Interview with Dave, Jay & Tom of australian Grind band Fuck... I'm Dead (July 2001)

So, the band is quite new. Any reason why you started it? Were you involved in other band or underground activity before "Fuck... I'm Dead"?
Fuck...I'm Dead is quite new. All up we have been together about 1 year. All of us had been playing in other bands before we formed Fuck...I'm Dead, bands like Arseripper, Open Wound and The Kill. There was no real special reason or anything why we started Fuck...I'm Dead... we were excited by the possibilities presented by using a drum machine, and wanted to be brutal as fuk, and thats about it... So thats how Fuck...I'm Dead came into existence.

How's Fuck... I'm Dead on stage? Do you use a drum machine for live performances too? Were there a good audience for the shows you performed so far?
We do use the drum machine live. It took a bit of getting used to, and we have encountered some problems along the way. But now it all works quite well. A lot of bands which use drum machines don't seem to play live or they use a drummer, so we were determined to make it work.
As far as audiences go, we have had pretty good crowds at all our shows so far. There isn't much of a grind scene here in Melbourne, so there is often a bit of a gap between shows. But over all it has gone down really well...

The Split w/ Sanity's Dawn is brilliant. Now, the next release will be something full-length? How do you hope it will be like? (How many tracks? etc...) Will you keep it the way it is on the Ep? Rather short songs, fast as hell?
We are pretty happy to have been able to do a split with Sanitys Dawn, they are one of the best gore/grind bands around at the moment. The songs for the Full CD are definately similar to the ones on the split, but have a bit more of a metal influence. There is a few really news ones though, which we think are heaps better, but still short, and fast as hell . We are hopefully going to have around 15 songs on the CD, so it might be more like a MCD, we'll see how we go. We might have a few more written by the time we record. There will be one or two older songs from the demo which we will record for the CD too.

Can you introduce everyone in the band? Hobbies, musical tastes, movie tastes, personality traits, distinguishing marks, drug-addictions, scars, tatoos, or whatever, stuff like that.......
The band consists of 2 short hairs amd one long hair. Tom (the only long hair) plays bass, is addicted to snatch, cleans a pub, and has a severe pooh fetish. Jay (short hair number 1) does the vocals, wears wife beaters(blue singlets), has some tough tattoos, and also addicted to turds. Dave(the other short hair) plays guitar, programs the drum machine, and rarely leaves this computer, because he's always on the prowl for shit porn(the drum machine is the only member not addicted to pooh)

I think the band name Fuck...I"m Dead is hilarious; or at least it makes me laugh. Is there a story behind it, or anyway... who came up with it?
There is no real story behind the name, I think I (dave) came up with it literally out of nowhere... we thought it was funny and suited the music we where playing so thats about it... pretty boring story...

Do you write lyrics?
Well...ummmm. Jay makes up the vocals... (whether there is words in there is another story). The song has a title well before the actual lyrics are made though. Usually over time the words/lyrics evolve, and start to relate to the title of the song. There is never anything written down or anything like that. We might try real hard and make up some lyrics for the songs so we can include them in the CD/MCD... maybe

Now about No Escape Records. I know it's also a distro, but is it basicly just a label to release Fuck...I'm Dead records or do you think putting out other bands stuff?
No Escape is still a fairly new label... and so far the Fuck...I'm Dead stuff is the only stuff that has been released. I am definately into releasing bands other than FID. There is actually something, (a split7" in fact) in the works, besides the Fuck...I'm dead CD/MCD, that will probably be out later in the year. At the moment, it is a secret.

Is it expensive to start and maintain a band and a label?
We already had most of the equipment (except for the drum machines), to start Fuck..I'm Dead. so that was good. We put all the money we make back into the band and even though it isn't a lot it pretty much pays for it most of the stuff we need like sending off shite, recording, new drum machine etc... The label on the other hand costs more to run, and to release stuff, but its heaps of fun and if you love grind its worth it!

Do you think Grind is getting as trendy as most other metal styles?
Its definately getting more popular recently but is still not trendy at this stage....yet, otherwise we would have more groupies.

Do you read zines or webzines? Do you think zines are important to the scene?
I read more webzines than zines. They are extremely inportant...anything which promotes the underground, and makes people aware of bands they might not have heard etc is crucial to keeping this kind of music alive.

What's your current playlist? Favourite bands?
Collectively as a band currently we are listening to stuff like: Contrastic, Impaled, Angel Corpse, Cock and Ball Torture, Sanitys Dawn, Discordance Axis, Disgorge, Human Remains, Sublime Cadaveric Decomposition, CUM, Slough, KLF, Engorged, Hemdale, Ingrowing, Get up Kids, Judas Priest, Cerebral Turbulencey, AC/DC

That's it. Thanks to Fuck... I'm Dead for going through all those dull questions... 2 times!
