- HIDEOUS
MANGLEUS INTERVIEW
- (February 16 1999)
Interview
with Samuel from Hideous Mangleus.
- Questions were
asked by myself(Pierre) through email
- 1)Hi!
How are you?
I'm
doing fine. Thanx for asking.
- 2)Well,
do you rehearse very often? & Is the band active?
Well, I
guess you cut me to the quick. Actually, We haven't
been rehearsing very much lately. In fact, I am sad
to inform you that Hideous is calling it quits. Why?
you ask. Alot of reasons actually. Conflicting work
schedules, conflicting interests, lack of interest on
the part of some of the members. To be honest, I'm
tired of being Captain Ahab. In the beginning, we
were a team. But, lately it's become a hastle to
some. Which, I'm not slagging anyone, alot changes in
ten years. HELL, Feev's married. But, I've kinda
always been "the team leader." But, anymore
there is just no team to lead, we're just to
disorganized to make any progress. But, like you
french people say "such is life."
- 3)If
you're active. Do you sometimes play gigs etc??? and
do you plan playing some live shows?
Well,
although we're breaking up. We are trying to plan one
last show, probably in the Pittsburgh area. Kinda
like a "Ten Year Anniversery/Final Gig"
show. Just to celabrate our ten years in the
underground, and so some of our new fans can
experience a Hideous show before we split. You know,
we'll just get a bunch of Kegs of good beer, and
whatever other substances anyone cares to bring on
their own, and make a big party out of the whole
thing!
- 4)Have
you recently wrote new songs and do you plan
releasing something new?
Well,
while we are rehearsing for "the final
gig", we do hope to write like five songs for a
possible final EP release. Plus we have acouple
Hideous tracks that have yet to make it to any
release. So, maybe we'll also record those also. That
way, the fans will have like ten songs to jam to
instead of five. We may also, depending on the sound
and our performance, possibly record our last show
for a live release of some sort.
- 5)What
are the most important dates in H. M. biography?
Please, tell me all the releases you put out; and if
possible some words about them!
Well,
we formed Hideous back in March of '89. We released
our first demo "All Your Friends are Dead"
in '90. The "We Live...You Sleep" EP was
released in '91. Our "Unearthing Grandma's
Grave" Ep was realeased in '93. And our
"All Your Friends are Dead" full-length CD
was released in '98, although it was recorded in late
'96. As for other important dates. Well, I can't
remember the exact dates but we played with some
killer bands over the years - A.C./ShitScum, Phlegm,
Disharmonic Orchestra, Exit 13, Incantation, Choatic
Plague, Deceased-Hi King! my Deathmetal Buddy,
Rottrevore, Submachine, the list goes on.
- 6)I
know you're in another band called Goblin. Can you
tell us more about it? Are other H.M. members also
involved in other musical projects or whatever other
underground activities?
Yes,
about a year and a half ago I started working with a
guitarist friend of mine, Gary Zywicki. First, kinda
in the capacity of a "side-band." But, as
the situation in Hideous became futile. I decided to
put my full strengths into Goblin. I've always been a
dedicated member of Hideous, but when it became clear
that the others weren't willing to give 100%, or even
50 in some cases. It became aparent that it was time
to move on. I'll miss Hideous, it's like my first
child or something. I think Hideous was and is a
Great band. But, it's kinda like Elvis in the later
years. Some are just like "going through the
motions." And that's not what it's about. I walk
out on that stage to put on the best show I can, and
so do the others. But, as our rehearsal time kept
getting shorter and shorter. It began to show. With
Goblin, so far it's only me and Gary. But, we are
very dedicated. And are determined to write the most
brutal shit comin' down the creek. It's a bit more in
the Mid-paced area, but that's where we like it.
Chunk part after Chunk part! You underground heads
are gonna like this shit! I GIVE YOU MY WORD!!!
- 7)What
H.M. lyrics are about? Do you try to express
something special with them? and well, just talk
about your lyrics please!
- Well, I guess the
lyrics fall into two catogories. The "Horror
Story" type lyrics like Deadtime, Skullfuck,
Experiments, Degeneration, etc. And, the "Social
Critisism" lyrics like Retarded, Question Your
Motives, Mutiny, PlayDumb, etc. Yes, we definatly try
to express something special with them. Instead of
just spewing together a bunch of senseless sentences
about chopping someone up. I strive to actually build
somewhat of a story line. At least as much of a story
line that is possible within' the context of a
Grindcore song. I'm not going to tell you I'm a
fuckin' Steven King of nuthin'. But, I think I do
okay. Some of the early lyrics, aren't exactly bone
chilling. I mean Skullfuck is about as basic as a
song can get. But, it has its place, put the music
behind it and you have yourself a Horror-Anthem that
makes people go fuckin' nuts! I think a newer song
like Retarded, shows how far we've come. It
basically, how the people we refer to as
"retarded" are actually alot more happy
then we are. Cause they don't get caught up on stupid
bullshit like us "normal folks" do. Who has
the coolest shoes, or the prettiest hair, or
whatever. That shit doesn't mean shit! Be yourself
and support the cool people in your life. Grind music
is so powerful, and no wonder why. Because it was
spawned by the angst of punk and hardcore. This world
is fucked up, so let's sing about doing something
about it. And people with ears that listen will join
together and straighten this shit out! Just to
mention, I teach Autistic Children, they are cool as
fuck!!! Oh well, onto the next question (your
motives!)
- 8)The
release of "All your friends are dead" CD
have been delayed very much? no? How can you describe
the album and your music style? What does it
contains? Everything went like you wanted it to go?
Did you recorded the whole album in one time?
(running time is very long!) Did you have hard times
to record it? What is the track 30?
Yes,
the Album was delayed by many factors. Some internal,
some external. Again, conflicting schedules within
the band, different levels of participation. Although
I must tell you, it was definatly a joint effort.
That was the last time we were really a team,
while we were rehearsing and recording the CD. Then
there was delays because of the record plant Matthias
(Ecocentric) was using shutdown. And then we had
trouble with the cover, reproducing it. Just to
mention, I'm re-mastering the art for the CD for a
possible re-press. Just to sharpen it up, and correct
some typos and such. As for descibing the Album, it
basically is a compilation of most everysong we had
ever written. Although we've got an incredible
response from the underground eversense the early
days. Matthias and Ecocentric were the first to offer
us a deal for a full-length Cd in our ten years. So
we figured we might as well record as much as
possible for the disc so the fans would have all our
material. In case, this was our last. As for our
style? I guess Grindcore. Although I think we play a
very unique style of grind. We call it
"HorrorCore." Basically, Ten Years Ago, and
still now, we were into alot of Hardcore Music like
The Misfits, The Accused, 7 Seconds, Agnostic Front,
Minor Threat,...so we started playing a similiar
style. But, we were into Horror flicks, sick shit,
and were just pissed off in general. So, the music
kinda augmented into GRIND. Which, we really hadn't
been exposed to very much at that time. But, what we
had heard was some Killer shit like "SCUM",
"For God Your Soul...", "From
Enslavement...", "World Downfall."
When we were first coming out there really weren't
alot of strict GRIND bands out, more deathmetal
stuff. We loved it all, but coming from a hardcore
background, it was natural to play Grind. Yes, we
recorded the Album at one time. 29 songs in 20 hours!
10 for recording, 10 for mixdown. Our sound on the
disc isn't exactly what it should have been. Yes,
Joel is kinda mad at himself for not giving you the
classic Hideous bass sound. But, it all happened so
fast. We didn't know what the fuck was goin on! Over
All though, we are happy with the release. I think it
displays a solid body of songwriting. And, as I've
mention gives the fans all the Hideous their eardrums
can handle.
- 9)Do
you watch TV? The intros used on the album came from
TV? Do you like watching movies? Do you have fave
movies/directors?
You
know, I really don't watch too much TV. Not like I
used to. In fact, I don't even have cable. Actually,
most of the intros on the disc we made. Did you
notice that the newscasters' last name is Biles? I'm
referring to the newscasts were we're
"impaled" with stakes an' shit. I thought
that up, to bring a sorta Horror theme to the disc.
Since, we are a Horror band. There are two movie
samples, one from "Evil Dead". I couldn't
not have a "E.D." sample on the Hideous
disc. That movie kills! And there's a sample from
"Silence of the Lambs" at the beginning of
"SkullFuck". I figured that song deserved a
sick as fuck intro! As for movies, I still enjoy the
Horror classics. I'd say "The Exorcist" and
"The Omen" are my faves. I'm more into
plots and atmosphere, then just people choppin'
eachother up. That's way Evil Dead is so good. It's
Gore Crazy, but it's also very fuckin' scary! I'm
lookin' forward to the new "StarWars"
flick, it's gonna kill! I like Forrest Gump, call me
weak but I'm really a closet sentimental dude. Don't
worry I love eating pussy!!! I'm not soo sentimental
I like hairy asses. Girls are Godly!!! Speaking of
which, I do have Gary (guitarist-GOBLIN) record
acouple shows for me, since I don't have cable. 7th
Heaven cause Jessica Biel is so fucking hot it is
unreal! And "Dharma and Greg", Jenna Elfman
is a Goddess!!! If I was Greg, we'd never leave the
bedroom! O'well enough silly shit! Next...
- 10)I
know your musical tastes are not really into
death/grind? Do you still appreciate some death/grind
things? and except that; What are your fave
bands/albums?
Actually,
I love death and grind. Mostly, "The
Originals" though. Terrorizer, old Napalm, old
Carcass, old Morbid, old Celtic, Cryptic Slaughter,
old Pungent, Dream Death, Fear of God,etc... I guess
where you got confused was how I told you my all time
faves were the bands I grew up to like Sabbath, Kiss,
Zepplin, Beatles, AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest,
Jimi Hendrix, The Who, etc. I love every style of
music, except for maybe like BlueGrass, and that
Grateful Dead bullshit. I can't beleive they have the
audasity to call that shit "JAM" music.
James Brown and the JB's would blow that shit off the
stage. Sabbath used to do killer improvs! That's Jam
music! Jimi Hendrix is Jam music! Some of the
"newer" extreme bands I like or want to
hear are Deeds of Flesh, DropDead, Hemourrage, and
Pessimist.
- 11)Well,
sorry! this was short! but I do not have any more
questions in mind! PLEASE FINISH THE
"INTERVIEW" WITH REAL COOL WORDS!!!
- Well, Thank You Pierre
for the 'view! Please Keep in touch, cause GOBLIN is
going to be Keepin' the Brutality Alive! First with
our "Flesh for Fantasy" demo, then with our
debut full-length entitled "Master of
Brutality". We are hoping to release this on a
somewhat major label, so it's distributed and
advertised very well worldwide. Beleive me, I'm not
slagging any of the smaller labels I've worked with
in the past, D.I.Y. is cool as fuck! But, you know,
it's just nice when the underground supporters can go
into their local record shop and pick up the disc. As
for HIDEOUS, as I've mentioned we'll be playing one
last show, possibly recording a final 5 to 10 song
EP, and I also just put together a Live Tape from a
"vintage" performance for all you who
wonder what Hideous sounds like live. I call it
"Dead by Dawn" (Bootlegged in Pennsylvania
'90). If anyone is interested just send $5 to Sam
Biles PO BOX 236 Allenport, PA 15412 USA, and I'll be
certain to get that out to you! Any question, or just
to say Hi you can also e-mail me at uniteduniverse@yahoo.com . Or check out our
website at http://deathmetal.com/hideous. Well, one last thing I'd
like mention real quick. Some people have informed
us, me and gary-Goblin, that there is an Italian band
also named Goblin. All I can say about that is, at
the time I was inspired with the name I honestly had
no clue this band existed. I had seen Suspiria, and
Patrick, etc and liked the soundtracks, but never
really payed close enough attention to realize the
band was called Goblin. We went about six or eight
months with this name before we found out. And, as
you can imagine, have become quite attached to the
name. I apologize to anyone who thinks it an insult
or just bad taste, or whatever to use this name. But,
at this time we have chose to continue to use this
name, due to it being merely coinsidence that another
band was called this. And besides that we will sound
nothing like them, we are brutaly Heavy Death Rock,
they're experimental ambiance rock. God Bless them!
But , I feel very strongly about the way I was
inspired with this name. And feel there is room
enough in this great big world for two band with the
same name. I think you'll agree after you hear our
music! Our debut demo "Flesh for Fantasy"
will be out in a month. Get in touch if you are
interested in hearing it. Lastly, To Pierre and The
underground that supported Hideous for ten Years, and
will hopefully continue their support with Goblin. I
say Thank You from the bottom of our Hearts!!! We
can't do it without all you cool Sickos!!! God
Bless!!!
