Review: Really... neat. The humor, the
metal and the grind. I don't really know why, but I
insisted on the grind part when I wrote the 2 previous
demos reviews. Desperator is definitely more of a death
metal band really. And I wonder if there's a chart in
Sweden for this matter or what, coz most swedish bands
have to have the same sound and vibe; or... it's not
swedish. OK, so imagine Entombed "Left Hand Path"
or Grave "Into the Grave" fresh feel with a
little faster drumming, more blast beats, straightforward
song structures, funnier, more twisted song arrangements
and you'll get Desperator. They have the groovy swedish
dm riffs, they have the blasting parts, they don't have
the slow parts, they have 2 types of vocals (Entombed-like
+ one of those high pitched manic vox) and they rock.
Let's stop questionning myself about it, I just totally
dig this stuff. As usual, they make their demo very
short, only 3 songs in less than 7 minutes. They need to
work on a damn full-length album and fast! For the story,
this has been recorded in Sunlight Studios by Tomas
Skogsberg, hence the even more swedish sound. And swedes...
are the kings of metal. Really tasty cover and song
titles as well... |

"Devil in
these guys!" Release date: 1999 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Review: A new demo for Desperator, really
excellent. Just skilful, clean grindcore, brilliantly
controlled and musically, very interesting. The sound is
clear and heavy on every instruments as well as on vocals.
Their spirit, the admirable composition work and the
sound are close to other swedish grind bands like
Birdflesh, Nasum or like some of the bands who signed a
contract with Relapse Records(the devil?), like Benumb
& co. I think Desperator is at least as interesting
as them, so watch out. The 5 songs there are constructed
on midtempos, a good dose of blasts, mostly fast rythms
but also on some rock n' roll and groovy parts (especially
for the last song "Take my breast away", which
is the most moderate of all the tracks there). The
drumming is strong and tight, still managed with
considerable rythmic variety, and always a grindy feeling
to it. Good complementary guitar and bass work, with
first choice noteworthy grind/hardcore/metal riffs, it's
kinda melodic, but very thick, heavy and catchy in the
same time. The good handling of all the instruments
furnishes a great fluidity to the songs, and a
confortable feeling to the basic listener who is fond of
good grind. Powerful vocals spice the whole recording,
and manic screams take turns with lower rough roars. The
high pitched voices can maybe show some black metalish
intonations, together with the most melodic guitar
chords, but Desperator is definitely incribed in a
grindcore crenel; with relatively short tracks, boosted
with fastness, nothing to do with black, really! The song
titles and the spirit seems to have some connections with
a certain kind of, humour. As well as the artwork, which
is a rip off of the infant carcass drawing from the
famous second Cannibal Corpse album, "Butchered at
birth"... they added little horns to them, and some
more things... The demo title "Devil in these guys!"
should be a game of words on "Devil in disguise"
if I'm not wrong. So, you see, there's a nice funny mood,
and it's a delight for the ears. But I'm although
terribly sad, coz this is too fucking short!!! I already
rewinded the tape 10 times or more and I only received it
this morning! Well please support this band, I would be
glad to hear more from them in the future... |

"GRINDacCOREdion" Release date: 1998 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Review: I must tell you I never heard
anything from this band before they send me their demo!
And I've been surprised when I listened to it! Surprised
in a good way of course! Sound is amazingly perfect!
Crystal clear! All their songs are fast-as-light, with
razor sharp guitar riffs, blasting drums... and really
raw, high pitched or hardcore-influenced vocals, (don't
expect any growls!)... This can be called grindcore, but
a big hardcore/punk/metal spirit can be feeled, even if
the rythms are always kept at ultrafast cadence!
Desperator is fresh, thrashy, original, catchy, fast...
Never boring, and always striking, with some original
parts... This demo tape is recommended to listeners of
more hardcore-metal oriented material... If you're into
total gore-grind-noise filthy style maybe you can not
like it... Anyway, it comes with perfect sound production
and great colour cover! See contact below and get in
touch with Desperator! |
| Tracks: 1)Get down on your niece 2)I put my foot on Uranus 3)Alcohol and whores 4)Will pork for food 5)Chritian fux 6)Michael jack's off 7)Bite the pillow darling |
