How did the band get started & how did you get into this style of music? Does everyone in the band has pretty similar musical tastes or not really? Have you been in other bands prior to G.O.D. or are you currently in side bands worthy of note?

I started out as a total metalhead. Death metal, black metal and the like was my favourite. I also liked Grindcore but hardcore and punk were of little interest. Eventually I became more into Grindcore and started to identify more with things like grind, crust, power violence, fast core, hardcore ect.
The band started out as a shitty bedroom one-man goregrind project. I say shitty only because the production quality was laughable – not even raw, just terrible. But I was not serious about what I was doing, just passing the time. Still a lot those songs were good and made it onto or proper first demo ‘Neurofibromatosis’. We played a lot of them for a long time and re-recorded some later. From our material on the split with Archagathus, Human Vivisection, Dissected at Her Leisure, and Mulched Beyond Recognition are from that era. After recording a few of these shitty productions of my songs I approached Leezus who played drums in a grindcore band called FATO (Forever Annihilating the Obese) and he agreed to jam with me. As a result of this I ended up joining FATO on guitar (they had been playing with bass, drums and vocals only) so my career in grindcore really took off all of a sudden around that time. Later we got Steve (Esteve Decalisse) (ex Fuck the Facts) to play bass in G.O.D. and finally we had a full line up!
FATO was really thrashy grindcore band (we used to call it thrashgrind). One of the guys from the polish band Blood y Psycho was said to have described FATO as sounding like a cross between Napalm Death and Wehrmatch. There was a real comedy element to the lyrics. The band name was pretty ridiculous and certainly questionable but like happens a lot with this music you come up with a name when you are not serious about what you’re doing and then it sticks. They formed the band in 2001 when they were very young and just trying to be obnoxious. Things changed a lot in 8 years. In 2009 we got some really sad news. The bassist and main riff writer of FATO Michal Majewski died in a mountain climbing accident while he was travelling across Canada with his friends, Mudlark (great doomy grindcore band of Vancouver). He was one of our very best friends and this was devastating for us. As a result of this, G.O.D. became our main band and we immediately asked Dan who was the vocalist of FATO to join G.O.D.. Recently Steve left G.O.D. to join Mesrine (congrats to him!) and Dan picked up bass duties (three piece again!).
As for current side bands, yes there are many! All three of us play in Avon Dealer which is kind of a death/grind/goregrind project (www.myspace.com/TheAvonDealers. I play drums in a hardcore oi punk band called Indictable Mischief but we don’t have a link for that yet. Dan plays bass in a thrashy punk band called Twisted Fister (www.myspace.com/twistedfister666). Leezus plays drums in a crust/hardcore band called Crazy Bomber (www.myspace.com/crazybombercrew).
As far as music taste goes we all like similar kinds of metal, hardcore and punk but there are definite difference in our tastes as well. For example it would probably surprise a lot of people to find out that I enjoy a lot of electronic dance music and some other things that have nothing to do with metal or punk. Dan listens to a bit of everything it seems from rap to folk to black metal to grindcore. Leezus listens to a lot of 70’s rock but he is probably the most tr00 of us all hahaha.
Any special meaning to the anagram G.O.D.? You're not into god are you? Did you have any alternate/rejected ideas for a band name?
The meaning of the acronym is simply Grotesque Organ Defilement . It does not have any special significance to us. No we are not into God! I came up with the name a long time ago before it was even a production, 2004 I believe. I just thought it would be hilarious to have a band name where the acronym spelled GOD but each letter stood for something sick and disturbing. Once I started writing goregrind songs it just seemed natural to choose that name.
You have a bunch of split releases lined up... Which one is more likely to come out next?
Is the split with Intumescence still underway? This band would fit G.O.D. perfectly I think!
Yes we have a few things planned but unfortunately we have no idea when most of this stuff will come out because it is all in the hands of other people. I spoke to Pascal from Brain Damage (the label) last time we were in Montreal and he said he was waiting on Intumescence for something. I hope the split works out because they are a great band. Our material for that split is from the same recording session as our split with Archagathus and consist of the most ‘gore’ oriented songs from that session.
Are you thinking of doing a full length album sometime or is it too early to tell?
A full length would be great. I could see us doing it sometime in the future but it is hard to say when that would be.
What kind of place do you rehearse in? How does the song writing process usually goes on (who does what)? How do you record your stuff, do you go to a recording studio place or just self-record?
We rehearsa in a small town (village?) called Indian River which is a 20 min drive from the city where I live. This is where our drummer lives and we jam and record in his basement. So far our recording process has been pretty basic but we are getting pretty good at doing it ourselves. If you compare the split with Archagathus to the new songs we have streamable online you should notice a big difference in quality! But it was all done the same way, we are just getting better at it. We usually just use a couple of SM58 microphones, a set of drum mics and a 6 track mixer. We don’t record live, we do each instrument separately. One day we might record in a studio – for instance we would love to record with Jack from Mesrine someday.
With song writing, I normally write the riffs and lyrics. There are some songs such as Head Transplant and Dissected at Her Leisure where Leezus wrote the lyrics. I usually come up with some riffs and a basic structure to a song and show the band. Sometimes they have some ideas to expand on where the song will go. We have only writing one song by true collaboration and that was Red Flagged, one of our newest songs. I would be interesting to try more of that in the future.
Can you describe the area you're from, what's it like living in Ontario? What other bands are you pals with & stuff?
Ontario is an ok place to live but for grindcore it is not very ideal. There aren’t many people who listen to grind and fewer who want to play it in a band. Still there have been some great bands like Wadge, The Endless Blockade (RIP), Purity Control, The Vanishing Act, Fuck The Facts, Loathsome (RIP), Disleksick, Oxbaker and more. I just wish more people were playing fast music in Ontario.
We are buds with a lot of bands (not all Ontario) like Mesrine, Disleksick, Fuck the Facts, The Vanishing Act, Biological Monstrosity, Soil of Ignorance, Hard Charger, Wadge, and plenty more.
Politically, it seems to get worse and worse in every year in Ontario. Everytime there is a new politician in power it seems they are more conservative than the last. At the G20 the cops showed their true colours. Fuck this place.
What is your most memorable live experience so far, your best and worst one maybe?
Definitely the most memorable show is our first show ever which was in Montreal! We played with Biological Monstrosity, Xplicit Noize and Carbonized 16 Year Old Victim. It was very exciting to play our first gig in Montreal and the audience loved us and was really intense. Montreal is a city that loves grindcore and is not too stuck up to give a new band a chance (unlike Toronto sometimes). Also playing with Psycho (boston) and Six Brew Bantha was probably the greatest bill we’ve done! I won’t say a worst show but we use d to get asked to play a lot of brutal death bills in Toronto and I’m glad that has mostly stopped.
Your lyrics about human vivisection experiments from the Split EP with Archagathus are actually some of the most disturbing I've read in a while... Are you gonna keep writing lyrics in this vein? You seem to bring back a sense of social awareness to goregrind which is rare these days, kind of like early Carcass seemed to have a vegan message underneath... So is there an animal liberation subtext or not really?
The lyrics have changed a lot lately but yes you are right, there is a social context to what we do (most of the time). In beginning it was a mix, some songs were just fun horror themes and some were more serious. These days it is moving way more toward dealing with serious issues in our lyrics. We do deal with animal liberation a lot it is true. I am vegan, Leezus is vegetarian and Dan eats whatever but he is a former vegetarian. I don’t want to pigeonhole us as a ‘vegan’ grind band because that is really not what we are. We deal with a lot of themes these days – animal liberation, police brutality, pollution, capitalism, war and even just everyday stuff. I just find a way to turn the things I am thinking about into intense lyrics. A lot of this has an anarchist framework and that comes out in the lyrics.
When I write lyrics I often try to bring out a violent feel to them so they have a ‘gore’ element. Sometimes, though I don’t even bother and just speak my mind. If people don’t like that our lyrics are less gorey than they used to be, I really don’t care. Fuck off if you don’t like it, plain and simple. While the lyrics may be less gorey, the music rages harder than ever. These days I just call G.O.D. a grindcore band rather than a ‘goregrind’ band but obviously either label fits. There will always be pitch shifted vocals and a goregrind element with G.O.D..
Who did the awesome art for the Archagathus split? & Do you think you'll work again with the guy?
Adam from the stenchcore/crust band Contagium did the artwork for that split. Wow came out killer! We could be happier with the result and I would love to work with him again in the future. Here is a link to his art page: http://www.myspace.com/rancidoracle.
What are some goregrind bands that you're really into or influenced by the most? Your lyrics remind me of Dead Infection especially (Chapter of Accidents era), what do you think of their latest stuff?
As for goregrind Regurgitate, Dead Infection, Carcass, Retaliation and Last Days of Humanity are the biggest influences for me. Other major influences would be Napalm Death, Agathocles, Warsore, Dahmer and Disrupt. I would say those are the core influences but different songs have different influences too. We just recorded a bunch of songs and a lot of those had a crustcore/d-beat influence in them. I am writing new songs now and I am finding they are coming out with a lot of power violence/fastcore/thrash influence. I like to mix it up and bring that pitch shifted gore element together with different things.
I like the new Dead Infection material. I’m not one of those elitist types that like only the classic era of every band. Still they’ll never beat A Chapter of Accidents and the splits with CSSO and Malignant Tumour. They are always a fun band to listen to. These new releases are sounding good but it isn’t the same without Jaro. The new stuff doesn’t really keep me coming back too much but Brain Corrosion was killer!
What are some bands or records new or old that genuinely impressed you lately?
Usually I feel like I don’t have time to sort through all the shitty shit to follow new music closely. To answer your questiom, I will focus on newish releases because if we talk about old stuff it will take all day.
I’m really excited about the Lycanthropy full length album. They are such a killer band and for me this is the most exciting grindcore album to come out in a while. The newest Retaliation, ‘The Cost of Redemption’, blew me away. Best guitar sound! Last Days of Humanity’s Putrefaction in Progress basically showed every goregrind band that they suck and should go home! I really like Regurgitate’s Sickening Bliss too. Low Threat Profile’s Product #2 on Deep Six is a great new power violence/hardcore record. Super Fun Happy Slide’s The Undislodgable Nugget Scenario blew me away, such a great band! Wadge’s new album Grindcore Lu’Au is great as always! Insect Warfare’s World Extermination was sick as well. The Warsore discography cd is a long time coming! The newest Haemorrhage album rules. Also not grind but there is this black metal band from USA called Liturgy that I am loving. Their album Renihilation is great and I heard they just put out a new one so I will be checking that out. There’s more stuff but that’s I’ll for now.
That's about all I've got... Feel free to add anything you want...
