"Offal - Anal-Thorized Autopsy"

Hey, what's up in Brazil?
Ohhh, everything is okay here! Really nothing special but we keep trying to get it better!
Offal's line-up has changed a lot it seems since the beginning... Can you introduce the current line-up? How long have you known each other? Do some of you come from other bands?
Yeahhh, we had some line-up changes along the way but just a few changes actually! We started our activities like a trio: André Luiz / Vocals, Daniel Azevedo / Guitars and vocals and Chrystian Mass / Drums. Offal today is: André Luiz / Vocals, Tersis Zonato / Guitars and vocals, João Ongaro / Bass and Eduardo Tobe / Drums. About other bands just me and Tersis Zonato are involved in other bands and projects, Lymphatic Phlegm and Lutemkrat respectively! João Ongaro also plays in a local Thrash Metal band called Terror Scream and did some participation with Tersis Zonato on some local Black Metal bands! And I’m running a side-project with Tersis Zonato called Creampie that’s totally into porno stuff, a rough mix of early C.B.T, early Gut and Rompeprop, we’ll have some stuff out next year for sure, watch out!
Offal's main influence is obviously Autopsy... Did the band's sound stayed the same though the changes? Does the new material continue in this vein?
When we started our activities still in 2003 as Orgy in Excrements, Autopsy always was our main and huge influence, especially for me and the other two founder members. Our 1st rehearsals that time, we were playing Autopsy’s cover versions (See Autopsy’s medley on our 1st full-length CD!). This band is really special and important for us and Offal starts its activities just to pay homage to them, especially for what they did and left for us!
As the time was passing by and we started to get line-up changes, the Offal’s Autopsy worship oriented style also got to change a bit! The new band members are also Autopsy fans, of course, but not like me or the early ones, so it’s explicit on the new music structures and on the new songs, just check the songs on the split with Bowel Fetus and you’ll know how it sounds a bit different of the s/t 1st CD! The songs are still old-skull but not ONLY with those Autopsy characteristics and atmosphere of our very beginning!
On the upcoming CD these differences will be even more notable ‘coz there's many influences over the new songs, especially on the Ongaro’s ones. It still fuckin’ old and with all that late 80’s / early 90’s characteristics but not with that restrict Autopsy focus anymore!
How far along is the new album coming? How many new songs have you got? Will this come out through "The Hole Productions" like the first CD or do you have another label in mind?
The new album is totally (de)composed and ready to be recorded, we hope to do the recording sessions next December or few more! At all it will feature 13 or 14 totally brand and unreleased tracks of disgusting, twisted and vile blood-splattering Old-skull Death Metal addicted to the splatter platters of the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s B-cinema and oriented to all that cult late 80’s / early 90’s Death Metal founders!
I don’t think so, ´coz we’ve recently released a new stuff via The Hole Productions and Renzo has other plans for 2009! I think that he can give some opportunity for other great and young bands that are just waiting a chance to put their stuff out! We’re still searching for a label to release the upcoming 2nd full-length CD but we’re already in touch with some of them and as soon as we afford the details we’ll inform who will put it out!

You also have some split releases planned, right? What Offal release should be out next? Are you also working on some Offal merch/t-shirt?
No, no, we won’t do many split stuff with Offal! We just did the split MCD with Bowel Fetus that firstly should be a split 7”ep and we got an invite to do a new split 7”ep next year. After this release I don’t think that we’ll do some new split stuff and there's some reasons for it; we spent almost two years composing the new album and as I said before it will be probably recorded next December or early 2009. It’s really hard to get a good amount of songs to do the whole album and we should need even more good tracks for extra releases, so… We prefer to concentrate the whole effort over the new album tracks and do it on the better way we can, so we hope to get it when we put the new album out!
The other band guys also think that a full-length album can be more expressive and significant than some split releases and the main point is that the genre that Offal is about, we think that Old-Skull Death Metal is addicted to few but strong and memorable releases! Some people can’t deal with this but that’s the way we think! Be sure, Offal won’t be a band of multiple releases, no way!
The first CD doesn't have a lyric sheet but still very sick song titles... Do you actual write lyrics for the songs? What's your inspiration for the imagery and everything in Offal?
Ohhh yeah, on the 1st CD we also did some lyrics for the whole songs but we think that they aren’t good enough to be featured on the layout so we prefer didn’t enclose it! For the upcoming full-length album the whole songs will feature its lyrics and we’ll print it for sure! On this time, we’ll have some really twisted and sick lyrics and some special ones by Electrokutioner (Decrepitaph, Skincrawler, Tombstones…), he really give us some great support doing some awesome lyrics for us! Hello Wayne, what’s up man? Thankxxx! There lots of things that inspires us to create the whole Offal’s image, lyrics and musick but especially late 80’s / early 90’s Death Metal bands (Autopsy, Impetigo, Goreaphobia, Demilich, Phlegm, Toxaemia, Old Xysma, Rottrevore, Revenant, Incantation, Bolt Thrower, Dismember, Pungent Stench, Necrony, Nihilist, Old Deceased, Sarcastic…) and underground B-cinema at all!
Sure that are lots of bands doing it nowadays and another ones that already did but we’re always trying to do something different and with our own characteristics and this whole old-school universe has all that we need to do something really great!

How often do you rehearse? In what kind of place? Do the Offal members live far apart? Are get-togethers difficult or actually pretty simple?
We costume to rehearse only two or three times in a month, always on Saturdays and on periods of one or maximum two hours! We really aren’t into stay hours and hours rehearsing, it’s really boring and tiring! On this way we got better results and the things got easier and faster. We costume rehearse on a local pro-studio that works on a rental system, we got one or two hours and we pay for it, it’s really practice and there we have all conditions that we need for a very good rehearsal! All band members live in Curitiba and on nearly places, so are very easy and simple to get together for the rehearsals and other similar activities.

How's been the live side of Offal? What are some of the most memorable shows you've played? Do you get some good crowd response? Are you anticipating some upcoming gigs?
Ohhh, live sets are always great! We did very few gigs, we costume to play just one or two times / year! Our drummer costume to stay travelling due to his work and for this reason we can’t afford many dates to play live, specially ‘coz he don’t know when he’ll stay out, he can be here today but not on the next week, so… This year we’ve played just two gigs: The Matter of Splatter 2 / Curitiba-PR (10/17/2008) & Splatter Night 12 / Joinville-SC (10/18/2008) and both were really sick! All our gigs were great experiences for us, specially ‘coz we’ve already played with great bands such as: Agathocles, Pulmonary Fibrosis, Stoma, Isacaarum, Flesh Grinder…
People costume to give us some great support at our live appearances, the freaks costume to be violent and the stage-diving and the mosh-pit circle are really intense, great, hauauauaua!

You're using hand-drawn artwork and design on the first CD... Putrid also did a new logo for Offal too... Will you continue in this vein for the new album, etc...? Will you use Putrid for your cover art or someone else?
Ohhh yeahhh, except for the 1st full-length CD, Putrid did our whole artworks (Logo + Cover for split MCD with Bowel Fetus). We’ll keep working with him for sure especially ‘coz he’s really into the Offal’s way of gore! Putrid exactly knows what we need for a cover and he does it with enormous precision! We have some good ideas for the upcoming album cover and we’ll let him about it! Putrid will do for sure a great and totally old-school inspired cover artwork for our 2nd full-length CD especially ‘coz the whole album theme will be addicted to late 70’s / early / mid 80’s Italian cinema and Putrid is really into B-cinema in general, so won’t be difficult to get a really inspired artwork from him! Putrid rulexxx and we’ll keep working together for a long time!
André, you're also doing Lymphatic Phlegm... How are Offal & L.P. different to you in terms of composition, rehearsals, etc...?
Ohhh there’s no comparison! It’s really very, very different, the process is totally different! The main point is about the difference between the members, we’re always trying to do the same things but there are some notable “taste” differences between us! On the most time things are okay but some times there some “troubles” but we’re always working to get into a common point, to get an idea that is okay for us all, so just on this way the things happen commonly.
The rehearsals are also totally different ‘coz with Offal we do a common and regular band rehearsal, high volume, drums, vocals… and with Lymphatic Phlegm the rehearsals were just me and Rodrigo in front a PC with a small guitar amp without no vocals ‘coz I did just low vocals, only to put the lyrics over the song and with the drum machine sound coming from the PC multimedia kit, so… We play it very low and for ourselves, we really never were a trouble for our neighborhood, hauauauaua!
"Show-Off Cadavers..." is probably Lymphatic Phlegm's masterpiece! It seems like your most accomplished work so far... Was it a lot of work to get this result? Are you satisfied with it? How's been the response to it? And also where did the anatomical pictures come from?
I don’t know, I really don’t know if Show-off… is the Lymphatic Phlegm’s masterpiece! We’re getting a very good response at all but not like the early stuff specially Pathogenesis Infest… On this late album we featured some old tracks from 2004 and 2005, tracks we did after the Pathogenesis Infest… release. The whole Show-off… song structure is more into old-school bands, into our early influences such as Dead Infection – Demos, Pathologist (See cover version!), Necrony, Exulceration, Haemorrhage (Emetic Cult + Grume)… The songs are bigger and with some different elements we had never used before (Ex.: Guitar solo), so… The work was similar like the early ones, we just spent some more time working on it ‘coz the last years were really hard for us due to the university effort! On that time we didn’t get much time to rehearse and finish the whole stuff for Show-off… so was really hard to get it ready to be released!
Ohhh yeahhh, we’re totally satisfied with the final result! Fernando did an awesome work as always especially on the cover / layout production, he did what we exactly want and the result couldn’t be better! Those pictures were taken from an anatomy book based on wax human body specimens. Show-off… has all that cold and lugubrious Lymphatic Phlegm’s atmosphere and the whole work was completed with the characteristic sound we got on it!
Another great and crucial point was the amazing participation of Dr. Morton Fairbanks / The County Medical Examiners doing that inner layout text for us! That words are really perfect, they really represents what Show-off… is about on its magnitude! It was really an honor for us! We hope to put out a LP version of Show-off… soon! I think it would look really impressive and beautiful, I hope it be possible for the next year!
Are you working on more Lymphatic Phlegm? What will be coming next?
No, no, unfortunately we aren’t working with Lymphatic Phlegm anymore! The band isn’t R.I.P but we’re totally out of work for a long time! The main reason is that Rodrigo isn’t living at Curitiba anymore! Rodrigo is an agricultural engineer and actually his is living / working on another city very far from Curitiba, still on our State but very far! So, as we can’t keep the old regular rehearsal processes we had to stop the whole activity with Lymphatic Phlegm! We don’t know when we’ll get back to work together again but we’ve some good plans for a 3rd album and some new split stuff too, maybe 2009/2010, I don’t know, I can’t precise!
When we’ve recorded “Show-off Cadavers…” we did some extra tracks and it isn’t released yet, so we still have some stuff to be out and to work on! Some of these tracks are on the split 7”ep with our country mates I Shit On Your Face (Goat Grind Records / Switzerland), thanks a lot for the nice comments about it Pierre! It was the 1st time I got a review of our stuff before it’s done / released, great! The other tracks will be on a new split CD on Black Hole Productions / Brazil to be out early 2009, the other band yet to be announced!
We’re still planning the LP version of “Show-off cadavers…” to be out early 2009 or few more, but it’s not totally confirmed yet! These are the only plans for Lymphatic Phlegm for the near future, just it!

Can you give me your current playlist? What are your current favorite bands & the latest records to blow you away?
Here are some bands we’re currently listening to. I got a short list from each one so… Rompeprop, Jig-ai, Destructive Explosion of Anal Garland, Gonorrhea Pussy, Neuro-visceral Exhumation, Expurgo, Cephalic Carnage, Misery Index, Cretin, Abscess, Ravenous, Ghoul, Japanische Kampfhoerspiele, Malignant Tumour, Municipal Waste, Bandanos, Violator, Life Is a Lie, Unleashed, Coffins, Krigshot, Disfear, Death, Suffocation, Marduk, Decapitated, Gorgoroth, Limbonic Art, Sotajumala, Rotten Sound, Metallica, Slayer, At the Gates, Cock and Ball Torture, Dismember, Rainbow, Riot, Sadus, Sodom, Ulver, Darkthrone, Dissection, Haemorrhage, Nunslaughter,…
