Interview with Susumu of the Japanese grind/gore band MAGGUT by Billy Nocera (September 2003)

Hey, tell us about how MAGGUT got together. What was your first recording?

Well,I (drummer)met Yosino(gore and bass ) three years ago at a gig.
We jammed for six months before I met Funakosi( guitar) at my workplace.
In February2002, we made our first demo together.

I hear a lot of older RGTE influences in your music. What do you think of their newer stuff? I also hear some older death/grindgore influences, from bands like XYSMA, CARCASS(of course), and others. What are some older and newer bands you guys like?

We were influenced a lot by RGTE's old stuff and though we still like their new sounds.
They are no longer part of the goregrind genre which is a shame.
We are also influenced by CARCASS, IMPETIGO, DEADINFECTIONAN.D, GUT, ASSUCK, G.B.N, S.O.B, TERORIZER, E.N.T, AGATHOCLES, B.T, MORBID ANGEL, SLAYER, CARNAGE, CELTIC FROST and so on.
We like IMPALED, HAEMORRHAGE, EXHUMED, L.D.H, DISGORGE, SANITYS DAWN as well.

Seems like MAGGUT plays a lot of live shows, tell us about some of them.
Are you friends with CSSO, GORE BEYOND NECROPSY, etc? Do you guys like CATASEXUAL URGE MOTIVATION?

We don't play a lot of live shows, maybe, once a month,or once every two months.
We always enjoy playing with cool grind bands.
We are really looking forward to the next gig with DEAD INFECTION in November.
Members of Japanese grind bands are very cool, in fact we are good friends with CSSO(BUTCHER ABC),G.B.N. Unfortunately,we don't know much about C.U.M. But C.U.M. sounds is killer !!

Tell us about your upcoming split 7" ep. How many songs does it have, what are some song titles, etc.?
Any other split ep's you have planned?
Do you guys plan to do a full CD one day?

This split 7" ep with INTUMESCENCE from Holland will be released by German label FESTERING DEATHFUCK DECOMPOSITION.
There are six songs, five of them are new songs and one is re-recorded.
Song titles are, maggut swarmed gut, victims of minchslauter elephantiasis of the testicle, ultimate torture recurrence, putrid slut fucking fire and total disablist murders inexorable bloodshed assault, ...hehehehe
For our next release, we are going to join a Japanese OSAKA grind compilation album, after which we are going to release something through Bloodbathrecords.
We hope to make a full album someday.

Will you guys always have pitch shifted vocals? I really love the style of vocals you guys have, hope you won't change it! Also, you have a great, down-tuned guitar sound. What influences your playing the most?

Yes,we'll always have pitch shifted vocals. We'll never change our style. Thanks for your positive feedback.
Our guitar sound is strongly influenced by CARCASS.

What do you think of the current underground death/grind/gore scene?
Who are some of your fave bands and labels?

The Japanese underground death/grind scene is especially small and there is absolutely no gore scene.
Actually, there are a lot of excellent grind bands and labels in Japan at the moment.
For example, UNHOLY GRAVE, G.B.N, BUTCHER ABC, REALIZED, D.I.E, DISGUST, MORTALIZED
are cool bands.
OBLITERATION RECORDS, BLOODBATH RECORDS are cool labels.

Do you guys prefer real drawn artwork, or real-life images of death/gore?
Do you have any favorite artists, or writers? Like any horror films?

We like real-life images of death /gore.
Our artwork depicts dark images of cruelty and horror.
We think this style closely corresponds with our sound.
We don't know much about artists or films but we do love H.R.Giger.

You guys are going to be on the GUT tribute CD. Tell us about this!

GUT is one of our favorite bands.
So, we jumped at the opportunity to contribute to the CD.
We were flattered by the offer.

Any other new Japanese grind/gore bands you would like to talk about?

As we said, there are practically no gore bands.
But, there are heaps of imerging grind bands so many so we can't check them all out.

That's all for now, thanks for doing the interview and keep up the great work with MAGGUT!

Thanks so much. stay SICK !! KEEP GRIND!!! contact MAGGUT at
