"Altar of Giallo - Godfathers of Mondo"

This is a interview with Noel Kemper (GRUESOME STUFF RELISH) and his greatful ALTAR OF GIALLO, on of the best spanish Horror – Grindterrorists. Read the smalltalk, visit them on myspam and enjoy the music!  A real  Grindcore-classic, haha.

Hey Noel, how are you. How’s it going with ALTAR OF GIALLO and GRUESOME STUFF RELISH?

Fine!!! Writing new songs for future releases, playing some gigs and having fun.

What about ALTAR OF GIALLO? Who is playing with you? Is it just a project or a real band? What in your main-focus. ALTAR or G.S.R.?

Altar is real band. We have played a lot of gigs and now we..re planning to do more gigs than before because now we have a drummer and the sound of the band is stronger. Daniel from Superbullits (myspace. com/superbullits) is on bass, Juan is on the drums and Miguel is the guitarist. Miguel played in Repugnance long time ago and now is playing with GSR as live guitarist. I write the songs for both bands so I..m focused fifty-fifty.

Why do you need a 2nd band? Where is the difference between G.S.R. and ALTAR? Do you use G.S.R. ideas for ALTAR?

I started with Altar because 2 years ago GSR was near to split up and I had a lot of tracks written. When I recorded the mini cd for Altar the guys from GSR decided to re-start with the band.
I think Altar is more old school than GSR. More death metal. The sound in GSR is more grind and roll Swedish style.
I use the same ideas for the two bands the only thing that change is the music. The lyrics are based on the same stuff.

Tell me about the Giallo-themes! What makes this movie-genre so fascinating to you? Can you explain to our readers what GIALLO-flicks are!

I can..t explain it. When I was a child I rent a lot of Italian and Spanish movies in the videostore so when I was a teenager I disvered Impetigo and I got fascinated.
Giallo flicks are blood, cruelty and non political conduct. Not as the American horror movies.

You use not only Giallo storys but a lot of 60’s/70’s/and 80’s Italian horror flicks. Any special reason for that? What are your favorites? And what about modern horror movies or US slasher shit?

I use lyrics about zombies, psychos and cannibals that..s the better way. I..m not into realistic themes or politics.
I love slasher films but I prefer old movies such as the blind dead saga, late 70..s Italian zombie and cannibal films….
I don..t like so much the modern movies but I liked The Descent and the 2 new films of Romero. My favourite films are The Beyond, Last Cannibal World, Zombie 2

Tell me about the work to “A Bloodfeast For The Dead”! How long did you work on it? Was it easy to get a label? What about the idea to the “movie – poster “cover?

I worked on it for 2 months. I wrote the music then the lyrics and then got into the studio. I recorded the whole album in 3 days. Bill from Last house on the Right asked me to release the cd a week later.
I liked the movie poster idea so I tried to make something closer to it. I..m very happy with the final result.

You always shooting off your mouth, calling your full length “a horror grind classic”. Are you so convinced by yourself or just a bunch of sarcastic freaks?

Hehehhehe. That was just a design for a t shirt!!! By the way that design is going to be released as t shirt next month.
The last horror grind classic was Horror of the zombies of Impetigo!!
I like what I do but the classics are Carcass, Necrony, Haemorrhage, Impetigo.

Any special songs on it you prefer? I like the title track! What about “The Ghouligans”?

I like the title track too! I like final of the “last man on earth”. It has a riff closer to the mid temp of Necrony and Haemorrhage.
Hehehehe!! The Ghouligans is dedicated to the guys of our crew. They..re hooligans. They..re always on drugs, alcohol and rows.

“Messenger Of Death” is great too, especially the guitar riffs. I think this one is a live-killer, or am I wrong? This one has to be in your set list! Tell me about the lyrics. By the way, why do you use a drum-computer?

Thanks man!! We start our shows with Messengers! As you can see…you..re not wrong!
The lyrics are about black magic. I like voodoo and primitive witchcraft.
I started using a drum computer because I hadn..t found a drummer. Then I realised that without having a drummer you can record quicker and spend less money in the studio. Hehehe.
Next record we..re going to spent a lot of money more because now we have found a great drummer.

Before the full length you had an Ep. Do you still like it? Any songs or riffs or what ever used for the album?

I like the Ep but the sound of the drum-machine is not as realistic as the full length. I..m planning rerecord 2 tracks of the mini cd for future releases. Anyway I love this stuff and we play live 4 of the 5 tracks recorded there.

Tell me about the upcoming Split Ep’ss! How many songs will you use? Are they all new tunes? Do you believe your style fits with the other bands?

We have recorded 4 new songs for a split with the Belgian bands Soldered Poon. It will be released through Last House on the right in December.
We are going to record 8 tracks for 2 releases. Some songs will be released as a split with the guys of Whore Hammer from Tenessee and the rest of the songs are going to be released through us as a mini cd. We..ve recorded some cover versions of old bands we..ve played such as Vadhar and Repugnance.
I think that our style doesn..t fit 100% with the other bands but I think it..s better not to play the same stuff.

It seems it runs very well for ALTAR OF GIALLO. Did you expect it at the beginning?

No. I..m very surprised with the band. I have a mini cd and a full length released, 3 more upcoming releases and a new album for the next year. All this stuff in only in 2 years?? I think the things are going well.

Do you think you get in conflict with G.S.R. if ALTAR gets bigger?

No, because any of the bands are going to become bigger. I have 30 years old. I don..t expect things like that. I have a quiet life in my city with my friends. I just want to record more cds and play some gigs in Europe and America but I don..t like touring.

Are any collaboration with Bill and Razorback planed? I think this guy is a maniac and he does a good job for G.S.R..

Yes he..s a grind maniac!! We don..t have anything planned with him at the moment.
He did a good job for GSR.

Who the hell made your shirts? The one I got is XL...and it fits small, or I’m getting fat. I hope not. Who did the printing and who the design?

Oh fuck!!!hhehhehe the sizes of the t shirts are so small!! I told the girl of the printing shop and she told me that was the normal size but it..s not true!! Don..t worry the next tshirts will be printed on normal sizes!!
I did the design. It..s a rare poster of the film Black Sabbath.

What do you think if it comes to progressive elements into Grindcore music? Will it ever get a chance in your music? Or will you stay Old School?

I don..t like this kind of music. I prefer old school riffs without technical arrangements. The next Altar stuff is in the same vein: old school death metal riffs, doomy parts and grind rhytms.

Who created the better zombies, Fulci or Romero? Or maybe Jorge Grau? I’m sure you know his “let sleeping corpses lie”. Whats your opinion about it?

In my opinion the best movies are the Romero..s but the best scenes of death and gore are in the Italian movies. I think Romero..s Zombie is the best zombie movie ever but Fulci..s “Zombie 2” and “Gates of hell” are classics.
”Let sleeping corpses lie” is a great fim and it was shot in 1974, some years before the Italian invasion. It..s one of the best spanish movie ever.

Ok, enough, last sleazy nonsense is yours!

Thankx a lot for the interview Jupp!!! Check out “A bloodfeast for the dead”!! Its a horror grind classic!!! Hhehhehe that..s all folks!!
