[December 2011] SPAIN & PORTUGAL GRIND/GORE

HAEMORRHAGE/GRUESOME STUFF RELISH Split MCD

(Black Hole Productions - BHP 020)
Release date: 2011
Running time: 14:34

Haemorrhage Review:
Meeting of the spanish grind gods! These are two of my personal favorite bands. Nobody gets it done with more gore, grind and sadistic gusto than Haemorrhage & Gruesome Stuff Relish! Both bands are pioneers of the genre in Spain (members of Gruesome Stuff Relish also acted as Repugnance since the early 90's) and stayed unwavering and true to the sickest music genre around throughout the years. I can't think of any other bands more suited to share a split together! I always thought both bands sounded very much alike, which is understandable sharing many common influences, namely early Carcass, Carnage & General Surgery as the most obvious ones. Of course they both developped their own personal idiosyncrasies... For example Impetigo is still an influence on both bands but in different ways, Haemorrhage in terms of Stevo-style hand-drawn cover artwork & Gruesome Stuff Relish in terms of cinephilic nostalgia and horror movie inspiration.
Anyway this is one split release I was eagerly waiting for! But since this was originally designed to come out as a vinyl Split 7" Ep (still scheduled to come out next year through Power It Up) the running time of 14 minutes feels quite short! I can't help but fantasize about how cool a full length Split LP would have been! Which also leads me to point out the main drawback of this release for me in that the main Haemorrhage song, "Hospital Thieves" has already been featured on "Hospital Carnage"! However the present version of this song seems like a slightly different and more complete edit, with an additional 5 seconds of introductory guitar riffing upfront... Thankfully the remaining 3 tracks are totally brand new. Song-writing is not quite as intricate as the stuff off their latest Split with Morgue. these are just 2 brutal no-frills grinding Haemorrhage originals and a cover version of the GBH song, "Necrophilia" (Punk Rock covers is almost like a tradition for Haemorrhage). Anyway, the sound production on these tracks is exactly the same the one on the latest album, so you could almost view them as "Hospital Carnage" bonus tracks! And the lyrics are pretty awesome stuff as always, you have to marvel at how Luisma keeps renewing the same old gore concept with fresh ideas! Black Hole Productions also did an awesome job with the layout and packaging as always.
Tracks: Haemorrhage: 1)Hospital Thieves (2:25) 2)Gangrenous Prosthetic Implants (2:02) 3)SelfMedication (1:14) 4)Necrophilia (GBH Cover) (1:31)

Gruesome Stuff Relish Review: While the Haemorrhage tracks felt like an epilogue to their last album, these 3 new Gruesome Stuff Relish songs are more like an appetizer to keep you sated until the new album comes out! In case you need a description, the band's playing weighty goregrind with the imposing monolithic presence of Bolt Thrower, the captivating Carcass-infused Swedish DM style heavy and melodic guitar tone and riffing impetus of General Surgery... These tracks are rife with awesome riffs and raspy ghoulish shrieks which seem to come straight out of classic songs like "Severe Catatonia in Pathology" or "The Day Man Lost". I'm glad they're now sharing this split with Haemorrhage because I always felt the creepy melodic leads and groovy riffing in Gruesome Stuff Relish also reeked of the putrefying influence of Luisma's great guitar work. Some of these riffs would feel right at home in Haemorrhage songs. Obviously Gruesome Stuff Relish has their own sound, much heavier and downtuned... Shambling slowly but surely like a rotten zombie, after its victim, ending in musical evisceration and bloody grinding dismemberment every fucking time! The zombie analogy is especially appropriate here with song titles such as "They Follow Your Scent", "Hell is Too Full" & "Become a Zombie"! The tongue in cheek lyrics really translate in just a few basic words the essence of what is exciting about old school horror movies... Gruesome Stuff Relish almost makes being a gore geek seem cool! And remember as much as these tracks sound great, they're really just a foretaste for the full length to come; according to the few advance tracks I've heard this is gonna be pretty mindblowing stuff! Bring on the worldwide zombie invasion!
Gruesome Stuff Relish Tracks: 5)They Follow Your Scent (3:23) 6)Hell is Too Full (1:39) 7)Become a Zombie (2:20)

RAW DECIMATING BRUTALITY "Obra o Diablo" Cd

(Vomit Your Shirt/Grindhead Records/Sevared Records/Hecatombe Records)
Release date: 2011
Running time: 20:32

Review: I don't know much about portugese grindcore, except for some goregrind bands like Holocausto Canibal, PussyVibes or Grog but Raw Decimating Brutality delves into more straightforward and ferocious grind/death boasting a fairly decent and pretty well balanced sound production.
First off, I'm not sure if this intentional but the cover artwork strangely reminds me of Kreator's demon guy from "Terrible Certainty"! And the guitar work seems to display a raw old school thrash/death metal influence at times... but the intended formula is primarly grindcore... To be exact, this stuff reminds me of american grind/death stuff like Insect Warfare or Assück with a similar frantic riffing style and tight mix of midpaced thrashing & fast blasting drumming... The basslines are nicely prominent in the mix too!
In the voice department the extreme growling vocal style is taking the lead with a guttural blend of Barney Greenway & Taki (from Blood). I've got to say I'm really not a fan of this style of vocals which belongs more to the brutal death metal genre! I can barely even listen to post-1989 Napalm Death anymore so these vocals don't really do it for me... But there's also a lot of sick mid-range shrieking backing vocals as well which actually suit me better than the growls on this. The band seems to have fun with their stuff with a bunch of wacky hardcore gang shouting and stuff too... I'd say the bestial growling and humorous vocals are the weak link for me here, but I guess this is all a matter of taste!
Overall this is really solid stuff, plenty of speed, some pretty murderous riffing, nice and dense fast compositions and some really tight, blasting drumming... And the material is kept concise, expeditious and just goes straight to the point. 12 tracks in 20 minutes and the last track is a live recording for some reason.
Lyrics are written completely in portugese, which is a more valid choice than broken english, even though I have no idea what this stuff is all about! Not a masterpiece but a a good effort worth checking out!
