Interview with Antigama (January 2005)

Hi there... Ok, so can you introduce Antigama's band members? Did some of you play in other bands before that?

Cheers. Antigama is: Lucas on vocals, Michal on bass, Siwy on drums and me Sebastian on guitar. All of us plays in a different bands before that and now, Michal plays in Reinfection, Siwy plays in Damnable - now he' s playing in Herman Rarebell together with me. Lucas has his own electro project called IN.

How would you describe your music style? Which bands do you think have the biggest influence on you (conscious or not) when you write songs?

I don't really know. You can call us whatever you want. I think we're mixing a lot of styles like grindcore, hardcore, metal, industrial and so on. Everything's got big influence on us when we're started to writing songs - it's not only music but also every kind of art and life in general.

How often do you rehearse? What kind of place do you rehearse in? How does the song writing process works?

We're rehearsing as much as we can, so it's means that we're practise 4-5 days in a week. We've a nice rehearsal place with cool equimpent and stuff. The writing process is very simple: we're smoke a lot of pot and jam! We have no special kind of writing style - everything is out in a very natural way.

Any special meaning or reason why you chose Antigama as a band name?

No, not really. Antigama means destabilisation, difference and this is the reason why this name was chosen. Except all this, I think the name is cool itself - short and easy to remember.

You're pretty prolific, 2 cd's, plenty of split releases, I haven't heard all of your releases... But for example, the Split cd w/ Openwound featured material with some raw rehearsal sound/live tracks... which ones of your split releases are studio material? Which ones are rehearsal/live? And
finally which releases are you the most satisfied with or just feel special to you?

Yea, we have a lot of stuff out. On the split with Open Wound we've some raw sounding shit like Promo 2003, Live stuff and some demos. On the split with Deranged Insane we've a material recorded and mixed by us - it's sounding also little raw, but it's totally different band direction - a lot of electro, noise, harsh stuff mixed with our tech-metal. It's sounds very strange but great! Except this we've a split tape released in France (together with Elysium) with some old live/studio shit, Tribute to Godflesh (also for French Nihilistic Holocaust), split 7" with Italian Bastard Saints, lots of compliation CD's etc.
The best releases from Antigama so far are "Discomfort" - our second full length, and a 3-way split CD together with Third Degree and Herman Rarebell - this is the REAL Antigama and we're proud from these them both - they have the best sound, ideas and reviews so far.

Regarding the Antigama/Third Degree/Herman Rarebell... From what I understand Herman Rarebell contains members from Antigama & Third Degree... So is it a real band or just a one-time project?

It's a real band. We're working on upcoming full length album for Selfmadegod Records and some 7" and compilation tracks for the future releases. We're not rehearsing together as much as we wanted, cause the voxman living in London and the bassplayer 200 km from us. But me and Siwy still keeping the spirit of the band, writing new songs and have a lot of fun. Herman Rarebell is a full blast grind band inspired by the likes as Napalm Death, Repulsion, The Kill, Anal Cunt and Bolt Thrower.

You're already working on a third cd, what can you say about it? How will be the new songs? What label will be putting this out? Any other releases planned as of now?

Yes. At the moment we're busy with writing and rehearsing songs for the upcoming studio session. We wanna enter the studio in February 2005. The new Antigama songs are different everytime, I hope you'll dig it. It's hard to talk about my own music, so what I can say it will be a brutal records for sure. We will be releasing it on Selfmadegod Records in May I think. The future releases are split CD/LP with Noisear, split CD with Deformed and more to come if we'll make it. There is all the time somebody who's wants us on some releases like splits, compilations etc.

What's been your most memorable live gig so far? How would you describe one of your live show? How's the crowd reaction usually?

We're playing a lot shows so far with different bands from Tragedy to Dead Infection. The crowd is usually always different, so it's a good thing. We're trying to play for the mixed audience like punks, metalheads, grindcores and so. I think we're pretty known in Poland now, a lot of peoples likes what we're doing, Karol/Selfmadegod is selling our Cd's like hell. You've asked me about most memorable gig with Antigama or my best live gig in general?? With Antigama most of my gigs where cool, but the best show I've ever seen was just Kiss in Prague in 1996 - my dreams comes true, I've seen original line up in make up! hahahaha.

What do you think of the polish underground? What are your favorite current polish bands?

Third Degree, Dead Infection, Nyia, Pignation, Shackled Down, Rzeznia, Toxic Bonkers - they are my faves. I don't know much about polish underground scene, we have a cool and shitty bands here. The same with magazines - I think "Violence" is the fucking best! Labels for sure Selfmadegod - there is no other guys like Karol - he's a wicked fucker!! Always supportive, always friendly. We're in contact with all the bands I have mentioned before - they are cool and friendly guys.

What's your current playlist/favorite bands?

Goblin, Pig Destroyer, Laibach, Napalm Death, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, The Kill, Grace Jones, Kiss, Discordance Axis, Fabio Frizzi, Duran Duran, Kajagoogoo, Motorhead, Young Gods, Noisear, Zombi, David Bowie, Ozric Tentacles, Lalo Schifrin- it's changed everyday…

You're occasionally using movie samples... Do you remember which were some of the movies you sampled? What are some of your alltime favorite movies?

Don't remember them all!! Hahahaha. But movies is the thing I really dig in. I love tons of great movies, so I think my list is too long for this interview… I like old kung fu flicks (Bruce Lee is GOD), slasher/ exploitation/ giallo/ horror stuff like Argento, Fulci, Bava, stuff like Carpenter, Peckinpah, Coppola, Gilliam, Ferrara, Nacho Cerda, Buttgereit. Tons of sick underground films I have seen lately on "Horror Fiesta Festival" where also fucking great!! Too many to mention!

That's about everything I've got... Thanks for going through this... Any closing words?

Yes. Thank you very much Pierre for this so cool interview and your support for Antigama. Keep it up!!
