LAST DAYS OF HUMANITY/LYMPHATIC PHLEGM Split Lp/Picture Disc

(Black Hole - BHP 011)
Release date:
2004

Review:
First off, wow! Killer looking Reek of Putrefaction-esque picture disc... Once again, Last Days of Humanity delivers some intense, raw, blistering, inhuman, gory grind/noise... with totally non-melodic guitar onslaughts, repulsive pitch-shifted gurgling and growling vocals, chaotic blasting drumming. A truly apocalyptic bombardment of distortion and sonorous sewage! This has got to be the rawest Last Days of Humanity material I've heard since some of their early stuff! I wasn't even sure my record player was plugged right, it sounds so dirty! It seems to me that soundwise, perhaps the band has taken a step backwards, with a really hermetic sound now much closer to noisecore like Gore Beyond Necropsy... The side ends abruptly but Lymphatic Phlegm continues on side B with some of their own gore-encrusted pathological grind... Their sound is more than ever ultra raw and flesh-ripping, all the band's trademark elements are there: almost atmospheric grind riffs with tons of reverb, pounding drum machine beats, and vicious retching pitch-shifted vocals... This stuff sounds so obscure it feels like you're watching the bootleg video tape of a snuff movie filmed in an unclean abandonned basement... stuff like illegal surgery performed with rusty scalpels on patients under no anesthesia whatsoever... Be warned this stuff is quite noise-oriented, make sure you take some harshness. Otherwise, this slab of absolute carnage is in my opinion simply a must-have for all raw goregrind freaks!

CARDIAC ARREST "Heart Stopping Death Rot" Mcd

Release date: 2004
Running time: 22:54

Review:
This band is self described as old school death metal influenced by Unleashed & Dismember, and well that's exactly what it sounds like, I'd add "Eaten Back to Life" era Cannibal Corpse & Pungent Stench maybe too... The guitar sound is nice, thick & heavy, drumming is pretty solid and pounding, vocals are rather guttural growls with tortuous accents mixed with some high shrieking. There's a very decent amount of attention given to song writing in there, riffs are well thought out, pretty ripping but not without a touch of melody... This is quite rhythmic and catchy stuff although the band doesn't really base their songs on ultraspeed, so don't expect any blastbeats! Just cool midtempo death metal... Nice artwork by Jake (Tales From Uranus), good sound production... This is a pro-made mini-cd running more than 20 minutes, if you're into that kind of death metal, you can grab this one without thinking twice...

Tracks: 1)Underworld Hate 2)Robbing the Crypts 3)Carnage your Fate 4)Ran into your Grave 5)Rotting Trench Corpse 6)As the Dead Pillage

ENGORGED "Where Monsters Dwell" Cd

(Razorback Records - RR29)
Release date:
2004
Running time: 42:21

Review: Engorged comes back with a vengeance and also a third album to die for! Blasting off their most thrash/death metal-oriented missile yet, with all songs but one well over 4 or even 5 minutes... Implacable riffage, screeching solo's, blistering speed, scathing vocals, gore-encrusted sound, it's all here! Song-writing perhaps feels slightly more cohesive than usual, sometimes almost in a early Bolt Thrower way, but the band more than anything else remains true to their early style, which is a giant crossover of influences, encompassing S.O.D. type thrashing hardcore, the menacing guitar riffing style of Carcass, the intense, in-your-face aggressivity of Extreme Noise Terror, a slight Impetigo-esque edge and most of all, 80's thrash metal! In fact, it's almost like the band constantly brings something new to each of their songs, each time a different baggage from their unhealthy underground metal subculture... "Werewolf Militia" nearly sounds like a Blood Duster song for example, just something in a nasty grinding rock vein... The band's versatile song-writing definitely allows the album to remain fresh and gripping until the end, going in almost every direction possible in the fields of thrashing insanity... Sound prodution is without a doubt their best yet, Engorged never sounded so fucking awesome, everything's perfectly in place, nice and thick, well-balanced but still retaining some of their defining thrashing crunchy rawness. Once again the band also manages to churn out really captivating lyrics about crazy shit like giant squids, aliens, zombies, pirates, werewolves... with inspiration drawn from horror flicks like The Thing, Return of the Living Dead, but also Transformers/GI Joe cartoons and various other obscure stuff I wasn't able to pick up on... Regarding the art, front cover is pretty fun but you really have to see the superb fold-out poster inside... Just unbelievable! A true masterpiece by Dennis Dread! Engorged keeps raising the bar, this is some of their best work, although I'm still keeping their debut cd close to the heart for some reason, but it might be that I'm just weird... I'm giving this one near full marks, that's quite honestly my level of enjoyment... Simply essential.

Tracks: 1) D'compose 2)Stinger 3)Architeuthis 4)The Thing 5)Chaingang 6)Abominus 7)Skull And Crossbones 8)Werewolf Militia 9)ROTLD

EMBALMING THEATRE "Hormones From the Dead" Mcd

(No Escape Records - NE 013)
Release date: 2004
Running time:
16:32

Review:
Here's what's probably the best swiss band since Exucleration... The band delivers a very particular blend of grind and death metal, really basic but effective, with a rotten, heavy old school sound, chain saw-like guitar riffs, pounding drums, low growling but articulate vocals and a great deal of humor too (especially in their selection of movie samples)... As I already said about this band before, they pretty much remind me of Blood, something heavy, roaring, direct and well, brutal but kinda fun at the same time. I really like what they do with the lyrics too, just short, darkly humorous tales inspired by everyday news and real-life horrors... This time, packaging layout and art are also really beautiful, I didn't overly like the art of their first cd on Razorback Records, but this time I think it looks great! This is solid work... definitely worth getting excited about...

Tracks: 1)Hormones From The Dead 2)I Want My Gay Boyfriend To Eat Me Alive 3)Cadaveric Sandcastle 4)Dying Funeral Procession II: Cemetary Carnage 5)Locked Up With Hungry Cannibals 6)Six Little Corpses 7)Hallucinating Genitals-Ejector 8)Contamination With Embalming Fluids 9)Failed And Nailed 10)They Drowned In A Lake Of Blood 11)Burried Alive III: Suffocation In The Sand-Box

UNHOLY GRAVE/ANARCHUS Split Cd

(2+2=5 - 2+2=13)
Release date: 2004
Running time:
31:47

Unholy Grave Review:
Unholy Grave is Unholy Grave, they continue to deliver their own brand of raw and wildly energic, gutsy grindcore, filled with rage, crusty goodness, genius simplicity, infectious groove and above all true sense of fun. As always it also comes with a totally fitting, quite harsh, but really nice and raw sound production! Out-of-whack low guttural roars and high shrieking madness, some insanely catchy grindcore riffs and really slick grinding drumming (with a definite touch of crust too). Quite a lot of catchy short songs (most of em clocking around 1 minute, rarely reaching 2 minutes). And as usual, message lyrics, sometimes really obvious like "Terrorism Sucks" or "Terrorist Must Die"!!! I love that stuff... Straightforward grindcore like that is always refreshing to hear...
Anarchus Review: Very effective, turbulent, thrashing mexican grind with superb bass distortion, merciless guitar riffing, and totally unique vocals: extremely aggressive, almost demonic sounding, midrange shrieking vociferations. I found this band's stuff to be really intense and gripping. The sound is quite heavy but also has a really rough vibe that I absolutely love! Pretty neat packaging layout, two one-of-a-kind grind bands and simply a killer split release in my eyes...

Tracks: Unholy Grave: 1)Selfish insanity 2)Scumbag #2 3)Buried Terror 4)Stench of Politics 5)Terrorist Must Die 6)Terrorism Sucks #2 7)Overprotected Law 8)Our Common Slogan #2 9)Orphaned by Terror 10)Terror After Terror 11)Laughter Behind Terrorism (Outro)

MALIGNANT TUMOUR/SQUASH BOWELS Split Cd

(Obscene Productions - OBP 022)
Release date: 2003
Running time:
55:59

Review:
This one is something of a goregrind classic... It's actually the third re-edition of this split cd, it's got new packaging artwork; I'm the one responsible for the front collage art by the way, except the Squash Bowels logo which was added later... I'm not sure it's such a great cover, but heh, here you go... The cover pictures from the 2 previous editions of the cd are also available inside, they weren't that great anyway, so I don't feel too bad for making this new one... Music-wise we first have Malignant Tumour at the peak of their goregrind career, awesome basic grind songs with a slight crust vibe, some really repulsive gurgling growls... All the songs are really memorable and catchy, just some of the most infectious goregrind ever written. I remember listening to this all the time back when it was first released. The crust aspect, reinforced with covers of some of the most crusty Agathocles songs clearly indicated the things to come from this band (their conversation to mincecore!)
Squash Bowels on their side plays some of the best, most visceral goregrind ever... Harshly gurgled growls, primal shrieking, mean, boisterous guitar riffs and fast smashing drumming all collide together, creating some of the most breath-taking, stormy slabs of goregrind ever recorded! So, yeah if it wasn't already clear, this split cd rules my world!
Now, sorry to say this but I find the bonus tracks on this new split cd unnecessary and unwelcome because they clash with the rest of the material... These are new tracks by present day Malignant Tumour & Squash Bowels which have both gone through drastic line-up/style changes! I appreciate the effort to provide something new but I'd rather have liked to see this split release remain unchanged. Still, this is an absolute must-have especially for those who don't even have the original versions...

Tracks: Malignant Tumour: 1)Maggots in your flesh(D.I. cover) 2)Epiphlitis 3)Acute haemorrhhagical necrosis of pancreas 4)Subacute endocarditis 5)Decubitus 6)Mors praenatalis 7)Pephigus vulgaris 8)Disease of oral cavities 9)No use.. hatred(AG cover) 10)Pertussis 11)Diphteria 12)Idiopathic colitis ulcerosa 13)Mucormycosis of gastrointestinal tract 14)Parasitical cysts 15)Dysenteria bacillaris 16)Embryopathia 17)Purulent attack 18)Reason to hate 19)Necrotic urocystitis with ammoniacal fermentation 20)Putrefaction decomposition 21)Impetigo contagiosa 22)Intravascular diseminated coagulate 23)Ingrowing of the alien things in the body 24)Pulmonary collapse 25)Go fucking nihilist(AG cover) 26)Waterhouse - Friderichsen syndrome

ABORTION "Gonna Be Worse" Cd

(Obscene Productions - OBP 059)
Release date: 2003
Running time:
38:47

Review:
Slovakian grind/hardcore/thrash/death hybrid... This album is blunt and very speed-oriented but definitely not hyperblasting all the time... There's more of a thrashing approach to song writing than just pure grind, and of course it's not without some wicked bursts of blistering violence here and there. Vocals are a large variety of low growls, some backing raspy sneering, and even alot of low, hardcore type shouts. The lyrics are printed so I tried to keep up with them but it didn't seem like the vocals actually followed the words at all... Anyway, the most obvious influences I picked on are Extreme Noise Terror for some of the vocals and riffs, the hardcore side of Agathocles/Cripple Bastards for the straightforwardness/directness of it all and also Repulsion for some of the old school thrashing grind vibe... Overall, this is an agreeable cd, the band delivers this stuff with assurance and determined strength, in a nice thrashing and chunky way, the sound production is clear and well-defined... Although maybe the band is missing a little bit of raw visceral energy and a few more memorable riffs to become really effective... Anyway, if you like Agathocles on their more crusty hardcore material you might dig Abortion too... Lyrically this is socially aware type fare, just the band stating their opinion on various things... but the band doesn't come off as too serious, there's still a bit of humor in there too... And well, that's about it, just an enjoyable production!

Tracks: 1)Dead Laughter 2)Rebels Getting Older 3)Cancer Wins 4)I’m For Sale 5)The End Is Near 6)Serial Killer Star 7)Not Talk to Communists 8)False Babble 9)A Slave Or A Man? 10)Money Is Your God 11)Keep It Silent! 12)I’m Not Permanently Sick 13)Slut City 14)Pig Power 15)Icky Ficky 16)We All Are Snakes 17)Fucking Ignorant 18)Instant Life 19)Power Of Humour 20)Last Drink 21)Heavy Mental 22)N.W.O. 23)Filth

FLESHLESS "Sensual Death Immitation" Cd

(Obscene Productions - OBP 056)
Release date: 2003
Running time:
55:59

Review:
Fleshless plays melodic brutal death metal and while I'm not a huge fan of this style I'll admit the band is very good at what they do... This is just sharp. Really precise and thrashing guitar riffing, amazingly tight drumming, tons of fast blastbeats and doublebass stuff. The vocals are throaty, guttural growls... Sound production is top notch... Some of this stuff is incredibly catchy, everything is really technical and flawlessly performed but yeah, it's still too cold for me, I can't totally get into this kind of death metal... But anyway, if bands like Origin are your thing, you might be be into this one as well... Otherwise you've got some great artwork throughout the booklet and in general this release seems to have been put together with great care! Strictly recommended to fans of technical and melodic brutal death metal...

Tracks: 1)Torture Me 2)Sensual Death Immitation 3)Scream of Decapitated 4)Incinerated 5)Parasites 6)Disconnected 7)Surrounded by Hell 8)Survival Extortion 9)Foetal Purulent

SQUASH BOWELS "No Mercy " Cd

(Obscene Productions - OBP 057)
Release date: 2004

Running time: 30:30

Review:
"No Mercy" is yet another impressive Squash Bowels effort, with its bone-crushing combination of heavy gore-grind savagery and more rigorous brutal death metal-type song structuring... It kills. It goes without saying, but you'll find songs made of alot of assertive, grinding and blasting assaults... Still, songs are not without some flashes of groove too... The grind parts are quite often broken down by undeniably catchy riffs and hooks, among various other cool things that'll make your blood boil. In terms of sound, guitars are way downtuned, drumming sounds nice and thick, vocals are strictly of the guttural kind, part growls, part out-of-this-earth effected gut-wrenching roars (I really like the fact that the band still opts for a distorted approach to vocals)... Sound production is quite powerful too! The opening title song is especially awesome I must say, truly memorable and exhilarating with a really bad-ass riff kicking in right in the middle of things! I'm not sure if there's such a thing as a polish sound, but Dead Infection most definitely springs to mind while listening to some of the guitar and drumming patterns... The execution and downtuned sound is also quite similar to a more grinding Neuropathia... which is only natural with 2 of the 3 current Squash Bowels members actually being from Neuropathia! Some of the songs also have a feel close to Extreme Noise Terror, perhaps with an additional, very particular and weird, gored up vibe... Even though this stuff is miles away from the wild Squash Bowels early period in terms of style, I think this is just about equally great, only in a different way... The album really feels complete and whole and all in all this is assuredly one of the major grind releases this year to me. Oh and I haven't checked it out yet but the cd is also supposedly packed with alot of video bonus material... In conclusion: absolutely not something to miss!

Tracks: 1)No Mercy 2)Garrotte 3)Vulture Ritual 4)Guillotine in Lunapark 5)Squabble 6)Flesh Grinder 7)Dead Stumble 8)Human Extinction 9)Splinter Off Blood 10)Saint Father Paedophile 11)Inclement Instructor 12)Blood Supply 13)Face in Cowpox 14)Ufo-rder

NEGLIGENT COLLATERAL COLLAPSE "Paranormal Nanodivision" Cd

(Obscene Productions - OBP 055)
Release date: 2003
Running time: 32:37

Review:
This is a grinding czech maëlstrom delivered with very clear sound and a pretty special sense of humor. Negligent Collateral Collapse didn't change much over the years, their music is quite blastbeat oriented but not without its share of groovy variations and punchy rythms; I don't know how much of the drumming is electronic or human, but it sounds natural enough... Anyway this stuff is still fiercely blasting away for the most part. Guitars are of the very downtuned kind and the low guttural gurgling vocals are perhaps the closest thing to a pig getting slaughtered I've heard, ever! Deranged porcine squealing and growling all the way! Song structures are very controlled, just not wild in any way... On the other hand, there's a considerable deal of humor distilled throughout the album that clearly shows that the band is just having fun with their songs... take for example the fake ending on one of the songs or the final nod to Slayer's "Reign in Blood"...And the movie samples are also used as a comic effect. Overall, this is a very enjoyable cd, transpiring much more positive energy than usual for this kind of bands. The lyric's scientific subject matter, rarely tackled in the genre is another of the band's original aspects too, I'm not certain any of this stuff actually makes sense, but here you go... Packaging art is really slick and this is simply an all around well-crafted cd, definitely worth checking out...

Tracks: 1)Paranormal Nanodivision 2)Polymer Masters 3)Silicon Chip 4)NC Drunk signal C 5)Technology Spells Doom... 6)Second Implant 7)His-and-hers implants 8)Blue And White /ver_ 03/ 9)Pain NASA (# NCC-2-1244) 10)Glass Capsule (the security vulnerability CVE-2000-0169) 11)Cockroach's Motor Neurons 666 Hz microprocessor 12)Yacooza /NCC_veR/ 13)Implanting Lego 14)Anything Could Be Controllable Via Implants 15)Natural Abilities
