GENERAL SURGERY Demos - Double 7" Ep

(Nuclear Abominations - NA 002)
Release date:
2004

Review: This vinyl re-edition of General Surgery demos is one brilliant idea. Is it necessary introducing the finest Carcass rip off band ever? Alright since I've got nothing better to do... they're what Fulci is it Romero, an excellent rip-off, perhaps better than the original in some ways, just much more basic and straightforward. If these demos have a crappy sound, musically this is out-and-out excellence. Sound production improves slightly after the first one which is pretty crude, but not by much really... Ok, don't be fooled... all these demos only feature songs later re-recorded for the "Necrology" ep, the first demo definitely has songs from "Necrology", they're just under different early titles... So, all the songs here are simply dirty sounding demo versions of all the general Surgery classics. And honestly, it's awesome to have this stuff collected on vinyl... It comes as 2 discs, first disc with each side containing a different demo, and the second disc containing the third demo on 2 sides... The packaging artwork is a real beauty to behold, a terrific collage of demo artwork, flyers, old band pictures, hell of a gorgeous layout really... Musically, you probably know this already, but anyway this is early Carcass worship with extremely downtuned Dismember-style thick guitars, putrid shrieks and bestial growlings, dynamic guitar riffs, catchy tempos, a wrapping swedish death metal feel... and an absolute perfection in gore-grind song-writing! These songs never get old nevermind how many times you play them. Yeah, these demos have a more chaotic feel, but the rough sound production fit the songs beautifully. Even though "Necrology" does these grind song jewels alot more justice these recordings are a different kind of excitment; a pure, obscure underground tingly kind of feeling. A truly magnicient re-edition and a must-have for all!

SPLATTERHOUSE "The House That Dead Built" Cd

(Razorback Records - RR26)
Release date:
2004
Running time: 34:04

Review: Here is one mighty entertaining album... Gore/death metal with a grinding edge in now classic Oregon style, by that I mean quite close to for example Frightmare... However Splatterhouse's music is also allied to a touch of german splatter-death/grind type heaviness (Dead & early Sanity's Dawn)... This is all around superbly handled musically, with a very rich and varied composition work pretty much on the level of Exhumed, Impaled or Necrony... It's got downtuned and solidly thrashing guitar riffs, some nice, diverse and punishing drum work, excellent dual vocals (deep abrasive growls à la early Grave versus throaty shrieks similar to Carcass and Sanity's Dawn again). Song-writing is very consistent and with pretty inventive things for the genre too, tracks are all quite memorable; the band's not afraid of writing long-running songs, with successions of rhythmic changes from heavy, slow, midtempo parts to blasting or blazing fast parts, stuff that really remains catchy and surprising throughout, with some solid arrangements, and even a couple of smooth guitar solis... Very strong song-writing and musicianship then... If you've already heard the Split Cd w/ Gruesome Stuff Relish, I think the material here is slightly more elaborate and thought out, just really good work... For the rest, this is pure tongue-in-cheek Razorback-style horror fun... displaying many a facet of their gore/horror culture, from the band name Splatterhouse taken from that old video game to a slick photo collage of worldwide horror movie stills & comic book art... Also some very well-picked intros, perfect morbid mood-setters or just effective humorous touches (one of the tracks even has samples from Futurama!) In conclusion, a high standard offering from Splatterhouse... And a hearty recommendation from me!

Tracks: 1)Baptizing the Dead 2)Confessions of a Grave Robber 3)Mutilator 4)They Came From Within 5)Coffin Birth 6)Warmest Place to Hide 7)Night of the Creeps 8)Somewhere in the Yard 9)Hillside Stranglers (Dahmer Cover)

THE HORROR HIVE - Razorback Records Compilation

(Razorback Records - RR28)
Release date:
2004
Running time: 72:23

Review: I remember the first Razorback release ever was also a compilation cd, was that really 5 years ago? Time sure flies by real quick... Anyway, here's an example of a label compilation cd done well, a nice blend of exciting and new unreleased material by Engorged, Fondlecorpse, Lord Gore, Embalming Theatre, Funerot, F.K.U. and Impaled, past material summing up the whole Razorback catalog roundly and finally material by unsigned bands closing the deal in a very cool way (take a listen to Flagitious Idiosyncrasy in the Dilapidation & Maggut, you'll know what I mean!)... This cd is also a good sampler for things to come from Razorback as it also contains material from new and coming bands like Zombie Ritual (cool thrash/death metal, but with a different vibe compared to other Razorback bands) or Coffins... Just an impressive collection of worldwide musical sickness, great tracks by some great bands, alot of japanese bands in there too for some reason... You'll also find a short noisy blur by noisecore legend Piles of Eggs in there, it kinda sticks out like a sore thumb but still it's funny as hell! And then it's also got cool Dennis Dread art and some very amusing liner notes... So, yeah... a very cool compilation... Definitely worth checking out!

BIRDFLESH "Alive Autopsy/Trip to the Grave" Cd

(Razorback Records - RR25)
Release date:
2004
Running time: 42:37

Review: What we have here is the digital re-edition of these swedish psychos' Lp "Alive Autopsy" and the earlier Ep "Trip to the Grave"... To me, Birdflesh is simply one of the tightest Repulsion/Terrorizer/Macabre hybrid I've ever heard, some insanely fast, basic but also really skilful and effective grindcore with a thrashing metal vibe and a prominent sick sense of humor. Each song is like a tight little package, you know what you're in for, head-first moshing grind, with clear-cut, grinding and thrashing guitar riffs, solid and extremely catchy drumming between pounding midtempos and blazing fast grind-tornados, raging dual vocals with aggressive, roaring shouts answering to vehement but playful screams (plus every now and then some totally whacked-out clear singing thrown in as well)... All delivered with assuredly great grindcore savoir-faire! The sound production on the "Alive Autopsy" material is perfect in my eyes, nothing too fancy, nothing too raw, just one hell of a heavy, clear and grinding sound with an old school vibe. The "Trip to the Grave" material sounds slightly rawer but it's the first Birdflesh release I've ever heard so it remains my favorite Birdflesh material ever anyway! Don't forget the lyrics because they really triple the fun that is Birdflesh, completely over-the-top, hysterical tales of absurd gore and twisted madness... there's a hidden track in there too, it's a cover version of the unmistakenable SxOxB's song "Vicious World"... and it's totally mind-blowing too! Anytime you feel crappy I say just put on some Birdflesh and it'll put you back into shape...

Tracks: 1)Barbarian Bar 2)Electrodeath 3)Skyrat 4)Kick On The Cross 5)Victim Of The Anal Abscess 6)Alive Autopsy 7)Bullchrist 8)Repulsive Regurgitation 9)The Gay And The Demon 10)Crazy Island 11)Loser Of The Universe 12)The Return Of The Blasphemous Birdgorrila 13)Mongolized 14)Ken Is Dead 15)Motorbed 16)I Will Always Hate You 17)Murderfire 18)The hungry vagina 19)Trip to the grave 20)Burgers of the fucking dead 21)Land of the sick 5)Walk of insanity 22)Mutilation boogie & masturbation blues 23)Sweat of the old man 24)Teenage mutilator 25)The brutal corpse 26)More garlic

ANTIGAMA/THIRD DEGREE/HERMAN RAREBELL "The World Will Fall Soon And We All Will Die" Split Cd

(Selfmadegod Records - SMG 011)
Release date:
2004
Running time: 26:53

Antigama Review: This is quasi-grindcore with a pronounced metal vibe, meaning it's intense but also intricate and with a lot of heavy parts and stuff. The grind parts are really blistering and heated kind of stuff, but song structures are made in a more complex manner than simple grind, drumming is pretty fucking tight especially on the hyperspeed parts but also quite diversified, guitar work is very dynamic too, quite elaborate but also intentionally dissonant at times with overlapping distortion and noise and things like that. Vocals are quite aggressive, rather on the screamy side... It reminds me of mid-period Brutal Truth for the thrahsing intensity and maybe Dillinger Escape Plan for the technicity aspects... Sound is all very clear and heavy, but it keeps a slightly raw edge overall. Good stuff.
Third Degree Review: This is some more very well executed, straightforward aggressive grind with intense, fast rythms (no truly blasting parts but still all very speed-oriented), mostly high-pitched shrieking, and sometimes some dual shrieks/growls moments... Riffing is often typical old school grind/crust fare but the particular song structuring and the gripping relentless beats give it a more mesmerising feel, kind of stroboscopic or something... It reminds of Abstain and maybe Disrupt, but Third Degree definitely has its own special special feel.
Herman Rarebell Review: Very good grind with some particularly wild and grinding guitar riffing, blasting drums, assaultive dual vocals, perhaps the most brutal and basic band on this split release, I'm thinking of Retaliation mixed with The Kill, the sound is nice and heavy too... In the end, this split cd is superb in every way, not a single boring moment in it, some really fresh bands, good sound production, very slick-looking cover art/layout! It's a winner...

Tracks: Antigama: 1)Imperfection 2)Search 3)Questions 4)In A Room With Blue Walls 5)Repeatedness 6)Snuffbabe
Third Degree: 7)Badpans 8)The Tolerance 9)Awareness 10)Fill The Rest Yourself

EMBRYONIC CRYPTOPATHIA "Goresplattered Hymns of Maggot Infested Cavities" Demo Tape

(No Life Records - No Life 06)
Release date:
2004

Review: Ok, yes this is a really good demo, the best demo I've heard in a long while... truth is I haven't listened to that many demos lately but still... Embryonic Cryptopathia plays some very nasty, basic and visceral Goregrind. It's played by members of some of the vilest Us drum machine grind acts (Psychosadistic Haterapist, Erotonomicon & Microphallus) ... Let me describe this the only way I know how... by comparing it to other bands... The guitar riffs sound like stuff from the first Dead Infection demo, played with a gut-wrenching fury akin to early Squash Bowels ("Dead" demo & Split w/ Malignant Tumour) and grinding and chaotic song structures really resembling those of Last Days of Humanity... All of this sprinkled with a bit of the old Retaliation sound back when they were into gore... Just really exquisite, grabbing goregrind with a quite heavy but still rancid/obscure/raw demo sound! It's got everything: exciting stereotypical old school pathological goregrind song titles, a killer band name... Embryonic Cryptopathia! and don't forget the very cool crummy-looking logo that goes with it... I say this band is cult already! So, yeah... this demo is the stuff! Get it at all cost, although a few bucks should be enough...

Tracks: 1)Intro/Into the Embrycrypt 2)Urinary Eruption by Severe Pus Clots 3)Chyme Consumed Regurgitated and Consumed Once More 4)Insanely Sick and Pathologically Rotten 5)Vomit Inducing Phlegm 6)Frothing Pile of Purulent Bile 7)Gastrointestinal Spewage Through Prolapsed Anus 8)Hands Deep in Foetal Mush 9)Abortion Leftovers to Love and Cherish as Ones Own 10)MAggot Infested Cavities 11)Strenuous Defecation of Dark Red Hemoglobin 12)Intro/Infect, Secrete, Devour
Goresplattered Bonus Rehearsal Tracks: 13)Pneumocystic Carinii Pneumonia 14)Intreased Atherosclerosis 15)Disseminated Histoplasmosis 17)Untitled 18)Mycobacterium Ascium Complex 19)Squamous Cell Carcinoma 20)Malignant Neoplasms 21)Cryptococcus Infection of the Lung 22)Pulmonary Thromboembolus to Artery 23)Toxoplasma Pseudocyst/Pathological Holocaust

PSYCHOSADISTIC HATERAPIST/EROTONOMICON/UTERUS/SEPTIC SCUM 4-Way Split Cdr

(No Life Records - No Life 03)
Release date:
2004
Running time: 41:10

Psychosadistic Haterapist Review: PSHR is playing savage goregrind completely inspired by Catasexual Urge Motivation, Slough and early Gore Beyond Necropsy... with drum-machine-motored blasting beats (the drum machine sound slightly reminds me of Lymphatic Phlegm), vocal-wise: really effective distorted/pitch-shifted snarling and sickening back-throat gurgling grunts, downtuned as hell guitars with a lot of buzzing riffs often concluding with grinding and thrashing parts... Overall, song stuctures are well-thought out and gripping... Compositions sometimes run between 2 or 3 minutes, and there's a kind of hypnotic atmosphere that emerges from it all after a while... also songs are combined with some pretty eerie intros about blood and murder, all of this contributing one hell of a sickening, brain numbing, twisted grind experience.
Erotonomicon Review: Here's some more of that CUM-style goodness, extremely similar to PSHR in sound. It's got everything from stomach-churning sloshing gurgles, pulsing drum machine hyperspeed beats to repetitive heavy guitar riffs and catchy spiralling song structures... Maybe not as full fledged sounding as PSHR but very close honestly. Just really excellent and obsessive goregrind!
Uterus Review: Hard-striking drum machine blasts, heavy chugging guitars, ultra-guttural growls... Real brutal and messy stuff but not without some fun touches as well. Overall it sounds a bit like a drum machine version of Rotting Flesh. Uterus' side also concludes with a very nice cover of Gut's cover of a Ulcerous Phlegm song ("Consequence"). Not my favorite on this split but still alot of wacky fun...
Septic Scum Review: This is a side project of Dysmenorrheic Hemorrhage's Kyle. No surprise there, the drum machine and guitar parts sound just like DH, although the overall thing feels a lot more chaotic and improvised... Also, the DH trademark absurdly pitch-shifted gurgling vocals are substituted for some truly piercing screeches. Sounds kind of like a really crazed, rawer version of Dropdead. Really assaultive, intense and noisy kind of stuff... It lacks a bit of structure sometimes but it's still extremely enjoyable pissed off grindcore ultraviolence. Ok, and that's it I guess... To sum up: a formidable cdr, the cream of the crop of underground grind and gore drum machine projects and bands... Just go get it!

PSYCHOSADISTIC HATERAPIST/MANIAC KILLER Split Cdr

(No Life Records - No Life 02)
Release date:
2001
Running time: 26:54

Psychosadistic Haterapist Review: Really excellent drum machine goregrind... Songs are totally focused on fullspeed rhythms, with mostly tons of bombastic drum blasts (although there's still enough variety to keep things interesting throughout), dark, ominous and sort of grubby-sounding guitar riffs, slushing gurgles and spiteful squeals... The sound is pretty thick, although with a really rough edge to it but it fits the style perfectly in my opinion. Songs are written strictly about sick things like murder and mayhem... There's also a couple of serial killer-type intros put to good use... If you miss Catasexual Urge Motivation, well then Psychosadistic Haterapist is the band that most successfully recreates what CUM used to do... A deranged and putrid atmosphere allied to some truly devastating grind.
Maniac Killer Review: This is the pre-Frightmare solo project of Lord Gore guitarist Neil, it's called Maniac Killer and it's drum machine grind-death... Musically pretty similar to things like Fuck... I'm Dead: blasting, ultrafast with short-as-fuck songs, some really great riffs with a death metal vibe to them... and regarding vocals, just really raunchy guttural growls accompagnied by frantic backing shrieks... Some highly effective song-writing that just keeps it to the essential, just staying quite basic but also with tons of very fast-paced grindcore-type of twist and turns, lots of killer rhythmic changes of pace and stuff... Also some of the greatest, funniest and most dynamic use of horror movie samples I've ever heard! To me, Maniac Killer remains quite simply one of the very best one-man grind-death projects ever...

Tracks: Psychosadistic Haterapist: 1)Obviously Dead 2)Th Kill was not Spontaneous, it was Premeditated and Well Executed 3)MURDERHATEKILLKILLKILL pt. 187 4)In the Detid Muck of my Crawlspace is Where you will Find the Remains of Ten to Twenty of my Victims, One was a Little Girl 5)Sewergoddess Vomiticum 6)I Internalized all of my Victims 7)Necrosick Hallucinations from Consumption of Adipocere 8)Maggots that will Destroy this Body 9)Defleshed and Disposed 10)Find them, Blind them, Killer them...
Maniac Killer: 11)Basement Depravities 12)Exploited Meathook Candy 13)Kill for the Master 14)The God of Cum Filled Open Wounds 15)Gutted Bitch Porno 16)Cannibal Buffet of Putrid Genitalia 17)Amputation Celebration 18)Way Beyond Murder and Sexual Molestation 19)Masturbating in the Blood Dripping from the dangling Freshly Butchered Corpse of a 2 Year Old Child 20)Taboo Rituals

SMOTHERED BROTHERS/PURULENT SPERMCANAL Split 7" Ep

(Murder the World Productions)
Release date:
2004

Smothered Brothers Review: Solid porn-grind-death with gore-drenched splattery growls/frenzied screaming, pummeling drum programs, thrashing guitars, a nice heavy bass sound... overall, this is all pretty well-structured and serious sounding stuff except for the part where it's also got crazy-ass arrangements made with a variety of weird instruments (balalaika, banjo, etc..) and occasionally totally wacky, clear singing or whistling voices (in the vein of Gronibard or some of the weirdest stuff Gut recorded...) Some very eccentric but smashing porngrind then, some of it is extremely catchy and the rest just hysterically funny... and that's a downright twisted sense of humor we're talking about here! S.B. really found their niche in sick bestiality porn... the perfect match for Purulent Spermcanal really...
Purulent Spermcanal Review: Ok, this is some of PSC's best stuff ever in my mind, maybe it's just me but I think this band always sounds especially cool on vinyl! Some crushing tight drumming, a fine pitch-shifted gurgle for vocals, some very direct and damn effective riffs, a crunchy distorted bass sound, all that and also a slight crust touch... The songs here all have a tremendous amount of grinding punch... Hugely infectious kind of stuff... Goregrind doesn't get much better than this! Yeah, this is definitely on the level of Dead Infection & Malignant Tumour back in their cool-as-hell goregrind days!

CSMD/NIHILISTIC COMMANDO/KANIBAL BLOODBATH/NOISE "I'm going ape" 4-Way Split 7" Ep

(No Fucking Labels! - NFL#12)
Release date:
2004

Well, here's a 4-way split ep full of sizzling noise, bizarre imagery and... well, some more sizzling noise...
CSMD Review: Hostilities start with some heart-felt, destructive noisecore from CSMD... a totally muddied out and muffled sound quality, mostly midtempo crust-type beats, a prominently bass-based noise apocalypse, with demented, abrasive shrieks, and alot of blistering amp noise! Just undiluted straightforward noisecore... Not for the faint of heart!
Nihilist Commando Review: Blasting, ultra-fast and furious grind, guitars that sound like a noisy blur, songs only a few seconds short, vocals all shouts and screams... We're somewhat at a middle between early Napalm Death "Scum" era and Protes Benct with an added touch of vicious noisecore. Lyrics are basicly pretty bleak and radical opinions and messages on stuff... and yeah, truth can be rough sometimes...
Kanibal Bloodbath Review: Some more noise on side b too, this time this is pure noise with occasional noisecore variations, but yeah, mostly pure noise... also perhaps the most experimental and perplexing band on this ep, with de-structured songs, nightmarish, repetitive drum machine beats and eerie lofi, muffled soundquality... This is really intense, saturating, aggressive kind of stuff... Slightly reminiscent of some of the craziest Sore Throat stuff...
Noise Review: The ep ends on a lofi brasilian noisecore/grindcore note: heavy bass sound, confusing guitar mess, fast grinding drumming, some very nasty growling vocals. Just very some very primal raw noisy grindcore, quite close to Fear of God...
Goes without saying, but this one is for noise freaks only!

Tracks: CSMD: 1)Invasion of the thrashcore clones 2)The human race can eat my banana 3)Distroy all commercial monsters (instr.) 4)Noisecore returns 5)Fuck your country, Fuck your culture, Fuck your nationality 6)Monster Island Gang Bang 7)Destroyers of everything EMO & MELO 8)Looking punk is trendy 9)Tyranosaurussex 10)Jimi Hendrix aint nothing compared to me and my airguitar!!!
Nihilist Commando: 1)Infected 2)Anti-womanizer 3)Child violence 4)Hate 5)Troops of terror 6)Infected by Christ 7)Nailpolish world 8)High heels luxury 9)Strangler 10)Ultimate fight 11)Natural and non-erotic 12)Sickness 2003 13)Hole 14)Sars 15)Junkie 16)Human shields of war 17)Multichannel jackoff 18)Instrument of peace 19)Cocaine line 20)Wirehead 21)It takes... 22)Amsterdam beauty

CATHETER/F.U.B.A.R. Split Cd

(Selfmadegod Records - SMG 010)
Release date:
2004
Running time: 26:38

Catheter Review: Us grindcore... Some hardcore/metal influences in there but otherwise this stuff is totally intense, aggressive, grinding and performed fullspeed. Musicianship is just killer, everything's so very tightly delivered... mindblowing fast and skilful drumming, fierce grinding guitar riffs, crazy bass work... Songs are all furious, ultrafast-paced, rhythmically compelling and led by some really angry vocals: constantly roaring, vociferating or shouting equally angry lyrics... the sound production is pretty big too in my opinion, just the right amount of sharp and heavy... All around catchy, smashing and stimulating grindcore!

F.U.B.A.R. Review: This band is slightly similar to Catheter, perhaps somewhat more chaotic and loose... Still, this is all fine and energic grindcore: strenuous speeds, concise and heavy guitar riffing, midrange roaring shouts and blaring shrieks... This band sounds totally enraged, the anger and strength put into this stuff is almost palpable... the downtuned tone of the guitar and the sound of the drums totally reminds me of early Napalm Death ("Mentally Murdered" Ep), the vocals are maybe closer to something like Cripple Bastards though... Sound production is not exactly crystal clear, but still quite good and heavy. This cd's also got some swell artwork and layout, printed lyrics, now add to that 2 excellent grind bands... that pretty much makes of this a great quality grind release!

Tracks: Catheter: 1)Conspiracy Control 2)Daily Grind 3)Chained By A Belief 4)Blazes Of Black 5)Prodigal Son 6)My Life 7)Reason To Live 8)Novelty
F.U.B.A.R.: 9)Run 10)Uniformed Looser 11)Snitch 12)Way Of The Fool 13)Take Away Economy / Leave Behind Society 14)Divide And Rule 15)Thieves 16)Reversed 17)Mind Shit 18)Hatred In Progress 19)Jenny Said 20)Draw The Line 21)Scars 22)Like Thousands Before 23)Cure For Pain
