REALIZED "21st Century Terminal World " Cd

(Bloodbath Records)
Release date:
2005
Running time:
23:51

Review:
Ok, I've been stuck in a lazy stance for a while now, all it took to wake me up and start writing reviews again is this goddamn band! Realized is my new god... I honestly don't think any band ever has come as close to the magic of early grindcore as Realized... This band is like early Napalm Death and Extreme Noise Terror of old re-incarnated! The drum sound has the same timber and impact as Mick Harris drums used to have, the extremely grotesque raging growling vocals are just like Lee Dorian (mixed with E.N.T.) and the backing screaming vocals have a "Leave Me Alone" era SxOxB touch to em as well. This cd absolutely rules, straightforward, direct and to the point, grind-blasts and catchy crusty midtempos... The only diversion from the grindcore formula is on track 6 "Sweet Hammerheart" where the band seems to mimic Motorhead in a very tongue-in-cheek way... 24 minutes is pretty damn short but they manage to achieve more than all of all of the pseudo-grind that came out in the past few years combined... Goes without saying that this is an ABSOLUTE MUST-HAVE release! I wanna say japanese grindcore scene is head and shoulders above any grind scene in the world! That's just how I feel right now!

Tracks: 1)Karna Crusade (1:21) 2)Kill Your Will (0:24) 3)Gas Guzzler (1:11) 4)Vengeance Is Mine (0:45) 5)Bad Taste (1:29) 6)Sweet Hammerheart (1:21) 7)Insane (1:23) 8)Natural Bor Mummies (2:05) 9)Scream Baby Scream (0:43) 10)Indipendent Politically (1:56) 11)Essencial-Maltreatment (1:34) 12)Divine Grace (1:08) 13)U-Boat (2:07) 14)Beyond Remedy (0:32) 15)Dominated (0:52) 16)Armagedom (0:26) 17)Witch Twitch (0:35) 18)Bright Blood Redd Sweat (0:51) 19)The Man Who Stole The Sun (1:47) 20)Filthy Pigs Regurgitation (1:21)

CADAVERIC INCUBATOR "Resurgence of Morbidity " Demo Cd-r

Release date: 2005
Running time: 12:47

Review:
Kick-ass demo alert! This finnish band plays some really neat "Symphonies of Sickness" Carcass type gory, grinding death metal... A solidly aggressive sound, some meaty riffs, well-written intricate/versatile songs and an all-around fresh feel... There's even a few fucked-up, squealing guitar solos in there! Just nice and juicy stuff to sink your teeth into! Guitars have a perfect raw thrashing sound, bass has some cool distort, drumming is tight, varied, really boosting the songs... There's a general old school death metal feel in here with the hand-drawn logo and black and white cover artwork (Grave springs to mind) but early Carcass is clearly the main influence... The opening track is an instrumental called "The Cadaveric Incubator Theme" which should be interpreted as the band's own "Genital Grinder"... Cadaveric Incubator follows the "Symphonies of Sickness" formula extremely closely, so much it almost sounds something like The County Medical Examiners at times, especially the splattery squeaking vocals ad pitch-shifted retching growls... And the sickening, cold vibe of the whole thing also reminds me of Haemorrhage on "Emetic Cult" or Pathologist... I know some people seem to hate bands so directly influenced by Carcass, but personally I really don't have a problem with it... I'm not really listening to this type of music for pure originality and vision... The fact is this band seems to put more effort into song-writing than most... Their stuff is catchy, In my opinion, Cadaveric Incubator ranks as some of the best Carcass-inspired music ever! Definitely watch out for them!

Track list: 1)The Cadaveric Incubator Theme 2)Rejoice in Rot 3)Cold in Casket 4)Necrophagous Urge 5)The Undead Fiend 6)Resurgence of Morbidity

COFFINS "Mortuary in Darkness" Cd

(Razorback Records - RR33)
Release date: 2005
Running time: 49:46

Review:
Doom/Death Metal is not exactly my style of predilection (I don't always have the patience for it), and I'm not an expert but after listening to this, I think it's safe to say Coffins is the cream of the crop in this particular genre... The album opens with a slow introductive track: a wall of downtuned, fuzzed out guitar and distorted bass, bathed in creepy feedback... Then there's this really ominous, dark riff ripping through in the middle of the song, that's when I realized I was in for something special! The comparison with Winter made about this band was on the money, that's pretty much it (perhaps mixed with early Cathedral maybe)... The second track speed things up a little though and the band goes into a more raging Autopsy-mode ("Twisted Mass of Burnt Decay" style)... The largest bulk of the album is still very slow-paced, just dirging and totally heavy with only a few mean and sloppy faster rhythmic outbursts from time to time... Vocal-wise, raw, tortured, moans and grunts are in order... The sound of the whole thing is really nice and thick; honestly I can't totally get into the stillness of some of the songs, but that's doom metal for you, this style is just not really in my nature... And in terms of sludgy, atmospheric and incredibly heavy death metal, this album delivers... This is something a little different coming from Razorback Records (Mausoleum being the closest thing to Coffins on Razorback catalogue), but again this is above-average, quality metal. Plus have you seen this stunning Chris Moyen cover artwork? Damn this looks so awesome!

Track list: 1)Black End (6:21) 2)Slaughter Of Gods (4:50) 3)Mortuary In Darkness (5:43) 4)The Unspeakable Pain (8:34) 5)Sacrifice To Evil Spirit (9:06) 6)Torture (7:06) 7)Into The Coffin (Opression) (8:06)

COFFINS "Sacrifice To Evil Spirit" Cd

(Living Dead Society - LDS 002)
Release date: 2005
Running time: 36:59

Review:
Ok, I'm not sure making 2 Coffins reviews coincide like this is such a good idea, but here you go... This is the cd version of the demo by this japanese band. So they play Death/Doom and their songs are really slow, intense & long-winded; With down-tuned, heavy guitars and guttural vocals from beyond the grave... Although this obviously comes with a slightly rougher sound than on their recently released album, this is still perfectly listenable, just with a more obscure edge... Most of the songs are demo versions of tracks now also on their debut cd but it also contains very interesting things like a cover version of Venom's "Warhead" and a couple of live tracks. Only 6 tracks but still almost reaching the 37 minute mark, so yes these songs drag, but in a very punishing way! Recommended to lovers of tortured old school doom metal!

Track list: 1)Black Storm (0:41) 2)Sacrifice To Evil Spirit (6:28) 3)Into The Coffin (10:17) 4)Warhead (5:47) 5)The Unspeakable Pain (7:49) 6)Warhead (5:57)

BIRDFLESH "Live @ Giants of Grind" Cd

(Power It Up)
Release date: 2005
Running time: 36:33

Review:
I usually am not so hot about live recordings, especially when it comes to grind, but this one live cd is quite well-made... All around great for anyone who's curious about how the band sounds live... And well, I'd say they're almost as tight on stage as they are in a studio; this is the same performance as the one on the Power It Up Dvd... This specific show has a technical fuck-up at one point but otherwise these guys nail each of their songs perfectly, with great energy and aggression, and everything with a really very good sound too... Their songs are all very well-oiled machines, furiously catchy and hysterical, this band is simply a rollercoaster live! The pitch-perfect, hard-hitting, blazing fast drumming is the center of the band's strengths, but the ripping guitar riffs and the brutal, wacky vocals are up there too! The band performs with bizarre masks as you can see on the cover (looks like one of em had to take it off because of the heat though, ha!) and I think all 3 members do vocals... What else to add? Oh the setlist is awesome, and I guess you could take a random selection of any Birdflesh songs and end up with a superb setlist anyway... But still, I'm a little bummed cuz it's missing "Brutal Corpse", one of my personal favorites, but I guess you can't have everything! So well anyway, this is probably the single most entertaining thrashing grind bands around these days! Refreshing sense of humor, devastating music... This band continues to kick my ass! Go Birdflesh!

Track list: 1)Gut To Kill (1:13) 2)Night Of The Ultimate Mosh (1:30) 3)The Cannibal And The Corpse (1:52) 4)Carnival Of Slime (0:59) 5)Catmouth (0:38) 6)Master Of Violence (1:40) 7)Anal Misery (1:16) 8)Gore In Gore Out (2:18) 9)Misery Of The Defenceless (2:02) 10)No Fucking Heaven (2:03) 11)Teenage Mutilator (1:43) 12)Deathgore Of The Fleshmaster (2:28) 13)Walk Of Insanity (1:48) 14)Bowelthrasher (1:33) 15)Ken Is Dead (0:31) 16)Victim Of The Grind (0:41) 17)The Rolling Massgrave (2:10) 18)Coffinfucker (2:13) 19)The Evil Pig (1:28) 20)Alive Autopsy (1:46) 21)Fried Eyes (2:10) 22)Destination Salzgitter (1:49) 23)Morbid Jesus (0:42)

ANTIGAMA "Discomfort" Cd

(Selfmadegod Records - SMG 015)
Release date: 2004
Running time:
30:12

Review:
This polish band Antigama plays scathing grindcore, with a pretty good deal of diversity; Grinding, thrashing, rampant, sludgy, dissonant, you name it, still it's always played in a very tight and technical fashion; Somewhat chaotic but very focused too on some level... The band strays away from traditional song structuring, most of the time trying to go in every possible direction at once; It's often hard to tell when a song starts or when it ends, so the whole album kinda blends together as each and every abrupt song leads into one another... Guitar riffs are very tranchant, ranging from typical grindcore to more metallic territories (death, thrash, sludge...), though often with a strange, discordant twist to these styles. Drumming is pretty intricate work, quite fast and versatile... Vocally, this is tortured, distressed screaming kind of stuff... As for influences, I'd say late Brutal Truth & Groinchurn often spring to mind... Overall, this is an intense and unrelenting album, it has to be said it's actually shorter than 30 minutes as the last 10 minute track is mostly silent... Layout is artsy kinda stuff with shots of a dirty factory with a trash-filled floor, pretty nice looking stuff; too bad lyrics aren't included though... Also, there's a divx video clip as extra in there as well, it's mostly footage of insects and larvae with very few actual shots of the band playing... In conclusion, I just think this is one of the finest band out of Poland, probably the best of their type (i.e. more sophisticated grindcore) and well worth checking out.

FUBAR "Justification of Criminal Behaviour" Cd

  (Bones Brigade Records)
Release date: 2004
Running time:
24:29

Review:
So this is the new relentless metallic grindcore sensation from Holland, riffs are real fast, twisted and everything blends together in a weird sort of maelstrom of distorted bass, pounding drumming, shouts, screams and growls... This stuff's blistering, speed-crazed and it rarely slows down. Very Nasum-esque and Agathocles-like at the same time. Alot of the vocals are 'clean' shouting screams sort of like old fast hardcore like Siege & Lärm... Sound production is pretty solid, clear-sounding but retaining a certain rawness. I just think this is a worthy, intense effort that should please crust & grindcore enthusiasts, each and every song crushes and is full of energy and rage... Now, my only gripe is that there aren't any specific moments that really stand out in the cd and make me go really wild... It kinda rambles on and remains at the same level all the time, and it lacks a few truly cathartic moments. Still, this is quality stuff and fans of fast 'socially aware' grind/crust like Yacøpsæ should definitely dig this! The last track is a sort of hardcore techno remix track, nothing special about it but it's still better handled than most grind bands who tried their hand at this in the past... All in all, a mighty fine cd release really...

DIRTY POWER GAME "Figli della vostra catastrofe" Cd

  (Zas Autoproduzioni/Agipunk)
Release date: 2004
Running time:
33:46

Review:
This is pretty good stuff... Raging crust with traces of grind, basicly they use the classic formula, drawing inspiration from good old Discharge, Siege, Extreme Noise Terror, etc... But speeding things up significantly. Being italian and writing their lyrics in italian, I guess they can't escape the comparison to Cripple Bastards as well... Riffing is really typical of crust but still quite blistering, drumming's real fast and dynamic, and the dual vocal assaults are pretty intense, throaty growls and tortured shrieks... Ok, so it's nothing truly amazing, definitely nothing original but nonetheless a very good time if you're heavily into crust; Songs are tight enough and the whole cd stays nicely energetic throughout... There's even a video clip as extra on this cd, you can see the band playing intersected with brutal stock footage of war, riots, police brutality and assorted gore/executions! Heh... I say crust is not that far removed from goregrind!

Tracks: 1)Cappio alla gola (3:09) 2)Niente (1:27) 3)Nero Presente (1:31) 4)Tu parli troppo (2:16) 5)Questo e' il Progresso (2:07) 6)Death Corporation (2:39) 7)Ladri di Volti (2:21) 8)Ameba (2:21) 9)Figli della vostra catastrofe (2:03) 10)Film gia' visto (2:17) 11)Mass Media (1:10) 12)Ethnic war (1:31) 13)DFG part II (2:39) 14)Conosci (2:19) 15)Non capisco (2:28) 16)Up the brain (1:28)

RAILROAD TO APOCALYPSE Split Cd

  (Zas Autoproduzioni)
Release date: 2004
Running time:
58:13

Review:
Here's a split between about 6 bands, none of them really caught my attention in any special way but it was still an OK listen, I'll just make a quick run-though all the bands... Disarm (Tracks 1-8): Thrashing grind from Italy, they use a drum-machine; Tons of blastbeats, metallic riffs, screamy shrieking vocals, etc...
Verge of Reason (Tracks 9-12):
German screamy grind, nicely pissed off but a little too repetitive.
Bud Junkees (Tracks 13-17): Finnish screamy crust/thrash/metal with straightforward riffs and a cool fuzzy sound... Not exactly tight but simple, aggressive and enjoyable.
Alienacja (Tracks 18-20): This is burly polish grind-death... Dual shrieking and demonic growling vocals, totally heavy and brutal stuff... Not mindblowing but definitely one of my fave bands on this cd!
Matka Teresa (Tracks 21-25): Abrasive crust-grind, great fuzzy and distorted sound, explosive mix of high screamy vocals and low roars. Awesome stuff, I like it.
Spleen (Tracks 26-33): Dirty grind with alot of regular metal to it as well... It's alright, songs are too confused, strung together and hard to get into at times though... This one's from Belgium.
All in all, nothing truly memorable in these parts but still, I really liked a couple of these bands...

DOWN THE LINE "Apotheosis is Decline... Decline is Apotheosis " Promo Cd

Release date: 2004
Running time:
21:49

Review:
Here's some decent italian grind... This is a DIY recording but it sounds pretty nice and sludgy the way I like it... It stays moderately fast with crusty riffs, distorted bass, deep guttural growls and sick gurgling. Drumming is pretty cool too, no hyperspeed blastbeats there but this stuff always remains quite catchy... Anyway, it's pleasantly crunchy-sounding and it sounds like a considerate amount of work has been put into song-writing. I just really didn't like the watery vocal effects from the 1st track though. By the way, this band sounds alot like old Gut (especially the sickening vocals), and they have a definite goregrind vibe going; perhaps mixed with some additional Agathocles crust influences. Something else I disliked are the spacy intros and interludes in there, the movie samples are interesting but the electronic/ambient bits feel really out of place, it seems like they were just fillers, personally I'd cut them out. Also, this cd really only contains 3 real grind songs as the fourth track is a 14 minutes techno/ambient track. Verdict: Good but has potential to be alot better if they lose the electronic stuff...

Tracks: 1) Break the Chains (2:33) 2)Path to Nowhere (2:15) 3)Seconds Became Hours (2:21) 4) Maximum Extinction (A New Hope?!) (14:40)

EBOLIE "Elevation Into Disintegration" Cd

(Grindhead Records - GHR002)
Release date:
2004
Running time:
20:16

Review:
This australian band plays Grind/Death with a mish-mash of pretty eclectic influences, part of it is very quirky, kinda like Dying Fetus while the rest is either technical in a Dillinger Escape Plan way or simply barbaric and grindy. These are some very fast-paced, intricate songs; blasting, thrashing but also with quite a few quiet breaks and jazzy arrangements... Plenty of shredding guitar work, funky basslines, tight, fast drumming and even incorporating some groovy techno beats on a couple of songs... Vocal-wise you've got pretty articulate death growls mixed with higher shrieking and screaming. Sound is very clear, with a certain rawness to it, but each instruments sounds nice and detached from each other, you can always hear the cool twirling bass lines very clearly and stuff... The mixing of styles can make the songs seem a little choppy at times though and I wouldn't say any of these songs are truly memorable... The thing is this genre isn't exactly my bag but anyhow these guys are talented, extremely proficient musicians, they're really good at what they do and you can feel the band's enthusiasm through each of their songs... This is really intense stuff, the short humorous samples in between the songs also liven things up in a great way... Lyrics seem to be mostly these guys opinions on society and stuff, but it doesn't seem like they take themselves too seriously! Fans of fast technical grind/death/hardcore should normally dig this...

Tracks: 1)Blood Tapped Skull (2:09) 2)Elevation into Disintegration (3:08) 3)Human Error (1:37) 4)Straight Edgetasy (0:41) 5)Queens of the Scene Age (2:03) 6)Work Forced (2:21) 7)Foetal Grindings (3:44) 8)Rape of Sanity (2:01)
