ZOMBIE HATE BRIGADE creates the terrifying, brain-melting ultimate Grind core weapon that will stop the worm infected hordes. Let´s hear what Chris has to say about the developements in the camp of the undead.

Tell me the story of ZOMBIE HATE BRIGADE! What about the name? Who had the idea for this band and why was the band born? What do we have to know about you Zombies?

Well the band is risen out of the ashes of our old projects (Adnauseam, Yeast Infection, Festering Puke, all can be found on my space by the way) Basically I called Nic and said were not done yet, we need to get motivated and start another project. Nic wanted the band to be more care free, and do things that we never really got to do in our past projects. He really wanted it evolve around horror films, zombies being our most favorite horror characters, we went with that. He also wanted us to sound pissed off and wanted the word “hate” involved. We went through several dumb names before landing on Zombie Hate Brigade. After a night of rehearsing, Nic just blurted out, Zombie Hate Brigade… We all looked at each other, and said YEA! That’s it!!! Our definition of the band is “the pure hatred towards humans” So we are for the zombies, not against them… No pussyfooting around here, you know exactly what you are going to get. Attacked by zombies, hateful zombies, a whole brigade of hateful zombies.

Is any of the bands you played before Z.H.B. still active? Tell me something about the bands you where in! Did you take anything musically or other ideas from your old bands with you for Z.H.B.?

I’ve been tinkering with other bands since I was 16. The rest of the guys have been active for almost as long. Nic and I were both in Yeast Infection, a slam death grind band that existed for a couple years. That saw 2 studio releases and actually Nic and I just released the last Yeast Infection before Josh (better known in the underground as Ace) passed away (R.I.P brother). I was also the vocalist and bassist in a band called Adnauseam that saw some exposure, traveling, 4 studio releases. Nic, Ace and I also had the side project Festering Puke, a noise core band that takes aim at other bands and turns them into jokes, we’ve been labeled as racist, and fascist, but it is all in humor, and if you don’t get it, then you just don’t get it.. Were not womanizers or racist by any means, we just like to poke fun at the human race, and that is what we did in Festering Puke. Paul was in a few local death metal bands that never really left the rehearsal space, and he joined a punk band called “Misunderstood” that took him everywhere, he played for some huge crowds… Got sponsored by a local snow boarding company, he saw some nice fame with that band, but punk was not really his style so he came with us, resorting back to his death metal and grind core roots. Our new drummer, Matt… that guy is crazy busy, not only with work, but he also plays drums in 2 other bands here in Colorado. ONE PER COFFIN and INFERNAL RACKET, both are great grind core acts, they can be found on my space as well as the other bands I spoke of above. Matt has been involved for a long time in the scene too.
We never really took anything with us from the other bands except for our involvement and spirit just because we wanted to do something we have never done before, and that was to be more care free and have more fun!

GET UP & KILL is your own label for supporting yourself in the States. Did you build this, because you had problems getting a deal for your debut? Will you keep this label small or do you want to hook up some other shit in future?

Yea GETUPANDKILL is our own label. How it came along was that Nic and I had so many past projects that didn’t get released that we just said fuck it were gonna release all this stuff on our own, and rely on trades to get the word out about the bands. We though that the music needed to be heard. And we had an independent label backing us for the release of the Zombie Hate Brigade CD, but they kept prolonging the release date. They would give us a date and then pull out. Then we finally got another date, so we set up a CD release party for it, and the label backed out again saying the CD would not be released for another 4 months. So we and the label came to an agreement that we would go our separate ways, and we would self finance the CD.
I believe the label will remain small. Nic and I are self motivated, we have a CD duplicator now, we have a thermal printer to print on the CD’s, we do most of the artwork, we just need a shrink wrap machine now. All our releases are numbered to a certain amount. Limited, to like 100 or 300. All the bands we have pressed are free to re-press their CD’s when ever they want, or can buy additional copies from us at wholesale cost. We are gearing up for 2 different Agathocles split releases in the next month! So we got Agathocles!!! Fucking Agathocles!!! Come on man!!! For us it can’t get any bigger then that, HAHAHAHAHA. We’ve been fans of Agathocles for 15 years!
Our releases are always up to be re-released on other labels, our projects! If another label wants to re-release it to a bigger audience then were all up for that. The Agathocles and stuff like that, the label will have to contact them on that. We are not going to give the go ahead on any music that is not ours. We are doing this purely for the love of the music!

How and why have you have decided for my friend Norman & Apathic View Prod to distribute your album in Europe? How did you come in touch with him? How many runs of your CD is over here?

Actually I contacted Norman. I was actually just surfing the internet of independent labels, and sending messages to them, showing our interest in releasing our CD through their label. Norman was the 2nd label I contacted, and he responded the fastest then any of the other labels so we went with Norman. He also expressed much interest in the music, he really liked it. So we went with Apathic View. And he has also helped out so many other bands in the past too and has treated them with complete fairness and respect. Norman was the best choice for us,,, and on top of that he runs a fair business, and he is an extremely cool person! We hope to work with him on some other projects in the future as well. That will all be determined at another time and how well our first release goes for him.
Norman did only 500 pressings of our CD on his label, so get one while you can. Their limited. For now, hahahaha

Are there any differences between US and the European release? How big are the print runnings? Have you ever thought about a vinyl version?

The difference is the cover of the CD. The bottom print looks like a horror movie poster, you know, with all who produced the movie and what not. Our release and Apathic View release have a different print, and then also the Apathic view stamp is on the release. The only regret is that we were not able to change the inside of the CD, we were having problems with the original file, so I was not able to thank Norman and Apathic View productions for helping us release the CD in Europe. If you’re reading this Norman, thanks buddy, we are in ever lasting debt with you. Many grinding thanks!!!! Norman and Apathic printed 500 and we GETUPANDKILL Music printed 1000.
One other thing I would have liked to do was change all the print from English to German; I thought that would have been a cool original twist to the CD. Maybe next time.

Why did Koko Lopez quit his job in the band? I think he did a great job on the album! By the way great stolen front cover he did for the CD, LOL. And what about the new drummer? Matt of the dead.

KoKo departed because his out side life was just way to busy. He had a job that worked him 50 to 70 hours a week, and a new born baby, and another baby on the way. He had a lot of responsibilities at home. I am a father of 2 as well, but both of my children are older now, and are able to take care of themselves if I am away form the house. KoKo has 2 brand new little babies only year apart from each other. And a great paying job. KoKo will forever be one of the best drummers we ever got to work with. We love ya man! HAHAHAH, yes we did steal the front cover, and then just made it our own, KoKo came up with the concept, put it together and then we had a friend of ours alter it and give it that grainy dirty look to the CD (www. myspace. com/gregthebass) Ascension graphic and design.
Matt was actually the person who recorded our CD at his studio “Mile High Music”, we have worked with him the past, and have gotten to know him through some mutual friends. It was only obvious we would ask Matt to be apart of the band, he was a natural and picked up on the music very quick, we were doing shows within 3 weeks of him joining the band. We are looking forward to working with Matt on all future projects! We will enter the studio in the next couple months to start recording for our new release, which we plan on doing a split CD with another grind core band called PARASITE HILTON (www. myspace. com/parasitehiltongrind). They asked for a bio, and we didn’t have one because we never thought we would win, so I said fuck it, let’s just be goofy as hell, so I wrote up that bio making ourselves into Zombie Pirates, I’m glad you got a chuckle out of it, we thought it was funny as well. HAHAHAHAH… see now if I told you where the treasure was then there would be no treasure any more, the curiosity of it all is that there is a buried treasure and you don’t know what is involved in it. And whose treasure is it? For all you know it could be filled with porno mags and horror video tapes. Now you tell me, does that sound like a treasure for everyone, or will you seek out the truth to find the treasure and see for yourself what is inside? HAHAHAHA.

And who the hell are John Elway & Michael Shanahan. Both guys are mentioned in this bio. Give our readers a short overview about this crazy story!

AHHHHH, glad you asked, see now when I wrote that, I forgot to involve the European readers. And familiarize people that every one knew. John Elway was the quarter back for the Denver Broncos, and Michael Shanahan is the head coach of the same professional football team. I dropped their names in there so the story would familiarize itself with Denver Colorado more. People who are into the American professional football know who they are because they are back to back super bowl champions. The super bowl is where the 2 best teams in the NFL (national football league) battle for the championship and to be recognized as national champions. The Denver Broncos did that twice! I have Nic cussing over the phone at me as we speak right now on how much he hates the Denver Broncos, so I better let everyone know that not all Colorado natives like the Denver Broncos professional football team.

Let’s talk about zombies! Where has this genre and its fascination come from, why is it so interesting for you? Because it’s bloody, funny or it deals with social-critics?

Zombies in general are just fucking creepy. I think Dennis Hopper said it all in the movie Land of the Dead… “zombies…they creep me out”. I mean the thought of being chased by dead people who all they wanna do is have you for dinner is just fucking insane I think. Being eaten alive!!!! Fuckin AHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! Dude SCARY! And we have always just had this fascination with the walking dead; the movies are fucking scary man… truly scary… Some movies are funny, some are horror/gore based, but for us it’s the creature as well… spooky sons of bitches they are.

Do you like the “new wave” of zombie flicks that hit the video-stores in the last few years? Or are the old 70’s/80’s movies your favorites?

You know I think we are still pretty mixed on that. Now the re-make of “Day of the Dead” was a huge disappointment, I am still kicking myself for paying $20.00 US dollars for that pile of crap. The effects on today’s zombie movies are of course better, but when you think about it, you have to have respect for them older movies, Most of them were done on shoe string budgets, the directors and actors went through hell to make these movies, and when they were finally done and released they became classics!

What’s your opinion about the new versions of Romero classics? Have you ever believed, that Romero keeps up with his explicit style in Land of the dead?

Land of the dead was fucking awesome! That movie will be a classic soon enough! Just wait for it. And I will have to admit the new “dawn of the dead” was done pretty well. I took a couple times to get used too. But all in all it was pretty good. Night of the living dead-3D=CRAP.

What about the British 28 days/weeks movies? The genre needs a new direction to keep alive and fresh? By the way isn’t zombies allowed to run?

You know they were both pretty good, I kind of liked 28 weeks later and how it went into perspective of a land just laid to waste by this virus, and everything was like Armageddon. Seeing those places in a complete different state then what we are used to seeing was really cool I thought. Now the one father zombie chasing down his kid through out the movie was a little stupid, but other then that it was pretty cool.
Are zombies allowed to run? I suppose so, if their fresh zombies… just out of the ground type though I would say are a little to stiff for running.

What hits your nerves more, Romero, Fulci or the funny O’Bannon. Do you see appreciable differences?

I do see appreciable differences, Fulcci I think did what he wanted to do and that was repulse people, see how many people he could piss off. Romero does it as a craft, I think zombies are his niche’ though, and O”Bannon, Return of the living dead was HILARIOUS! Gore with comedy. I loved every minute! And all 3 men have the zombie hate brigade seal of approval! They have mastered their craft in their respectable genres! They all have made a memory, and are all known for their respected professions.

                Bub of course, he has shown that he can be a perfect living being, then die, and still        come back and be smarter.

- War for oil or for brain –
                 Good question! That is a hard subject! Especially here in the states, so many people    want them out, but are also afraid if we back out, then we are not showing our muscle, and the Al Qaida will not only attack patrons in Europe but come back to the U.S. So I say for right now, that we give em HELL!

- What’s the better snack for zombies? Politicans or pornstars?
                  Ahhhh, another good question. I think porn stars, because mainly they are useless human beings! There is not much of a brain in a porn star to begin with. At least a politician and work with somewhat of a “head on his or her shoulders”

- Who uses his brain more effective? Zombies or politicians?
                  I would say Zombies, for the fact that they are reanimated, hungry and pissed off! And still rise from the grave to look more intelligent then a politician. Politicians try to kill you with words that you have to go searching in the dictionary for. Please don’t insult my intelligence any more then it already has been and talk to me like a human,,,errrr ah I mean zombie.

Don’t you think your Bush is a zombie already? Have you ever looked in his eyes, seen his feeble-minded smile?

He does resemble a zombie doesn’t he? Now that I think about it. His eye’s are sunken in and his skin falling off, kinda gross, hahahahaha …
I don’t think he is feeble minded, if he was he would have never been elected president. But if he was feeble minded, I guess that goes to show you how smart we as Americans are. But Bush has done what needed to be done, either you love him or you hate him. I can agree with some of the things he has done, and I can disagree on some the things. But I have to respect him as my president. Even though many hate him, or many disagree, he is still my president.

Back to music. Why do you play this old school Death/Grind style? Is this your destination or have we some changes in the future? What’s your opinion about brutal bands going progressive nowadays, ABORTED, THE ROTTED (GOREROTTED)...?

We love the old school sound, we were brought up on the European style, death metal and grind core. This is what we have known to love and we do not want to switch. The record labels are all picking up on these types of bands nowadays, and they will soon realize that it is on its way out just as fast as it came in. Bands like ZOMBIE HATE BRIGADE, PARASITE HILTON, ONE PER COFFIN, CARRION CRAWLER, DISMEMBERED FETUS, MOLESTER, NICARAGUAN DEATH SQUAD, and are all here to kick ass in the name of metal and take the name metal back! These bands do not deserve to have their music listed as metal! I am so fucking sick and tired of hearing and seeing these new bands pop up by the minute, with their dumb haircuts and their little sisters pants on! Fucking hate that shit, and no I am not bitter with the fact they are more popular or are signed to a major label. I am pissed because they have the fucking guts to call themselves “metal”. There is nothing metal about making yourself look like a high school girl and playing pansy fancy riffs to make yourself look like a skilled musician. Their music is like the “disco” era of the early 80’s, it’s popular now, but will be crushed in the near future.
Now onto the band “The Rotted”. I am a huge fan of Gorerotted, and I have to say “Mutilated in minutes” is one of my all time favorite albums!!! I was anxiously awaiting the arrival of their new album, under their new name, The Rotted. I received the CD in the mail, opened it quickly and plopped it into my CD player to download to my I-Pod… I was amazed at how much the band changed, and in my honest opinion am glad they changed the name, they left their brutality with their old name. If I was to first hear The Rotted, I can guarantee I would have NEVER purchased the CD. Gorerotted is Gorerotted, The Rotted is a whole new band, and am glad they changed the name, cause they are a new band…
Aborted is another band that have changed their style dramatically, but have also gained a bigger crowd, it’s not that Aborted and The Rotted are not good, they can at least call themselves metal, and heavy, it’s just not my style of metal, at all. Wanna buy the new “The Rotted” CD from me?

No, have it in my collection already. Maybe it’s dangerous, going down in the scene if you do not come up with some new elements in the music, because the scene is amazingly big. A million bands playing the same shit. Don’t you think this development runs into a overkill?

I do unfortunately. And yet there are so many bands undiscovered, that is the beauty of the underground, maybe some day Zombie Hate Brigade will sign to a bigger label, but we will not force ourselves into a different format of metal, NEVER. We are going down in the scene the same way we came into it, playing what we love, death/grind music, that is it! It is an overkill, but these bands are playing what they wanna play and that is by all means “METAL”!!!!!! They are playing for themselves whether they suck or not, they are playing what they wanna hear!!!!!
