breathlike Violence/No Fucking Labels)

Review:
Intumescence adopts a pretty different style than their usual heavy gore/grind here. I guess to fit the style of this compilation which is of course pure noisecore!
Short, virulent tracks, blisteringly noisy riffs, tons of feedback, delirious screaming and shrieking vocals is law.
Yes Means Yes completes Side A with even more extremely raw noisecore, similar to my previous description! Insert says 1998 so this is probably old material...
Then Side B has Deche-Charge who apparently re-recorded their 1991 demo#2 containing 271 tracks for their part of the ep here... Essentially this is extremely short and repetive noise farts. I think this qualifies as blur core (noisecore's retarded cousin). Writing down the track list must have taken longer than actually composing any of these tracks!
Rotgut is aka CSMD and they end this Ep quite nicely with some more... noisecore, apparently this material is from an unreleased demo from 1991! Some really nice and weird, trippy guitar sounds mixed with violent bursts of noise and shouts. I'd say this is my favorite part of this ep and the most original sounding band here with a really cool looking band logo too!
Well, anyway if you're into noisecore, you can't miss this!

Tracks: Fuck off! I'm not writing down Deche-Charge's stupid track list!

KILLASLUTRA Demo Cd

Release date: 2008

Review:
Killaslutra is a new band spawned from the ever so fertile australian underground... Line-up includes a familiar face in Steve (Unidinism/Kutbare)... Musically, what else to expect but scathing, brutal grindcore really? Vicious, relentless guitar riffage, roaring distorted basslines, insanely intense, fast drumming, pretty twisted and convoluted song structures, blood-curdling shrieking and bestial roars... These guys play loud and fast but always keep it tight... Something in the direct line of Undinism or The Kill. This 6-song demo feels like a punch in the face, it also comes with an totally amazing 6 or 7 pages comic book, the art is really awesome (myspace.com/plainhole) and the story line extremely deranged too. Definitely check these guys out!

MEATHOLE INFECTION/VIOLENT GORGE Split Tape

Release date: 2008

Violent Gorge Review:
What happens when you mix old school Napalm Death style grindcore with some Autopsy doom/death metal is Violent Gorge. The band keeps their songs short and sweet, there are some slow doom parts that usually don't linger on too long before an ultrafast grind part kicks in. Sound production is perfection to my ears, the perfect balance of heaviness, rawness and clarity... The guitar tone shreds, just bad-ass and the riffs are grind/doom incarnate, drumming is fucking tight as well as bombastic. The explosive blast beat segments are especially impressive! The vocals are the most Autopsy/doom-influenced element of Violent Gorge, they're super echoy and agonizing, roaring and mumbling, honestly a little bit over-the-top in terms of echoe & reverb, but that was the intended idea I think... This tape also contains covers of a few classic crust/hardcore bands like Siege/Protes Bengt/Asocial. Definitely my favorite canadian band grind band right now, they're incredibly tight and pretty original too.
Meathole Infection Review: Meathole Infection delves even deeper into death metal than Violent Gorge, also with tons of doom elements to it, much less grindcore influences though and a slightly harsher, more obscure sound production. But again some really inspired song writing, wonderful riffing, perfect suffocating atmosphere and a great match to Violent Gorge's side actually. The main point of reference is clearly early Incantation to me. This is some of the best death metal I've heard in a while, the raw sound fits the band just great, makes them sound totally evil and in general it's just refreshing to hear some raw sounds in these times of over-produced metal! Overall, this is an awesome pro-done tape, top notch bands, cool layout and art, not to be missed!

Violent Gorge Tracks:1)Septic Excavation 2)Pyogenic Vittles 3)Sad but True (Siege) 4)Untamed Emesis 5)Delicate Situation 6)Trippelmoral (Protes Bengt) 7)Lat Inte Lure Dig (Asocial)
Meathole Infection Tracks: 1)Pandemic Outbreak 2)Countless Cadavers 3)Abandoned Chapel 4)Satan's Super

SMG/VIOLENT GORGE/HOMICIDE/PUREZA GENOCIDA 4 Way Split Tape

Release date: 2008

SMG Review:
This killer 4 way split tape starts with SMG from Malaysia playing awesome fast, in-your-face, thrashing grindcore with short, blistering tracks, pounding/blasting drumming and pissed off roaring/screaming vocals... The first 3 tracks have a nice clear sound, but cuts a little too abruptly between tracks with intro samples and stuff. Otherwise this is a very impressive, extremely energetic band, totally fucking fast and insane, with a little bit of an Agathocles/Unholy Grave "mincecore" influence maybe. The last 3 tracks are live recordings, a lot harsher but still intense.
Violent Gorge Review: Here's some more excellent material from this awesome canadian band, check the above review for more about the band. Again sound production here is terrific, great grinding guitar tone, vicious riffage, devastating drumming performance and deranged vocals that sound like death rattles recorded in a echoy crypt. Just the most awesome ferocious grindcore with an added Autopsy style creepy atmosphere that makes all the difference.
Homicide Review: Homicide is awesome raw, thrashing grindcore from Brazil with an air of early Brutal Truth. Dual growling and shrieking vocals, thrashing riffs, awesome prominent distorted bass sound, ultrafast drumming... This is the band with the longest songs on this split tape it seems too, it seems like their tracks clock almost 2 minutes, full of riffs and maybe a more thrash/death metal way of writing. Anyway, just another great brazilian grind band that needs to be checked out!
Pureza Genocida Review: This tape ends in the most chaotic way with the harshest band on the split, another fucking kick-ass brazilian band here playing raw, brutal grindcore with a touch of noisecore. Blistering guitars, totally distorted bass sound, intense drumming and totally abrasive vocals. One of the songs uses pitch-shifted vocals, the most goregrind influenced band on here perhaps... Cool samples too from Scarface and other stuff... Simply a top notch split tape.
Check the bands' myspace for sounds!

PUTRESCENCE "Sledgehammer Holocaust" Cd

(No Escape Records)
Release date: October 31st 2008
Running time: 30:15

Review:
This band is still going strong with their third album... Pretty much picking up where their last release left off. The same raw, grinding death metal styling. Vocally, it seems like this one goes in a more grindcore-type direction, more raw vocal chords, throat-torturing shrieking than lower death growl like in the previous material it seems... Guitar riffing is pretty metallic, just fast, tight, shredding type of stuff, still slightly more death metal oriented than grind... But with a distinctive enough touch to not fall into any generic brutal death metal type clichés... In the way of rhythm, this is pretty varied, you've got fast and grinding as well as more mid-tempo sludge type stuff. Overall, I'd say I'm especially getting a later period Brutal Truth vibe. Sound production is just right for the band, thick, flesh-ripping guitar riffs, prominent distorted bass lines, punchy drumming and the assertive vocals definitely always on the forefront... This advance copy didn't come with any lyrics but judging from the song titles, this is as tongue-in-cheek as ever, an avalanche of absurd violence and gore; The album is sprinkled with some amusing samples I really dig too, I picked up on a couple of sound bytes from the tv show League of Gentlemen in particular (which I was just re-watching recently), always a sign of good taste! Overall, this album doesn't suck too bad! Who can resist getting an album with Sledgehammer and Holocaust in the title anyway!

EXIT WOUNDS Cd

(No Escape Records)
Release date: 2008
Running time: 22:47

Review:
Exit Wounds heavy, ultra-downtuned guitar tone is the line of Neuropathia, Squash Bowels & all, you could almost talk about a "polish sound" here... Musically, this is pretty much pitch-perfect grindcore. Killer, heavy and basic guitar riffs, blistering fast drumming, short and sweet songs, just great stuff. I've got to admit the vocals aren't exactly to my taste, being more in a high screaming range (Personally I prefer hearing those used more as backing vocals), sometimes a little too repetitious. The band would benefit from following more diverse lyrics lines and more varied vocal styles... But overall this is extremely solid shrieking grind in the Yacopsae & Retaliation tradition. Definitely a band to look out for... Production is sounding awesome, really thick and heavy... Layout is sumptuous and stylish as well as putrid and decrepit, absolutely flawless in that regards...

COFFIN/SKULLHOG Split 7" Ep

(No Escape Records)
Release date: 2008

Skullhog/Coffin Review:
First Side is Japan's doom masters Coffins, this band seems to be pretty prolific these days... I just got their split Cd with Anatomia & Grudge which was amazing (and recommended), I think they've got a new full length cd coming too. These guys deliver some of the best doom/death metal around. Slow, grinding and mesmerizing riffs, some catchy drumming (almost d-beat kind of stuff at times) and ghoulish vocals... Just one original track and a Carnage cover ("The Day Man Lost"), after Necrony, Machetazo and now Coffins... this song is starting to get covered a whole lot but it's still one of the best Carcass-inspired songs ever and Coffins put a very personal spin on it here...
Side B is Holland's Skullhog (formerly known as Bile) pretty hot off their awesome split with Regurgitate... The band continues their pitch-shifter-free direction and seem to adapt to Coffins slower paced style here. The side contains only one long, a pretty sludgy doom song too... Perhaps with some more Autopsy influences than usual too... Plus there's lyrics, I don't remember the band using lyrics before (I might be wrong) but this is a nice addition. Art and layout is pure class, this thing looks ultra stylish... My copy came on superb red vinyl out there, I'm not sure if there's more colors but red is perfect. No Escape doing vinyl is a pretty rare occasion, but the few Split Ep's they made so far like the now really old Fuck... I'm Dead/Sanitys Dawn Split Ep (first No Escape release ever?) and that Bradiphagia(CBT)/Neuro-Visceral Exhumation split Ep too... have all been quite memorable; Anyway, this one is pretty fucking awesome too. Definitely grab this while it's still available!

NETJAJEV SOCIETY SYSTEM "Netjajev Society System" Cd

(Haunted Hotel Records/Breathlik Violence/No Fucking Labels)
Release date: 2007
Running time: 22:48

Review:
I haven't been following this band's activities so closely so I'm not sure if this cd contains new stuff or old stuff... Anyhows, it's damn good stuff. With Netjajev Society System, Ulcerrhoea's Magnus delves into more Rupture-style punk/hardcore/grind style stuff. Being an admirer of Cadaverous Suppuration/Carnal Shroud/Ulcerrhoea since the beginning, it's great to know that guy is still as creative as ever... This material has a definite raw, intense power, something of the same caliber as his past grindcore endeavors... Only with whackier and more deliberate spacey synth/Korg-type arrangements. The result is totally unique sounding and original, some of the most imaginative and well-crafted ultra-violent music I've heard in a long while. This stuff can be blistering fast, violent with really mean, raw guitar riffing, blasting drumming, bombastic rhythms and all-out yelling kind-of-stuff but still with some catchy Dead Kennedys style punk energy and a really crazed parodic sense of composition... Song titles are not as effortlessly offensive as Rupture, but still in a similarly sick, joking kind of tone. To keep this brief, this shit is insanely brilliant, it also really packs a punch!

Tracks: 1)Aerialite 3000 B.C. (1:39) 2)Earth Kin A Slab Eel (1:29) 3)Sewer Pipe Of The Gods (0:59) 4) Little Vacuum On The Prairie (2:02) 5.
