CATHETER "Dimension 303" Cd

(Selfmadegod Records - SMG 019)
Release date: 2005
Running time: 35:19

Review:
Hey, this album is pure grindcore fury, Catheter definitely delivers the goods here! This is their usual rough and tumble grindcore style, fast, raw and slightly hardcore-tinged (very much in Phobia's vein)... All-out anger, full speed, blasting drumming, blistering grind riffs, great, intense vocals filled with venomous rage. Everything here is tight, neatly flowing and delivered in a blazing fast manner; Taking originality is out of picture, I can't find anything done wrong on this album, it's pretty irreprochable really... Guitars have an extremely incisive, ripping edge, instruments don't seem to be as low-tuned as most bands nowadays which gives this stuff an extra raw, biting quality! Drumming is super fucking tight and going at pretty overwhelming speeds too! My promo copy is a lame cardboard thingie so I can't comment on the whole cd layout, this art doesn't look that hot to me though, I reckon it has a cool Napalm Death/"Utopia Banished" kinda thing going for it and I'm all for hand-drawn art but this doesn't exactly catch the eye, I'm sure the band would benefit from slightly slicker designs! Anyway, my review in a nutshell: this is one hell of a good grindcore album!!! Oh and is it me or Catheter is an extremely underrated band? They kick so much ass!

CATHETER/F.U.B.A.R. Split Cd

(Selfmadegod Records - SMG 010)
Release date:
2004
Running time: 26:38

Catheter Review: Us grindcore... Some hardcore/metal influences in there but otherwise this stuff is totally intense, aggressive, grinding and performed fullspeed. Musicianship is just killer, everything's so very tightly delivered... mindblowing fast and skilful drumming, fierce grinding guitar riffs, crazy bass work... Songs are all furious, ultrafast-paced, rhythmically compelling and led by some really angry vocals: constantly roaring, vociferating or shouting equally angry lyrics... the sound production is pretty big too in my opinion, just the right amount of sharp and heavy... All around catchy, smashing and stimulating grindcore!

F.U.B.A.R. Review: This band is slightly similar to Catheter, perhaps somewhat more chaotic and loose... Still, this is all fine and energic grindcore: strenuous speeds, concise and heavy guitar riffing, midrange roaring shouts and blaring shrieks... This band sounds totally enraged, the anger and strength put into this stuff is almost palpable... the downtuned tone of the guitar and the sound of the drums totally reminds me of early Napalm Death ("Mentally Murdered" Ep), the vocals are maybe closer to something like Cripple Bastards though... Sound production is not exactly crystal clear, but still quite good and heavy. This cd's also got some swell artwork and layout, printed lyrics, now add to that 2 excellent grind bands... that pretty much makes of this a great quality grind release!

CATHETER "Preamble To Oblivion" Cd

(Selfmadegod Records - SMG 005)
Release date:
2003
Running time: 50:57

Review:
This cd opens with a slow & sludgy introductory song that slowly gets harder... Then the second track burst into all-out, lambasting grindcore, with a decidedly urgent, panic-stricken vibe: pounding beats, fast-as-hell drumming assaults, sudden and disorienting tempo changes, heavy and blistering riffs, some more speed, aggressive hardcore-type shouts often quite low and guttural (although rarely truly growling) mixed with more incisive shriekings reciting very catchy and angry lyrics in a rapid-fire way... This is indeed wild, uncompromising musical violence, but definitely not strictly one-dimensional... There are many influences through their stuff, mostly crust and thrashing hardcore but also some sludge (just a smidge; because otherwise this is music played very very fast). Some pretty good song writing, a lot of refreshing variety and a solid execution with total control of the stuff they're playing. Sound production is not perfect but very heavy and clear and keeping a raw edge at the same time, the guitar sound is slightly saturated but the riffs are grinding and gripping all the same, the drums come through in a fluid way, with a really good and full sound. They're playing a note-worthy cover version of Napalm Death's "Unchallenged Hate" so that should give you a more precise idea of what's influencing them... Personally they also remind me of Cripple Bastards and sometimes maybe Disrupt but their grindcore is pretty diversified so it's hard to pin-point it exactly. This is 18 tracks with an additional 12 bonus tracks of older material, slightly rawer but even more angry-sounding... This band deserves all your attention, they're great!
