LYMPHATIC PHLEGM/I SHIT ON YOUR FACE Split 7" Ep

(Goatgrind Records)
Release date: 2008

Lymphatic Phlegm Review: This one isn't out out yet, hopefully it will be soon... Eleven short but sweet tracks of good old Lymphatic Phlegm pathological Gore/Grind sickness... You should know this by now: Reverb-heavy, eerily melodic riffs, pitch-shifted gurgling vocals, moderately fast blast beats programmed as always. Their sound stays unchanged. Great stuff as always, I would have liked to hear them mix it up with different rhythms, this prominently blasts... But songs here are shorter in time than on their latest album, mostly between 20 & 40 seconds... So the short and fast impact was probably the intended effect for this Ep. Artwork and layout is absolutely top notch, Fernando/Black Hole must be responsible for this one again...

I Shit on Your Face Review: Sharing this split is another brilliant brazilian grind band. Fabulous downtuned grinding riffage, kick-ass drumming, fast and varied, sound on this is rather rough but with alot of heaviness retained. The vocals are of the guttural death-growling/pig-squealing kind. I'd say this is Goregrind with a slight Death Metal edge, Dead Infection sometimes comes to mind. The band's name and scatological imagery/contents are pretty sick and distasteful, but the band actually takes the time to write lyrics and uses pretty cool-looking artwork, there's actually a real effort to it all and not just porn pictures taking off the internet. Two of the best brasilian bands together on what should be one of the best Split Ep's of the year! I think I heard this would be released on golden colored vinyl, don't miss this one, out soon on Goatgrind Records...

LYMPHATIC PHLEGM "Show-Off Cadavers - The Anatomy Of Self Display" Cd

(Black Hole Records - BHP016)
Release date: 2007
Running time: 31:20

Review: Let's start with the layout and art which is breath-taking on this release; the medical pictures and the whole cover and booklet is up there with Pathologist's "Cadaverous Odes..." It's printed on glossy paper which looks beautiful (although you're bound to leave finger prints all over this one...). Lymphatic Phlegm's unique sound is still a breath of fresh air in a downtuned grind world. Reverb still being an integral part of the band, they almost abuse it but it's what gives the band its cold edge (that and the programmed drums). Guitar riffs are sharp and clear, strangely melodic, and the bass lines are pretty prominent too (although an even louder bass mix would have been superb). Song-writing is great, piling up awesome riff after awesome riff. Lymphatic Phlegm keeps their simple and effective Exulceration-style pathological Gore/Grind formula intact but also add some flourishes to it this time, with the use of sound effects inside their songs; the band even starts using guitar leads on the song "Compulsive Concupiscentia of Pathologist"... There's a bunch of instrumental tracks (I noticed "Y" too, with metallic scalpel sounds in place of vocals) Some of the tracks lead into one another and the whole album has a distinctively morbid atmosphere. Overall, I'd say this is Lymphatic Phelgm at their peak and maybe their best album to date, absolutely pure pathological Gore/Grind art!

Tracks: 1)Detailed Bypass Surgical Procedure (1:39) 2)Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease Vs. Cadaveric Dura-Mater Grafts (1:21) 3)Y (2:13) 4)Forensic Evidences: Detailed Entomological Calculations (2:58) 5)Miscarriage Conceptions In Obstetricia (1:11) 6)Gynaecological Sickness (1:20) 7)An Underg Post-Mortem Exam (0:32) 8)Phagocyte Dysfunctions By The Increasing Of Bacterial Infections Incidence (1:45) 9)Compulsive Concupiscentia Of Pathologist (2:26) 10)Pneumo-Diffusion Dysfunctions For Anatomo-Pathological Abnormalities Of The Diffusing Membranes (1:14) 11)With The Rib Cage And All Major Organs Removed, The Cadaver Was... FLESH GRINDER "Crumb's Crunchy Delights Organization" Cd

(Black Hole Records - BHP017)
Release date: 2008
Running time: 33:01

Review: Here Flesh Grinder is back with a Bad Taste concept album, which really doesn't quite fit with the rest of their more pathologically themed discography. But heh, Peter Jackson's Bad Taste is one of my all time favorite gore flicks and it certainly deserves a dedicated album like this one. Musically there isn't that much change compared to the band's previous catalogue, this still sounds like the same Flesh Grinder from the beginning, mixing brutal death with some Gore/Grind. It'd say part-Carcass worship (especially in the vocal department) and part-brutal death metal with a guitar work and guitar tone almost in the vein of early Sinister, kind of technical, compex riffing and alot of pinched harmonics. Song-writing is a little all over the place, my opinion is that it lacks a simpler dynamic backbone. The band works better on the more mid-tempo Reek of Putrefaction type elements and simpler riffing. The drum sound sounds a little too triggered and cluttered with an over-use of double bass stuff and the guitar work gets too technical for my tastes. Sound production is nice and clear, guitars are louder than anything else in the mix, more vocals, drums and bass would have been nice... The layout is looking good with some pretty crude but funny artwork, and songs and lyrics completely inspired by Bad Taste. You've also got tons of random Bad Taste samples too... In my opinion, a flawed, kind of messy album but it's got some petty solid stuff too, awesome pitch-shifted vocals and enough Carcass style goodness to satisfy my bloodthirsty needs, just check out the following Mp3 sample to get an idea...

EXPURGO/SHATTER DEAD (Ex-EXUTORY) Split Tape

(Underground Pollution)
Release date: 2007

Expurgo Review: Expurgo is a one of the most intense grind band from Brazil and definitely one of my new personal favorites. Pretty devastating drumming and dark, grinding riffing that reminds me of Dead Infection alot, and vocally it makes me think of Gore Beyond Necropsy at times... The band has quite alot of variety, from crushing slow to totally fast, grinding and chaotic including some d-beat and even a bit of groove. The guitar riffing is absolutely inspired and quite inventive, the distorted bass lines incredibly catchy. Song-writing is pretty clever but also deliver on the savage grindcore brutality front, it's a nice balance. The band also plays a mean Regurgitate cover ("Testicular Trauma"), one of the best I've heard. Check out my interview with this great band right here too!

Mp3: "Expurgo - Esgotos"

Shatter Dead Review: The tape I'm reviewing was out under the name Exutory but the band changed their name in the meantime and the Split vinyl 7" Ep version of this recording will be under the band's new name Shatter Dead. The band is also brazilian and the perfect counter-part to Expurgo. They play an even more straightforward and stripped down type of grindcore. Simple but effective, ripping guitar riffs, pretty filthy downtuned sound, ultra guttural kind of vocals, violent drumming, slightly sloppy in a chaotic grindcore kind of way but with enough structure to keep everything together. This is a violent, visceral kind of grindcore, I'd say another great brasilian band to check out!

Expurgo Tracks: 1)Esgoto 2)Sofrer Em Paz 3)P.F.D. 4)Consumo Dejeto 5)Testicular Trauma (Regurgitate Cover) 6)Discontroled by Compulsive Alo-Rectum
Executory (Shatter Dead) Tracks: 1)Obnoxious 2)Untiled 3)Molotov Revenge 4)Relentless Carnivora Breeding 5)Alligator Pit 6)Blood and Intestines 7)Lung Infection 8)Scratched Cornea 9)Untitled 10)Street Trash 11)Trudging on Garbage 12)Isolation 13)Untitled

OFFAL s/t Cd

(The Hole Productions)
Release date: 2006
Running time: 27:16

Review: This sick little album starts with a pretty familiar clip from Bloodsucking Freaks (it's been used before by Gut and other bands but this sickening film is always a terrific mood-setter). I won't beat around the bush, Offal is clearly emulating Autopsy here... The opening song is pretty fast and furious and heavily recalls "Twisted Mass of Burnt Decay", with some slightly more gut-churning, in-your-face Gore/Grind panache and a pretty badass Impetigo-esque ("Dis-Organ-Ized") use of pitch-shifting effects (mixed with some "natural" shrieking also). The following second track is a slower Death/Doom number, the moderate tempos allow guitar riffs to mature pretty nicely and lets some really putrid atmospheres peak out. The rest of the album seem to alternate between creepy, slow and ass-kicking fast songs. Riffage is pretty awesome, downtuned and catchy and like I said it definitely owes alot to Autopsy and Impetigo, but there are worse bands to borrow from out there, Offal does a fantastic job with it. The fuzzy bass tone is really excellent. Vocal duties are taken over by Andrea of Lymphatic Phlegm so you can expect some pretty expert crunchy gore-gurgling grunts! Sound production isn't flawless, guitars lack some slight treble/overdrive for my taste but it's all pretty nice, clear, sufficiently heavy, and perfectly listenable. This also contains quite a lot of interesting cover versions, you've got 2 Gut tracks and 4 Autopsy tracks (!), logically putting an end to the album. All faithful and perfectly executed renditions of the originals. This is coming from another brazilian label with Hole in its name (don't mistake it with Black Hole Productions!)... Definitely one of the best bands from Brazil right now, I'm looking forward to their future stuff!

Mp3's: "Offal - Anal-Thorized Autopsy"

Tracks: 1)Anal-Thorized Autopsy (3:29) 2)Swarming Maggot Feast (2:28) 3)The Spew (0:56) 4)Cadaver Breath (2:45) 5)Festering Rectal Sludge - Disgorgement (1:25) 6)Feasting On Excrements (2:08) 7)Wound Fuck / Confessions Of A Necrophile (2:32) 8)Anal Vapor Rising (3:03) 9)I Shit (You Eat) (0:25) 10)Your Fun-Eral (3:58) 11)Chared Remains (4:07)

HORRIFICA/RAPED BITCH Split Cd

(Humanos Mortos! Prod.)
Release date: 2006
Running time: 28:16

Horrificia Review: Horrifica is yet again another talented brazilian band delivering quality death/grind. Solid, ripping guitar riffing, fast and pretty skilful drumming and very precise well-crafted song writing. The vocals are your usual death growls, slightly monotonous, but I like the inclusion of a couple of pitch-shifted roaring outbursts though... Really, this band is top notch and their stuff really grabs the attention, they definitely have an edge to them. There's definitely a death metal vibe about them but the band decidedly leans towards grindcore territory more than average brutal death. I would say Horrificia has an air of early Brutal Truth ("Extreme Condition Demand Extreme Responses" era), but yeah the band actually writes some pretty intricate riffs, even with a slight bit of melody and the songs have a great flow to 'em. Definitely one of my fave brazilian death/grind bands out there! I think they took their name off an underground gore movie by a french director called Antoine Pellissier ("Maleficia"), that movie has been in production for a few years but is still not out yet as far as I know! So I definitely dig the horror concept and inspiration behind the band as well...

Raped Bitch Review: Now Raped Bitch is a colombian band so it doesn't quite fit in the "Brazilian Grind/Gore" thing I'm doing here. But still this is a pretty damn awesome (one-man, I think) band. Definitely some of the best drum machine Grind/Gore I've heard in a long time, complete with pulverizing drum programs, ultra-fucking-fast blastbeats as well as catchy d-beat parts, pretty mindblowing, grindcore riffage and blistering pitch-shifted gore-gurgling vocals... I think this shit is up there with awesome drum machine stuff like Dysmenorrheic Hemorrhage, Psychosadistic Haterapist and all... The sound production is a little on the harsh side, still perfectly fine, just in an over-saturated, over-driven way and overall pretty damn powerful! The porn intros can be a little tiresome but nevermind, this Raped Bitch stuff is too good to pass up!

Mp3's: "Horrificia - Coagula"
"Raped Bitch - Genital Freak"

GORE "In Sickness Intent" Cd

(Deranged for Leftovers/Rotten Foetus Productions)
Release date: 2007
Running time: 55:06

Review: This cd compiles several Gore recordings. There's 1999 stuff from back when the band made a temporary come-back and you've also got earlier demo stuff released before the classic "Consumed by Slow Decay" full lenght Cd. The 1999 material is sludgier and harsher than ever before (and similar to some of the members other band Cativeiro formed after the Gore break-up)... This is still in the same old Grind/Gore vein though, dissonant guitars, twisted riffs, ultra fuzzy bass, savage/sloppy drum blasts and sickening, putrid vocals (a mix of phlegmy grunts and some pitch-shifted gory goodness). There is a chaotic and raw splattery vibe to this stuff not unlike Carcass "Reek of Putrefaction" or early Regurgitate... Although the disharmony and brute sound borders on noisecore, some of the riffing still has some of the band's old death metal flavour to it as well. It doesn't reach the heights of their earlier stuff, this is very worthwhile Goregrind, sound production is simply tons dirtier and rawer than "Consumed by Slow Decay".
This cd also treats us to the band's earlier material, this stuff is definitely worth checking out.
The 94 demo "To a Life Consumed by Slow Decay" is pretty awesome especially in that it uses a drum machine, it almost gives the band a tighter edge. This stuff might be the best thing the band has ever done. Vocals on some tracks are a little different, a lot more screamy and hysterical, pitch shifter is still there although more like a background presence. I absolutely love the sound production on this demo, totally wretched and dark, almost like early Sepultura or something... Songs are pretty much demo versions of the "Consumed by Slow Decay" album, but I almost prefer the sound here, the guitar playing and song arrnagements seem different. Definitely some of the best Goregrind ever.
Following is material from 93 and 92... Weirdly as we go back in time, sound production feels much more interesting and more hard-hitting to me, awesome guitar tone and punchy drums. The vibe is perhaps more like rehearsal-type stuff but overall more natural and catchy. No use of pitch-shifters, only snarling shrieks and naturals growls, the 92 demo is maybe more akin to Rotting Flesh in style, way more primitive and guttural. This cd is an awesome collection. Layout is Ok, I could have without the shitty scat picture on the disc... And some pictures from the old demos cover art, flyers or something would been a nice touch. Another thing about this cd, I noticed discrepancies in the track list, it only indicates 31 tracks instead of the 34 on the actual cd. I tried to figure things out, I think some of the intro songs are not listed as actual tracks and the 99 session seem to have an extra song so the whole track list is simply wrong, you can check out my corrected track list further down.

VÔMITO "Gore Mutilation" 7" Ep

(Fudgeworthy Records)
Release date: 2001

Review: Let's go a few years back again with this one... Vômito is a pretty awesome, now disbanded goregrind flavored death metal band from Brazil. This is part mid-paced, part bursting with blastbeats and a whole lot of double-bass drumming. Riffing is rather thrashing death-metal based, simple and dark in a pretty cool way. Vocally, the band mixes pitch-shifted gurgles and "normal" roaring death metal vocals. Overall, this is a pretty awesome Ep. Clean, stern production; musically, the band almost has a "Pathologist" type sound, in the more "musical" side of Carcass inspired bands... Comparing with Vômito's other releases, some songs are repeated here, I think in different versions. The marble colored vinyl looks great, the gore pictures contained inside are pretty barf-worthy. Quality gore/grind like Vômito is all too rare these days, too bad this band's gone...
By the way, I collected all the info I could and put together a Vômito - Encyclopedia of Grind page with detailed discography, interview, mp3's & stuff... (Will try to do this for more bands if I can find the time...)

Tracks: 1)My Private Morgue 2)Emergencial Autopsy 3)A Night Of Intense Pleasure 4)Exterminio 5)Oral Penetration For A Dick With Gonorrea 6)Gore Mutilation 7)Purulent Menstruation 8)Painful Method Of Masturbation

ROTTING FLESH "Infanticious Monstrosities" 7" Ep

(Rotthenness Records)
Release date: 1993

Review: Another blast from the past! Thought I'd continue my homage to great, long time broken-up brazilian bands... I have to take a break from only reviewing current crap... This has got to be one of the best Gore/Grind Ep's ever. Perfect dissonant grind riffs, fuzzy bass tone, growls and distorted pitch-shifted voices, grinding drumming, and all around well-crafted grind songs, über-cool ghoulish pathological lyrics... Everything's pretty much perfect here, and the old school death metal sound and vibe is absolutely impossible to replicate... It's got an aura similar to early Dead Infection and some Agathocles with a great sound from beyond the grave. Songs from this Ep are repeated on the "Submandible" Cd with a different mix, but this first Rotting Flesh Ep has more charm to it in terms of layout, with the cool black and white design, sick hand-drawn art, the ultra-large logo, cool-looking cut-and-paste lyric sheet... Nothing compares to this piece of bad-ass Gore/Grind and old school Death Metal goodness!
I also gave Rotting Flesh an Encyclopedia of Grind page with discography, scanned interview, flyers, covers, mp3's and other crap... So Check it out!

Mp3's: "Manifestation of Chronic Disease"

Tracks: SIDE A: 1)Manifestation of Chronic Disease 2)Consumed by Neo-Cannibalistic Worms 3)Decomposition of Fetid Limbs
SIDE B: 4)Intestinal Virulency 5)Mucouteral Maceration 6)Cerebral Hemorrhage 7)Malignant Pulmonary Cancer
