LAST DAYS OF HUMANITY "Putrefaction In Progress" Cd

(Bones Brigade Records)
Release date: 2004
Running time:
24:51

Review:
This is the first Last Days of Humanity album that features absolutely no intros and damn, it actually makes the band works so much better on every level! It leaves you absolutely no time to take your breath or recuperate... This cd is total insanity, just one hell of an intense, grinding ride! Last Days of Humanity kept pretty much the same spirit along the years even with a frequently changing line-up; it feels like this album encompasses all their previous releases, although with an additionally heightened speed factor. This whole album has barely any dicernable guitar riff in it, just a chaotic maelstrom of low-tuned 6-string mush and distorted bass kept together by Mr. Marc Palmen's relentless blastbeats, delivering one of the most intense blastbeat drumming performance in grind history... Despite sounding slightly mechanical, these beats are extremely impressive, inhumanly fast, precise, really clearly the star of the show here... The drumming is assured to leave you breathless... Vocals are actually helmed by a different guy (Hans) this time and he does a killer job, I'd even say LDoH vocals never sounded so good... It's basically the same old sickening, gurgling effected growls, but it seems to me that they actually show slightly more range than on the last couple releases... And part of the roaring belches even seem to be throw-backs to earlier vocal stylings (from "The Sound of Rancid Juices Sloshing Around Your Coffin...") Honestly, I listened to this several times and I can't remember any of it, this is because this stuff is actually really close to noisecore, only kept together really tightly by the drumming! The final touch to the cd is a hysterically funny 3 minute track of nearly non-stop blast-beats, that almost sounds like it's playing on loop (although it really isn't... at least I don't think it is...)... All in all, a perfect epitaph for this wild band that really tested the limit of visceral goregrind extremity and raw noise. This is assuredly the band's finest achievement and their most exciting release, to bad it's their last one, but stopping at your peak and leave people wanting more is always the coolest way to go I think!

ROSKOPP 7" Ep

(Crucificados Pelo Sistema)
Release date: 2006
Running time: 8:57

Review:
This Ep is the extremely impressive debut release of fresh australian band Roskopp who are playing a terrific mix of hard-hitting grindcore and raw goregrind... More influences are probably worked into their stuff as well but they're all blended into a swift, cohesive whole... Sound production I think is pretty damn awesome, the balance between raw and warm feels just right (with the raw having the slight edge, the way I like it), the guitar riffs are ripping, soaking in churning, distorted bass lines, but still with a real clarity and a razor-sharp tranchant to them, the only defect might be the bassdrum sound slightly drowned in the mix, which can easily be overlooked due to the band's sheer brilliance! Song-writing is simply top notch, with an extremely effective use of tempo changes, with all-out bombastic blasts often counter-balanced with crusty d-beats or slower breaks... Things are constantly kept moving and dynamic and are bound to get your blood boiling... The drumming here is an intense tour-de-force, tight-as-fuck, ultra-fast, with insane amounts of blastbeats, wild fills, pounding rhythms and also a fair share of groove especially from the midpaced parts... Songs are kept basic and pure, always fast-paced and with some really clever riffing that keeps you hooked, often catch you off guard or outright rip your face off! Vocals from Jake (also part of the great Garbage Guts!) are also purely excellent, quite versatile and diverse, from blood-curling screams, ferocious growls to gut-bursting pitch-shifted growls, it's got it all... The art direction of the whole Ep layout is incredibly cool, splendid splattery logo design/track list & all around beautiful and creepy comic book style art! This is really everything I'm looking for in a grind band, can't think of anything done wrong here, it really looks and sounds like passionate work on every level and the end result is outstanding... Bad news is the band is said to be already over and done!!! I really hate when that happens! It would be truly sad to see such a promising band cease activities so prematurely... I truly hope this is only a hiatus situation... I'd really hate to see Roskopp go so soon! Material for split 7"s with AGENTS OF ABHORRENCE (on Crucificados again) and BLUE HOLOCAUST has already been recorded so that much should hopefully be coming out... Long live Roskopp!

THE DAY EVERYTHING BECAME NOTHING "Invention:Destruction" Cd

(No Escape Records - NE 024)
Release date: 2006
Running time: 30:59

Review:
No surprise here, The Day Everything Became Nothing continues to play their own brand of mid-tempo, heavy, bone-crushing metallic aussie gore-grind on this solid second full length offering... Once again we're treated to a barrage of downtuned chugging guitars, distorted, deep bass tones, midpaced but pretty imposing drumming (with the occasional quick blasting speed-ups), the band's trademark indecipherable low pitch-shifted grunts/growls and the higher shrieking backing vocals intervening in appropriate intervals... Things can sometimes get slightly mechanical sound-sounding at times, but songs nonetheless remain extremely catchy & powerful... Most of the time really sucking you into an obsessive whirlpool of grinding rhythms... Production is pretty immaculate, really clear, nicely heavy and thick; this band's undeniably a very well-oiled machine! Beyond the obvious CBT comparison, I was having recollections of Dead & early Mucupurulent while listening to this too... Some typically Blood Duster-style heavy and chunky groove often creeps up in the songs too I think... Though despite the similar sound, TDEBN has a radically different imagery than any of these bands (more esoteric than sleazy, except if extreme close-ups of what looks like musical instruments turns you on!) The layout and visual aspect of the whole thing also looks very classy and neat as per usual with this band; I like the minimalistic approach to the song titles too... Personally I'm more of a speed fan, but I found myself putting this cd on and just really digging the hell out of it on repeated occasions, which is something getting rarer and rarer these days: this is just simple, tight and all around great stuff... If you're into this type of midpaced, groovy downtuned grind/death metal with an unabashed use of gurgling vocal effects, this is definitely one of the best and slickest examples of the genre...

SUPER FUN HAPPY SLIDE "Rehearsal Demo " Cdr

Release date: 2006
Running time: 8:37

Review:
And to round off my tour of australian grind specimens, I'll finish up with Super Fun Happy Slide... This band is shaping up to be one of my very favorite australian bands (together with Roskopp)... This band's tracks are filled to the brim with raw, energetic, sweaty grindcore vibes and a sick, twisted sense of humor... It's just awesome, quirky, with tons and tons of speed, chock-ful of cool-as-hell headbanging moments and all of this stuff flows down very smoothly... That may sound dumb but the band name is perfectly appropriate, it's everything that's fun about grind pushed to the max... Song-writing is pretty ingenious, the band actually shows some diversity (for a grindcore band) and achieve alot in this short 8 minute span I think... Groovy and pretty mindblowingly fast drumming, blistering vocals, with a nice emphasis on pitch-shifted effects (won't ever get enough of this stuff), and of course mean and nasty grindcore riffage! I'm not quite sure what's in the water in Australia that makes their grindcore band so much cooler but these guys know how to make grind in a different, exciting, refreshing kind of way! The band really works on a fast, razor-sharp thrashing grind level rather than the heavy kind... It really sounds like the band's going back to the basics, taking the true essence and ferocity of holy late 80's Napalm Death style grindcore and mixing it with some cool new thrashing arrangements and nice grooves, still without spoiling the old school grind chemistry that they've got going... These guys are definitely doing something special here I think! I'm a bit late reviewing this demo, so it's already sold out, the good thing is you can now actually download it directly from the band's website... And the band has a full length album set to come out on Bizarre Leprous! So, well... Can't wait for this to come out! I truly hope the band keeps a portion of their raw edge present on this demo for this recording... It's really half the fun of this band, at least for me!!!

MAGGUT/AUTOPHAGIA Split Cd

(Rottenpyosis Records )
Release date: 2006
Running time: 11:43

Review:
This one's short, too short but really sweet... Two of the coolest goregrind bands out there, they're really a perfect match here... You can bet Maggut once again delivers awesome grind in the old Regurgitate style/Gruesome Stuff Relish vein, with a nice sound production and a twist of their own to it as well, just real heavy, basic, fun, bloody and extremely catchy... Maggut is goregrind incarnate with simple songs that just punch you in the face! Big, fat, as-thick-as-a-wall grind riffs, gripping blastbeat/d-beat drumming and roaring and growling pitch-shifted vocals! Not so subtle but unbelievably effective! These 5 songs are from 2005, not sure if they're completely new, I don't think I've heard them before anyhow...
Next is greek one-man wonder Autophagia offering a rawer, more repulsive but equally entertaining dose of gurgling, expeditive, slimy grind here too... The songs are all blazing fast and blazing short blasts of purely sickening and electrifying goregrind! The vocals sound like a zombie vomiting freshly devoured entrails, the guitar sound is flesh-ripping raw and blistering and the drumming grinds its way pretty hard through the songs... Autophagia's vocal styling is so sickening I'm convinced it has the power to provoke puking chain reactions... Complete and total barf-o-rama! This deserves... 4 bloody guts!
