Interview with Tuomo
What pushed you to form a band like Cause For Effect? How long has the band been around?
I have played bass over 10 years and almost from the beginning I have played in various "bands". I and Ari, the drummer started to play together in summer 1992 and we started as a metal band but slowly during the years our music progressed to the current style.

Do you feel being influenced by some bands? Are there a band who you consider as an exemple to follow? Do you only look for originality in grind n' death style, or do you like this style in the traditional way too?
Our influences are the whole music genre, but of course some bands like old Napalm Death and that sort of stuff has been the most important effect for us. I remember when I heard ND first time in 1987 I was totally amazed how fast and intense it was! I wanted to do such music too and it was possible after Ari and I started to play together, slowly during the years Ari learned how to play faster and faster and we started to compose our style of grindcore.
I see originality as a vital thing for the music. You know, somebody has always invented it first. Some bands didn't want to repeat used ideas but wanted to do something never heard before, like Napalm Death did, Lärm, Discharge etc...
I love old Napalm Death, Terrorizer, Unseen Terror, Carcass, Agathocles as the masters of traditional grindcore but they made it years ago. Why just repeat their ideas, they gave great roots from where you can form your own expression of grind and that's what we try to do...

You had some experiences in live performance? do you like that? How was this show for the "Grind over Finland" thing? Any scheduled new gig?
Yep, we have played couple of gigs and one tour in Germany in autumn 1998. I love to do gigs, playing in front of audience is the meaning of this thing. Express your music and give something to the audience is great!
"Grind Over Finland" was arranged by Hostile Regression Records. In first grind tour there was Sanatorium from Slovakia and we played with them one gig in our hometown. Now there just was the 2nd grind over and Arsedestroyer from Sweden was the headliner. We played also one gig with them.
Here in Finland is very small grind scene but Hostile Regression Records has made a great job to arrange these little tours.
Few gigs in the future in different parts of Finland

Your lyrics are quite serious, but your music have a more funny & groovy side. Will you keep writing lyrics this way?
I know what you mean and in a way you have found the idea. I like that contrast between "funny" yet intense and fast music and "serious" socially aware lyrics. I try to do my lyrics in a neutral way, leave a lot "between the lines" so ppl who want to read lyrics can use their own mind to figure out I what I have meant to say. I don't serve straight "answers". Ppl have a right to form own opinions...
Music is the main thing of course and some of our lyrics are pure nonsense just because I don't want to be "serious" all the time.

What releases do you have out so far, can you introduce them all?
Cause For Effect / Noise waste split 7" EP. Was our first official release in 1995. Music on that vinyl was recorded in 3/1994 so in that time we were totally different band, we played metal/hardcore crossover. Moving to the grindcore came little bit later.
Cause For Effect : Nuclear Blues Tape EP. Was our first recording in this current style. We re-recorded some songs in 2/1997 but originally those tracks composed in 1994/1995 and some of them were the first grindcore songs we had
Cause For Effect / Utter Bastard split 3" MCD. Tracks recorded in 5/1997, 11 fast and intense rock grind songs. This was the first real rock grind release, our style had progressed a lot from "Nuclear Blues" and I'm still very satisfied with this.
Cause For Effect / Onanizer split 7" EP. 6 tracks taken from the full lenght CD sessions and recorded in 9/1998. Faster and better stuff that before. We still wait for full lenght CD...

What are the next releases coming up, how is your stuff gonna sound like, and who will release it? Heard about this MCD to be out on Ecocentric. Do you plan to make a complete long-length cd or lp after that?
Next release will be full lenght CD as I told before. Recorded in sept -98 and after and huge delay I hope it'll be out within this year. Ecocentric Records will release it, they were "dead" 5 months until 3 weeks ago Matthias took contact and he said "yep, I'm still working on with your CD". CD's name is "Fast Material" and it contains 32 songs within 33 minutes and about 150 riffs... It's the most intense rock grindcore record ever made, fast, groovy, funny and intense all in the same time.
Then we have recorded in 11/1999 20 new songs as a MCD and we try to find some label who wants to release it.
This new recording is the first without theguitar. Style has progressed even more to the jazzy direction, more different rhytms, tempos, parts within the song. People who have listened to it have usually said it's like jazz band playin' a grind and some ppl have noticed certain Scrawl influence in it.
This new recording's name is PQ-2 and if somebody wants to release it, don't hesitate to take contact.

Your only two to play right now in the band? Can you say who does what and brings what to the band? Don't you ever diverge on the way to compose or play songs? Will you keep it this way (a 2 piece band), or would you like someone else to join?
Yep, we are duo. My brother helped us 3 years but because he has his own band and he lives in a other town, we decided to continue as a duo. I do the riffs but together with Ari we put 'em together and form a song. Ari has sometimes interesting drum rhytms and we compose new riffs based on his drum work.
I and Ari share common vision about Cause For Effect we have played together almost 8 years and so we don't have to waste our time arguing. We just compose material and rehearse and compose and rehearse...
I guess we'll keep this 2 piece band because this works perfectly but we have spoken that if we wanted new member s/he would be pianist :) I guess guitar isn't necessary in our thing anymore. I can play guitar riffs by my bass...

How often & Where do you rehearse? Do you invite people to see you play rehearsals?
We rehearse 4- 5 times a week and it's so easy because our reh. place is only 800 meters from my home. It's a bomb shelter and there plays also few other bands but no difficulties in playing times. Sometimes our friends come to see and listen our new stuff but not often.

I'm not sure, but I think Agathocles cited Cause For Effect (among a few others including Dahmer, Rgte...) many times as a "recent" band who influence their style today... What do you think about that? and what do you think about Agathocles?
I'm totally honored... you know for me Agathocles is a one of the most imporant grindcore bands ever and if they mention CFE as their influence, whoa! What to say ? :)

Can you say something about finnish bands and finnish scene. Who're the best ones to absolutely look for?
Grind scene is small but here's some great bands like Rotten Sound, Furnace, Irritate, Harsh and Cause For Effect.

Well, I think that's all. Can't think of anything else right now. Hope this wasn't too short or too stupid... If you can think about one question for me, please ask away! It would end the interview in a funny unusual way..
Thanks for this interview! Did u ever expected such success to your website ?

Thank you Tuomo for the great answers. I only cared about doing an entertaining & informative page at first, really not about the success it would have. I'm still not sure it really has so-called success, but I'm happy so many people have free access to my silly reviews. When I started doing the site, I never got in touch with any band in the whole underground. So thanks to all of you open-minded guys who read and tollerated the idiotic crap I wrote along the years! Thank you again Tuomo for thinking about one question for me... And well, in fact, Sorry for having asked that to you... This firstly seemed it could be funny, but I now realize it looks really egocentric of me! Sorry everybody... hehehe I won't do that again!
