FUNEROT
is a new grind/death/thrash/bizarre freak metal band doing
some very original and fun sounding stuff. Definitely worth
checking out, especially if you're looking for something
a bit different than some of the other bands currently around
today. Don't forget to check out their cool web site when
you're done reading this! -Billy
Hey
you freaks, thanks for doing this interview. FUNEROT has
just released an awesome demo-CDR that
doesn't sound like anything out there today. I hear lots
of old thrash influences, mixed in with lots of MACABRE
style parts, along with some influences that I can't really
point out. Please tell us how the band got started, and
what has been your main inspiration?
Funerot
started out in 1982 as a post-modern art-punk folk band,
with our minds on our money and our moneys on our mind.
We thought we hit it big when we signed a three album deal
with Capitol Records but due to the extreme uncontrollable
flatulence our bass player produced during important A&R
meetings we were immediately black-listed from all major
labels and venues. Soon after, we squandered our remaining
funds on cocaine binges, cheap Canadian hookers, and moog
synthesizers. In 1993, having but $35 left, we were forced
into creating an A Cappella death-metal band that was briefly
signed to Roadrunner Records before it dumped all its real
bands (along with us even though we felt our sound was quite
marketable). We were devastated by our second defeat and
decided to call it quits... Until we witnessed the mass
resurgence of 80's bands that have reunited in the past
couple of years. We took this as our cue to jump in the
fire once again and bring Funerot back to life. Due to lack
of funds, we borrowed what money we could from our parents
to purchase the sub-standard equipment with which today
we use to create our sub-standard music.
You
guys definitely don't sound like any of the newer grind-gore-death
metal bands around today. I hear a great sense of humor
in the music also, that kind of reminds me of S.O.D. and
some of the earlier thrash metal bands. Was it intentional
to not sound like any other band, or did it just turn out
that way?
Dan:
The main reason we don't sound like any particular band
is because we rip off all of them(all the good ones that
is... well, mostly the good ones), so I guess you could
say it just turned out that way.
What
are your thoughts on some of today's death and grind bands
around? Any favorite newer bands you like? I'm sure you
have a huge list of older bands you enjoy, please name some.
Do you guys like any other punk, hardcore, or other kinds
of music?
Reuben:
We're all way into the Portland, OR bunch(Engorged, Lord
Gore, Bung, etc.) and Impaled is way cool. Also a bunch
of those Spanish bands are fucking rad.. But yeah, we're
probably more likely to be found listening to Megadeth,
Rigor Mortis, Deceased, Anthrax, blah, blah, blah. There's
valid and even good music in pretty much every genre so
we try to not limit our tape players to strictly metal.
We listen to stuff from Squarepusher to RTF to Shellac.
You
have one of the coolest looking logos around! Very cool
and very simple looking, but also very eye-catching. Who
drew your logo, and who came up with the band name?
Max:
One day we discovered our simple-minded drummer, Reuben,
doodling idly on a Saxon album cover. After we wiped the
drool off, we saw our future logo crudely scrawled across
Biff Byford's head and realized that somewhere in the deep
cavernous recesses of Reuben's brain, was a modicum of artistic
ability. We picked the band name out of one of Reuben's
unconscious inane ramblings.
I
heard you're also playing in a band called KILLATON. Any
information on this band? I heard it was a total 80's style
thrash metal band with songs about nuclear war, etc. I understand
it that you guys are big fans of NUCLEAR ASSAULT, OVERKILL,
etc.?
R: Killaton
is total thrash influence by the afore mentioned bands as
well as Testament, Annihilator, and all those rad 80's thrash
bands mixed with a hint of Sabbath/Stoner metal. We're in
the process of recording our first demo called "Doomlore."
Check out the website: http://www.killaton.y2.org
I
see that you guys have done a few live shows. Please tell
us about some of them. Do you guys have a following out
there? Would you like to do some shows out of state soon?
D: Most
(3) of our shows have been in garages. Before playing our
last show we went on a half-naked(lower half--pics coming
soon!), maniacal slaughter-spree, slaying enough hippies
to cover us with their blood. After playing one song, the
curse of the hippies lived on and made us stick to our instruments.
Fucking bitch! Our following consists of true, metal crusaders
and preppy, teenage girls. Just the way we like it. Seattle
cannot hold Funerot any longer. Next stop, Hades!! Then
Olympia.
R: Way
into travel... Preferred venues include garages, basements,
and backyards. Clubs are dumb... money sucks.
What
are some new songs you guys have written? What are your
next plans, releases, etc.? I would love to see you guys
do some cool 7" ep releases to really help get the
name out there. I think FUNEROT would look and sound really
killer on vinyl! Have you been sending promos to any labels?
(stupid question, since you did send a copy to our label!)
R: Our
favorite recording medium is vinyl so of course we're hep
to idea of releasing a 7". We've contacted SEND MORE
PARAMEDICS out of England about doing a possible split and
they were down so hopefully we'll be able to work something
out soon. We'll be sending out new promos after we've recorded
some new material (Our old demo was recorded with a drum
machine so it doesn't really represent us as a band anymore.)
You
guys seem to have good taste in films as well as music.
Name some faves, and also some newer films that you've seen
that you've enjoyed. It's hard to find good movies these
days, but lately I've been seeing a few that have been very
cool. Is anybody in the band looking forward to seeing Freddy
Vs. Jason? I wonder if this will be the ultimate crap film
ever, or a fun throwback to the 80's?
R: Dude,
that movie is going to blow. They haven't been able to make
a good Jason movie since part 7 and only the first 3 or
4 Freddy's were worth a damn, so I'm not holding out much
hope. I've given up on seeing new movies. It costs too much
and 98% of the time, you can find something better in the
$2 clearance video rack.. like Gladiator vs. Deathstalker
IV?... no contest! Deathstalker rules! Favorite movies?
shit.... Susperia, Bad Taste, Conan the Barbarian(best "big"
movie made past 1980,) Bladerunner, tons more. Right now,
we've actually rented all of the trashy movies they have
at the local video rental joint(I was so desperate I rented"Nudist
Colony of the Dead".. if you think it sounds cool and
promising.. think again.. it's a musical...yuck), so we've
been watching Megadeth's "Rusted Pieces" over
and over again.... David Ellefson is a dork.
Do
you guys collect any other stuff? Comics, action figures,
posters, etc. FUNEROT seems like a crazy, underground comic
book come to life! I really like the vibe of the whole thing.
D: Reuben
used to collect comics and owns over 2000 of em', Max our
bassist collects electrical equipment, and I collected factory-defected
candy bits until one day I got really hungry and ate them
all.
Well, those are my cheesy questions for the day. Good luck
with everything and I hope to see the band name around a
lot more in the next few years! Any final comments?
R: Thanks
for the interview, man! Check out the new mp3 of "My
Hammer Has a Crush On Your Genitals" and the music
video for the 1st track of our demo,
"Buttzilla".. Check the shit out on the website!!!
