Interview with Vikram of Conflicting Theories

First off, can you talk about India. It's really not common to hear a band, grind or whatever coming from India. Is there a scene in India?

India is a very, very large country with the world's second largest population! so people here just fuck and fuck and fuck some more!!!!hhhhaa..it is a really beautiful country which is going waste at the hands of corrupt politcians like everywhere else!!!
There is no underground scene here!!!! its very sad but there are hardly handful of bands which play true underground extreme music! most bands play 80's heavy/thrash metal, they are more image conscious (how they dress, what they look like) and play covers or horrible "so-called" originals which sound like very bad covers!people here refuse to listen to anything other than Iron Maiden, Slayer and Metallica!!!! They are not open minded and when we give them an underground CD to listen to..they are more like..hey, Metallica are cool...why are these guys singing about pathology/death etc!there are no platforms for us to play gigs,shows,concerts!gay-rock is what is accepted and people just love to dance to the beats!!!!

How and when did you get into grind & death metal?

i got into the scene about 13 years ago..when i was about 12 years old! I worshipped Black Sabbath and that was it...the people in my school told me i was insane...and people now after 13 years still say the same...am fucking insane!!!!! hhhhhaaa.... i got into Death metal around 10 years ago and grindcore about 9 years ago! Napalm Deaths-Peel Sessions was my first grind tape!

Why did you form Conflicting Theories?

3 years ago!myself and Jim always had this project in mind for quite some time and when the other 2 members from Dying Embrace were busy with work we got down to doing this!!!we have another project too..a real sick gore-grind project called "Gruesome Malady".it was planned 2 years ago and finally it is taking shape and we are getting material ready to record a demo!

Who are the members and what is ex-Engorged Ben part in the band?

We are a 3 piece band,Jimmy Palkhivala on Guitars, myself on Drums and Ben Vargas on Vox, we have a live sessions bass player called Samarth. Ben plays a real vital part in the bands sound and concept etc! we call him"the visionary"!!!! hhhaa

Your style is very bizarre and quite original. How do you compose the songs and what do you have in mind when doing so (influences maybe?)

Jimmy and Ben do most of the composing!!we have very crazy influences, each of us are into different styles and genres of metal,so you can say Conflicting Theories is an apt moniker..the convergence of various influences and styles. Jim is more into polished and technical death grind and metal,i love porn/gore-grind and grindcore anything which is filthy, raw as fuck kinda shit and Ben is into really crazy stuff!!so when we compose the tracks come out to be very, very twisted, bizarre and yet original!

The songs are intertwined with a couple movie intros... What are these movies? Are you a film buff? Do you have fave movies and stuff?

Yeah!!! we all are movie buffs!!!!Ben being the biggest among us! nothing like some great old sick horror films!!!! most samples on the album are taken from this particular movie-Vengeance Of The Zombies, we all have our own favorite movies, i personally love Fulci's City Of The Living Dead, Zombi Holocaust, Brain Dead and not to forget Evil Dead are among my best ever.

So; is there a Conflicting Theories release in the plans? Did you find a label to release your stuff yet?

We have a full length recorded with 16 bizarre mind numbing insane grind tracks, it is yet to be mastered,it was partly recorded here in India and in the USA, it was mixed by Ben at Black Lake Studios in the USA, we are looking for a label to release our stuff! we are sending out promo copies to lotta labels who are intrested in releasing this kinda bizarre twisted grind!!we had a offer to be on a split CD to be released by a Czech label but the material we have is soo unique we felt it can stand on its own on a CD!!

Did you already played live gigs, or are you planning to play live any day?

Yes! we have played live gigs! we dont have many happening here in India!most of them are held as stupid music competitions by universities and its really fun to go and grind the place down!!!

You have a side-band into doom.. Can you talk a bit about that?

Sure! Thats our first band,we play very dark doom/death metal!we have been around for 10 years now!i do vocals there and Jimmy plays the guitars!its called-"Dying Embrace" we have an 7" ep titled "Misanthrope" out just now thru French label-Legion Of Death!and our full length 12" "Serenades Of Depravity" will be out mostly by the end of the year through American label-Nuclear War Now!

And that's it I guess. Sorry, it's quite short... If I forgot to ask something important, feel free to address the issue now... Any last comment?

Mega-grinding thanx to you!! Pierre, for the interview!!all the best with your zine/label!!! you guys are the true life-vein of the underground!!!! support forever!!!! all bands/fans and supporters of the true underground..get in touch and email us..we reply to all mails!!
