AGATHOCLES/AMOCLEN Split Cd

(Lecter Music Agency)
Release date: 2008
Running time: 34:48

Agathocles Review: The Agathocles side of this split cd is a live recording made in Peru! I'm not very familiar with the band's current line-up so it's interesting to hear what they sound like at the moment... Honestly this recording doesn't sound much different than most of the other Agathocles live stuff I've heard, obviously great, raw, simple grind songs but a pretty dry recording. I might be completely out of the loop but I didn't realize Jan had taken up guitar instead of bass... Anyway I'm guessing the band's entire live set is included here, 26 tracks with a very nice mix of classic and new songs, I especially respond to the stuff off Razor Sharp Daggers probably because I've listened to that album the most...
Amoclen Review: Here's a new czech band playing pissed off grindcore in a slightly crust tinged kind of way, thrashing out pretty frenzied and grinding riffing with a thick sound and an enegetic hardcore style, some nice prominent disorted bass lines, quite fast rhythms and drumming, strictly screaming, shouting, yelling types of vocals and a pretty tight sound production overall... All 7 tracks are raging attacks and all quite catchy... Personally I would have put Amoclen's side upfront on this split cd since this is new studio material and with its shorter running time of 13 minutes, it would grab attention a little more than Agathocles live side which is fun but doesn't offer anything exactly new. Anyhows musically I'd situate this band between Cripple Bastards, Extreme Noise Terror, Nasum & maybe Gride in a similar trademark czech sound. Lyrics are completely written in czech language. Overall this is quite solid stuff although I would maybe need to hear more from the band to really judge... If you want to check out this band live, Amoclen should be playing at the Extreme Aftershow Party in Prague 13.7.08 for the Obscene Extreme Fest in a few of days (where Agathocles is billed too)...

AGATHOCLES/THE VANISHING ACT Split Cd

(Sir Punkly Records)
Release date: 2008
Running time: 22:02

Agathocles Review: As far as I know this is new Agathocles material. Sound mix is a little peculiar, it seems to be a throwback to the very early Agathocles stuff. Sound's very echoey, reverb-heavy, kinda metallic, guitar sound is a bit thin but the bass distortion sounds pretty killer. I'm not sure if this is "studio" material or self-recording, this all sounds a little rough and definitely interesting. Cd starts with totally grindcore songs in the ancestral AxG tradition: very, very short songs, stripped to the bone, basic riffs and quick drum blasts and then there's a couple of more hardcore-infused songs to relax the tension... Oh, it seems like this cd actually contains a bunch of the same songs as the Split Ep w/ Desecrator which I was also just listening to, both recorded at the same date and same place so they definitely must be the same. I'm not sure what to think of that but after checking track lists carefully both releases still seem to contain exclusive tracks, especially this cd since it's got twice as much tracks...
The Vanishing Review: And the other party on this split cd is a pretty awesome band from Canada... They're mixing the heavy, downtuned doom/death metal sounds of Autopsy with more uptempo and blasting rhythms and a gnarlier grindcore frenzied energy, also bringing together Chris Reifert type roaring agonizing growls and wilder, hysterical screams and shrieks... The band definitely creates a sound of their own that way. Although the approach seems similar to another interesting canadian band like Violent Gorge (minus the guts and gore image). Kind of a Grindcore Autopy... I don't know if it's a new trend but I like it anyhow. Songs run pretty long like 3 or 4 minutes but things stay pretty fast and intense throughout. Musically, this is totally tight, with great riffage and pretty hard-hitting drumming; production-wise it's pretty irreproachable, a nice, sludgy and heavy mix with a really warm texture to it, very listenable. This release split is capped off with a really terrific Impetigo cover ("Dis-Organ-Ized"). The cover artwork also looks pretty cool and original and of course there's a complete lyric sheet for the Agathocles side... Just a nice split release.

GRUESOME STUFF RELISH "Horror Rises from the Tomb" Cd

(Razorback Records - RR44)
Release date: 2008
Running time: 31:26

Review: Spanish Grind Gore gods Gruesome Stuff Relish are back! Musically things are pretty much unchanged for this new opus. "Horror Rises from the Tomb" might have an even further death metal slant maybe... Anyway, the Carcass influenced raspy shrieking and pitch shifted snarling vocals are still there, the thick barrage of downtuned guitars and bass distortion too... Gruesome Stuff Relish aren't speedfreaks, I'd describe this as almost midtempo stuff, there are lots of blastbeats but songs all have kind of a sluggish doom feel which I think works great for the band allowing their awesome flesh-ripping guitar riffs to come across especially well, and when the groove and grind parts happen, they kick so much more ass. The music's almost comparable to a Fulci zombie, not the fastest, totally putrefied but extremely ferocious! There is extremely catchy and grinding riffage in there, also complemented with chilling, eerie screeching guitar leads, tons of groove, exciting pounding rhythms and just plain perfectly constructed songs. Sound production seems more pronounced and well defined but slightly less warm than "Teenage Giallo Grind", to me the album kinda feels like a cross between Bolt Thrower's "Realm of Chaos" (for the guitar tone), Dead Infection's "Surgical Disembowelment", General Surgery's "Necrology" & Haemorrhage's "Emetic Cult". It's also really great to hear the sickening phlegmy voice of Stevo (Impetigo) again after all these years, his guest vocals on "Dead Walk the Walk" sound as great as ever! Then of course the whole thing is seasoned with a nice selection of creepy and weird movie samples. Cover artwork by Jeff Zornow is looking pretty sweet and is filled with Hell of the Living Dead, Burial Ground & Zombie Holocaust references... Gruesome Stuff Relish's trademark Euro Horror influenced lyrics are of course still present, always ultra simple and to the point, always great fun to read... It covers all the main italian exploitation genres from zombie, cannibal, giallo to mondo flicks with titles like "Violenza Carnale" inspired by Sergio Martino's masterpiece Torso (such a great movie I have 3 different dvd versions of it!) They trade the usual old school horror nostalgia for some old school grind nostalgia in "Grindscene '91" too . But the song with the most intriguing title "I Know What You Did Last Summer (In Thailand)" doesn't actually include any lyrics at all though, I wonder what's that all about! By the way, all the "Hell of the Living Dead" references on this album also made me think maybe they should have written a tribute song to Bruno Mattei in there somewhere since the guy passed away recently, it would have fit right in. Anyhow.... This is a grand return from the band I think! Ok let's go with 4 & a half Splattered Brains!

Tracks: 1)Triumph Of The Dead (3:29) 2)Psychoslasher (1:47) 3)Horror Rises From The Tomb (1:43) 4)Fullmoon Ritual (1:41) 5)Violenza Carnale (1:41) 6)I Know What You Did Last Summer (In Thailand) (0:20) 7)The Symbol Of Tupanamba (2:05) 8)Love Goddess Of The Cannibal (2:26) 9)Z Is For Zombie (0:32) 10)The Dead Will Walk The Earth (2:25) 11)Hordes Of Death (1:44) 12)Blow Their Heads (1:52) 13)Feast Of The Tribe (2:01) 14)Virus (1:20) 15)Bloodshed In Weert (0:11) 16)Ultra Zombie Mayhem (1:06) 17)Grind Scene '91 (2:05) 18)Somewhere At An Altar III (0:31) 19)Nudo E Selvaggio (2:27)

CIANIDE "Death, Doom and Destruction " Mcd

(Razorback Records - RR45)
Release date: 2008
Running time: 38:11

Review: Death fucking metal in its purest form, this is. Cianide is such an awesome band, they almost make me think of an american equivalent to Unleashed (whose 2 first albums I've been spinning a lot lately...), with certain elements here and there that also bring Grave, Bolt Thrower or Death/Massacre to mind... Hence the midtempo, pummeling, thunderous, ultra-heavy kind of old school death metal; The Master cover at the end of this cd should also further indicate Cianide's old school leanings! I realize I'm started to cite a little too many bands, and Cianide definitely has their own proper fierce, enraged and stubborn sound. This cd is filled to the brim with testosterone, a hefty dose of pulverizing doublebass drumming, some strong, immensely catchy thrashing riffs, great prominent bass lines sizzling with amazing distortion, simple, memorable, striking song structures and furiously roaring death grumbles spewing incredibly bad-ass lyrics written solely about Death, Doom and Destruction! This cd is actually a re-issue of their 1997 Lp and it comes with brand new, purely awesome cover art by Putrid (the original cover is still available as an alternate too, but in this case the new Putrid art wins for me, it's perfect!). Mark of Impetigo also delivers some cool liner notes, so here's your stamp of approval! Cianide definitely fits in perfectly in the Razorback Records roster of bands... Real Death Metal freaks shouldn't be without this one.

Tracks: 1)Rage War (2:11) 2)This World Will Burn (4:11) 3)Metal Never Bends (2:15) 4)Envy And Hatred (5:40) 5)The Power To Destroy (3:57) 6)Salvation (3:56) 7)Deadly Spawn (2:52) 8)(We Are The) Doomed (5:24) 9)The Truth (Master Cover) (3:07) 10)The Dying Truth '96 (4:38)

REGURGITATE/SKULLHOG Split 7" Ep

(Regurgitated Semen Records)
Release date: 2008

Rgte Review: First off it feels great to see the old school logo creep back up on the cover! Musically Rgte's style on this feels similar to alot of the "Sickening Bliss" material, slick grind riffs, chainsaw guitar tone, blistering fast rhythms, bludgeoning drumming and dual pitch-shifted gore-gurgling/shrieking... Just the expected Rgte formula, but this never gets old to me at least... The only difference might be an ever so slightly rawer and more brute sound production or it might just be the vinyl format which gives it kind of an edge here... Just 3 super tight and fast-as-fuck grind tracks... Both bands share the same front cover (meat-eating kids, possibly cannibal kids?) and the inside layout is a band/live picture collage...
Skullhog Review: The opening track for Skullhog's side is very Fulci influenced with a City of the Living Dead intro, Fabio Frizzi's theme is even an incorporated into the song itself (actually performed by the band and not a sampled which I thought was pretty cool) If you're out of the loop Skullhog is actually Bile, which I guess must have been renamed after receiving a cease and desist letter from the other mainstream Bile band... Strangely the band kind of goes for a slightly different musical approach so Skullhog might as well be an altogether different band! The main difference is the total abandonment of the pitch shifting vocal aspects, Skullhog goes for a more Martin Van Drunen (Asphyx/Pestilence) type tortured vocal delivery, perhaps with a little more screamy and hysterical knack though. As much of a fervent pitch shifter supporter I am, I think this actually fits the music quite well, so the change feels pretty natural... And I don't know if it's the vocals or what, but musically things suddenly sound a lot more Repulsion-esque to me, and I'm all for the resurgence of the Repulsion worship; in other words I'm digging this side to the max too, great shit all around!

RGTE Tracks: 1)Colon Collapse Disorder 2)Snorting Caustic Vapour 3)Regurgitated and Humiliated
Skullhog Tracks: 1)Curse of Dunwich 2)Cannibal Frenzy 3)Deadstare

DESECRATOR/AGATHOCLES Split 7" Ep

(Bringer of Gore)
Release date: 2007

Desecrator Review: Here's a band I haven't heard from in quite a few years! They're one of the few pretty good french grind bands... Their stuff used to be much more straightforward grind/death but their new stuff feels a bit more Nasum-ified or maybe closer to another french band like Blockheads. This is high energy grindcore with pretty elaborate riffing now, the real novelty for the band dwells in the high pitched shrieking too. Although it's still good to hear the lower, deeper death growls weren't completely abandonned and are still leading the game. The guitar tone and style is pretty radically different too, just higher, more dynamic with prominent bad-ass bass parts too. Some elements and parts of songs kick serious ass although overall it sometimes feels like it's going in too many directions at once for my taste... Anyhows, sound is top notch, it's a pretty sweet side really.
Agathocles Review: Agathocles is... Agathocles. The 2 first songs are fast and frenzied grind attacks, just the way I like 'em. Third song shifts to a slower, mid-paced crusty ballad typical of this stubborn belgian band (ok not the most involving song to me here)... Fourth track gets back on track with more kick-ass grind and the fifth and final track caps things off with the most memorable track off this ep I think ("Chronic Death")... Overall, I'd rate this Ep as a good one from the AxG monster! Stylically no surprise really, this band never really changes. Ultra simplistic grind riff awesomeness, punishing and abrasive vocals, lots of drum blasts and some d-beat... Lyrically, this is pretty sincere, politically charged stuff of course although the "Porcelain A" & "Chronic Death" reek of nostalgia/melancholy & depression! Which is something I don't remember that much coming from the band... But this is the first Agathocles release I'm listening in quite a long time too... All in all, a pretty outstanding Split release with some gorgeous artwork and layout too.

LAST DAYS OF HUMANITY "Rest in Gore 1989-2006 " Digipack Double Cd

(Bones Brigade Records/Eyes of Terror)
Release date: 2007
Running time: 77:05 (Cd1) / 76:57 (Cd2)

Review: Now that's what I call a well fucking done discography cd! This is another one of those releases that seem to render part of your vinyl collection worthless! Anyway, thick digipack, 2 discs filled to the brim, a nice complete booklet detailing every aspect of the cover artwork, production, line-up, etc... The deluxe treatment. The material is presented in reverse chronological order, so you can notice things getting progressively rawer, more primitive and generally sloppier as you go along... This band has the merit of always competely disregarding melody and musicality and still remaining pretty rivetting simply for sheer gore-blasting, shrieking brutality, often to the point of grotesque absurdity. The most structured the band can get is on their Regurgitate/Nasum/Impetigo cover tracks as well as their middle period (2 first full length), the early demos and final releases are pure noise, chaos and madness... Part of the vinyl stuff seemed to be taken directly from vinyl (maybe not going back to an original recording) it doesn't help in the case of the Split with Lymphatic Phlegm which must be their absolute filthiest recording ever. I'm not that keen on the inclusion of portions from all the full length albums, it kinda cheapens the whole thing. I'd rather listen to a whole full length or not at all personally. But still, most of vinyl/compilation/demo stuff is included in its entirety and the early apocalyptic demo stuff is especially interesting (I still vividly remember the total shock of first hearing that material on a local grind radio show!) . You're even treated to some really nice unreleased material (sometimes just different versions of the album stuff though) including the elusive Split with Murder Corporation that was eventually cancelled! The liner notes by Hans are great too (although also reproduced verbatim in my recent "interview" with the guy, I didn't have this double cd at the time of writing these questions, ha!) All in all, definitely a must-have for fans of this neat little goregrind/noisecore band! 17 years is a pretty impressive stretch of time...

FONDLECORPSE "Blood and Pop Corn" Mcd

(Razorback Records)
Release date: 2007
Running time: 18:26

Review: Fondlecorpse is the quintessential Razorback band, it's all about Death Metal, Horror movies and... more Death Metal! This release is basically 5 slices of intricate, well-thought out, death metal, with memorable thrashing riffs, bludgeoning rhythms, pissed off roaring and growling vocals and the whole deal... Song-writing is top notch, really dynamic and catchy songs, with clearly a lot of sweat poured into them, extensive running time of 3 to 4 minutes... Songs filled to the brim with great riffing ideas, great hooks, arrangements and some pretty chilling guitar leads and many other neat little things like incorporating the Halloween theme in one of the songs... This is the first recording with real drumming I think, which definitely brings Fondlecorpse a more full-fledged sound; the bass parts are again quite prominent in the mix too, all these elements add up to some really nicely textured death metal! Influence-wise I'm still hearing some Massacre ("From Beyond"), some Impetigo mixed with the trademark thrashing "Razorback" sound of Frightmare, Lord Gore, etc... Of course, the band also performs the lost art of writing lyrics, tackling some major horror movies like Hills Have Eyes and fucking Halloween (not an easy task!), but the band does a brilliant job. Cheesy 80's horror is not forgotten with Basket Case & Chopping Mall thrown in there too! Presentation is also killer, Putrid picks up the slack from Jake (Tales From Uranus) in the cover art department with a colorful creature carnage, there's also some inside art by Jeff Zornow in total comic book style... This is a really promising foretaste to the upcoming "Creaturegore" full length!

Tracks: 1)Twice the Hate, Twice the Carnage (3:11) 2)Feral Mutant Attack (3:57) 3)Halloween, The Night He Came Home (3:57) 4)Whats in the Basket (3:32) 5)Chopping Mall (3:49)

NEUROPATHIA "Bubba Luciferi" Cd

(Lifestage Productions)
Release date: 2006
Running time: 38:59

Review: This cd is starting to date and Neuropathia is putting out a new album right now but I'm only listening to this right now so... For those who haven't got this already here's a review... This is the second or third Neuropathia album (Not totally sure if "Satan is a Cunt" counts as a full length). The album starts with a repetitive rather slow/midpaced intro which isn't the best opening ever... But things get serious right into the second track, with an Entombed-worthy downtuned, thick and heavy guitar tone, tons of speed, blasts and well-placed grooves and total rock n' roll feel and a whole of d-beat kind of stuff, drumming is a whirlwind too... You've got dual low-range raucous grunts and higher screaming (pitch-shifted gore shrieks rear their ugly heads here and there, but still not quite often enough for my taste!)... The style reeks of Blood Duster, Pungent Stench and especially Nasum but also with some of the "polish" sound of Squash Bowels/Dead Infection... Sound production is pretty fucking huge, just totally heavy which seems to be the norm these days. Songs are super catchy, it's an avalanche of killer fucking riffs, the groove parts never feel too forceful, and although I can't help but miss the band's purer gore/grind early sound, this is a nice balance between grind and Wolverine Blues style death/rock... (still just a little more grind wouldn't have hurt!) The art and layout looks totally awesome as usual from Szymon (http://www.myspace.com/sickofeverything) and totally makes up for the plain awful-looking "Graveyard Cowboys"... The inside layout features alot of retro/camp pictures perhaps there for ironic purpose including some stills from Mario Bava's Diabolik, which camp or not is one of my all time favorite movies! Fans of grind n' roll should get their money's worth with this one.

PULMONARY FIBROSIS "Organ Maggots" Cd

(Last House on the Right)
Release date: 2007
Running time: 38:59

Review: Don't be fooled by appearances and the gore/pathological imagery, this stuff is actually pretty much brutal death metal with an ever so slight goregrind aftertaste. Despite an air of Dead Infection and a rare "Reek of Putrefaction" vibe (mostly thanks to some of the pitch-shifted gurgles), I'd say the styling owes alot more to Suffocation than early Carcass on alot of the tracks... Vocals are mostly natural death growls and throaty gurgles with the occasional pitch shift here and there, riffing is very chunky, with a lot chugging brutal death metal riffs (I recall one instance of repeated pinched harmonics too) and the drumming's very clicky with blastbeats and a lot of doublebass and all the other brutal death aspects. And as usual with brutal death, it can get bogged down with attempts at complex riffing spiralling out of control and get pretty boring... I'm totally digging some of the sick splattery vocals though which gives them an edge over alot of brutal death metal bands. The strangest thing are the humorous elements thrown in there, you've got a few parts with clean voice and some Gut-style weirdo shouting vocals too... The band even has the balls to use a fucking cowbell (!!!) on the opening song! What the fuck?! I suspect their producer might be called Bruce Dickinson and that he specifically asked for "More Cowbell" on this track! Anyhows... Layout is looking good, totally pro-done, the sound production is pretty solid, if you can picture a mix of Lividity and Last Days of Humanity this is almost what this sounds like!

MODORRA Demo 2005

Release date: 2005
Running time: 26:37

Review: I've just bumped into this tape which must have been laying around here for a while, the package has my old address on it! Anyway, this stuff is really nice death metal with a clear intent to be done the old school way. Despite being swedish, US bands like Repulsion or Impetigo spring to mind more vividly... But clearly some of the early Entombed sound also seeps through the cracks! Sound production is solid, guitars sound quite heavy and thick but all within a nasty, raw stectrum with a typically old school death metal distortion! Song-writing is quite tasteful, it's simple and straightforward the way I like it, but still really dynamic, never too static... Riffing is pretty twisted, fast, dark & effective, the fuzzy bass sound is quite prominent in the mix and in the vocal department this is very throaty and vociferating kind of stuff... And lastly the drumming is pretty damn tight, rhythmically you've got midpaced stuff as well as also lots of blasts and speed, it's not the fastest thing ever but again it has a natural, old school feel that's top notch! This tape's presentation is also totally old school, typewriter stuff as well as a pretty neat looking hand-written track list... This is simply awesome death metal with a smidge of grind, simply the way it should be done, definitely a band to look forward to... Splits w/ G.S.R., Squash Bowels & Hypo Christians were announced at one point, but I'm not sure if they're still going on, it seems like a Split LP w/ Fistula is coming out instead!
Tracks: SIDE A: 1)Intro 2)Stick, Slab and Cut 3)Lifeless, Faceless and Choiceless 4)I Drink her Blood 5)Ham and Eggs
Side B: 6)Breath of Decay 7)Proper Drugs (Wayne) 8)My Way 9)Tramstoo 10)Faggot

DYSMENORRHEIC HEMORRHAGE "The Last Vapors of Gangrenous Fetor" Tape

(I.S. Records)
Release date: 2008

Review: It's a crime to have kept these recordings unreleased since 2004! This is some of the best drum machine goregrind ever, probably D.H. best recordings... Definitely my favorite D.H. sound mix, some of the old recordings had a tendency of having vocals a little too loud in the mix, this one definitely sounds more well-balanced. Actually here everything's seems pushed to the max, it's really overwhelming... The guitar sound is terrifying, thick, fuzzy, distorted, it almost seems like your speakers are gonna catch fire... the blunt drum machine battery is relentless and the infernal pitch-shifted gurgling is just... the final nail on the coffin! This contains some of the best pure grindcore riffs I've heard in a while. The crust/d-beat rhythms coupled with the pulverizing blastbeats hit the spot everytime, this stuff owes alot to old Regurgitate... But the whole 80's Napalm Death and crust influences is what makes Dysmenorrheic Hemorrhage especially great... D.H. goes back to raw primitive fibre of old school grindcore... Detractors of goregrind should check this out and take note, goregrind doesn't have to suck! The imagery and tracklist is this mix of pathological/putrid gore and sly humor, it almost seems refreshing among the current "scene" mostly inspired by gonzo porn and all kind of stupid crap! If this is the last D.H. release ever, this is a perfect way to end it all!
