Questions to
Iñaki of great spanish grindcore band, Denak.
(May 2002)
Braindead:
Ok Iñaki, you feeling well today?
Iñaki:
Hi
Pierre, yes, i feel good today. Just yesterday i arrived
from a small tour with my other band and now I have lots
of things to do here at my job. I'm listening to Wolfbrigade's
new picture Lp and it kills!!!
Braindead:
What
made you wanna contribute to the grindcore genre and get
your own band? What is Denak all about?
Iñaki:
When
i first listened to old Agathocles and Napalm Death's records
i started to have interest in this great music that grindcore
is. I knew that i wanted to start an own band and after
looking for the right persons to make it, we start to write
songs and now, eight years later, we are still here and
more strong than never.
Denak is about playing pure and simple grindcore in the
way it should to be, no metal or punk influences, just old
school straight to the point grindcore. We know we are not
the most original and technical band but we don't care,
we play just what we want, is ok when people say "hey,
you sound like all the old grindcore bands"...yes,
we know it bu is the sound we want for us. It's the best
review someone can tell us.
Braindead:
You're
about to go on a short european tour, how do you feel about
it? Do you feel experienced in the live area?
Iñaki:
Is
the most important thing we are going to make since we started
the band, we feel very happy and honoured when Laurel from
Yellow Dog asked about doing a tour. I want to say a BIG
thanks a lot to Laurel and Sven from Yellow Dog for booking
this tour for us.
I think playing live is not the best for us, our drummer
is a fucking lazy asshole and we are not a good band playing
live but anyway as Gerardo and me love playing gigs we always
do our best on stage.
Braindead:
There's a full length album planned. Please spill all the
details about it. How will it sound like? What label will
release it? If you can give away the title of a few songs?
that'd be cool...
Iñaki:
Yes,
we're now writing all the songs for it, it will have about
27-28 songs (all new) featuring a cover from our friends
Sin Dios. We will record it in the same studio where Looking
for an answer recorded their two records and we really hope
to finally have a good sound. Much better that on our shitty
10" or last 7" on Bim Records. The guy running
the studio knows how to sound in a good way so i'm very
excited about recording this new album in his studio. We
will record it after our tour, i think in June or July.
The cd version will be released by La Idea (the label i
run together with Canino from Sin Dios) and the lp version
should be released by Yellow Dog (if they still want to
release it).
We are writing the lyrics now so we still have this stuff
on the air, sorry for not given some titles.
Braindead:
Is
having lyrics in spanish a decision to keep an identity
of your own? What do you wanna achieve with your lyrics?
Iñaki:
We
have the lyrics in spanish 'coz is the way we talk in our
diary life so it would be senseless to have english lyrics.
Is the best way we can do it. To be honest, i don't understand
why so many spanish bands use english in their lyrics, is
the typical thing that heavy metal bands do to be "famous"
out from Spain and shit like that. Anyway, people can do
whatever they want, of course.
We don't want to preach nothing with our lyrics, just we
talk about stuff we hate, we see in life...and also some
personal stuff as well. If people want to take the lyrics
in a more political level is ok for us but we never talk
about politic in our songs.
Braindead:
Do
you know what Denak release got the better response from
listeners? Which Denak release was the most satisfying to
you?
Iñaki:
Just
the last 7" on Bim Records is the best stuff for us
and also for the listeners too. I know is our best stuff
but after listen it several times i'm not so much into the
sound we have on this ep. I know is the best sound we have
from all the records we released but is not the best sound.
Is better that in the 10" but we still can sound better,
i'm sure we will get the right sound in the new record (perhaps
not the best of the world but much better for sure).
I know people who love the 10", i also love that record
but it sound horrible for me. Songs from the 10" are
good but the guy from the studio where we recorded it doesn'
know to get a decent sound.
Braindead:
You've
put out alot of Split Ep's. What do you think is great about
this format? What made you release that many splits?
Iñaki:
I
really love vinyls!! And a 7" is wonderful!! The other
two members are not so much into the ep format but as we
get that offers to release it we recorded the songs for
it. I have to say that i prefer vinyls much than cd's also
so to have a vinyl of my own band is a great thing for me.
We've released all that split ep's 'coz people asked us
to do it so what is better than a record from your band?
Is normal, i think.
Braindead:
What
makes you record all these band covers? (Napalm Death, Ripcord,
Impetigo, Fear of God, Cripple Bastards) Do you think it's
an important thing to do? If you had to strictly choose
only one favorite band, which one would it be?
Iñaki:
We
love all that bands and we decided to record some covers
every time we go to the studio. In the past we always play
sme covers at gigs but now we're playing only a couple of
that covers. I prefer to play our own songs now. When we
play that covers people go crazy but we want people go crazy
with our songs, hehe!!
Is not possible to choose only a favorite band perhaps four
or five but only one is not possible.
Braindead:
Can
you talk about your label Upground. Why did you create it?
What releases have you put out so far, and what's coming
up next?
Iñaki:
Upground
in now on the air so i can't talk much more about it. I
work now in another label/record store that get all my time
so let's see what happens with Upground in the future. Anyway
i have some copies (very few) of the Machetazo/Abscess split
cdep so people can order it for 5 € / 5 $.
Braindead:
You
also play in the band Looking for an Answer which also have
a full length album planned. Isn't it hard to play in 2
pretty active bands at the same time?
Iñaki:
LFAA
is not so active, we have not rehearse since months ago
so don't know what will happen in the future. Is really
a sad situation 'coz is a good band, check out the first
cd out on Distortion and the upcoming split cd with Kontraattaque.
I play bass also in Like Peter at home, this is a real active
band, we are playing gigs every month and have toured lots
of times. Next june-July we will tour Europe with Milligram,
a fucking great rock'n'roll band from Boston. We just finished
a small tour through France and Spain together with Knut
and Keelhaul, a really good experience. Anyway, is easy
for me to be in 3 bands, now i have lots of time for the
bands so no problem.
Braindead:
Denak's
more of a social band, but still you don't seem to have
anything against gore bands, since you're good friends with
bands like Haemorrhage & Machetazo. What do you think
of the breach that's happening sometimes between grind/gore
people and grindcore people?
Iñaki:
Machetazo
& Haemorrhage are very friends from us and REAL nice
people. We're not much into gore stuff but i think they're
not 100% into gore, Machetazo is a mix of old school grindcore
with some old shool death metal touches and lots of agressive
stuff. And Haemorrhage have gore lyrics but musically talking
is grindcore with some sweden death influences. And also
this bands has not stupids homophobic or sexist lyrics and
attitude so long life to 'em!!
For me is ok if a band play gore or whatever they want,
the only thing i don't like from some gore bands are their
lyrics and attitude about sexism, homophobia and that shit,
fuck it!! I know lots of bands are using this kind of lyrics
as a joke but sometimes i see interviews in magazines and
it look not so much as a joke, i'm really against it.
Braindead:
Even
if the grind scene in Spain doesn't have so many bands,
they're all particularly solid acts. Bands like Haemorrhage,
Machetazo, Gruesome Stuff Relish & Denak are some of
the best grind bands in the scene, worldwide to me. What
do you think about it? What spanish bands really deserve
more attention than they get now in your mind?
Iñaki:
I
feel not so happy about this new situation in Spain, i explain
it: two or three years ago nobody was into grindcore, only
a few people like this kind od stuff but now everybody is
into it, is a kind of a fashion, i really see it in this
way. I'm not telling shit about the above mentioned bands
'coz i know 'em since years and i know they're really into
it but i know lots of people who doens't put attention in
Denak during years and now all they love Machetazo, Repugnance
and all the bands who play grind...ok, for me is a real
shit and big lie! Now everybody wants to have this bands
on their labels and it suck. I mean is a not real underground
thing. They see that to play grindcore is now cool so they
release grind bands...hahaha, fuck you all!!!!
Some spanish bands that deserve our atention are Cementerio
Show, Ras, Unsane Crisis, Perros Deshidratados, Zanussi,
Amoniako 87, Overpowering...get any record from this bands
if you have the chance.
Braindead:
That's
all I have! Sorry if I bored you to death with those lameass
question. Feel free to add last comments...
