Questions to
artist Jake of Tales of Uranus (gore gore comic books!).
(April 2002)
Braindead:
You
fine today?
Jake:
Always!
Braindead:
What's the reason why you started doing Tales from Uranus;
Did you already
do stuff in this vein before?
Jake:
Well, mainly because of my own desire to read nasty
comix. But, I couldnt find any I liked, so I started
my own. Ive always drawn sick comix and gross art,
so the current vein of Tales from Uranus is really just
a combination of all my interests: horror and trash films,
goremetal, and sick humor.
Braindead:
How long have you been drawing?
Jake:
Ever since I can remember.
Braindead:
Do you read/collect comics yourself?
Jake:
Not really. I just re-read through my collection of
old 70s comics. Those are my favorites.
Braindead:
How long does it take you to complete a comic, from start
to finish?
Jake:
Im not sure. It takes me awhile because I do everything
in the comix. I do the plot, pencils, inking, lettering,
coloring, printing, stapling, and trimming. I dont
have any help at all with the comix and I have a lot of
interruptions, so I dont really know how long it takes.
I have help with the interview section from my buddy Sly
in the Netherlands and he takes care of all that content
for me. It can takes months between issues. But the longer
it takes for an issue, the more stuff I end up putting in
it, so its worth the wait! Issue #6 is gonna be fucking
huge and fucking killer! Lots of comix, reviews and more
interviews!
Braindead:
What's your inspiration for such twisted storylines? Do
you write a story
beforehand or do you just come up with the story as you
draw?
Jake:
Both actually. I make little notes and a few sketches
beforehand and then while Im drawing it out I think
of other stuff. My inspiration is just my sick, twisted
mind and my love for horror films and wild music.
Braindead:
Will you ever do a storyline that continues from an issue
to the next, with
recurring characters and stuff? I think that'd be cool.
Jake:
I probably wont do that. But I wont say
never. It wont be likely for awhile though because
the issues come out too slow. But who knows? I might think
of a storyline in the future that I really like and decide
to give it a couple of issues or something. Right now, I
have way too many short blasts that Im having fun
with.
Braindead:
What's your favorite among the issues you've put out so
far?
Jake:
Im kind of partial to #4. That issue just came
out really good and I really like a lot of my art in that
one. The cover on that one is fucking great, one of my sicker
ones! The issue(#6) Im working on right now though
is going to blow all the other issues away.
Braindead:
You've started including band interviews in the last issue,
will you keep
doing that or some other things in this vein?
Jake:
Yes! And once again, I have to bring up #6 because that
issue is going to feature even more interviews PLUS reviews
AND even more color comix. Tales from Uranus is finally
going to grow into a bigger rag but it will always be about
the gore!!
Braindead:
Do you fave movies & your fave bands/records right now?
Jake:
Im always watching crazy horror and drive-in flicks.
I like too many to have one favorite. I finally got to watch
some Coffin Joe a while back, he made some wild filth! Just
watched Burial Ground for the 100th time last night, theres
some great gut-munching in that one. Buio Omega is a favorite
and I love Bloody Pit of Horror. Some of my favorite music
lately is Gruesome Stuff Relish, Ghoul, Brodequin, old Slayer,
Savage Man Savage Beast, old Motorhead, Exhumed, Mixomatosis,
LDH, lots more other weird shit.
Braindead:
And that's all I could come up with, thanks for doing that...
Any last
comment?
Jake:
Thanks for the interview, your site is one of the finest
around! All sick gore fiends can reach me at my website:
www.talesfromuranus.com.
But I like it even more when I get REAL mail so all freaks
and fucks write me at: Jake, 203 4th Street, Charleston,
IL 61920 USA. Send flyers too, I stuff all my comix orders
with flyers. Demos are welcome, just make sure its
gore or sick in some way and I will be sure to review it
in a future issue of Tales from Uranus. Everybody keep supporting
the sickness in the underground!!!!
