Interview with Rob, drummer/vocalist of Bile (October 2005)

Can you introduce everyone in Bile? Did your line-up change at all since "The Shed"? I know some of you guys played in different bands like Inhume... What other bands besides Bile are you currently playing in?

Bile is, was and will always be the three of us. Ben Voorhees is responsible for all downtuned six string violence and deaththreats. Loek Voorhees is responsible for the kneecapping bulldozer-riffage and I'm their little brother Rob Voorhees and I'm handeling the blunt objects and hurl insults at people. All members have played in several bands within both the HC/Grind and Death metal-scene and Yes... Loek and Ben are also involved in Inhume at the time. Loek and myself are involved in a brutal-ass project of Rock 'n roll-blasphemy. Some of us used to be active in bands like : Insult, Mallorn, Drowning in Tears, Grizzly Adams, H.S.M.L., Mangled, Malignant etc..

How would describe the music you're playing? What kind of bands influence your stuff, or influenced you in starting something like Bile?

We play Sludgecore infested Goregrind with Horror-themes and lyrics, so Sludgy HorrorGore would be the most fitting description to our sound. We try to combine the savage, filth-ridden grooves and drones of Sludgecore/Doom, the mid-tempo polka and blasts of Goregrind with the D-beats of Scandinavian Crustcore. Basically we just wanted to make primitive and brutal-ass music that we enjoy playing, no matter what label you wanna put on it. However the pitchshifter-vocals will always get us labeled as a pure Goregrind-band. Whatever....

How would you describe "Camp Blood"? How does it compare with "The Shed"?

Well, for us 'Camp Blood' is the logical follow up to 'The Shed'. We evolved and matured as a band without compromising our sound or identity what so ever. 'The Shed' MCD was our first release and layed down the rules for all other Bile-releases to come. We always write theme or concept-albums based on classic Horror/Slasher movies. We pay homage to our favorite movies through our music. The lyrics, the samples, the lay-outs... It's all about fucking old school Horror!! No bullshit lyrics dealing with Porn, homophobia or random moronic topics that give Goregrind a bad name. Fuck that!!

Can you shed some light on what will the cover artwork look like?

No....Fucking wait and see. All I can say is that it's gonna be a concept-album dealing with a classic Slasher-series from the early '80s. True fans of the genre will recognise every aspect of the album. The artwork is a full-scale painting and turned out fucking amazing!!

Not sure if you're cool to talk about this but... Why was the album held up for a year or so? What label was supposed to do it before No Escape came into the picture?

Well, let's just say that shit didn't really work out with the previous recordlabel that was gonna release the album. Wether it was the communication, financial aspects or other shit....There's no point in blaming that particulair label or point fingers. All I can say it's gonna be their fucking loss!! We're totally happy with No Escape records because they are a sincere hardworking recordlabel runned by cool fucking guys with a vision and passion for extreme music. Everything happened for a reason I guess and we're really glad No Escape stepped up to the plate.

You've been influenced by The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (part I and II only!!!) in the past, seems like this time the new stuff's gonna be all about Friday the 13th, right?! Ok, now some movie talk... what are some of your fave Friday the 13th movies? What did you think of the TCM remake? Would you go see a "Leatherface Vs Jason" movie if they ever made one?

First of all.....'Leatherface Vs Jason'??? Hell no!! I would rather shove a rusty spike down my pee-hole then watch crap like that. As far as the 'Friday the 13th' series goes, there's a bunch of movies I really like and a bunch of them that really suck. I think the first one is probably one of the best. It's the classic. The remake of the TCM isn't that bad at all as a movie as long as you can look at it seperately from the first 2 classics. See it as a different movie. Sure, it's modern and the Leatherface-character looks like shit. But all in all it's not as bad as I expected it to be. It still doesn't have shit on the original one of course, but it sure beats all the shitty modern, mainstream so-called 'Horror' movies. As far as modern movies go, I'm more into the deranged Japanese stuff that Takashi Miike is producing. Rob zombie is keeping his movies old school, so ya gotta respect that as well. I think 'House of a thousand corpses' is one of the better Horror-movies that came out in recent years. Fans of Zombie-flicks should defenately keep an eye out for 'Vs the Dead'. A Canadian Zombie-flick produced by Rabidog films, a DIY movie-company runned by members of Canada's most brutal Hardcoreband HAYMAKER. Death metal-fans take note, since EXHUMED will be appearing in that movie. Can't wait for that one to drop!!

Any other releases planned besides the "Camp Blood" cd?

Yeah, within the next 2 months we'll be recording 3 new tracks and 3 old school "bilefied" cover-tunes (Tracks from 3 ultra-brutal-cool bands from the 80's) for a split 10" with Australia's Grind 'n Roll-Pimps BLOODDUSTER and 3 new tracks for a split 7" with our Swedish buddies REGURGITATE. Next year we'll be recording a bunch of new stuff for a split 10" with UK Doom-kings ELECTRIC WIZARD. The split 10"es will be released by Deadlock records (Hol.) and the split 7" will be released by Regurgitated semen records (Ger.). No Escape records will also be doing a re-press of 'The Shed' MCD, since it's been sold out for years........
But, first things first!! Fucking CAMP BLOOOOOOOOOOOD!!

What about live gigs? Anything planned to go along with the cd release? What have been some of your most memorable gigs? Do you always do the blood-thing?

We haven't planned any live-shows in the upcoming months since we're in the process of writing new stuff and recording. We will play a release-show as soon as the album drops. Our buddies in NARCOSIS are gonna hook us up with a bunch of UK-shows in the upcoming future and our homies REGURGITATE will try to return the favour and put us up in Sweden. Our most memorable show must have been our worst show ever (Baroeg, Rotterdam in '03) cause it was a pure fucking drunk nightmare and the worst part.... We couldn't give a flying fuck!!
For the rest our little trips with REGURGITATE were a fucking blast. All the fucking Festivals...Maryland Deathfest (usa), Obscene Extreme (cz), Grind your Mother (it), Stonehenge (nl)..etc..etc.. Fuck, I dunno. we just enjoy playing live any time. Just visiting countries throughout the world and hanging out with friends is the best part of playing in a band. Allthough we don't play live too much. We try to keep it interesting and achieve this by not playing out too much. Seeing the same blooddrenched fucking band of morons every week is fucking boring, so we try to keep it interesting for ourselves and the crowd. I can tell you that we will be playing our asses off promoting 'Camp Blood' as soon as the album drops.....And yes.... We will occasionally do the blood-thing allthough it's a pain in the ass and you look like a damn clown for at least a week.

By the way, why Bile? Did you ever hesitate between other names of bodily fluids before going for this one?

Why Bile? Good question, I think probably nobody in the band could tell you what's up with the name. We just wanted a short-ass, simple name for the band, and it's the hardest part in forming a band. Trying to find a good fucking name. Bile...Sounds fucking ridiculous if ya think of it or what it stands for!! Wehehehehe!! This goes for 99% of the Goregrind-scene. We just didn't wanna go for a name that has any links with homophobia, glorifying rape or other pathetic and pointless stuff that is very often associated with this type of music. You know what?........................................................................FUCK YOU, WE'RE BILE!!

I couldn't find a Bile website... Do you think of having one of those done?

We're still working on a website as we speak. For now check out www.noescaperecords.com for info and a link to our mySpace-profile. You can check out a bunch of old and new tracks on that profile as well.
