BLOOD FREAK "Mindscraper" Cd

(Willowtip Records)
Release date: 2011
Running time: 44:55

Review: Well, good to hear new Maniac Neil stuff! The whole booklet artwork looks awesome, like a handmade cut & paste kind of scrapbook... I like how this album evacuates all their usual 80's horror movie samples into one psychedelic acid trip of a opening track... Then the rest of the album is pretty much uninterrupted music throughout. It's an interesting idea but I'm not sure the result is completely successful as I liked how Blood Freak albums were usually ponctuated with weird movie samples which injected energy throughout...
Anyway the actual metal kicks in then... Guitar tone totally reminds me of Dead (Germany), ultra downtuned with a very metallic ring to it. This is still highly listenable, fun death metal. Chock full of Blood Freak's usual meaty, thrashing guitar riffs and unstoppable brutal beats. Guitar work is pretty fast and technical... But I've got to say the sound production seems slightly off, I'll blame that guy Scott Hull for this, this stuff sounds a bit too much like Pig Destroyer at times. Song structures are a little too complex and not focused enough on more basic, catchy riffs. But I guess bands need to musically evolve to keep things interesting for themselves... Maybe it'll get a few more listens to get into it. But I kind of miss the simple, more straightforward feel of the first Blood Freak which remains my favorite, maybe it's because it had more of a stupid goregrind flavor to it. But this new album is still sounding pretty sweet, it's always great to hear new stuff from this band.

BLOOD FREAK "Live Fast, Die Young and Leave a Flesh-Eating Corpse!" Cd

(Razorback Records - RR37)
Release date: 2006
Running time: 67:30

Review:
This is the quintessential Razorback album, the perfect hybrid of all the label's aspirations from old school grind/gore, thrash metal, death metal, doom to exploitation flicks & horror comics! Like the previous Blood Freak cd this album is still very much Grind/Gore/Death Metal at the core, taking a Impetigo meets Carcass/General Surgery meers early Entombed/Grave main direction, except this time a whole lot more ingenious thrash metal arrangements are added to the mix (in the vein of the latest Frightmare album perhaps), complete with wah solos and guitar effect that really bringing out a different, really exciting edge to Blood Freak I think! So the big reveal that Blood Freak is not a real band?! It was a really good prank but honestly anyone who bought that the first album was a long lost album recorded back in the day must be really thick... I however had no idea this was the work of a single person; Color me impressed! Blood Freak definitely sounds full-fledged, even though every instrument is recorded individually by the same person, execution is totally natural, everything flows perfectly and musicianship's exceptional on every aspect, from mindblowing guitar riffing, tight-as-fuck drumming to the blistering roaring and shrieking vocal delivery... I'm not sure what kind of drugs Neil is on to stay that consistently great at churning out excellent riffage in every single band and project he's helming but one sure thing is that I want some too! Song-writing is just excellent, songs are all memorable, catchy, hard-hitting, just cool-as-hell... Blood Freak more than any other death metal bands out there today simply delivers the goods! Always keeping it straightforward, take-no-prisoner, downtuned and thrashing! The styling and musical direction is really steady and strong, this is usually the most positive aspect of one-man bands, you don't have to struggle to mix different people's influences, I'm convinced that's what makes this album such pure, undiluted metal fun! The album still explores a variety of styles, it can be blastbeat grinding, thrashing mid-tempos, go into some d-beat rhythms or have some really cool Autopsy-like doom moments on some tracks like "The Flesh and Blood Show". As usual, tons of exploitation gore and horror movie and trailer samples are worked into the songs to great effect! The booklet is also filled with awesome comic book/vintage poster style artwork, terrific front cover by legendary Ed Repka and really cool inside black & white drawings by Putrid and others... Plus this time a complete lyric sheet!!! Razorback head Billy Nocera is responsible for writing most of them, in a whacky and insane Impetigo-style, meaning plenty of old school horror nostalgia and gore! So that's about it... This album really is the full package!

BLOOD FREAK "Sleaze Merchants" Cd

(Razorback Records)
Release date:
2003
Running time: 37:05

Review:
Never heard of gringore pioneers Blood Freaks before? Well me neither... This album is outrageously advertised as being recorded in INSERT HUGE SCEPTIC QUOTEMARKS "1990"... You can even hear bonus tracks from the, erm... "1988 demo"! With a great attention paid to details, these demo tracks are in a totally different style from the rest of the album, they actually sound alot like Rigor Mortis (pre-Immolation) demo recordings! Ha ha! Ok, this really is excellent grind-gore, it's got the bad-ass old school Repulsion vibe alright but it also sounds very much like a mix of modern thrashing grind/gore like Gruesome Stuff Relish and Ghoul... The sound production is strong and heavy but maintaining a raw edge, songs are all little gems, with very basic and straightforward structures but still swarming with maddening grind riffs, alot of thrashing parts, some twisted, screaming guitar soli, and even a bit of groove in the early Blood Duster vein. Vocals are part growls, part shrieks, part gut-wrenching pitch-shifted grunts... Musicanship is suspiciously expert for such an old band... Ok, I'll drop more references like General Surgery, Necrony, Impaled... The album is also packed with gore imagery of course... Cheesy & creepy old horror movie trailers and samples served as interludes between songs, in good old Impetigo fashion. And an absolutely amazing cover artwork by Chas Balun, which is a composition made of stills from Dawn of the Dead, Zombi 2, Cannibal Holocaust, Blood Feast & Maniac... This is assuredly quality grind/gore/thrash, with a perfect cheesy horror wrapping... a quintessential Razorback band and a must-have record for anyone even remotely interested in grind & horror!

Tracks: 1)Warning 2)Feast of the Undead 3)Blood, blood, and more blood! 4)Grinding up the Dead 5)Bloodthristy Butchers from Beyond 6)Flesheaters from Outerspace 7)The Gruesome Gorehounds 8)Infested with Worms 9)The Cult of the Cannibal Freaks 10)I Rip Your Flesh 11)Gobble up your Guts 12)The Slaughterhouse 13)You are what we eat! 14)Werewolf a-Gore-Gore 15)Kill! Kill! Kill! 16)A brutal orgy of ghastly terror! 17)Awakening the beast 18)Insane for gore 20)I said... murder 21)Dr. cannibal 22)A Happy Ending
