BRUTAL TRUTH "Extreme Conditions Demand Extreme Responses"

(Earache Records)
Release date: 1992

Review: The first Brutal Truth long length record... and whoa! What a violent album! It begins with "p.s.p.i." a little industrial intro and then, "Birth of ignorance" just burst at your face! This only song is an unique masterpiece in whole death/grind genre! It begins quite slowly but soon enough a fast apocalyptic blast-fueled insensate grind attack is unleashed upon your brain provoking intense cerebral damages! The hyper-fast blast beating drums are just smashing all around, along with fast-as-light thrashy guitar riffs, and both typically -grindcore- vocals (highpitched screams and totally low raw gruntroars) It's making me feel so te-rri-fic! It's between grindcore and death metal, some boring slow parts are also there, but most of the tracks are real fucking fast! Lyrics are cool, but sometimes not very clear for understanding, often too simple and serious... Although a masterpiece in grindcore/brutal death! If you're a brutal death or grind addict You just can't live without it!
Tracks: 1)P.s.p.i. 2)Birth of ignorance 3)Stench of profit 4)Ill-neglect 5)Denial of existence 6)Regression/progression 7)Collateral damage 8)Time 9)Walking corpse 10)Monetary gain 11)Wilt 12)H.o.p.e. 13)Blockhead 14)Anti-homophobe 15)Unjust compromise

BRUTAL TRUTH "Need to Control"

(Earache Records)
Release date: 1992

Review: Here is the second Brutal Truth album... we discover another Brutal Truth facet... Their death metal aspect is discarded, and a pleasant grind/noise/indus bent is displayed; with a fanciful sound (Colin Richardson's on mix). The song "Collapse" introducing the cd is very slow, deep and heavy with a touch of indus and sets an extravaguant constrast with the next track, "Black door mine", a turbulent, messy and uncontrolled outlet of profuse noise and hatred! Very different from death/grind style from "Extreme conditions...". Here, Brutal Truth evolved towards a rough, visceral grindcore, faster and more radical with songs like "Turn face", "Bite the hand", "I see red" or "Choice of new generation"(the best track in my mind; about legalisation of hemp). As well as towards other forms of extremity with slower depressive tracks("ordinary madness") or total industrial noise tracks with "Iron lung" or "crawl space"... This album offers a great variety of experiments in all kinds of musical extremity. Probably the most "artistic" Brutal Truth album, and a pure delight for extreme grind & noise lovers! Japanese copies manufactured by Toy's Factory contain very interesting bonustracks... like Pink Floyd's "Wish you were here" cover version, Celtic Frost's "Dethroned Emperor" cover version and two other great own Brutal Truth tracks...

Tracks: 1)Collapse 2)Black door mine 3)Turn face 4)Godplayer 5)I see red 6)Ironlung 7)Bite the hand 8)Ordinary madness 9)Media blitz 10)Judgement 11)Brain trust 12)Choice of a new generation 13)Mainliner 14)Displacement 15)Crawlspace
Bonus Tracks:
16)Wish you were here (now go away) 17)Painted clowns 18)Dethroned emperor 19)B.t.i.t.b

BRUTAL TRUTH "Kill Trend Suicide"

(Earache Records)
Release date: 1992

Review: 10 new studio tracks, something like a prevail to "Sounds of an animal kingdom" full-lenght cd. It's quite cool, but they lost the thick sound of their first releases! as well as the extreme vocals which sometimes lacks of natural intity; and guitars do not as heavy as before! This material is very different from old Brutal Truth stuff and I think they found a new, original way to play! Lyrics are too abstract to have a real impact I think but are still nice to read! Anyway Brutal Truth will stay a great band in all-time grindcore scene. Check the hidden track at the end: totally insane messy grindnoise... A version of this cd with bonus track(s) exists, but I still didn't have the luck to listen to it... Check it out! (note: this ep is dedicated to the dead singer of the amazing japanese band S.O.B...)

Tracks: 1)Blind leading the blind 2)Pass some down 3)Let's go to war 4)Hypocrite invasion 5)Everflow 6)Zombie 7)Homesick 8)Humanity's folly 9)I killed my family 10)Kill trend suicide

BRUTAL TRUTH "Sounds of the Animal Kingdom"

(Earache Records)
Release date: 1998

Review: The last, ultimate Brutal Truth(now RIP) full-length work... except the extraordinary cover visual, the wonderful layout and the original lyrics, I'm quite disappointed! It follows the same lines as on "Kill trend suicide"... Something really far from the extremity peaks reached through "Extreme conditions..." or "Need to control"... Even if they're not really calmed down on this one, rythmic and catchy attempts, most of the time, are falling to the ground. Vocals aren't not really pushed to the extreme; the screams and growls really sound like being contained, and the drummer often sounds like beating in vain... Sound is slighty weak... it's clear and clean but quite feeble-sounding, not catchy. Maybe all that is intentional? It honestly give them a very unique, recognizable style. And many people seem to appreciate that! But to say the truth, it's not my case. I prefer their early material which was fucking brutal and catchy in a metal way. I think their new sound engineer does not fit to their style, they should have kept Colin Richardson on the mix, it was pretty better! Here, I do not fully understand what they wanted to do! There are also a bunch of original ideas and interesting experiments like the endless sample in the end, and some bizarre songs... But well, I was awaiting something way more intense and extreme! But we're talking about Brutal Truth! And even if I criticize it, I liked it, because of the superior composing quality and for the work they probably put into it, it's not so great for Brutal Truth, but it beats most of the bands fooling around the scene for sure... but, finally, and honestly, I don't play this cd very often. It's available in an alternate japanese version with a few bonus tracks including an Agathocles cover version... so watch out! Of course Brutal Truth freaks have to get it!

Tracks: 1)Dementia 2)K.a.p. 3)Vision 4)Fucktoy 5)Jemenez cricket 6)Soft mind 7)Average people 8)Blue world 9)Callous 10)Fisting 11)Die laughing 12)Dead smart 13)Sympathy kiss 14)Pork farm 15)Promise 16)Foolish bastard 17)Postulate then liberate 18)It's after the end of the world 19)Machine parts 20)4:20 21)Unbaptized 22)Prey

BRUTAL TRUTH "Goodbye cruel world! live from planet earth + 13" double cd

(Relapse Records)
Release date: 1999
Running time:
74:02 & 69:21

Review:
Here is the testament of the band considered being the "biggest" grindcore act since Napalm Death stopped playing good things... though Brutal Truth is not pure grindcore really. "Goodbye Cruel World!" have something quite uncommon for a grindcore release: it's a double bill cd. It contains an entire live gig recording... There's also studio material on the second disc, only rare things: all the bonus tracks which appeared on japanese pressings of "Sounds of the animal kingdom" & "Kill trend suicide". It also contains the famous "Machine parts" 7"ep. Plus more unreleased funny live stuffs to fill the blanks like the 5 live versions of "Collateral Damage". The interesting parts are especially the cover versions, of Agathocles, Black Sabbath, Nausea etc... This is a cool thing for those who missed the japanese versions of the Brutal Truth records (they didn't put the "Need to control" bonus tracks, probably because it was released by Earache?). Huh, well to return to the first disc, the live recording... here we have 23 tracks with good sound but even if it must be impressive to witness a real live gig, I think these live recordings have a limited interest... Even if it's extremely enjoyable, these are pretty less intense versions, not very effective... especially the vocals which are screamy but a little vain. Tracks from "Extreme conditions..." & "Need to control" albums still have a good place there, and songs like "Birth of ignorance", "Walking corpse", "Choice of a new generation", "Time" or "Godplayer" are those working the best. Well, I must although say that after a while, when you bath in their live ambience, it's pretty excellent. This double cd is obviously made for big Brutal Truth fans...

BRUTAL TRUTH "Choice of a New Generation - an Underground Tribute to Brutal Truth" Cd

(zero negative records)
Release date: 2001
Running time: 32:13

Review:
So, that's a Brutal Truth tribute cd that means a bunch of bands are all playing Brutal Truth cover songs. Most of the bands I didn't know except for Birdflesh, Demisor and Groinchurn... Anyway, most of the bands here play faithful covers, I'm guessing most of the bands must be playing in the Brutal Truth genre of grind as well, some of them also seem to be either pretty sludgy (Chapel of Gristle), experimental, techno or noisecore-oriented (Suzuki Kid, Autodidact, Schizoid), some of them come up with different stuff like additional rock n' roll parts (No Rest for the Dead), funny groovy stuff (Malevolence) or completely acoustic covers (Violent Inmates), so you can expect a huge part of it being very original and even bizarre, but the rest mostly sounds like Brutal truth stuff. The covers I most enjoyed were the rather conventional, but extremely effective ones: Birdflesh (Antihomophobe), D-river (Birth of Ignorance, Walking Corpse), Demisor (Denial of Existence) & Groinchurn (Kill Trend Suicide). Overall, a really fine tribute album that should suit fairly well to every Brutal truth fan.

Tracks: 1)NO REST FOR THE DEAD "fisting/godplayer" 2)BIRDFLESH "antihomophobe" 3)R.U.R. "i see red" 4)CHAPEL OF GRISTLE "collapse" 5)CAVEMAN "blockhead" 6)SUZUKI KID "homesick" 7)DAEMON "kap" 9)LIKM'NREET "monetary gain" 10)NERVOCHAOS "turn face" 11)AUTODIDACT "ironlung" 12)MALEVOLENCE "walking corpse" 13)ZAZA MUSI "stench of profit" 14)D-RIVER "birth of ignorance" 15)STASIS "braintrust/blueworld" 16)CAVEMAN "collateral damage" 17)MONOLITH "choice of a new generation" 18)SCHIZOID "dementia" 19)NECREOUS painted clown" 20)VIOLENT INMATES "zombie" 21)DEMISOR "denial of existence" 22)ZAZA MUSI "blind leading the blind" 23)BIRDFLESH "consumer mentality" 24)CAVEMAN "callous" 25)INANITY "displacement" 26)D-RIVER "walking corpse" 27)RENEGADE "choice of a new generation" 28)GROINCHURN "kill trend suicide"

BRUTAL TRUTH "for drug-crazed grindfreaks only! live at noctum studios + 1" Cd

(solardisk)
Release date: 2000

Review:
I love Brutal Truth and all, but I think they got really sloppy after "Need to Control". Too much pot is not always good. Their live performances are especially not very fun to listen to, live performances in a studio is the same. There, you'll mostly find material from "Sounds of the animal kingdom" & "Kill trend suicide" plus a few ones from "E.C.D.E.R." and "Need to Control". I'm not totally sure but I don't think this version of those tracks is available elsewhere. There's also a weird 4 minutes 'untitled' track, it's just experimental stuff. Grind freaks probably won't dig it alot.

Tracks: 1)K.A.P. 2)Dead smart 3)Blind leading the blind 4)Let's go to war 5)Choice of a new generation 6)Walking corpse 7)Fisting 8)Homesick 9)Stench of profit 10)Jemenez cricket 11)Untitled
