Interview with Radek of Neuropathia (September 2003)
Questions by Pierre

First, any particular reason for the name "Neuropathia"? I think you were originally called Bad Taste, yes?

Radek: Hello Pierre, there's no reason for the name, we found it interesting and here it is, sounding is good as well as spelling and meaning. Yeah we were called Bad Taste some years ago, but we changed the name after hearing something that in France or somewhere is band called the same, and that's why we changed it for NEUROPATHIA, I know that there's also band called Neuropath from Astralia but it's not the same.

How would you describe your music style? You seem to oscillate between grindcore and death metal, is that a good description?

Radek: Our point of doing songs is to make it catchy it doesn't matter if it's death or grind, just to make it catchy and mix it with horror/ gore feeling, you know what I mean. "Graveyard Cowboys" has got a lot of death metal infulences but it's still grind core, death metal infulences are good to make a catchy song but you can not brake the wall to let the song borring. We describe our music as GRAVEYARD GORE HORROR GRIND to make it sound stronger hehe, but your description is also good, anyway it's obvious that everyone see or hear the music in different way, some people will say that there's too much death metal and some that there's too much grind, I would say "Graveyard Cowboys" is for everyone who knows something about metal music.

I discovered Neuropathia with the demo tape from 1998. I really loved this tape and I remember playing it countless times... What happened since this tape & the Split Cd w/ Vampiric Motives? I think the line-up changed a lot, yes?

Radek: Yes, the troubles seemed to start durring the recording of the tape that you've mentioned. Our vocalist who had really deep throat after recording his lines said that he's not interested anymore into music and he had quit. Then we had new bass player and me on the vocals we've recorded stuff for our full CD called "Gore Stories" which wasn't good enough to put it on CD, it is my opinion my friends thinks deifferent, and also label who had to release it was not into our music anymore. So we've put unreleased CD into the shelf and started playing some gigs, there were several line-up changes. In 2000 guitarist has quit because of changing town and new members joined the band, they were and still are Thomas-guitar and Czarek-guitar and after few months of rehersals we've recorded stuff for next promo called "Night of The Living Dead" which was also thrown into shelf because of our dissatisfaction. Then we started to work our songs better and here you have "Graveyard Cowboys" recorded in the most solid in the Neuropathia history : Pierscien- bass, vokills, Czarek- guitar, Thomas- guitar and me psychoRadek- drums and addicional vokills.

I thought "Graveyard Cowboys" was a really good album... Also the sound production is really clear and powerful. Since when did you start working on this album? Are you satisfied with the result? Can you say something about Selfmadegod, the label which is releasing your cd?

Radek: Only was? hehe no I hope it is a good album heh. Yes I'm satisfied with the result, we wanted to have it clear, but powerful, we have to say thanx to our bass player because all sound that we managed to do was partly his credit. Some songs are a little bit old but I think that whole CD smells with something new, I am not talking about music because it's hard to release something really extraordinary but about production, HERTZ studio have done brilliant work. SMG is not so old label but it slighty becomes one of most active label from Poland, Karol, owner of SelfMadeGod rec is very honest and reliable person. He's doing very good promotion for his bands, at first I didn't knew a lot about him but now I think he and his label are really good.

Why did you only use band pictures and no artwork/or some other kind of photo for the cover of the cd?

Radek: We thought that it would be interesting to give our faces on the cover of our CD insteed of something else. Cover of our CD looks like it is a Pop band what makes our band more interesting in a funny way. I think putting gore pictures on the covers gets a little boring you know, and it's hard to find something new, you know if you will found sth really good and you will try to create from it something different like it was on i don't know Carcass "symphonies ..." it really kicks, but if you just put a picture of dismembered man or woman it sucks. It's allso great when you have your own painter who creates your own style that people will associate you with it but sorry we haven't found anyone who can do sth like that.

What are your musical influences? Can you list your Top 5 Releases of all time?

Radek: Here's my top list, it sounds really like I could be from pop band but it's ok, I like pop music:
-Frightmare- midnight murder mania
-Rotten Sound- murderworks
-Rancid- and out come the wolfs...
-Blood Duster- everything
-Misfits-everything
Neuropathia is influenced by almost every grind band starting from 80' till today.

Do you already have an idea what you'll do next after this full length album? Any upcoming releases in the plans?

Radek: I think soon we will start recording of our stuff for MCD and some splits, we're still looking for some label which could release "graveyard..." on LP. The only one certain release for today is our MCD with new songs which will also contain remastered stuff from split w/ Vampiric Motives.

Can you comment (even briefly) on some of these Neuropathia releases: Split Tape w/ Malignant Tumour, Split Tape w/ Abreast, Demo 97... Also the Split 7" w/ Mixomatosis, Split Tape w/ Autophagia... I haven't heard all these releases, but it seems you often re-utilized the material from the Promo Demo 98 which you also used for the Split Cd w/ Vampiric Motives... Any reason why?

Radek: Ok I'll try: split w/Malignant Tumour (contains our 4 songs recorded only for this split), split w/Abreast (contains few songs from our demos and some live songs), demo 97 ( after this demo we've get first proposition from the label, this demo contains songs that were recorded again in different studio on our next materials), split w/Autophagia and w/Mixomatosis ( contains some songs from promo demo). We have done this to promote our band as much as we can we didn't wanted rip people off but just appear with bands that are close for us.

Do you like playing live? What were some of your most memorable live gigs? Did you play any gig this summer? Any live show coming up?

Radek: Yes I like it very much I every one who is in some kind of a band likes it. The last set on the Obscene extreme was very memorable because it was first time for Neuropathia playing for such a big crowd. This gig was our last and only durring the summer because I was in U.K. so wasn't able to play. For today there's no upcoming gigs maybe few in Poland but we still look for some contacts from the abroad to play there live, if somebody is interested please write, we're open for your proposal.

I think Poland regroups some of the most interesting grind bands today: Neuropathia, Squash Bowels, Rzeznia... and the now coming back Dead Infection... These are the bigger names... Can you suggest some lesser known polish bands that deserve more attention?

Radek: Thanx a lot for good words there are some more good bands in Poland for example Toxic Bonkers and Frontside which really kills. I think these bands are really worth you and readers attention.

I've seen the band described as "horror" grind... What are some of your favorite horror movies? Favorite zombie movies?

Radek: There's a lot of my favourite, and propably there's not too much place for me in this intie talking about horror/gore movies I adore. I still haven't seen everything but I'm collecting as much as I can get, but here's a few that fuckin' kills me: Gates of hell, From beyond, Re-animator, Phantasm and many fuckin' more. I love movies from Brian Yuzna and Stuart Gordon and whole Italian Gore cinema.

Do you write lyrics? Some of your songs seem to be about horror movies... "Cemetary Man": is it about Dellamorte Dellamore? "Uncle frank": I guess this one is about Hellraiser, right?

Radek: Yes I have wrote whole lyrics for this CD, and yes song are inspired by horror movies. I try to write almost every song inspired by some movie, it's not ripping off but writing about thing that I love. Titles that you've mentionet are about those movies, you're right.

Ok, that's all I've got! Thanks for doing this... Any last comments?

Radek: Thanx Pierre for this intie, hope people will know more about Neuropathia. Thanx for all freaks interested in us, take care, watch Horror movies and kill for Neuropathia hehe
