- REGURGITATE(Sweden) INTERVIEW
(november 13 1998)
Goregrind and Grindcore interview #11 with Rikard and Ubbe from Regurgitate(Sweden)
Questions were asked by myself(Pierre) through emailSo, you're really back? When will you start again rehearsing & composing new songs? Do you foresee changing something in RGTE sound? Or will you always play crazy grindcore we know well?
Rikard: Yepp! It looks like we´re back in business again. Hmm the rehearsing thing have always been a problem for us as Peter is always busy with other bands, of course it´s not only his fault that we´re not rehearsing that often. I guess we´re all quite lazy when it comes to that. But it would be great if Ubbe could do some new trax so that we could arrange a rehearse once in awhile. Correct me if I´m wrong Ubbe but you´ve done some new trax huh?! At least I heard them at your place awhile ago!! I would personally be very satisfied if we could continue with our style of grindcore. It would really suck if we started to play progressive metal or shit like that!!!!!!! No! Grindcore and noisecore is the only music I want to be involved in!
Ubbe: There will not be any drastic change in musicstyle for RGTE, but there might be a change in sound, or something like that. After all, the old tracks were written 4-5 years ago. Nothing decided at this point though. RGTE will always play grindcore in one form or another. As for new tracks, I've at least begun sketching on some new songs, but it's been awhile since I wrote any songs so the first few I write will most likely be discarded.
Do you know who will now play in RGTE? What will be the line-up..? Peter is now playing with ENTOMBED(!!) and several other bands... Do you think he will find the time to play again with RGTE?
Rikard: Well, if we start rehearsing again as a band I think it will only be me and Ubbe for sure. Peter have said that if we´ll record new stuff in the future he´ll help us out for sure but NO TOURING he said. I don´t think that we´ll ever go on tour again so that doesn´t matter anyway. But at least I see him still as a RGTE member. Ahh shit we´ll see what happens later on! Joppe is a chapter of itself. He doesn´t even bother to say hi when we see eachother on the train to work so he can just go and fuck himself!
Ubbe: As Rikard said, we are the only definite members of RGTE, and Peter is rather busy. If we go into a studio later on I guess that I will play the bass as well as the guitar, even though I'm not quite as hard in my judgement of Joppe. I played with him in a death/grind band for 4 years so I know he is a great bassplayer, but GrindCore isn't really his cup of tea.
What did you do during these 4 years? no-one heard about you! Do you still have great interest in grindcore/underground? What music are you listening to? Aren't your musical tastes changing as you get older?
Rikard: I´ve been working a lot since as I got a new job back in ´96 as a computer technician and I just floated away from the underground I guess. That fuckin´ suxx but it´s the horrible truth and I hate myself for gaving up the underground contacts. But I´m back and I hope to stay there!!! The music has always been the same for me(since 1988), Grindcore, noisecore and brutal deathmetal. Sometimes I find it quite soft to turn on a AC/DC or ACCEPT record. Hey, after all that´s the fuckin´ music I grew up to so I can´t just leave it behind me. (Guess I´ve got a point there huh!?)
Ubbe: I've been busy in school, but that has always been the case (I study mathematics and physics and intend to be a teacher when I'm done with school). As for the underground I must say that I've never been a part of that. I am quite satisfied with writing music that I like myself, but who knows, I might get more interested in the underground than I was before. Musicwise it is definitely GrindCore for me, but I haven't been able to appreciate NoiseCore the way Rikard does. The funny thing is that the older I get the more extreme my taste in music becomes. I used to listen a lot to Death Metal, but nowadays I get bored if there aren't any grind-parts in the songs. Therefore I listen to some Black Metal, but many of the Black Metal bands are boring because there are too few changes of pace in the songs. When I want to listen to something relaxing I prefer unusual sonic landscapes (huh?)....dark ambient music..: Raison D'Etre, Ordo Equilibrio, In Slaughter Natives.. (great swedish label: Cold Meat Industry), but this isn't something I listen to every day.
You're in touch with Relapse recs! For the "Effortless regurgitation of bright red blood" 94 cd i think? But are they also ok for releasing something new from RGTE, for example, a new full-length album!?? What's up with the re-release of "Concrete human torture" demo? Other plans?
Rikard: Yeah, that´s right Pierre, Relapse Rec. are going to re-issue our "Effortless " CD and for bonus there will be the "Concrete Human " ´94 demo and 10 other trax which have been on split 7" ep´s with PSYCHOTIC NOISE and GRUDGE. So, the new CD will contain 64 trax of RGTE grindcore. There will also be a new cover and new lay-out. It´ll hopefully be out in early ´99. We haven´t talked about any other releases yet but I think it would be fuckin´ great if Relapse could release new stuff with RGTE in the future. The contract we´ve signed now are only for this particular release so we´ll just have to wait and see what happens.
Ubbe: Yepp, Rikard said it all.
Did you ever write lyrics for RGTE songs? Songs from "Effortles..."cd & "Concrete..." seem not having lyrics, contrary to songs from the split cd with DEAD, am I right?
Rikard: Lyrics suck!!!!!! Ha, ha, ha!!! Noooo, just kiddin´. We´ve only had lyrics on one single release and that is the split CD with DEAD but that fat ass motherfucker from Poserslaughter Rec. didn´t print them in the booklet. Those lyrics deal with human slayings, torture and other fully normal perversions that I kill my time with nowdays, hi, hi, hi!!!! But on all other releases I just stood in the studio and growled my way through the trax as the other guys in the band sat beside and had a really great time making fun of me but I don´t really give a fuck about that HA, HA, HA!!!!!!!!! On one recording I think I used old CARCASS lyrics and that worked out pretty good too I guess!!!
Ubbe: Why write lyrics when you can write new songs instead? But I wonder what Rikard meant by us laughing at him in the studio.... when we recorded "Effortless.." he got up early in the morning and went to the studio and recorded the vocals so that he was finished by the time we got there.... he never gave us a chance to laugh at him, heh, heh.
Somebody told me you only played a small number of live gigs? Right? Do you have good memories of these gigs?
Rikard: Yeah, we´ve only played live a few times. I think we´ve only done four or five gigs. Two of them were in Germany in march ´95 and I have fuckin´ great memories from that tour. Especially when we had a great party with the guys from DEAD INFECTION in Svens flat in Berlin (Sven from Yellow Dog Rec.). We met some really cool people over there. I´ll never forget that trip to Germany!!!! The gigs in sweden was really too much! At one gig we just played five minutes coz we were too drunk to even stay on our legs. Shit happens, right!?
Ubbe: As for the gigs in Sweden, that was before I joined the band, so there isn't much I can say about them, but they weren't too serious I guess. The gigs in Germany on the other hand weren't too serious either I guess, but they were great fun. The gig we did in Berlin was great (I don't know what the audience thought though). It was great playing with Dead Infection....and by the way I love their grind drums remix of BeeGees "Stayin' Alive" (on their "Greatest Shits" '98).
How do you procede for playing 37 songs on an album? and remembering every of them? Is there some improvisation in the studio? or do you really play every of the songs in rehearsal before recording?
Rikard: Hmm That´s a question for Ubbe and Peter really. Ofcourse there´s some improvisation in the studio but some of the trax are quite well rehearsed before we enter a studio. I think we only rehearsed five or six times before we recorded the "Effortless " CD. Two or three times before the demo ´94. The trax for the split 7" ep´s we did at the same time as we recorded them. Cool huh!?!?
Ubbe: I have all the riffs written down in my own kind of tabulature, so the improvisation is more in how the riffs are played rather than in making up songs in the studio. Peter is more or less free to improvise on the drums as long as he sticks to the song. In order to remember how the songs on the CD should have sounded like, we recorded a tape with all the songs while we where rehearsing, and before each song we recorded in the studio we listened to the rehearsal-tape, so every song was indeed rehearsed and recorded the way we rehearsed it.
Can you say some words about LOWLAND RECS? The label which release "Effortless..."cd in 1994. Is it still an active label?
Rikard: A fuckin´ great guy! A fuckin´ great label as long as it stays on a underground level. Hans is really fast in putting his releases out and he´s also VERY honest and he always keeps his promises. Our CD were recorded in May and in July it was already released so I´m personally very happy with that deal!!!!!!!! The only thing I can complain on when it comes to Lowland Rec. is the quality on the RGTE shirts he printed. After three or four washes Ubbe had big fuckin´ holes in his shirt and that really suxx in my opinion. And they were quite expensive too so I don´t think that Lowland Rec. still exists atleast he told me so when I talked to him last time and that was a few months ago. But I whish him good luck with his great band LAST DAYS OF HUMANITY!!!! Cheers mate!!!!
Ubbe: I agree with Rikard. I really liked the "Effortless..." CD and I was impressed by how soon after the recording it was released.
I'm a real horror/gore freak, and I just wanted to know if you like & collect such movies???
Rikard: Talk to Ubbe about that. He´s the fuckin´ twisted goremaniac of Stockholm. I also like it a lot but not as much as he do. I´m more into snuff and shit like that. www.goregallery.com is the best fuckin´ site around!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ubbe: Well, I used to be more into collecting movies than I am now. It gets kinda expensive and frankly many of the movies suck.. but then again, that is way I love them. Horror/Gore and Sci-Fi movies is what I like. Good stories, good acting... NO!!! I want special effects that knock me off my feet. Favourites include BrainDead (Dead Alive if you are american), the Thing (Carpenter's) - the FX are amazing, the Omen trilogy (Omen IV must be a joke)... I also have a thing for italian zombies. I've collected movies by Lucio Fulci and Dario Argento, and I am pissed off because I have lost my copy of Fulci's "the Beyond".
Are social/political topics interesting you? As well as topics about animal rights etc...
Rikard: NOPE! Politicians just makes me fall asleep. And animal rights? Well, that is ofcourse an obvious thing for me. Animals rule!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ubbe: As usual I have to agree with Rikard. My girlfriend is a vegetarian because of the way animals are treated, but I am not. This does not, however, mean that I don't care.
You know the half of grindcore bands have social lyrics, the others have gory lyrics... This is in early Napalm Death way or Carcass way... These are your two main influences right?
Rikard: Yepp, I guess so. Those bands has always been very big influences for us as well as old XYSMA and EXTREME NOISE TERROR.
Ubbe: When we recorded "Effortless.." I wanted it to be a mix of "From Enslavement to Obliteration" and "Reek of Putrifaction" two of my favourite albums. I thought that we got close enough. Obviously our topics are a bit closer to Carcass, and I think the music is closer to Napalm Death, but that can be changed. Not topics... the music. If you have missed Xysmas "Swarming of the Maggots" demo thats too bad because its like "Reek...", perhaps even better. I like their new stuff too, but in another way. One of my all time biggest influenses is actually Unseen Terror... my favourite band for years, but their music is kinda cheesy. Listen to their "Charred Remains" on the "Human Error" album.. yes. One of the best songs made.
Well, that's all I could think about!!! Do you have a message of hope to communicate to grind freaks reading this?
Rikard: Hmm well, look out for our forthcoming CD on Relapse Rec. All you RGTE freaks out there don´t hesitate to get in contact with us for more information concerning RGTE or BRAIN DAMAGE. Thanx a lot for the interview Pierre and the fuckin´ great work you´ve done with our website, CHEERS!!!!!!!
Hails to NASUM and the fuckin´ perverted freaks in EXHUMED + all the other cool bands that we´re in contact with!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ubbe: Snails to Nasum... "Inhale/Exhale" is fuckin' great, som vi säger i Sverige. Now I have to listen to Dead Infections Stayin´ Alive remix a couple of more times...so good night.
