FROM THE ASHES/NASHGUL Split 7" Ep

(Cooperaccion Rcds/Fundacion C Y C.)
Release date: 2006

Review:
From the Ashes: Pre-dominantly high screaming/shrieking vocals with quite a few low growling/roaring parts as well... Blasting speed & some crusty rhythms in 6 relatively short songs... One great punchy sound, pretty dynamic drumming, blistering grind riffs... I definitely like the lower vocals better, I'm continually growing tried of higher screamy vocals (especially when they're too snarly and nasal) All in all this is extremely pleasant grindcore with a touch of crust...

Nashgul: Now here's some pretty fucking furious grind, with in-your-face bombastic grinding blasts, primal, basic grind riffs, animalistic growling and shrieking... The band also injects some slower doom moments/interludes, but always resort to all-out crusty grindcore outbursts one way or another! This is simply fantastic, very intense grindcore straight out of Spain which seems to have a very interesting scene at the moment... If you dig great stuff like Looking for an Answer, Nashgul is definitely for you... Layout & artwork is looking pretty awesome too... Just a terrific and highly recommended piece of vinyl... Bonus points for using that opening scream from Fulci's City of the Living Dead!!!

Tracks: Side From the Ashes: 1)BaLansgang 2)Contaminated 3)Final Closure 4)My Creation 5)Another Source-Another Truth
Side Nashgul:
1)Ignorante 2)Feto 3)Educacion Absurda 4)Mad Max 5)Atrapados en la Red 6)Masacre Multinacional

NASHGUL/SEWN SHUT Split 7" Ep

(Power It Up)
Release date: 2006

Review:
Sewn Shut: This swedish grindcore monster is back... You can expect the usual dose of fucking heavy grindcore... The songs here seem to have a lot more mid-paced death metal elements than I remember the band ever using in the past, but this stuff is still quite incisive and also with a fair share of insane blastbeats, this band is still capable of providing true grind chills! Of course extremely low pitched growls, vicious, angry shrieking vocals, totally downtuned riffs and overall a really nice and thick, grinding heavy sound... This is fucking great stuff as far as I'm concerned!

Nashgul: This spanish band plays mighty fine grindcore! This stuff thrashes hard, blasts fast and is assured to kick your ass! Speed and heaviness seem to be the band's main objectives, that's something I definitely appreciate... Alternated low growls and high shrieks, pretty devastating drumming, blistering grind riffs... Really tastefully violent and raw grindcore from this extremely promising band then! Lyrics in spanish with an english translation provided too... Slightly more clever and interesting stuff than the norm. Again gorgeous artwork and impacable layout with a nice insert containing lyrics (for the Nashgul side only). All things considered an incredible split release, so don't hesitate to grab this one...

Tracks: Side Nashgul: 1)CNP (Cuerpo Nacional de Policia) (01:59) 2)Amancio Ortega (01:37) 3)Envidia & Amistad (01:09) 4)Humanicidio (02:01) 5)Rehenes del Sistema (01:26)
Side Sewn Shut: 1)Awaiting Death (01:45) 2)Power Scheme (02:25) 3)Eternal Damnation (01:20)

HYMEN HOLOCAUST "Blood Feast " Cd

(No Escape Records - NE025)
Release date: 2006
Running time: 31:49

Review:
Morris from the infamous dutch band Cliteater continues to explore female nether regions with his own personal Hymen Holocaust one-man project... In a few words, this stuff is impossibly downtuned, almost to the point of nausea and grinds away at a bone-shattering slow pace, a chainsaw-like guitar sound and some really putrid, heavily pitch-shifted vocals belched out in rhythm and spiralling out of control... This album doesn't offer a whole lot of variety, but the songs are all pretty solid... Sound quality is quite nice and thick; really, Hymen Holocaust is so damn heavy and distorted it's dizzying and mind-numbing... Normally I'm much more into faster grind stuff, but Hymen Holocaust is a nice listen and does a nice job of delivering the gory, grinding doom goods in a perfect Mortician/Bile/The Day Everything Became Nothing way... Lyrically this is obviously a pretty sordid affair (because wow lyrics have been written for this and they're even printed in the booklet!), at times somewhat humorous but mostly just plain sick and sleazy... Don't let the ugly blue layout & doll cover put you off, there's some really good stuff contained inside, if you're into really slow, heavy goregrind this is the shit to get...

HUTT/NOISEAR/GATE "Crushing the Grindcore Trademark" Split Cd

(Blastafuk - BAF003)
Release date: 2006

Review:
This 3-way split cd is a damn strike of genius, it allies 3 bands wallowing in abrasive and ultraviolent grindcore, resulting in one of the most exhilirating release I've had to pleasure to expose my delicate eardrums to in quite some time... The cd starts with a pulverizing performance by a brasilian outfit by the name of Hutt, their debut album was pretty awesome and they sure keep up the impressive work on their side of this split here... Fast, hyper-energetic, blasting drumming that'll shred your face, precise and ruthless thrashing riffs, savage roaring and shrieking vocal delivery... Everything's kept together by a pretty immaculate sound production - the band's biting rawness is restituted with sparkling clarity here... 14 blazing tracks, each and every one of them feels like a punch in the stomach!
Noisear comes next, their sound is slightly more muddied down, quite nasty and heavy but equally intense, pulsating with blistering guitar work, maniacal screaming vocals and maddening, twisted song structures... Just more excellent grind that'll assuredly get your blood boiling...
Japanese band Gate gives the coup-de-grâce on this split release, it's the very first time I'm hearing this band and this is a very pleasant surprise... These guys play really tight and really heavy grindcore, blasting, blistering, obsessive, with low roaring vocals... This reminds me of Terrorizer slightly, maybe mixed with Discordance Axis from whom they do a cover version therein... To sum this up quickly, this is a very strong split release, to top it all off artwork and layout is simply gorgeous, this is out on the appropriately named label Blastafuk from Australia, don't miss this one!

FUCK...I'M DEAD "Gore Grind Thrash Attack Live" Dvd

(No Escape Records - NE026)
Release date: 2006

Review:
Drummers are usually the essential element and what makes a good grindcore band, how can you put on a good live show with just a drum machine?! Well Fuck... I'm Dead shows you how it's done on this intensely fast, blasting, thrashing and shrieking grindcore performance, all captured on video... The dvd opens with a silent menu so don't fiddle with your volume, but be prepared to get your head blasted off once you press play and the first song bursts out... Sound is quite excellent, clear, heavy, the guitar riffing ripping through your flesh, the low, sizzling bass tones, the ferocious vocals and the devastating programmed drums all come across in a pretty limpid way... So obviously this show is basically a plethora of really perverse and blasting grind tunes executed in a row... But Jay's foul-mouthed inter-song banter and song descriptions are also priceless! Filming and editing style is quite nice and dynamic too... Fast cuts, nice and pretty diverse alternating angles, some nice shaky camera movements and dirty zoom-ins combined with strobostropic lighting... All great stuff that totally fits the band's hysterical pace and outrageous sound! Some additional live shows are also included as bonuses, obviously rougher-looking but still nice to have, especially a performance aboard a boat which is particularly fun to watch! Also the same main show is also included as a seperate cd, maybe a different live set for the audio-cd would have been more interesting, but this is still pretty cool and sound is definitely awesome on this too of course... All in all Fuck... I'm Dead looks like one damn brutal and mindblowing live band, this dvd is definitely recommended if you want to experience the band without taking a trip all way to Australia! IMPETIGO "Ultimo Mondo Cannibale" Cd

(Razorback Records)
Release date: 2006

Review:
What else can I say that hasn't already been said about this classic... Well, not much... But the principal attraction to this release (to me at least) is finally having the cover art as it was originally intended in all its gut-munching, raping and maiming glory! Musically, honestly I can't really tell if the sound has been remastered or what, anyhow it all sounds quite close/faithful to how Ultimo Mondo Cannibale used to sound, which is fine by me. Raw, nasty riffage, powerful drumming and monstrous vocals, it's still all here and that's all I need... The songs are still just as great as ever, each and every title here really is a classic! I still absolutely adore this album no matter how many times I've heard it and I still relish every little detail from this album, from the awesome pitch-shifted growls of the brilliant opener "Dis-Organ-Ized" to the the sizzling distorted bass intro of "Revenge of the Scabby Man" that continues to send chills down my spine to the absolutely infallible cannibalistic, catchy groove of "Mortado"... The beauty of Impetigo is simplicity, before death metal started getting inferfered and meddled with tons of different influences and boring technical musicianship... The band wrote perfect, ingenious pieces of simple, catchy gory grind and death metal. I say this album is legendary and a must-hear for everyone!
In regards to this re-release specifically... My only nitpicks would be that the pictures of the album's alternate cover art are slightly too small, full sized pictures would have been excellent! Including the Cannibal Ferox penis-chewing alternate cover art (which made it on a Picture Disc in the past) would have been cool too! But oh well, I'm just being a geek... And that way more space is dedicated to the fascinating liner notes by Stevo... Damn, those are extremely interesting to read, I almost wish Stevo would write a book about more of this stuff, I'd definitely read it, and that's saying something cuz I usually don't read any books, hehe! Oh yeah, this edition also includes the "Faceless" Ep (some of Impetigo's best material) as bonus as well as a coupld of live tracks... All in all, this re-issue is all done with great taste and respect, I doubt this will ever be done any better, I therefore deem this to be the ultimate "Ultimo Mondo Cannibale" release!

ZILLION/PATISSERIE "Crushing the Grindcore Trademark" Split Cd

(Discos Al Pacino)
Release date: 2006

Review:
This very nice split cd opens with a japanese band called Zillion that plays strange midtempo "grind" with gurgling vocals... These guys seem to be into bondage imagery and german grind in the vein of CBT (they even play a pretty faithful cover version of Mucupurulent's "Gay's Erection") Sound is slightly raw but sufficiently clear, slightly lacking in heavier tones but all perfectly listenable, and this stuff is definitely above average for the genre... But Patisserie is my definitely fave of this release, this band might sound familiar to you, this is the newest project of Hagamato, former Bodies Lay Broken & Pantalones Abajo Marino member... The guitar playing style (fast, grinding and totally downtuned with a slightly overzealous use of pinch harmonics), the sickening splattery vocals and the made-up crypto-pathological vocabulary are consistent with Hagamato's past work/sense of humor (?)... If you like the aforementionned bands, I'd say this is the direct continuation of them both. Personally I simply love this stuff, the sound's comfortably heavy, the songs are extremely catchy with all the twisted riffage and gut-bursting vocals... The drumming sounds like it's programmed/a drum machine but it all sounds pretty natural even with tons of blasting rhythms! Art and layout isn't exactly inspired (an autopsy picture taken from the internet) but I guess spoofing the goregrind genre might be the point here?!... In case the twirling logo looks really cool...

DIS-ORGAN-IZED Zine Issue #4

Release date: September 2006

Review:
Here's the fourth issue of this belgian publication and clearly this is the best one yet... This zine looks like it's tightened its editorial line aiming for something a lot more focused, with less filler material, more content and with a much clearer and worked out layout... Reviews are quite plenty and detailed and the interviews are all pretty juicy. This issue has inties with Vomit Spawn, Fuck Off and Die, Nuwhore Commando, Mesrine, Hideous Mangleus, Looking for an Answer, Intumescence, Infected Pussy in store... Nothing else to say really, go get it and read it by yourself... Yes, this is one of the best grind zines around and it's definitely worth seeking out...
