CRYPTIC "Circular saw fetish"

  (Noise Variations)
Release date: 1998
Running time: 12:01

Review: On this mini cd, Cryptic plays nice death metal with a pounding grindy feel; mostly moderate rythms, but very catchy; their sound production remind me of Mortician on "Mortal massacre": slightly muddy but incredibly heavy. There are a few blastbeats, but the rythms are varying on slower beats most of the time, still with a catchy groove through it though; and also very good low tuned thrashing guitars bringing unsparing heaviness. Vocals are imposing deep guttural grunts, spoken from beyond the grave, close to Mortician. Their style is also similar to Exposed Guts from Germany I think. It's hard to decipher a real band personality here, but their music is more than listenable. Their sound here is way heavier than their material on the 3 way split with Vivisection & Festering Saliva. There are a few introductions in german I didn't understand, and an introduction taken from George Romero's Dawn Of The Dead on forth track. That's cool. The cover is simple, in black and white, and it's quite nice, with original and bizarre member pictures inside. Watch out for this interesting band... This mcd is available for DM15/$10 postpaid from Noise Variations.

CRYPTIC/VIVISECTION/FESTERING SALIVA "Another night of grind"

(Noise Variations)
Release date: 1997/98
Running time: 44:25

Cryptic Review:
Cryptic is a 4 piece band from Germany, they play brutal death metal, with a grindy touch la Mortician. Their 5 songs opening this 3 way split cd have a good sound, especially on drums, which are real, but nearly sound like a drum machine... The guitars do not sound powerful enough in my mind, but are although thrashy and churny and energize the compositions very well. The songs are constructed on fast parts, some blasts, and many slow passages, with lots of double bass. The vocalist eructs very abrasive guttural growls/grunts, it's quite nice. This band isn't really exceptional, but honestly very pleasant to listen to. For death/grind freaks.
Tracks:  1)Shrinkhead butt plug 2)A gulp of putrid body liquids 3)Matul isle 4)Bodyshaper 5)Steel erection

Vivisection Review: First, this is not Vivisection from Japan, but Vivisection from Germany. Then, this german Vivisection plays basic gore/grind, maybe with a small death metal touch. In my goregrind-freak opinion, they have the best material of this split cd. Here we have 7 splattery songs which reminds me of Retaliation (on Grindwork compilation), Exulceration & Regurgitate (on split cd with Dead), guitars are thrashy (not heavy enough in the mix in my mind), drum parts are mostly blast beats (but not totally speed crazed, just beating time). The vocals give the gory touch: abrupt harmonized barks with a completely distorted sound, gurgles through a bloody throat, and also a few natural growls on the last song. This is quite good, but they can still improve their grindy feeling I think! Goregrind freaks can check this out anyway!
Tracks:  6)Cadaver fuck 7)Maggots, guts'n' gore 8)Extraction of hate 9)Ascia plexa capita 10)Nuclear obliteration 11)Drown in fester 12)Mutilated deformed child

Festering Saliva Review: I will say this band plays brutal death/thrash metal with a grindy spirit. The guitars are very very thrashy and sometimes remind me of early Kreator, there are two vocal types: one is totally disgusting, low-pitched deep growls and another one is screamy, which is nearly black metallish- but put together with the music it sounds closer to death metal than any black metal stuff. Their way of playing is very dirty and raw, and they have a good thrashy feeling. It's good.
Tracks:
13)Old christian soul 14)Bomit your guts 15)Angels blood 16)We did wrong 17)Festering saliva So, you see, this 3 way split cd is made with very underground spirit. These 3 bands are no BIG bands. The cover artwork is not amazing. But you feel these bands put alot of energy in their material, and their stuff is really catchy; the sound is not perfect, but still very clear, and the running time is 45 minutes. Underground supporters, check out this good cd! I don't how much is it, but it should be cheap. It's available from Noise Variations...
