SAVAGE MAN SAVAGE BEAST
(May 3 2001)

Interview with Joey, by E-mail.
This is the stuff I play on repeat for several days now.
Gotta be the most exciting and fastest grindcore crime in a while.

Can you remember what you were doing with your life before SMSB?
"Yes, much the same really, cos SMSB isnt really my life if you know what I mean. Its just like a hobby for me, because I love music and I am a creative person. So like one person will pour themselves a coffee, light a cigarette and paint a picture, I will drink buckfast and then make some musick."

You sometimes go very far with your mix of grindcore and techno. Do you really think keeping it up bonding the two together in the future? Any negative response because of your special sound?
"Honestly Pierre I havent taken it as far as I want to yet, but yeah, I think that because I am using a sequencer to record my music then it will always have a cold, hard, techno-ish feel to it. I am so heavily into the hard, fast end of techno music as well. I just love it. I havent heard much negative responses to SMSB in particular, although I understand a lot of purists hate the style in general. Please remember this though, there's a big difference between what I'm doing and what a dull death metal band suffering a mid-life crisis is doing when they decide to 'go cyber' or whatever. I know you compared my stuff to Libido Airbag Pierre, and that's okay because they're very experimental too. More experimental than SMSB in fact. But I think my number one influence and reference point is an old GBN promo tape. That just totally blew me away."

You experienced both being a one-piece "band" and.. huh; a band with more members. Is it easier to be alone to do everything or not really?
"For me its better to be alone because I have a lot of off-the-wall ideas and if you hear any SMSB stuff from before you will see that it is very conservative and traditional in comparison to nowadays. I can also say, however, that there is nothing better (well not much anyway!!) than jamming    with your mates in a rehearsal studio. The thing is, I have always been the sort of person to stay up til the small hours working on music, trying out different ideas and stuff, so to have total creative control is great."

Are your vocals meaningless barks or do you sometimes write lyrics? Is each song title a reference to something or means something to you, becausesome of it sounded pretty obscure to me...
"Ha ha yeah, a lot of it is just pure shit off the top of my head. But I can say there are proper lyrics to a few songs, and you can usually hear them if that's the case. Its good that people read the titles and don't always understand it, cos I have been trying to do something weird and individual with them. I can say that I was inspired by the Japanese scene of the mid 90s. My song "Cryptosexual Ungan" was originally called "Cryptosexual Ungan Neophallic Torsion" as like a tribute to bands like CSSO and CUM, in fact."

The compiling CD you sent me works like a fucking solid album. Can people get ahold of it from you?
"Not at the moment. I really don't have the time or money to be answering letters and sending packages everywhere but if anyone would be interested in distributing it for me please do get in touch. Anyway, I try and put as much mp3s on my site as I can so people can get the stuff for free anyway. But I do know you can get quite a lot of those tracks on the split tape with DH, which Kyle is selling for $3(US)/$4(world)"

What can people expect from your zine, Needledamage? When do you feel it's gonna be ready?
"This is a sore point for me because I have been disappointed by the number of replies I got to my interviews. I don't know if people have changed their address or what. Anyway I cant say for certain whether or not Needledamage will ever come out but I can tell you if it does it will be something different from the usual. It will have NO serious interviews and even then, only about 30-40% of it will be interviews. I want to do a lot of writing myself, articles and stuff. I have a lot of original ideas which I hope one day to actualise."

Is SMSB time-consuming. & What else do you to pass the time?
"I think in January of this year it took up most of my spare time because I was writing and recording like hell but since then, not really. My other interests. well really Im just a quite normal person. I really love great films and many different kinds of music. I love going out, getting drunk, watching football. loads of different stuff."

I'm a veggie and my fave movie is Cannibal Holocaust. Do you think the two can mesh or should I drop one of them?
"Ha ha well I think a lot of veggies would freak if they had to sit through that one but hey the way I see it is. CH was made many years ago, what happened happened, and watching it today is hardly causing animals to suffer. That's not to say I condone killing animals in the name of entertainment, because I don't, but personally, there have been other films which left a far worse taste in my mouth."

I'm fucking sorry I'm already out of dull questions! It's such a loser questionnaire. But... the shorter the better. I thought you could maybe interview yourself, but that would be dumb as hell...... so finish as you wish....
"Okay Pierre, just thanks a lot for this int and for your great SMSB review, that meant a lot to me, mate! If anyone out there wants to work with me on a split tape with SMSB just get in touch cos I am nearly always interested in that. Other than that, everybody just chill out with a beer and an old ENT record and we can all be happy."
