PUTRESCENCE "Mangled, hollowed out and vomit filled" Cd

(No Escape Records)
Release date:
2004
Running time: 29:58

Review: This fresh new band is a really pleasant surprise... I didn't even know this band existed last week, but this cd is one the very best thing I've heard this year! The style here is way heavy Gore/grind tinged with an old school death metal kind of feeling of the best effect. Songs are superbly flowing, with some really thick extremely downtuned guitar riffs, swift but hard-striking drumming, deep guttural growling vocals and backing manic shrieks... The band sounds totally ferocious but still retains some nice refined guitar work and skilful drumming... Their sound has a suffocatingly putrid texture to it so Putrescence as a band name is definitely fitting... There's a great deal of grinding drive here too but I won't say this is one hundred percent pure grind, song structures and composition work are relatively elaborate, the band also focuses on some heavier, sludgier parts from time to time... I must say this really made me think of Hemdale right away, and I mean that as a compliment! Putrescence's got the same kind of cool edge Hemdale used to have... It also made me think of a few other bands like Hideous Mangleus, old Sanity's Dawn and Bodies Lay Broken... Definitely up there with these awesome bands anyway... Lyrically this is some very cool, sickening gore with a few original and humorous touches here and there to keep it interesting. I think I've seen the gory front picture being used somewhere else already... Still, this is all quality gore! Simply a killer release! Slick layout as can always be expected from No Escape records... I must say this record company definitely has the best taste in choosing their bands... And yeah, definitely my new personal favorite band from Canada too! Absolute Must-Have!

GENERAL SURGERY/MACHETAZO Split 7" Ep

(Goryfied Productions - GD 02)
Release date:
2004

General Surgery Review:
New General Surgery is all very true to its old self with the sole exception of now being boosted by some infinitely more bombastic grinding drumming, analogue to Nasum and the likes... This is seething grindcore in an old-school swedish death metal Dismember-style wrapping sound, with basic and straightforward compositions, imposing, heavily downtuned guitar riffing, low grunting roars and backing malignant shrieks often forming great dual flesh-ripping choruses in the grand spirit of early Carcass... So yeah General Surgery still got it, and this is mighty fantastic gore/grind material to my humble ears... Lyrics seem even more humorous and oddball than usual, I guess there's only so much you can do with the pathological concepts... but yeah, these are still a very fun read! Damn, General Surgery is really back! I must say I'm all stoked for their upcoming full-length album...

Machetazo Review: It's these spanish grinders extraordinaires turn to serve up 3 tracks of some of their finest incisive grindcore/old school death metal... These guys are more than ever at the top of their game... Viciously thrashing guitar riffs, a sweet, crepitating bass tone, low snarling grunts, eructations and shrieks, bludgeoning drumming... Some really churning, well-rounded songs, fresh and enticing grinding rhythms; Their sound still has this really cool, obscure and percussive raw edge... Some very neat old european horror movie interludes heightening the band's morbid edge... Definitely one of the top Grind acts in the whole world right now for me! The band seems to have a third member now, which is good to know... This all-too-short ep left me hungry for more, there's another upcoming full length cd I can't wait to hear...

OPENWOUND "Stranglehold e.p." 7" Ep

(Goryfied Productions - GD 01)
Release date:
2004

Review: Openwound... This was the band before The Kill and let me tell you this stuff was already just as mindblowing... Quite simply some of the very best grindcore in recent years! It's really a pity both bands split up (still hope Roby gets another band going soon!)... Ok, to describe this a little, Openwound used to play bang-up, blistering grind, going at furious hyperfast speeds, with violently assertive riffing backed up by merciless drumming; The grand majority of vocals are virulent high-pitched shrieking but allied from time to time to some lower, abrasive roars they formed some really furious dual vocal assaults... Musically, this is probably more diverse than The Kill, with some very quirky tempo variations, breakdowns and songs enhanced with a tons of thrashing, groovy or even nearly rock n' roll arrangements... This shit just moves at an insanely fast pace and is full of surprising twists and turns... Just spontaneous, pulsating, implacable grinding genius! I could gush about this some more but I figure you probably get the picture by now... Just a resplendent band, and a very well-made, recommended ep!

MIXOMATOSIS/DEMISOR/GORED FACE "Night of the Living Grinders" 3-Way Split Cd

(Grindmind Records - GRM002)
Release date:
2004
Running time: 34:52

Mixomatosis Review: Opening this split release is spanish band Mixomatosis... This is the very first time I hear some of their stuff, I'm not completely won over, but this is some cool junk... Nice and raw gore grinding death metal piercing through a sizzling, filthy, muddied down sound quality, some catchy mid-tempos, with barked guttural growls and very high pitched weirdo yelling... The vibe is comparable to early Impetigo and Brujeria (because of the vocals being delivered in spanish language with the same kind of grotesque roaring voice...), although Mixomatosis is altogether more messy, noisy, dirty and angry than either of those...
Demisor Review: Things start to get alot hairier with this side... Demisor is definitely the best band on this split release and their material here doesn't disappoint, this is some really heavy, really intense grindcore with occasional touches of violent groove, just really fast and brutal but never neglecting to inject some grabbing rhythmic changes... This is definitely the kind of stuff where you get caught up in the violence. Really downtuned guitars, fast crushing drumming, low guttural menacing growls and vicious midrange shrieking... Sound quality varies slightly from song to song, this might contain some different recordings, it's pretty dirty but sufficiently heavy, it doesn't detract at all from the band's powerful and aggressive energy... Anyway, great job with these songs...
Gored Face Review: Really savage and primitive, assaultive Us goregrind! Radical, stressed out grinding drumming, animalistic growls, blustering and dissonant fierce guitar thrashings... This reminds me of Rotting Flesh, although there's maybe a slight Autopsy-type death metal added influence on some on the riffs there... but this is still really bestial grind for the most part, a lot of blasting speed and sledgehammer subtlety. A rough sound production that makes up for an even more aggressive and blunt listening experience... Regarding the cd layout, it's pretty cool with imagery taken from Romero's zombie trilogy... Night of the Living Dead poster on the front, and Dawn of the Dead/Day of the Dead stills inside and on the back... Definitely a very nice release!

NOISECORE FREAK "Experiments from the Rust Factory" Cd

(Deadsix Communications - DEAD6-02)
Release date:
2004
Running time: 30:30

Review: This isn't new Noiscore Freak material, but stuff actually recorded previously to the very good "Corner Itch Theory" Cd ... This release is less emphasied on the ambient experimental aspects and more focused on these kind of straightforward, frenzied grind songs; It still has quite a few of these weird industrial interludes but only in a smaller quantity. Despite the evocative band name this stuff is not actually noisecore to be really exact, it's more like intense, turbulent electronic/industrial grindcore... something quite chaotic but still contained within certain limits, I'd say that's actually pretty structured work; admittedly it has a sort of restless, schizophrenic nature with a lot of jerking and twitching cadences, some obsessively repetitive sound loops, constant, abrupt changes but in the end this is still just grind with the simple agenda to destroy, be sonic and as aggressive as possible... Some churning highspeed tempos, rapid riffing, throaty grunts and raspy higher screaming vocals... Definitely my type of stuff, quite original and fresh and with its own characteristic style... Sound is pretty solid but with a rough edge of course... Some nice and bleak imagery and also pretty twisted lyrics. A well-crafted release...

NEURAL TUBE DEFECTS "Educhate" Cd

(Nuclear Abominations - NA 004)
Release date:
2004

Review: Italian sort of industrial gore-grind-noise-metal... It bears a few resemblance with Libido Airbag/Nunwhore Commando 666 and also Decomposing Serenity mixed with electronic stuff similar to something out of a horror movie synthetiser score... Some pretty raw and noisy thrashy guitar riffs, prominent distorted bass lines, sickening pitch-shifted gurgling growls and belches... This stuff's got alot of interesting and noisy and bizarre sound textures, but unfortunately overall it remains pretty flat, it just fails to be catchy at all... The programmed drums really don't bring any energy or grinding drive, it's more like a ruminating feeling... what the techno influences inject are some interesting experimental atmospheres at times, but unfortunately it sounds like padding between the songs more than anything else... they really make the songs seem to drag endlessly instead of bringing them out... I don't think this is a bad band, but it really lacks intensity and a better sense of rhythm and pace... The way it is right now it sounds a bit uninvolving and... just sort of empty... it just doesn't really work. Also some of the techno parts are honestly some really really bad techno... I can get into some brutal techno, but not into this kind of bad techno, sorry... Anyhow, artwork and layout are top notch... Maybe if you're up for some really eerie non-conventional industrial grind, you might enjoy this cd... but I'm sorry to say I can't really get into it personally.

XXX MANIAK "Harvesting the Cunt Nectar" Cd

(Red Candle Records)
Release date:
2004
Running time: 19:51

Review: Very slick-sounding, pulverizing drum-machine grind-death... Guitar riffs are way downtuned but with a definite chugging death metal vibe quite similar to Mortician. However, songs here are a lot briefer and much more expeditious/grind-oriented, Fuck... I'm Dead, Agoraphobic Nosebleed or Maniac Killer often comes to mind... There's a definite emphasis on blistering speed, complete with sonic blast beats and blazing fast riffs, all very solidly delivered... Regarding vocals, that's a pretty wide variety of vocal types, from low death growls to high shrieks and backing effected vocals... It also features stints by alot of different guest vocalists... Sound production is top notch, thoroughly heavy and clear... Oh and the music is also meshed with some stimulating intro samples, totally in line with XXX Maniak's sick and twisted porno gore concept... Subject matter is definitely nasty and depraved. The silly humor and slickness of the whole thing maybe takes away some of the shock value... this stuff is presented in such a glossy way that it just seems so much more acceptable that way; Also, some of the intros seem to have been created especially for this cd, which I think increases the jokey vibe even more... Still this is material almost on the level of the Meatshits on the sleaze-o-meter, rest assured, it's really vile... In short, some very effective and catchy crap for sure... Cover art is as glossy and deranged as the musical content...

Tracks: 1)Lost Inside Yourself 2)Death Porn 3)Sprayed By Cans Of Shit 4)Gorebortion 5)Tuan Tran: Murderer/Rapist? 6)Uncompromising Sexual Harassment At Work, Home, And In Public 7)Harvesting The Cunt Nectar 8)Skeleton Toucher 9)Desperately Craving Anal Attention 10)Fist-Fuck Death Grip 11)Buying A DVD Player (Then Raping You With My Old VHS Tapes) 12)Albukkake, NM 13)A Knife Called Pussylicker 14)Prowler In The Shower 15)The City And The World 16)Catholic Slut 17)2nd Ranked Phallic Offense VS. 26th Ranked Vaginal Defense 18)Eat Your Entrails And My Kult Ejaculant 19)The Moment You Start To Enjoy It, It’ll Get Worse 20)Priest In The Preschool 21)Semen For The Basement Slaves 22)Slut Killer 23)Baptized In Semen And Steel 24)Sunrise Is A Lie 25)Failing To Contain The Gore Fountain 26)Fucked By Lightning 27)If I Dismember Your Cunt, Are You Still A Virgin? 28)Only Those Who Eat The Feces Will Be Spared 29)Tangible Expression Of Hate 30)Diagnosis - Zombie Slut Rape

RABID & FUNEROT are... Insane for Brains - Split Cdr

(Fecal Matter Discorporated - FMD-048)
Release date:
2004
Running time: 24:47

Rabid Review: I think Rabid gets better with each passing release... They're not totally tight yet, but I think there's a lot of good chemistry at work here, they're just enjoyable to listen to... So, to put it simply this is total early Impetigo worship! Alot of bands are influenced by Impetigo but I think Rabid is the one of the few bands I've heard that captures the wild early Impetigo feeling right: a fun blend of old school death metal and early grindcore and some major punk/hardcore influences on top of everything... Clearly, there are also some additional Impaled/Ghoul influences in their sound too... Mid-paced compositions with grinding parts here and there, nice and tight percussions, dissonant guitars, grunted and shrieked vocals... Just tight little songs, with pretty memorable riffs, light-hearted humor and cool horror intros (Bad taste, Braindead, Buio Omega, Day of the Dead, Jungle Holocaust, etc...)
Funerot Review: Funerot plays tight-as-fuck thrash/death metal; Songs are actually pretty intense and expeditious in the way of grindcore but musically I'd say this is prominently thrash metal 1980's style! I think musicianship is just stunning here, with guitarists shredding their way through the songs with disconcerting ease, some totally flesh-ripping riffs, a few cool solis and really tight song writing... This is really dynamic music, with stuff happening all the time... Songs are kept real short, so it never gets dull and always moves on to the next thing. Just very ingenious and refreshing type of stuff... I love the sound on this recording too, it's definitely cleaner and heavier than the Funerot material I had previously reviewed in these pages, but it still maintains a raw edge necessary to the genre the band plays... This is also a really beautifully layed out cdr, very well-designed and with some really cool art...

Tracks: Rabid: 1)Bad Taste 2)Fetid Slime 3)Necromance 4)Hello Aunt Alisha 5)Last cannibal World 6)Cannibals Don't Eat Clowns (Because they taste funny!) 7)My Lai (Impetigo)
Funerot: 8)De-Liver-Ed (intro) 9)Catastrophic Min melt 10)Dead From Overhead 11)The Electrocutioner 12)C.A.P.L.I.M.P. 13)Hail the Throne 14)The Bloodshakes (outro)

DESENSITISED/PEACH HER Split Cd

(Grodhaism Prods - GR0008)
Release date:
2004
Running time: 32:39

Desensitised "Bought Beauty" Review: Desensitised from Netherlands plays some fine, thrashing Death Metal... This is executed with precision, in the spirit of Carcass "Necroticism"/"Heartwork" era... but the way songs are structured is far more basic and straightforward... Maybe a little more like Blood in that respect... This cd boosts some well-rounded, clear-cut songs, mid-paced but with some speedings from time to time, guitars chugging some catchy trenchant riffs, and finally led by raspy and aggressive, intelligible vocals sometimes allied to very cool backing low roars (recalling Carcass again...). Just very proficient and effective metal... Sound is straight and clear kind of stuff, nothing truly heavy, but still sharp... Lyrics are mostly about down-to-earth real-life topics, sometimes pretty disturbing, especially on the first song "Stone Rain" which is written about death sentence by the throwing of stones (!!!) Features Susan on guitars, girls playing in brutal bands is always great to hear! All the tough girls out there go form a band!
Peach Her "Gastrophobia" Review: French band... It features guests from bands like Inhumate and Blockheads, but don't expect anything remotely grindcore here... This is some extreme hardcore/metal, pretty thrashy, with thumping guitars, some prominent and twisted bass lines, midtempo rhythms and drumming with a lot of groove... Confidently performed, some pretty heavy songs... Ok, I'd say there are a few death metal influences in there, although this is all sort of progressive... I saw this stuff described as "deathcore", I don't really know anything about this genre so I'm gonna have a hard time citing similar bands... The closest thing I could compare it to is perhaps Massacra "Sick" era with more hardcore in it... Sound production is not totally full-fledged but still all very powerful and clear...

Tracks: Desensitised: 1)Stonerain 2)Smugness 3)Meltdown Mutation 4)Black Gold 5)Bought Beauty

MORTUARY HACKING SESSION/GRUESOME MALADY Split Cd

(Last House on the Right Records/Vomit Noise Productions - HAUS014/VNP 006)
Release date:
2004
Running time: 26:38

Mortuary Hacking Session Review:
This I think is a spoof female goregrind band... Musically it's pretty chaotic and thrashing metal, mostly moderately paced with a few abrupt blastings and sickening vocals, nice sounding pitch-shifted belched growls mixed with splattery squeaks. The guitar work mostly sounds like some catchy thrash metal (parts of it are even sort of technical) and then here and there some non-sensical blasting noisecore/grind will kick in, pretty similar to Decomposing Serenity in a way... The sound is all around very clear, the drums are programmed and pretty catchy overall...

Gruesome Malady Review: This split cd gets even weirder with Gruesome Malady from India, they're almost like an abstract goregrind band; they have one of the most bizarre sound I've heard. The overall feel is almost doom metal-like except faster and more chaotic... the rest is a really puzzling mixture of "Reek of Putrefaction", Exit 13, and the weirdest Trey Azagthoth guitar solo you can think of. Drumming is a bit messy, I'm not sure if it's programmed or not... Vocals are alot of fun, they come with the most watery and splattery effect I've ever heard in my life... Sounds a bit like somebody tossing their lunch underwater... You'll also find a few fun (although a bit overlong) intros from cool Eurotrash movies like Fulci's New York Ripper, spanish zombie movie Tomb of the Blind Dead and more... If you're into strange grind, you should eat this up... The Cannibal Holocaust-inspired cover art was made by yours truly...

Tracks: Mortuary Hacking Session: 1)If only I Could Sew 2)A Straw to reach for your Skull Juice 3)Slices of Delicious Eyes 4)My Turn to Cut
Gruesome Malady: 1)Degraded and Defiled 6)El Ataque Delos Muertos Sin Ojos (instrumental) 7)Crypts of Ichor / Frenzied Evisceration of Viscous Excrescence 8)Mangled by Rodents
