Hey, first off what pushed you to start this project?! What bands influenced you... And how would you describe your music... Is it doom, is it grind is it beyond description?

Glen: Hey Pierre! Thanks for the interview! I'm not sure what possessed me to start recording really... I'd been playing guitar for a few years and had an obsession with bizarre
music, and when I bought my first computer I figured that it was time to contribute
Jayde: Bowel Fetus is Glen's baby. I liked it from the moment he sent me the 3" demo. Each time he recorded something new, I got me a copy and noticed there was a nice AUTOPSY influence evident and that gave the Bowel Fetus stuff some killer doomy leanings.
J: I would describe it as Goresoaked Doom/Grind
G: I couldn't have said it better myself
G: I started Bowel Fetus with a few bands in mind - Autopsy and Disembowelment (who I
tend to go on about a lot), as well as Impetigo... They're hardly unique influences, but you
can't say they're shit bands!
J: yep. all killer bands. Autopsy are legendary! but this has meant Bowel Fetus has morphed into something that I definitely consider unique.

How did you hook up with Jayde of Viscera and convince him to play drums for you? Is he
now an integral member of Bowel Fetus? I'm not clear on if you're getting together to play
or if this is this a long distance thing?

G: Jayde and I had already been friends for years... I'd been a fan of Viscera and a
customer of Prolapse Records for ages, and we had a lot of stuff in common that revealed
itself over time
G: We both love country music, for example
J: Glen and I have a lot in common both within music and outside of it. He didn't need to convince me. All he had to do was ask.
J: But I fucking HATE cuntry music. it's right up there with rap and hip-hop as shit disguised as
music
G: It was around the time that I joined Viscera... I guess there was romance in the air
J: Yes indeedy. We were in our courtship phase
G: We play together whenever we can, but yeah the distance is definitely a problem... right
now, we literally couldn't live further apart and still be in Australia
J: Yeah. distance is a bit of a hassle, which means we have to improvise and learn the songs
before we hook up so we can jam them out and record
G: We just send each other 4-track tapes or rough computer-recorded shit, and it's
working fine so far...
J: But it also forces us to be more productive when we do catch up.
G: I'm hoping he will stay on permanently, just as long as he gets over his country music
shit
G: The change in sound has definitely been a positive one
J: Fuck that. I was thinking of just buying a sampler and re-mixing other peoples songs. or better still. recording whole albums full of covers.

Can you describe the recording process on your newest stuff (and maybe older stuff too if there's a difference) in as much details as possible(!) I gotta say your guitar tone is totally
awesome... What kind of equipment, guitar, effect pedal, etc... do you use?! (Would love to
know!)

G: There's a pretty big difference between the old and new stuff... recently, Jayde and I
spent an afternoon recording in a rehearsal room on borrowed equipment here in
Brisbane. It was a really simple arrangement: five mics on the drums; one on the guitar
G: At the time, I was using a Behringer half-stack that had some cool built-in effects, but
I've since bought a much nicer amp so hopefully the guitar sound will improve on the next
recordings
J: Me drummer. Me know nothing of such technical speak. But I too really liked Bowel Fetus'
guitar sound. It was obvious from the very first recording and I remember commenting on it to him
once he'd sent me the demo. It's warm and fuzzy. Hence it makes me feel warm and fuzzy.
G: The earlier stuff was recorded using a different arrangement altogether - I was using a
Behringer V-amp (I should get a fucking sponsorship for this), lined directly into my
computer... no mics, no bullshit. I could just pick up the guitar, flick a switch, and start
recording immediately. I was using a computer program to sequence drums, so I'd save
them as wav files, import them into my recording software, and just record everything
over the top... it was easier, but I like what we're doing now a whole lot more

Your vocals are also some of the weirdest I've ever heard! What process do you use to
achieve this strange, strange sound?!!!

G: My vocals are kind of deep without effects, but with just the right combination of pitch-shifter and ultra high-end distortion, they come out sounding the way you hear on the releases... I've always loved sickeningly low, gurgling vocals (natural or shifted), so I thought it was natural to include them. I discovered that the pitch-shifter on my guitar amp works perfectly on vocals, so I can even get that sound happening live.
G: Earlier releases had clean vocals with so much reverb that they were practically inaudible, but I haven't used them in ages... it was hard to think of shit to say while I was recording because I never had lyrics, and I figured that there was a possibility that you could hear what I was saying (which was gibberish). At least with the low vocals it doesn't matter: I just croak like a frog and whatever happens ends up on the recording. I rarely do more than one take unless I sneeze or something
J: I read a review once saying they sounded like chains being dragged across the ground or some such shit. I thought that summed it up perfectly.
G: My girlfriend reckons they sound like a pig eating somebody... people are pretty polarised on them. Sometimes I'll read something that says they're awesome, and other times I read something that says they're shit and I don't know what I'm doing. Every grinding, clicking sound that ends up in the vocal track was not only put in there on purpose (I often have to dedicate an entire track to it) but can take a lot of fucking around to get sounding right without dominating the whole song. It's a delicate art, this singing...
I'm looking to take Pavarotti's place in the Three Tenors, but their manager hasn't replied to my letter yet
J: Keep eating those pies mate. you can sound the part, but you must also look the part. pies are the answer
G: It’s probably because my vocals are more baritone than tenor

Your song titles and art/imagery are utterly bizarre, sickening, often suprising and original
I think too. Are you aiming for specific imagery? What is Bowel Fetus all about? What are
your inspirations?

G: Thanks for the cool comment! I like to think that I don't write about the same old shit, but it's still the sort of stuff that comes naturally. Seeing that I don't have lyrics, titles are all I have to set the tone of the song. When I'm having trouble coming up with stuff, I usually ask myself "what would Jesus do?" and then do the opposite
J: There's a ton of bizarre references in Bowel Fetus' music. Take for example 'Mary Tofts Rabbit Meat'....
G: haha! Yeah, Mary Tofts was a woman in 18th century England enjoyed a brief celebrity as a woman who gave birth to dead rabbits... it turns out that she was secretly sticking the parts up her cunt before she called the doctors in to check her out
G: She's clearly my kind of woman

You seem to have tons of (split) releases planned... Are you confident about coming with
the material? Are you also planning to do a full length LP/CD eventually?

G: Yeah, we have a shitload of releases planned, and some in discussion that I haven't announced yet. Some are obviously happening faster than others, but (if I can help it) every one will be released. The material shouldn't be too hard to come up with... I usually rip most of my riffs off Immortal anyway
J: The frostbitten call of the wintermoon is strong in you Glen.
G: Call me Grim
G: I'd fucking love to do a descent full-length CD... we've done a couple that came close, but I guess it's arguable that 30 minutes is a full-length. There was a bit of talk of doing a CD on Bloodbath Records, but all that remains up in the air. I'd say we'll see some more on Prolapse than anything else, right Jayde?
J: Yep. The split CD between Bowel Fetus and Viscera will definately be out on Prolapse. As will the split 7" with Lincoln Love Log. That will be a co-production of sorts. We're sorting out the details for it now. Arranging the splits is usually Glen's domain, and we both make sure the material is ready for each new release.

What's your favorite Bowel Fetus release/material to date?

G: Tough question... probably Danzig II: Lucifuge
G: Hang on, that wasn't us...
G: I know it's predictable, but I really like the new stuff... I think the shit we've recorded together sounds better than anything I did on my own
J: The 3" demo is amongst my favourite as it was the first thing I heard and the sound made an impression on me. Beyond that I'd have to say the Death Womb Discharge MCD. It was here that the whole doomy vibe really took hold and gave Bowel Fetus a truly original life and shape of its own, and finally I'd have to say the latest shit we recorded together as it continues to explore this sleazy doom vibe even more
G: Though, from the old shit, I am still really happy with "Death Womb Discharge" (the whole album, not just the song) and the track I contributed to the split CDr with Basket of Death, Outhouse, and Rapist with No Penis
J: Oh, and the unreleased covers of Blashyk Mighty Ravendark and Through the Stormy Gates of Mist.

Are there musical genres outside of doom/grind you'd like to explore?
G: As in joining a band or something? Yeah, I'm a big fan of 80s industrial/noise/power electronics, and have flirted with a few projects over the last couple of years. Just recently I joined forces with a local bloke to play live droning power electronics, but we haven't gotten around to it yet... we're both trying to get our shit organised first.
J: I'm not interested in joing any other bands. I played a bit in a stoner rock band for about a year. We played a few gigs etc but nothing ever really came of it. 2 of the 3 members were always stoned haha. I listen to tons of stuff outside of Doom/Grind, a lot of Black Metal, shitloads of Thrash and old Death Metal, some drone stuff that Glen has turned me onto, and also a lot of indie/alternative stuff.

You posted really interesting videos of the first Bowel Fetus live experience... How was it?
Is it weird performing alone onstage? Is there any technical difficulties? Will future shows
have Jayde on real live drums? I hear you've been offered to do shows in Japan?!!!

G: Hey, thanks! I'm glad you watched them... unfortunately, Jayde couldn't make it to the
show, so I played using the old drum machine. It was a lot of fun, but I forgot how much of
a time-consuming nightmare it is to program them. I just hooked an mp3 player up to the
PA (which unsurprisingly froze up just before the last song and had to be rebooted... fuck
you Philips). Being alone onstage is natural for me though... that's how I danced at
Jayde's wedding.
J: He's a fucking great dancer man. It wouldn't be as impressive it it wasn't for the 70's pornstar
mow. that rules! Yeah, i couldn't make it for that gig, I'm not too fussed about playing live.
Never have been. But If we can arrange to play a few shows then i'd be up for it. That would be
Glen's domain though, so who knows.
G: Well yeah, I hope we can manage a few live ones with Jayde on the drums. I've been
talking a bit with a friend oin Japan to do a few shows over there... we're sort of in the
process of organising it. It would be a real shame if Jayde wasn't involved... he really
drives both bands (Viscera and Bowel Fetus, that is). The cunt gets everything right first
go!
J: Shucks dude. dunno about that. I'd certainly like to be involved though that's for sure. The
Japan thing we've spoken about for a while and would be killer. I'd rather fuckin' go over there
than play here.

By the way, I see you're coming back from Japan! So how was it, did you have fun there?!
Japanese grind, death & doom scenes seem pretty unbelievable!

G: Yeah, my girlfriend and I went over earlier this year. We had a really awesome time, and
I honestly can't wait to go back. If I spoke Japanese, I'd live there. The guitar stores in
Tokyo were incredible... Unfortunately though, I didn't get to see any gigs while I was there.
I was only there for 10 days, so I thought I'd be lucky to catch something. Iron Maiden
played in Yokohama the first night I was there, but I didn't go...
J: haha. I caught Maiden here in Oz- and fuck me IT RULED. Best fucking gig ever. As for Japan.
I've never been, so fuck knows. The bands that come out of there though rip.
G: There were so many European (not actually from Europe... I mean non-Japanese)
people there... it was really crazy! One of the friends of mine I was travelling with went,
and he said that the show ruled. So many of the Japanese people waiting to get in were
still in business suits because it was Friday night and I guess they came from work

What are some albums/bands that had the biggest impact on your existence?! When and
how did you discover grind & stuff...? And what's your current playlist & current favorite
artists?

J: great question. shit. albums that had the biggest influence on me...i'd have to say
Death-Leprosy, Xysma- Yeah, Bathory-Blood Fire Death and Metallica-Master of Puppets. I
discovered Grind via tape trading and radio. There was a cool underground radio show in
Melbourne (and some shittier ones) that would play Carcass and Napalm Death, whereas it was tape trading for bands like Impetigo and Meat Shits. That I guess was around '87/'88. Before that it was Thrash like Kreator and Hobbs Angel of Death. My current playlist would have on it Satyricon- The Shadowthrone, Immortal-Battles in the North, Burning Witch-Crippled Lucifer, Will Haven - Carpe Diem and Anatomia-Dissected Humanity.
G: I wasn't lucky enough to live in Victoria, or anywhere else as culturally diverse. I grew
up in a shitty town in Queensland, and I had to find so much out by pure luck. The first
death metal album I got was Cannibal Corpse's "Tomb of the Mutilated," which a mate of
mine got from his brother, who'd brought it back from the US after a holiday. I was 14 I
think... so I guess Cannibal Corpse started me off, though I don't really listen to them (or
any other technical death stuff) now. I still like the first couple of albums though... Anyway,
I happened to find albums like "Mental Funeral" and "Onward to Golgotha" in
second-hand CD stores in Brisbane, which was then several hours away from where I
lived. I also found "Acts of the Unspeakable" when I was in New Zealand.
J: Tomb of the Mutilated and Butchered at Birth are still killer!
G: I agree. I still have a fucked-up BaB shirt that I wear on occasion... it must be over 10
years old. Anyway, I made and maintained contact with labels and stores through writing
letters, and discovered heaps of other bands thanks to catalogues and mailing lists... That
would have been around 1996 or 1997. As for the current stuff: Rottrevore (everything),
Disemboweled Corpse EP, Blasphemy (everything), Sleep (everything), and Beherit (Oath
of Black Blood and Drawing Down the Moon). Not exactly "current," I know...

What about movies that you could say inspire you & Bowel Fetus? What's the last movie
you saw and blew you away?

G: I really love sleazy horror films and bizarre documentaries... There's just something
about them that I can't tear myself away from. I always have time for them. The last film I
saw that totally blew me away was "Seven Notes in Black" by Lucio Fulci... fuck that was a
good movie.
J: I trust in Glen to recommend me the sleaziest shit and to date he has done just that. But the
Best one I reckon I've seen is Island of Perversion. That is one fucked up film.
G: Fuck yeah, I love that movie too.

Wow, I see you listed Pixies as an influence on your myspace profile... Gotta say I love em
to death too! What's your favorite stuff from em? Do you dig the Breeders too? What did
you think of the reunion tours? Was it any good to you or FALSE... I got to see one of their
dates a couple of years ago so I was actually pretty thankful for it personally!

J: Gotta say Pierre we share a mutual love of the Pixies. The first few albums rule and I think
Trompe Le Monde and Bossonova do too! Don't understand why these get panned. I didn't catch any of their reunion shows, would have loved to, but it just didn't work out. I am also a big fan of the Breeders for sure and am the proud owner of their entire back catalogue. Oh, and you
forgot the Amps. Another spin off band band equally credible who release the excellent album
'Pacer'. I did manage to catch the Amps Live, not the same as the Pixies but still very cool
G: I'm also a big fan of The Pixies... they were the common ground that caused Jayde and I
to become such good friends. I missed the reunion shows because they didn't play in my
town, and I didn't have the money or time to travel. Plus I think all the interstate shows
were sold out by the time I got to thinking about them.
J: That's right. They sold out really fucking quick. the only tickets around were for the V festival
which had the stinky Pet Shop Boys on the Bill and be fucked if i was gonna go to that
G: hahahah! Pet Shop Boys! What a great band
J: Right up there with Lionel Richie and Gorguts hahahaha
G: hahahaah!

What are some of your interests, occupations and hobbies outside of composing sick
music?

G: Music is really my only main hobby, though I play a lot of classic video games
(especially Nintendo). I wouldn't say that's a hobby though... more of a distraction than
anything else. I'm studying at university and trying to set myself up in a research job, and
I'm also interested in mathematics. I was going to study mathematics at university, but I
decided that I'd have a hard time getting a job.
J: Same here. Music is definately my main hobby. When I'm not playing it, I'm usually collecting
it or releasing it. I try to stay active as much as time allows. Outside of music I just enjoy
hanging out with my wife and playing a bit of poker. Plus I'm a bit of an Australian Rules Football nutter and try and catch up with how my team, North Melbourne, is doing as much as possible.

Man, I'm pretty sure that's all I've got!!! Anything I've forgot to ask? Any last words?

G: Thanks for the interview Pierre! You fucking rule! Let's do a bloody split already! haha!
J: Cheers Pierre. Braindead has been a staple of my music literature reading for a number of
years now. Keep up the great work with both that and Blue Holocaust.
G: If anyone reading this wants to contact us, go to www.prolapserecords.com or
www.geocities.com/bowelfetus
J: And look out for the splits with Offal and Anatomia!
G: Shit yeah!
