Review: The band's bio states Abhorrent started back in 1990 and had 2 demos in 91 & 93. But this is the first time I hear about this band... I must say I'm impressed and this album is just excellent. Abhorrent isn't a common band, I'm not sure how to define their stuff... I think they play dirty metal for sure, but they take it with a lot of humour and inject big doses of many diverse styles in their compositions... you can find grindcore, hardcore, doom, heavy, thrash... sometimes it really sounds like insane parodies, on "Majestic sword" for example, it sounds like a damn funny mix of Black Sabbath, old Slayer, Iron Maiden & Helloween... It doesn't sound stupid, although this particular song is hilarious. But they know how to use their instruments. Guitars are quite low tuned, fucking raw and heavy all the time. Tempos are mostly moderate and very diversified, going together with many rock n' roll and blues guitar parts... but they always return to a hardcore or even grindcore basis, with fast rythms, thrashing riffs, and a few blasts too. They use many type of vocals, but the most numbrous are those low dirty growls and more high pitched funny hardcore ones... they also use many many other humouristic vocals fitting to music styles they parody. No other band comes to my mind when I listen, it's so different than whatever I heard... I would say they're a little like Filthy Christians in a way (they play a F.C. cover version on this cd, so it's probably why I remind them...), Macabre, Blood Duster(most likely on "Str8 outta northcote") or Repulsion(on the grind parts)... It's alot of fun, but Abhorrent is really musical. They do not base their compositions on fast rythms, although they use tight brutal catchy drummings at many judicious moments! This album is swarming with surprises and energy, it's 100 % musical and all the songs are different from each others... The last bonus song is also kinda funny, it sounds like a Red Hot Chilli Pepper song with belchings all over it, and believe me, it's truly disgusting. The colour cover artwork is really cool and original... But only two or three songs have their lyrics printed on it... It's a pity, coz they seem to be damn funny! I'd just say, if you like Filthy Christians and the other bands I talked about in this review, you should also dig this album!
